Maybe no one here is as young as me... 17 anybody?! But I LOVE the old songs. This one fills me with all of the strongest emotions, love, joy, and peace, images of front porches, grandmas snapping peas, grandpas on geetars and harmonicas, young men in cowboy hats dancing on the dirt roads, young lasses in pretty dresses (much like I love to wear) with long swirling hair, things I never knew so well. My parents are raising me right, and in the name of God my Savior, I will be one of the very few of the children in this age who cling to the morals and standards of the righteous fathers before us.

I remember walking into a saloon on a dusty street in Gila City in the fall of 1861, a year before the great flood destroyed the town. The barkeep was playing this tune on a piano. It was the first time that I heard this soothing song. I was immediately drawn into the notes that seemed to touch my soul. I can't explain it completely. It's a feeling that words simply can't describe. I had planned to hit the trail the following day to La Paz to mine for gold, but for some reason, I decided to stay a few more days. Maybe it was this song or something else that made me change my plans. The second day in Gila is when I met my wife. She was the owner of a local dressmaking company. I saw her through the storefront window and we locked eyes with one another. We both fell in love instantly. Had I left town as I previously intended, we never would have met.

While I was awaitin for my horse to be sorted I headed over to the saloon to get me some cornbread and beans, flapjacks and beef Jerkey.was then I heard someone singing the song until a bunch of drunken cowboys burst in the doors whooping and a hollering, well I drew my colt 44 and loosed off lead and everything was quiet. I kinda left town soon after, never met me no wife though........sure love that song yep reckon so 🤪🤪🤪🤪

I Watched the movie from 1973, Dillinger, starring Warren Oates. There's a scene when he's sitting in his prisons cell. He's carving a wooden gun and whistling to this tune. Then I read this comment in which I'm sorry to hear about your papa may he rest in peace. Your papa had a nostalgic moment listening to this tune. Very few people now days specially the new generation don't know anything about this. To me this song and tune represents a lost history of what America was about. A whole different time when people travel through land in horse wagons, and sit and camp in areas to rest and eat.

    Lyrics:
From this valley they say you are goin'
I will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile
For they say you are takin' the sunshine
That has brightened our pathway the while
Do you think of the valley you're leavin'
Oh how lonely and dreary it will be
Do you think of the fond heart you're breakin'
And the sadness you've cast over me
For a long time my dear, I've been waiting
For the words that you never would say
And alas my poor heart you are breakin'
For they tell me you're goin' away
As you go to your home by the ocean
May you never forget those sweet hours
That we spent in the Red River Valley
And the love we exchanged mid the flowers
Come and sit by my side if you love me
Do not hasten to bid me adieu
But remember the Red River Valley
And the one that has loved you so true

    Full lyrics:
From this valley they say you are going,
We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile,
For they say you are taking the sunshine
Which has brightened our pathways a while.
    Chorus:
    Come and sit by my side if you love me;
Do not hasten to bid me adieu,
But remember the Red River Valley,
And the girl that has loved you so true.
I've been thinking a long time, my darling,
Of the sweet words you never would say,
Now, alas, must my fond hopes all vanish?
For they say you are going away.
Won't you think of the valley you're leaving,
Oh, how lonely and sad it will be,
Just think of the fond heart you're breaking,
And the grief you are causing to me.
From this valley they say you are going,
When you go, may your darling go too?
Would you leave her behind unprotected,
When she loves no one other than you.
As you go to your home by the ocean,
May you never forget those sweet hours,
That we spent in the Red River Valley,
And the love we exchanged 'mid the flowers.
I have promised you, darling, that never
Will a word from my lips cause you pain,
And my life, it will be yours forever,
If you only will love me again.
They will bury me where you have wandered,
Near the hills where the daffodils grow,
When you're gone from the Red River valley,
For I can't live without you I know.

Music like this completely clears my mind and I forget everything that’s going on in life. Wish I could’ve lived in those times. Wasn’t full of media and mostly everyone was respectful back then. People minded their business and didn’t get offended over someone else’s opinion.

Liked the comments. A classic song and makes a great play along in the key of A. I’ll be 85 in May and hunkered down in Colorado with the crisis. We had a Cabin in a Beautiful Valley at 9,000’ and this takes me back with a lot of heart. Been playing and learning the harp for the last few years. Yes it can be harder than expected but much fun at this final lap.

This and Larado were the first tunes I ever played on the harmonica I was given at Christmas, I was just messing around without a clue and stumbled accidentally on the right notes. The same happened with my grandmother years before in Dublin 🇮🇪

The people back then on the western front knew what life was worth and knew what a great gift it was. They lived in a way that was truly free. I just wish that people now days would view life with the same value.

Beautiful music and great pictures, reminding me of my childhood - at the Saturday matinee we almost always saw a cowboy film. Also back in the days TV showed a number of westerns and so it could be said I was reared on such entertainment. Watching and listening to this makes me long for the good old times to return!
PS It looks as though my dog has feelings for the music as he has come over to me and speaking with big sad eyes!

Trish Bailey I have been reared in westerns an military movies, been round western culture for my whole life, I haven’t rode a horse in years, but I long to again, I have a saddle and tack for it, I don’t have a bridle though, but I also have a rope and a couple other things, I long to ride a horse again... long to break my first bronco, I know it’ll be hard, but I love cowboy culture, and I love the old west, I know it wouldn’t be as romantic as Hollywood would make it, but it’s be a hell of a lot more freedom than we got today, plus, it is better than the way we live today

It's such a strange experience when one listen's to such type of music and its history. "I'm from a small town in England, famous for Robin Hood, and we English love the (Americans) with all our hearts. A DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERE, just like the Americans find our British culture. Beautiful, wonderful and so nice !
