I bought the SHIELD PLUS a week after it came out. Have atleast 5,000 rounds thru it. Yeah I shot it A LOT!!! AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. Not a single MALFUCTION. Honestly. With the 15 round mags. It's a PERFECT fit for my hands

@Dogleg the slide release gets better over time. I like my wife's Sig 365 Macro with a custom XL grip. I thought about switching. Can't go wrong either way, I think. Being able to swap out the grip on the Sig is pretty nice though.

IMO that's a very fair comparison and review. I have roughly 225 rounds through my Canik MC9 and it has been 100% reliable. It has outstanding accuracy belying it's size; it shoots like a much larger pistol. The one thing I think you missed was the pinky finger extension for the Canik 12 round magazine that gives a full three finger grip. The pinky extension is an accessory included in the Canik package.

The M&P line has a long track record of ultra reliability, can shoot pretty much any ammo brand without issues and will still function nearly flawlessly if you drop it in mud or freezing weather. Spare mags are also readily available at any gun store. If you're worried about 2 extra rounds, just carry a backup Equalizer mag and you'll have 15 extra

@@Davyw95 it was chewing up rounds as it was feeding the next round after firing which of course was not going back into battery. Even when it was not taking chunks out of the bullet tip, it had many failures to go into battery. Also, the mag release was terrible. You had to physically pull it out, but not all the time. I tried everything one would normally do when a gun needs to be "broken in". I also put 500 rounds through it. I was planning on carrying this gun and there was no way with all those issues. We're talking at least one failure per mag, sometime 3 or 4. Sucks, I hope they fix it.

There IS a couple of things going against it tho. One of them, is huge. At least around here, we canNOT get them! Nobody has them on the shelves, our local FFLs say their distributors are backordered, and IF we can find them online, the dealers want maximum MSRP due to availability.
Obviously, as the new kid on the block aftermarket support has to play catch up. That's only a temporary con tho. It will clearly be a very popular pistol, and once it gets more into circulation, more and more people will be offering holsters, and such for them.
That said there's also some pros that I can add to your list. 1) Magazines. It can use the mags from it's older, bigger brothers. This includes what are considered standard magazine, and the extended mags. Don't think that there are mag grip sleeves for them yet tho. 2) Canik throws a LOT into the box. If they were charging for all the case candy that they include, this would definitely increase the pricepoint by $100-150.
There is also an option (Again... if you can FIND it!) to purchase the MC9 with a Mecanik01 RDS *included* as a package deal for around an additional $100. That in itself is tremendous bang for the buck, and from what I have read and watched, the Mecanik01 is being very well received.

The thickness is a point that can matter depending on where you carry and your clothes you wear. There is a fairly big visible difference between the two and that makes the S&W more concealable for some people.
It's not a big deal for me. But I think if I were to carry that thick of a gun, I would choose a compact over a subcompact for the all around performance.

Great review. I bought the Shield Plus first and the MC9 is on hold waiting for Maryland handgun roster update (April 2023)
My only issue with the shield plus with an optic cut is where the cut is in the slide. The shield has a ton of real estate taken up on the back of the slide for the sights. These guns are small so it’s natural to want to rack across the top. The shield plus has no slide between the optic and the ejector port. Que the occasionally pinched finger. It’s my only annoyance. Canik and Even my buddies GX4 has a finger width of material forward of the optic cut. The Shied will likely go back to no optic smallest carry in my rotation for this reason.
So far 500+ rounds on the shield plus, its been flawless on cheap Winchester white box.
Just know this going in since it’s not obvious in this review.

I'm totally a "Buy American" person
when I possibly can. My money is going to the new FN "Reflex" that just was announced a few days ago. Initial reviews look very good. While it looks like Canik finally has a very good conceal carry pistol, their previous small compact was a chunky top heavy gun, with a slide that seemed needlessly wide and heavy. Sure, the MC9 will be cheaper, and I'm not rich, but I've been very satisfied with Smith and Wesson, and FN pistols. I'll pay a little more, to help keep jobs here. Please don't flame me. As badly as the current administration is deconstructing our economy in about every possible way, I'm more concerned about American jobs than I ever have been. I don't criticize anyone that buys a Canik or Glock, or other foreign made pistol. You do whatever is best for you. I have a G43 and a G48 myself. It's because they are perfect for me. Did I miss one of the very important numbers regarding the two pistols??? Width.
The Canik looks noticeably wider than the Shield Plus. That’s one of the important reasons I chose the Shield. It’s with me every day and when you’re a skinny old fart, it makes a difference in not printing…. I put a MagGuts kit in both the mags that gives me 12 rounds in the short one with a little pinky extension that allows three fingers without increasing printing, and 15 rounds in the long mag. Performance Center trigger and porting makes a huge difference as well. The Shield prints noticeably less.

Agreed, the canik is wider. You can tell by just looking at the mags. The canik mag appears to be a true double stack, like a glock mag, whereas the shield plus mag is more of a stack & 1/2. That's how canik squeezes in the 2 extra rounds. The shield slide also has lightening cuts down each side and is definitely thinner than the boxey canik slide. If you get a ported barrel which is available on the Shield Plus Performance Center model you will notice less recoil. I have the 4" ported barrel & it is a soft shooter compared to my non ported barrel of my P365XL. But I like that as well, but have had to send it back twice now to Sig with dead trigger issues. Only got a few hundred rounds through it before the trigger broke again.

The canik is the obvious choice. The only reason to get the shield would be if it fits in your hand and you can shoot it better. The canik also has a pop-up loaded chamber indicator like the springfield. Always liked that.

Major comparison, I own the shield plus performance center, I do not own this particular Canik. I have a few of the full size

People never like the new kid. Takes awhile before he becomes one of the guys.
