it was a non-story from the start, and the media made hay from it. which was quite disgusting imo. I think a good test of whether something is newsworthy is - if a couple of years later we found out that this actually happen, would we have gone 'wtf why u nv tell me'? doubt it. everyone stopped caring since he lost the last olympics.

Tbf he shouldn’t even need to serve NS. He’s won a gold medal. That’s literal hard work since he was 5-6 years old. NS is a huge barrier for swimmer because every day they miss training it literally takes 2 days to make up for the loss. With him missing missing 2023 worlds there’s no way he’s gonna do anything in Paris 2024. Hopefully he can go to the US and get a better life there. We don’t deserve him here.

Totally agree. Mindef is just too stubborn compared to south korean military. South Korea is still technically at war with North Korea. Hence if South Korea can grant military exemptions for top athletes winning medals in Olympics and other leagues why Singapore cannot do the same..
This is the reason why local Singaporeans will never make it in the sporting world like representing in the EPL, Formula 1 and etc.

I disagree. This sport serves the country and himself which no doubt is amazing. But it doesn't equip him to protect himself and work with other fellow men when war or disaster comes. When war comes, does the gold medal matter? Does he has basic skills to keep himself and others safe? I would gladly see him chose a vocation that he enjoys eg navy.
Have we taken the peace at sg for granted and be naive that there's world peace and that we are inevitable as a nation? Serving army help saves life. Maybe that gold medal helps to block a bullet when he wears it all the time I guess (watch too much drama and movie). 😅🤣 Are u Singaporean? How come no sense of urgency or danger as a small tiny nation where we very much have to depend on ourselves when shit comes - when we are brought up in a land with no natural resources and only has ourselves to start with.
When the army calls for the men to come forward and listen to those commands, is he able to step forward to listen to those ques, to work as a team, to save himself and save others? If it's meant to do good for him, it is to equip him to at least learn how to carry and operate a gun in army lah. Shit like Ukraine war happens in this era lor.... those asking to exempt him, u guys teleport and save him when trouble comes is it?

Just dropping a random nugget of wisdom: The actual term for what we all know as freestyle Is “front crawl”. Freestyle is actually a name of a swimming event where participants have the “freedom” to choose any stroke they like. They can even do a breaststroke or butterfly but front crawl is known to be the fastest.

I feel like the media in general not only in Singapore is a fucked up business. As fast as someone can rise to fame based on their achievements, the media can also tear them down the moment they fuck up (EVEN IF IT ISN'T A BIG FUCK UP TO BEGIN WITH). Honestly, they don't care as long as they get the views and attention from the public who thirsts for drama. It has always been like that, yet it felt like nothing has been done to improve the situation.

I disagree. I think the gold medal doesn't exempt him from NS. He trained and was rightfully awarded for it.
Instead, he should exempted from the typical NS and serve the time through mandatory swimming representation.

I think the case against sports enhancing drugs is that most of them are detrimental to one’s health in the long run (increased chance of all-cause mortality). So the rules are put in place because athletes shouldn’t have to make the choice of whether they want to risk/shorten their life in order to excel in their sport.

the reason singapore condemn cannabis use is simple.. the population is not ready to treat this drug with discipline. currently cannabis is use globally to treat sickness like seizure , parkinson , epilepsy and case that hits your neuro problems. but to make it open to the public use there will be people abusing it , just like cigarette and alcohol its a fine line between having a good time drinking , social smoking and being a alcoholic and serial smoker.
cannabis have never been the cause of serious illness , mental unsound or even aggression. unlike meth it calms your mind or some would say trip your brains , depending on the dosage you use would determine the level of high you're on.. you put 2 man in isolation for 100 days one to be fed with meth and the other with pure grade cannabis the one with the meth will OD in a week and die while the one with cannabis will simply walk out 100 days later smiling and happy that's the result if you were to experiment
the drug you guys mention the "limitless drug" its from a the movie 🤣🤣🤣 adderall is the one you mean. it s drug for pure focus just like cocaine but the side effects are being restless , out of focus and tired after

Play for a club does not bring pride to the nation. So i don't think it is fair for Ben Davis to defer or exclude from NS. But i do agreed that Joseph Schooling should be exclude or deferred NS. For his Cannabis action, he should face the consequences as it is a law that apply to everyone. Everyone go through hard time, so it is not an excuse to take drug overseas.

    1. JS did not break any law. Singapore's laws have no jurisdiction overseas. Most importantly, there is no convincing evidence to prove his guilt. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Trial by media is not justice.
    2. Singapore's law on drug is outdated.
    3. JS should sue everyone involved for defamation. CNA, ST, Mindef, CNB, etc.

    • @mattw6922

Actually that is incorrect. Certain laws have extraterritorial reach that applies to Singaporeans even if they are outside of Singapore. Singaporeans who tested positive for drugs but took the drugs overseas will be guilty of breaking the law. Another example is bribery and corruption. Any Singaporean engaged in bribery overseas is guilty.
JS didn’t break the law because he didn’t test positive for weed consumption or at least that’s what the news say i.e. he admitted to taking weed but didn’t test positive.

Everyone forgets Schooling defered NS for 7 years already, if his performances didnt drop so drastically in tokyo vs rio he confirm would have successfully defered again. He went from olympic gold to not even qualifying for semi finals. How to justify further deferment... and all these is before he even enlisted so NS havent done shit to him yet.
Can sympathize with his emotional/psychological situation, can give him credit for achievements... but thats why punishment for crimes got ranges. If he broke the law, punishment can be reduced to the minimum as per the law after considering his achievements and sympathizing with his psychological situation, but the law is the law and it must be enforced. If not its elitism.

    Weed will:
    1. Discourage international companies to setup here. Who wants a drugged up workforce?
    2. Split the country even further to "left" and "right" politics, making a divisive and unstable society.
    3. Make politicians pander to people to retain votes, thus causing further populist policies.
But at least people can get high, and virtue signal "we are a good society because we do not ban drugs."
Personally, I think cocaine should be legalized too.
Would be a pretty funny sight to see, young people getting the messed up society that they deserve.
