Many times. You can remove the brake pads before and push out the pistons a bit more than normal. After shortening the hose, you have a bit of fluid at the lower part of the system that can help to push any air that might have gone in up into the reservoir. Poor man‘s bleed.
At 3.22 you mention about greasing the nut and caliper thread. If u just put grease on the nut then the thread will push out the excess grease leaving none being pushed inside. I'm was a plumber and we used this trick on all thread pastes or flux
I have! I just switch out my mountain bike Sram Code brakes for Shimano XT brakes and needed to shorten the hoses. I have the Park Tool cable routing kit which made running the new housing internally easy. During the pandemic I worked in a warehouse building bikes, I got tried of using other people dull housing cutting tools so I invested in a Jagwire Pro Hydraulic and Needle driver which works really well.
Top tip, when cutting the hose have the hose pointing vertically to the sky then there is less chance of fluid left in the remaining hose dripping out, like it could if cutting horizontally.
Just what I needed. Straight to the point, well explained. Tools are on the way, and then I can make the ridiculously long brake hose look normal. Subscribed.
Beautifully created this video. Well done. Very explicit. And I must note that you have a very good and interesting British accent, which is nice to hear, for me. Well done, I liked what you have shown here. I congratulate you, and continued success in everything you do!
I'm going to change my sram brake hoses. Can I displace the air in the hoses thru the lever from the caliper side or do I need to fill the hose from the caliper side before connecting to the lever? Yes, I'll bleed the system once it's full.
Wouldn’t the reverse threading do exactly what you say it does not Alex? The reverse threaded olive is turned while being tightened onto the barb in exactly the sense that would loosen the barb… Maybe it is to prevent attaching the olive from over stressing the threads that the self threading barb digs into the hose? I suppose those are pretty delicate so over tightening is worse than slightly turning them out while attaching the olive? In any event, thread things the correct way!
@@SlimPickins_07 I think Neil is correct. Never done a sram hose myself so not certain but surely it's not to aid installation but it is to prevent the barb coming unscrewed if the olive needs to come off?
@@nathanielhawkins6756 you are turning the nut to the right, the friction from that would tighten the barb, not loosen it. If the barb was regular right hand thread, it could loosen it.
@@SlimPickins_07 that's what I mean. If you want a new olive but to leave the barb in place loosening the reverse thread olive by turning clockwise would only tighten the barb. Either way I can't see how if both threads are standard that one will unscrew the other.
@@nathanielhawkins6756 it would be the nut that would unscrew the olive when installing the line. The barb is in the line tight enough that you don't have to worry about it coming out.
try doing this with all these hoses that have 10mm of hose visable between the hole in the handlebar and the shifter XD integrated hoses are an absolutely shite idea XD

It is 100% sure that air will go into the system when you cut the hose so my experience is that your system needs rebleeding. Always wondered why SRAM delivers their calipers and shifters allready bleed when 95% of all new frames is made for internal routing.
Just make the cable i bigger gauge and then line the innards with a plastic thread throughout said cable from factory this would solve the risk of damaged threads take it to the ba bank
Can you mix and match SRAM and Shimano? Just ordered cheap hydraulic brakes as got cable brakes that aren't good so went 4 piston and not Shimano or SRAM and so wondering if can use either when shorten? I already have SRAM olive fitting stuff
@@yonglingng5640 I can't remember what on about but think might of been SRAM olive on Shimano brakes but as SRAM olive are nicer to keep perfect than try to hold hose right as do with Shimano olive

#ASKGCNTECH how do I determine if my frame can fit a Shimano 105 groupset? I want to upgrade a 7-speed Shimano tourney to the 11 speed 105 (I will also change the wheels) but I want to know how to determine if my frame can accomodate the upgrade!
The official shimano tool is useless as well. Shimano’s barbs are just absurdly overtight for what low system pressures there are. It’d seem the blocks with a mallet is still the only way to go.
Hello! Is the older Ultegra R8050 Di2 Rear Derailleur compatible with the very latest 12 speed Ultegra cassette and chain? I suspect not, but it would be great to switch to 12 speed without changing the whole group set. #askgcn #askgcntech
Have you ever shortened your brake hoses yourself? How did it go?
Not yet

I Don’t have the tools needed. So the hose is wrapped around the downtube 🙋🏼♂️🤷🏼
Will there be any problem if I put different mineral oil mixed on my brakes?!, I've been curious about it.
I remember doing SRAM before they had threaded olive

Excellent video. Also useful would be a video on how to make the brake line longer for when you cut it too short.
I also like sarcasm
Easy done … watch the video in reverse … sorted. 😅
Actually TEKTRO has a kit to connect 2 brake lines. Usually needed for extreme lenghts for tandems!

Suggestions for correct grease? Shimano

is there a plug i can use so I don't get DOT fluid in my frame?
ok I've cut the hose, now how do I make it longer again?
😆
Now a video on how to bleed the brakes. Thx
They've done that. Would have been nice if they added a link to that video.
What if you need to extend the hose?!? Is there a coupler???
I have new handlebars and need 150 mm more hose......
Sorry, a new hose is the only way to go.
There are companies like zenocycleparts who offer a coupler which takes away much of the hassles shown here

It is easy - just cut in two places and tape hose with gaffer tape!
