- Singapore's army will be changing their 5bx ritual with a safer program called PX. The naming of a character in Jack Neo's latest installment of his Ah Boys To Men series is called into question for discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
And we question more aspects of the army, if it's getting soft, if women should serve, and more.

I have similar story with that NDU guy, but I was in 2004 Commando intake. I remember there were 47 confirmed for hell week except 3 of us including me who couldn't get commando's gold, the problem lies with my 2.4 km run, my timings was always around 9:35-9:20 the passing mark below 9:15 I was so determine to get the red beret I requested to be confined in school of commando for 2 whole weeks rejecting all book outs and trained the fuck out of me. Finally the day came, I ran with all my soul could give until at the final lap, I remembered vividly my OC was there smiling at me and my PC showed me the timing .....
8:44. I finally made it..... Just don't give up.

The phrase “Purple Light” is a reference to the “Purple Heart”, a US military decoration (or medal) that is awarded to soldiers that have been wounded or killed in battle. It is one of the oldest military decorations that are still in use today.

About the part of females serving NS, I feel, they can start with the administrative/supportive position and medical position. These roles do not demand physical strength and also simulate working culture in the workforce in a sense (though quite different). Yes, we have biological differences, but it does not mean you can't do anything. With the ever declining birth rate, I won't be surprised that the children of current generation may have to serve NS regardless of their gender.
If Combat Medic then the physical aspect will still be the same as those in Combat roles. I have more than a few females in my NS unit who ace their IPPT, Combat Shoot and Crew-Served Tasks. And they're not limited to female Officers, I seen the same thing with female Specialists as well.
females can start with fulfiling ippt requirement... keep themselves fit so they can do things when required
women should take up all roles in NS.

If the purpose of making females serve NS is just to justify or make a statement regarding equality I rather females not serve the NS. Decision made on how the NS system should be change should prioritize on the the benefits of how each and every decision can benefit the NS system and SG defense as a whole not to solve some gender equality problem.

actually i think the shiong training makes sense to some extent ah, I think it prepares us for worst case and also builds mental toughness which I guess is necessary no matter what your role is in war time. (ie on the ground, in a tank or back at HQ)

If I recall correctly, Jon used to be in Sch 4 - 3rd Coy (same as me!). I remember him as the guy who said "Glutinous Stretch" when he was leading the whole company for a cool down 😂😂. Tbh I learn what a Gluteus is only when i was in bmt, and all I could think of when i hear that word is "Glutinous" loll

Army Daze X Ah Boys to Men is such a cool crossover I never really thought of...
the war now is very different from last time already. now unmanned vehicles, drones, missles etc... fitness is not really that relevant compared to last time. now should focus on skills, attention, focus endurance of technicians/operators etc. so its not about going soft, its about going relevant imo.
Not really true, fitness is still relevant in which ever warfare your doing, in the end of the day war is unpredictable and anything can happen.
Yes, it is going soft, but soft doesn't mean bad. WW2 was not fought the same way as WW1. War is radically different now than before. Technology and urbanization of our neighbors made a lot of Xiong things redundant. Look north how much jungle is left in the 72km range, route march now is just asking to be shot, Armored Personnel Carriers are the way to go now.
Also, recruits' physical fitness is totally different now, last time school kids no phones all play playground, sports, run around during school and after so when they go NS they are certain lvl of fitness on average now that average is way lower. If you train now people with the way you train people then they will break. Also, time is shorter now, so we need to train smarter and more efficiently to get everyone to an acceptable level. so now got physiotherapists, sports scientists to come in and determine the most efficient way to reach the goal.
Purple light is referring to the purple heart medal awarded to people who died in honor in the British military meaning you die.
Also seen better CGI in Army Ads than Jack Neo Army movies.
With Birthrate going down down, girl enlistment is an eventuality, there are already different training and testing standards for females. there are already PT singlets for females, the uniform is unisex.
Re: first para. Sounds good in theory. But when the stakes are high wouldn't it be better to be ready for Murphy's Law. I'm not saying things will go back to WW2 style of warfare. But technology is a tool mah. If and when it fails we can only rely on ourselves. If APC is down, I don't think we'll pack up and go home or wait for a replacement.
The jungle f-in sucks. But given we live in a tropical climate, it would make sense to be able to adapt to it. To prevent collateral damage or if civilians can't be evacuated.
If you think marching 72km is difficult, think again. Doing a leap and bound fire movement/sprint in the forest/fibua with full infantry equipment (not the simple BMT rifle) is more physically taxing than the route march. I am sure you will agree if you have experienced it. If a soldier is as soft as being unable to do 72, he ain't gonna have the stamina to fight close combat effectively. Btw, north is big with alot of plantation/mountains. No forest?

The song 'purple light' is sang wrongly actually. It's meant to be 'pop a light' - like the white phosphorous round to illuminate the valley in the dark before a firefight. Substitute it in and all the things makes sense. (: [So I was told]

5BX is warm up? Last I recall a normal saf warmup is much tougher than 5BX. When I first did it I was wondering why its even implemented instead of doing the normal warmup.
My favourite 5BX exercise is calf raise.

When discussing whether females should serve NS, I dont think it's logical to argue about childbirth which is more of a personal choice than national service. Giving birth is a totally separate issue from military service, and honestly how many can genuinely call it NS? but more importantly if we bring in childbirth which is a totally separate issue, men can also start pulling in all other sorts of separate issues like having to be the traditional breadwinner, etc. There is no end to the comparison when we conflate different issues. We should not be conflating childbirth with military service.
Israeli ladies also have mandatory national service even Gal Godot was not exempted.
Hmmm. Its the personal choice of a man and a woman making the decision together right? So it’s a joint decision. We know woman has to go through 9 months of pregnancy so what can the man do? It’s a genuine question btw.

@@diana.b1059 Not entirely true. Women get to decide and choose who they open their legs to and have kids with. A guy does not have the luxury of choice whether to serve ns or not. Defaulting NS is a national crime. As such, conflating child birth with NS is one entirely bs comparison.
It wouldn't be much of a stretch to start a new branch of National Service under MOH.
When I was in Australia for exercise, we watched Ah Boys to Men one of the nights. Pretty cool/ fun / nice experience. Movie night under the starry night sky. Romantic siol.
Wanna know what the Australian troops thought about us? "What is this? Boys' scout?"
They also laughed at the number of safety banners being put up along campsite.
That being said, mad fking respect to them despite them mocking us. The female soldier who was their cook carried not 1 but 2 freaking trays of catering food tray thing. Each of those weigh about 20kg with food in it. She loaded both of those by herself into the tonner. After a whole day of cooking, she then runs laps and does push ups sit ups till sunset daily for the 30 days I was there. Fking badass. And that's their fking support.

There are differences between conscripts and regulars. If want to compare with their Australian troops, a better/fair comparison would probably be our ADF.
Difference between professional army and conscription
I does agreed that batches before mine would remark that my training ain't as tough as theirs. Which I agreed, but looking ahead we should train more smarter, earlier days resources and knowledge were limited. Now the SAF employ sports science during physical training, that should be welcoming, improve efficiency, effectiveness and lesser injuries.

My impression of the older gen is that many have this misconception that harder training automatically equals more beneficial training.
Sure there’s some element of truth in that, but it doesn’t apply to everything. For instance, it’s true that forcing cadets to sleep less trains them mentally. But if gone too far, anyone who gyms regularly & has done some research on muscle building will know that this will eventually only breed frail, skinny soldiers, because sleep is essential to packing on muscle.
Balance is key. If the older gen thinks the army is becoming ‘softer’, I would wager that on average, the older gen would lose in a fitness challenge against the younger gen at both their peaks.
This is not bcos the older gen didnt train as hard as the younger gen. Rather, it’s simply bcos the army has progressed to train smarter instead of harder (proper nutrition, recovery, etc). If the army wants to train today’s soldiers to be more mentally tough, there are many ways to do that, and making all training as hard as possible isn’t the most effective to do that.

I guess many ppl missed the point that when war really breaks out, all your communications and satelites will go ka poot. So how are you going to fight war? Is back to basics again... Besides, you will be living in ruins and it requires lots of physical and mental strengths for survival. Don't expect all buildings standing tall swee swee like peace time. Weapons of this era are more destructive than before and we have more concretes now compared to WWI & WWII. So without physical strength, you can kiss your *** goodbye.

A lot of the actual trainings and moments in special units arent shown nor documented on SAF's RUclips or documentary. Most of them are toned or softened down for parents to watch or pre-enlistees who are worried.
Yes, units like C4I and many more don’t show their training at all or what they do. Thing like GCC and GVT barely shown to public. BMT training no longer as tough as it used to be. But unit training which is more secretive, total different story.

An encik from my camp once told me that NS is not just train our body but to also improve our mental resilience for when we grow older and enter the working industry. If we can go through all that, we can stay strong in whatever we face in the future.

We should deploy females for a short BMT and then proceed to admin roles. Maybe just 1 year of NS is enough. Now a days a lot of the war is not fought on the ground. There are so many positions females can command. We can effectively double the force count in Singapore with this. I don't really care about equality or whatever but I feel like the boost in force count is a huge benefit to all. We are no longer in the era where girls needs protection. Everyone can play a part now in defense.
My father was 19 when ns was established. And I would be the second after my brother in the family to serve
2 years (and ard a year if you include the months in reservice) is taken away from guys who have to do NS. I feel like NS shd just be a year,2 years is too much and from what ive heard after bmt for most its damn boring.

The Army will always change over time, I have worn 3 gen of army uniforms, I m old man haha seen the different changes, it's not necessary softer now just different combat environment need new changes in training methods.

I watched HBO's Generation Kill and I remember one of the characters in the show saying how food is bad on purpose so that the soldiers will be always been in some sort of a bad mood so they can be psyched to kill people. It kind of makes sense.

All the young ones will say they are training smarter as an excuse. But come on, it's true that the older generation have it tougher. I entered the army in the 2000, and even then the training couldn't be compared to 1990.
The only reason we are giving excuses and accepting all these facts is because we are born in a diff generation. We are not born into war torn countries... Because if we are, we won't be thinking about being 'smarter', is this necessary etc ..
Instead of coming up with excuses or reasons why it is now... I think it is better to count our blessing of the life we are living today and acknowledge that the past did have it tougher...

No need to fight a war with our northern neighbors. All their citizens have to do is to cross the causeway and apply for PR and HDB. In one stroke they can hold on to sinkie land and compete with locals for jobs.
How about kickstarting women serving NS Guys ? Something like nursing ?
Ideally, no one should be subjected to compelled labour. Nevertheless, if it is deemed to be essential, conscription should be gender-neutral and objective.
Unlike yesteryears, physical prowess is no longer the only or overarching attribute of a competent personnel. The technological landscape has evolved, so has operational needs. Our cohorts of NSF are also decreasing steadily in size due to low TFR. Manpower shortage is not only experienced in the combat vocations but non-combat positions too.
I believe that NS should be gender-neutral as what the Enlistment Act intended. It should also be progressively expanded to include more domains, including healthcare and social works. Assignment of vocations should be gender-neutral and individuals should be assessed objectively with regards to their attributes and interests. It should not be the default position that males be sent to combat roles and females to not-combat roles.
So what you're saying is rather than you go out to fight the war, Sg should send your sister instead? Sister do combat role and you do a non-combat role. Do you even hear yourself?? I agree that women can be enlisted in NS too and play their part but to say that it shouldn't be males by default is just stupid. Our bodies aren't built the same.
@@jen5138 I believe I said that the assignment of vocation should be objective, taking into account each individual's attributes and interests. The vast majority of combat personnel would still be males, but only because they are assessed to be objectively more suitable for such roles. As far as reasonably practicable, all personnel should be regarded as their own beings, rather than part of a collective identity.
How is it a problem (or more of a problem) if my hypothetical sister is deployed to combat whilst I support from the rear, if she is deemed to be more suitable and competent in the role compared to me? Is it shameful to be protected by women? Or is it that men are inherently more disposable? Furthermore, it would not change the reasonable hypothesis that most combat personnel would be comprised of brothers and non-combat personnel sisters. Still, this should be the outcome based on impartial evaluations, not some arbitrary thoughts.
Also, I'm not implying that non-combat roles are lesser in any way. I was an ammo technician myself.

Wow.....migraine can get one downgraded now!? I signed on, and I have migraine. Man.....standards have really dropped. Military equipment may be advanced now, but soldiers still need to have that physical and mental fortitude to withstand the rigours and horrors of war. All that physical "torture" during training is not just to strengthen soldiers physically. It's also to train their minds to push through the pain and physical barrier, so that in times of need, they're already mentally conditioned to be able to go further, fight harder, last longer etc etc. Our bodies can usually take a lot more punishment than we think. It's often our minds that tell us to stop, to quit, because we have no more strength, too tired, too painful etc etc, before our bodies break.
