This is a great, concise but still, detailed tutorial! It took me 6 minutes to watch it, then 5 minutes to prepare the tools and 10 minutes to fix both brakes. Thank you!
That was an excellent video. You got right to it, you didn't spend fifteen minutes talking about what you were about to do. You didn't get dressed in level 4 MOP gear and perform the work in a radiation hot-box like a lot of the other vids. It's mineral oil... Probably falls on the danger scale somewhere between baby oil and WD-40.
When inserting the barb it's important to "stretch" out the hose a bit with a pick. I've had a couple of cases where the barb would shave away some hose material and jam up the hole. Once the brake lever returned slowly into position after braking, the other time I wasn't even able to push oil through the system. Rounding off the end of the barb with some sandpaper prevented the damage to the hose.
Transitioning from mech brakes to hydraulic I needed I bit of guidance and this video (unlike others) has been very helpful! I shortened the hoses and swapped rear/front as well, because the brakes came wrong from the shop. Also had to make the 'Shimano yellow tool' out of two pieces of wood because it did not come with my BR-MT500 brakes. I suggest to slide in the olive before tapping the insert and best using a small hammer wrapped with tape so not to damage the surface.
My tip is this... I did it twice and the first time I followed the instructions to the letter, the second time I had a brainwave and instead of mashing up the hose with snips and squishing it round again with pliers I simply put the hose against a hard surface and used a Stanley knife with a fresh blade to cut it in a gentle sawing motion... super clean cut and the hose stayed perfectly round ☺
That's a good idea. There are proper brake hose cutting tools where the cutter looks more like a stanley knife blade and which similarly don't squash the hose. You're not *really* supposed to use snips or cable cutters like Neil does in this video but mostly it turns out ok regardless.
Wow, this looks extremely easy. I almost took my bike to the local bike shop to have them do it and pay them $35.00. Now it will only cost me $15.00 for the brake fluid and bleed cup on amazon. Thanks, I'm gonna shorten my newly installed brakes cables tomorrow.
Never use a metal tool to tap in the barbed fitting/hose insert this can mark the surface of the fitting and cause issues getting a proper seal, always use a plastic tool like the handle of a screwdriver or a small plastic mallet.
Think I would of put the olive on before the barb but that might not be required for Shimano. Also worth mentioning you don't want to over tighten the shroud as if you strip that thread you have screwed the lever. Good clear vid for beginners as there is nothing more annoying that flappy hoses 👌🏼🤓
JESUS CHRIST THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!I just got my shimano mt200 brakes and the cable was way longer than the original on my 26" bike.Thank you so much for this video!!!
concise and very precise. I have bled my brake repeatedly but air keeps coming back into the system. Time for a new hose. Damaged by Swiss Air along with loads of other bits that were deliberately scraped along a road and also dented. Avoid them.
Loved it. For some reason the hose on my girlfriends bike was a lot longer than mine and kept being pulled around by the fork. Definitely want to shorten that up. Only downside there's a few purchases to be made. Good to have these things on hand though.
A side cutter as being used here will squash the cable ending the way it actually ends up being seen at 2:20. Shimano therefore recommends to use a utility knife; I used a scalpel which is very sharp and will give the best clean and straight 90º edge without squashing the cable. Next add a small amount of grease around the threads of the connecting bolt before screwing it back, ... makes life a bit easier!
best way i found to cut a shimano hydraulic hose(much better than what is shown in the video)...get box knife that has the short double tip replaceble blades and is foldable.....take the brake hose, mark the spot for the cut, hold it flat on the handle part where the blade goes and push it closed....perfect cuts with minimal effort....also works with a regular razor blade and a piece of wood and still makes nicer cuts than any pliers
Great video. This is something I may have to do wrenching at PAT'S BIKE SHOP in BREWER, MAINE (shout out to the shop I work at). Seriously though, really practical and helpful to hear the steps explained and be able to see the job done at the same time.
You should also adjust the reach all the way out before bleeding! Also, if you have some sort of free stroke adjustment (like on the XTs), you may need to adjust that prior to bleeding as well.
You left out a few extremely important steps. #1, take your pads and rotors (or wheels) off and place them in the next town over. #2 safety glasses and gloves, especially if you're using DOT fluid, that stuff can blind you. #3 use a razor cutter from acid, jagwire or even a box cutter as others have mentioned, this will leave a much cleaner cut. Especially since we are talking about a system under pressure that's designed to be air and fluid tight. #5 clean the piss out of EVERYTHING, DOT fluid is mega corrosive and will eat the paint right off of anything it touches, if you get mineral oil or dot fluid anywhere near your rotors or pads they're done. #6 drink a beer and think about the amazing job you've just done!
bawwest way i found to cut a shimano hydraulic hose(much better than what is shown in the video)...get box knife that has the short double tip replaceble blades and is foldable.....take the brake hose, mark the spot for the cut, hold it flat on the handle part where the blade goes and push it closed....perfect cuts with minimal effort....also works with a regular razor blade and a piece of wood and still makes nicer cuts than any pliers
Can you show how to do a Hayes brake with the combined barb/olive peice and the proper way to do it and recommended tool/method to insert it properly !!
Darnit i did this recently and now my new Deore rear brake needs a bleed as air got in somehow But the front is fine. The official bleed process looks simple for these brakes though so gonna have a go unlike Avids that they replaced!
+vaxbuster Didn't even need to bleed the brake just did what Neil did but hung the bike up from the front wheel first for a few days so that any air had got to the top popped in the bleed header thing poured in some fluid and repeatedly pulled the brake and tapped the caliper and hose and rotated the lever around a bit on top and hey presto solid brake again! Shimano why are you so good!
+Global Mountain Bike Network Was also made worse when I got home and tried to wash it off and found the garden hose had frozen. (No pressure washer at home) I knocked chunks of ice / mud off the bottom bracket and tried to use a hard nylon brush to get the worst of it off moving parts. (I was amazed the jockey wheels and cables were moving the amount of ice around them) Was tempted to get a bucket of warm water and try that but I think I got enough off with the brush. Then normal chain cleaning and I left the body of the bike muddy :)
Nice video, I wouldn't normally hit anything steel with steel, probably use a nylon hammer, also the original insert had an O ring fitted, the replacement did not, is this OK?
Great video thanks for the straight to the point instruction! Looks like now I have to buy a couple of parts so I can trim up these super long brake lines.
I have my brake levers setup so the right is flat and the left is pointed down more because I use the front for casual riding when ime sitting down and the left for going downhill and standing up
Great video again! Will be doing this soon as my cockpit is a mess- would it be possible to do a video on 'how to take apart a raceface crank on a carbon bike, mines a cube stereo hpc, and i'm struggling to get the last nut/bolt out the crank, as would like to service my bearings. I have my first hydrolic disks on my bike im unsure how rough they are like is my rack gonna damage the hoses or do i need to be carefull. Tighing my cables together
Hi i see you have your rear break on the left i just got a new bike in the mail but rear is on the right side. I have xt and want to swap them over. Can i just swap them ore do i need to order new olives and bleed the whole system from the calipers up
Im guessing when you mention the nipples and blocks that come with the brakes, you are meaning when you buy the brakes separately from the bike? I ask because when i purchased my trek fuel ex 8 it didnt come with anything like that for the brakes.
+Tyler Ross That may well be the case - If you go to your local bike shop they may be able to help you out for a few ££ or If you call your dealer they may be able to help you. Very useful things to have in you tool box.
If I don't need to trim the brakes but just need to route the lines through the frame, all I have to do is just pull that line out, then put it back in without the need to rebleed right?
Yes, but you may have to clip the locking bolt and the olive off of the end in order to route the cable through the frame. You'd then need to re-install them once it's through :)
What if you don't have the insert and the plunger(Olive) say, you are installing a used brake, how do you get the insert and the plunger(Olive) since you can't reuse the old ones. I will wait. You see, everything isn't always ideal as you demonstrate in video GMBN, some people like me just can't always afford new brakes that come with everything.

So I followed these steps and when i pulled the lever the brake line blew out. Did I not get the olive squished? I was worried about tightening too tight. How do I know if I need to squash the olive more?
I figured out my issue. My cut on the hose was not square. The first time I cut the hose I used a utility knife. I tried again with wire cutters like you did and that made the cut square. Went on perfect

Sweet vid..... Takes the fear out of messing with hydraulics.
Super tutorial. Clear and concise, and it's nice to see high quality camera work. Thanks!
Great tips! Especially the yellow plastic "tools" in the box. Just shortened my hoses. Worked perfectly. Job was done in 15 min. Thanks Neil.

Still a lot of help for a 5 years old video. Thank. 🇵🇭
Love the video very helpful and so glad you showed how to do it without buying a 80 dollar tool like the Shimano TL-BH62
Just shortened my brake hose following these instructions. Went off without a hitch. Thanks GMBN!
Never use a metal tool to tap in the barbed fitting/hose insert this can mark the surface of the fitting and cause issues getting a proper seal, always use a plastic tool like the handle of a screwdriver or a small plastic mallet.
DimensionsOfEarth Not necessarily plasti, but just something softer. Brass should work for example..
Neil as the tech guy! Still relevant today. Thanks as always GMBN!
This video was very helpful to me today. New brakes installed and ready to ride. Thanks GMBN.
Just got new disc brakes for my bike. And although there are many instructional videos on youtube I always go straight to GMBN! :-)
Thank you Neil! You just talked me through a successful job of hose shortening!

unreal. detailed but not dragged out. perfect.
Thanx Neil, made me feel a bit more comfortable doing it myself...and that's it all done and good to go. You are awesome!!
JESUS CHRIST THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!I just got my shimano mt200 brakes and the cable was way longer than the original on my 26" bike.Thank you so much for this video!!!
Great video. I hadn't trimmed a hose in a few years and was worried I forgot something. Straight forward & good information. Cheers!
You can also use a really sharp utility knife to cut the hose. Lay hose down on a piece of wood to cut and be careful to cut it as square as possible.
Excellent video, just got a pair of new hydraulic brakes, this vid was just what I needed to swap them out with the ole mechanicals!
Spot on video. I had to do this exact process, with a new Shimano XT rear brake system. I really appreciate this video.
DougZ73 did you have to bleed the whole brake system or just whay this video showed?
concise and very precise. I have bled my brake repeatedly but air keeps coming back into the system. Time for a new hose. Damaged by Swiss Air along with loads of other bits that were deliberately scraped along a road and also dented. Avoid them.

Yea pls
Can I use the mineral oil that comes out of the hose near the olive as olive oil for cooking ?
Yes. As a laxative.

Heh, "Animal, vegetable, mineral". One of those three is what us humans should eat. 😉
Shimano recomends to apply some (premium) grease on the olive before tightening/crushing it down
Around the olive? Or in between those hose and the olive, so inside the olive

Thank you sir, great vid and I just did mine. Dunno why I was nervous about it, super easy.
If your brakes use DOT fluid, wear some gloves when you do this. You can get away without gloves on Shimano as they use mineral oil.
+William Keys Good call. I actually get a headache if I get DOT brake fluid on my skin. Weird.
Hah, shimano brakes all the way. Though i admit sram guides sure work well
ive never shortened a housing because i always think i can move that brake to the new bike. considering stock brakes are usually inferior brake
