138 for PSLE, went Normal tech - ITE - POLY and eventually got a Master NUS.
My PSLE score is 180, didn't pass my 'O' level. Still manage to push myself to take a private diploma, get a decent job and support my parents. Able to contribute to family and still have savings of your own, I think that's already pretty good.

PSLE score 206, went to Express, dropped to NA, flunked O-lvl, barely made it to poly, flunked diploma but am enjoying my current job in a MNC with decent income and flexible lifestyle. Achieving good grades just ain't meant for everybody, not everybody learn the same way nor pursue the same things in life.
Wow, how did you get into an MNC job when you flunked diploma? Sounds like good life.
Had 225 for PSLE, went to Express Stream (best class within Express in the neighborhood school), dropped to last Express class in Sec 3 after streaming (taking combined science instead of triple science) and just hair length away from retaining in Sec 2.
Finished O lvls with L1R4 28 points. Couldn't get into poly, including Nursing @ 28 points for all polys. Went to ITE and did Higher Nitec in Engineering. Retained for a further 6 months and only graduated after 2.5years.
Served 2 years of Mandatory NS, and pursue Accountancy after completion. Currently, I'm a chartered accountant, chartered tax professional and other chartered qualifications, holding senior position in a professional services firm.
PSLE score is 165. Yes very low. Nonetheless, I made it into NTU Currently in year 4. Everyone have different pace and I "woke up" after secondary school and happily in school now and in internships

My poly course mate was from ITE and he was one of the top scorers in our class because ITE laid a solid foundation for him for the diploma course we were taking. and I think the stigma associated with ITE has already been lessened somewhat.
I wouldn't mind listening to an hour long podcast held by them 🤣
PSLE score 149. I woke up in secondary school and worked my way to become the valedictorian. Went to normal NITEC for 2 years and now currently studying in poly. It's really saddening to hear or see people judge students from ITE but most of my best friends and good friends are all from ITE.

My PSLE score is 178, O level was 23 and failed english, still managed to graduate from SIT. Now working in a government linked company
PSLE score 142, went to normal tech, worked hard as I woke up in Secondary 2 and promoted to NA, passed N and O Level. Went to a local Polytechnic and did with a overall GPA 3.2. Currently working in a local bank. Everyone learning ability and curve is different~
My brother was also born in 1990. same like John's friend - he got double digit for his PSLE score (79 i think). he went to changkat changi and then subsequently ITE. he is now an engineer with a successful career. also the ex-gangster type, always giving me shit for wanting to get a degree. i think the educational system shift that early 90s kids had to go through is very interesting.

Personal thoughts: Why the older generations have the mentality that ITE is worse than poly and JC, because the cold hard truth is that they are the people working till managerial position (or salary paying levels) and they are the seating at the first row on how higher educated people are (majority) earning a higher pay as compared to people otherwise. Also, govt is subconsciously telling us this also as they are paying people according to educational level (and results they graduated in such that first class>second upper>second lower etc). It is also kinda linked to income level in a sense. (I know there are people who graduated from ITE and is being paid much more than Uni grads, but that might not be the majority?)
The mentality is there because they see the end results and thus derived the conclusion of a person's educational milestone in their life being worse off than other milestones.

I wouldn't feel safe hiring a doctor that fails his/her maths/science. Just an example of why education still matters. How would you expect the employer to assess a candidate in the absence of any verified credentials (e.g. education etc)? Besides if you have trouble even passing basic education and getting into poly/JC, that would place significant doubts on your ability and persistence to learn on the job? Hiring is always a gamble to employers and they in their right mind will always make the best bet (although there could an extremely capable candidate that is poorly educated). Besides if you think you are within minority few who can make big bucks with a poor education, then why would this even affect you? I don't think successful non-grads like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Albert Einstein or Ma Yun even bother to keep bashing social norms/perception about education. They just move on, and do what matters, because they are confident of their capabilities beyond academic and social perceptions do not affect them regardless.
I was from ITE, and realized that I actually loved it there because I was more 'hands on' as they say. Books was not really for me, but I was excellent in doing hands on work. But I guess paper still counts in the outside world now and the stigma will still remain for now

It all started when "I not Stupid " movie was released sometime during my lower primary school days. There was a running joke in the movie that had a parent calling ITE is the end. From that day onwards, everybody was talking and laughing about it in school.

My PSLE score was 187, never did O Levels, went to ITE -> Poly -> Uni and currently working as a software engineer
Psle score 184, went into NA stream. Always have a dream to do design/art in ITE especially I did well for my art subject but overshadowed by my bro and sis as they have good grades and went to express/jc/uni so I got forced by my family to go into Sec 5 O level but I failed and then went into army at 18 because couldn't get into ITE as admission is closed. After army I went back to ITE and then Higher Nitec and subsequently made it to Poly studying visual effects and mograph. Now just finished my internship at a AR/VR company and going to be my job soon. I totally went on my own path ever since came out from NS and my school fees from nitec to 2nd year of poly were fully covered by my own PSEA. Total I studied 7 years in tertiary but I don't regret because I gained alot of experiences and technical skills. I learned to use every Adobe software and multiple 3D softwares and can do most design work.
Didn't like studying. PSLE score 188, went to Express, dropped to NA on Secondary 2, didn't bother with O-lvl since didn't like studying, went to NITEC, then private diploma, after that now a decent income at an MNC as an Assistant Manager. Took 9 years to work my way up.
Now working on progressing to a part time degree

Good motivational speech but let’s get real, everybody’s situation is different.
The educational system is indeed skewed in a way which dictates the availability of your future choices of quality jobs from a very young age. Not everybody has the time, energy or financial resources to flip the boat back up, so to speak.

The education system never sparked creativity as John said. But only recently for the 2010s T/Gen Z kids that it changed to bring creativity
What school you go to matters but it doesn't matter if you get nowhere. How you make use of your situation in the current school is all it matters. You can be in a great school but if the lecturer or teacher can't teach or create an environment that makes it enjoyable the end results as always seen is nobody does well. When a lecturer makes a subject enjoyable and likable, student tend to do better and take more effort to.
PSLE score 191. Went to Express but dropped to NA and didn't do well for my O's so I went private after that to complete my diploma and degree. Used to be in Sales & Marketing. Currently a Financial Consultant :) Grades really don't define you or your future.

False. It is abt testing what you are good at. If you are good at hands-on stuff, then u go ITE. The system aint abt sending ppl to unis. I think many of you dont understand the purpose of ITEs, Polys and Unis. Different schools for different skillsets for different jobs. Simple concept.
surprisingly sg education system is really good at testing how smart you are, considering that those who do very well in jc and manage to secure places in tech,medicine,law also tend to do well and then they also do well in their jobs. Saying this as a jc noob that is struggling in uni.
I never experienced "streaming" in my school as I attended a Madrasah in Singapore. Didn't have to do PSLE. Aced my "O" levels. Didn't do that well in A levels. Attended a local arts college as I'm passionate about design. Attended uni part time while I work in the tech industry. My salary is above 16k a month now. Live in a condo that I bought with my hard-earned savings. To be honest the global tech companies that I've worked at do not give a shit if you attend elite pri/sec schools or not. I've never been asked about what grades I got for O or A levels in any of the companies I've worked at. They look at how good you can get things done, whether you can think on your own feet, find and solve problems, create business impact, have a good attitude and a healthy dose of ambition.
I see how streaming really put a lot of unnecessary pressure on my peers who attended govt schools. Kids shouldn't be made to think or feel like they are such a failure when they are still growing and developing. Their brains are not even fully formed yet but the schools are already "branding" them in a sense. I'm not an educator but I personally don't believe in "streaming" as I saw how it impacted kids morale in such a detrimental way.

PSLE 194, Flunked O levels in the 30s scoring region, was told that I was doomed for failure.
Well, my Geography teacher was positively astounded when the prelim paper was done from an Econs standpoint instead of Geography. Nonetheless, still flunked it due to marking criteria.
Went ITE then to Poly, Got a double major degree in Econs & Finance at Murdoch, 2nd Upper region
Personally, the change was getting to choose which topics that are interesting and of value in the later stages of education.

Grades are not you, it is merely a test to see how well you fit in their system, which is unlikely a person's actual potential.
On a side note, financial literacy is really one of the essential keys for personal growth IMHO.
My PSLE score was 187, 1 pt away from 188 which is the score to go express stream.. enroute to take results still haolian to parents say confirm can go express end up kena jialat jialat...
Only completed up to N levels and ended up going to ITE for a year of NITEC.
Fast forward, I'm ended up bridging into Uni with a private dip after NS and graduated with a double Degree. Working in an MNC now..
Grades does not define your future... If you have the grit and determination, eventually, you can excel in life.

PSLE score 176. Commissioning Engineer. Started in NA -> Express -> Poly -> Uni. Difficult road but I still made it. Hard work and drive. Currently pursuing my passion as an Engineer.
wow! good for you! how was the transition from NA to express? I was offered the same, but didnt think i could cope so i didnt but my batch did have a "through-train programme). Only 1 out of the only 3 people who had took up the jump did well and the other 2 really fell behind so I was always curious as to, is the change really drastic?
@@eunagiiiThe transition was not easy. I was actually given a chance. If I could not make it, they will put me back to NA. I had to prove myself. It was hard but I pulled it off eventually.
PSLE 245. Went to an ‘elite’ sch and then scored L1R5 4 points before ending up at a slightly above average jc. Got into a top UK uni and graduated before finding work there. Few years ago had to return for family reasons and have jumped between a few different jobs in the industry since then. Now at a very reputable company that overworks and treats it’s staff like shit but pays well. About to quit this job to do my masters in japan. Life is short and unpredictable as hell, do what makes you happy and spend time with your family.

My PSLE score was 167 😂 Went to NA then did well in Woodlands “ITE” (as per what others say) and ended up in NTU. Life works out in the end and no school is bad. I agree with what they say about ITE and how it’s not it’s the end but rather a beginning for those who are not academically inclined

@@MrBoliao98 missing the point of my comment. Anyway, I have over 10 friends who went ITE and ended up in poly then taking on bachelors degree. I’m trying to emphasize that ITE is not the end and they are pathways beyond it also.
They actually train quite well in ite, I see my frens inside come out all not bad
Republic Polytechnic is NOT ITE.
I got 183 for PSLE, retained a year in 3NA, did ok for N levels (NA), went to take O level at sec 5 and messed up. Afterwards didn't continue my studies liao.
The question is pretty silly, since the answer is obviously yes, ITE is worse. It doesn't mean that you can't turn your life around and improve upon yourself. But denial of reality is rather odd.
You are not determined by your exam scores. Not everyone is academically inclined. In Singapore, doing well in your studies is the easiest way to succeed, but that doesn’t mean you cant succeed if did not do well in school. You just have to do something different. My PSLE score is only 192, quite thrash for Asian Parents standards. I am 27 now, earning more than 6.5k/month. So no, studies dont determine everything. With that said, it does not mean you Fck care studies and do whatever you want, as i said, studying is the easiest way to succeed in SG, if you suck at it, then u must be prepared to be good at something else.
278 for psle and then went to top sg sec sch. got discouraged of study in sec, was the bad kid in sch and got expelled. now working in mac.

I think about it this way ah, if my child can don't go ITE, i rather he not go lah. But I won't fault him if he is a slow learner or what not. Although I would say that there are probably many ITE students who have the capability but are simply playful or lazy. I mean ITE is there for students who are not suited for the traditional academic route mah and there is nothing wrong with that. But at this point, the narrative has shifted so much that a lot of students look down on the traditional route. I mean if you have a legit plan of what you want to do when you are 15 then okay ah, but if you're just saying "oh there are many paths to success" (which I completely agree with), to sort of undermine the importance of education, then it's a pity lor. My take is don't glorify not giving your best, understand that there is value in our education system and give some effort first. 2cents

Some people are just slower (not necessarily slower in learning either, just slower in their life journey to reach their own definition of success & that could be due to being lost/ lazy etc.) & there is really nothing wrong with that (other than time may not be on your side la).
As for being lazy in particular, I think need to cut primary school kids, maybe even secondary school kids, some slack. Of course, parents should encourage self-discipline & diligence but sometimes kids are very hard to teach, I mean they are only 12 years old, we also know kids are immature so why do we expect them to understand so much & at an adult level? Also, you do not want kids to be without a joyful childhood. I think just set good example & emphasise on the importance of diligence but do not be too strict & a playful/ lazy kid will soon come to realise they need to buck up. Playful when young can be a good thing too (see more, experience more, learn more, more happy memories) just need to monitor that they do not fall prey to bad influence.
Also agree that in the recent few years it seems to be a not so uncommon thinking amongst kids that education is unimportant because they can easily take the non-traditional route of “making it” online. While I do see more alternative routes to success now & I encourage daring to be different, a proper education is still important, do not suka suka drop out of any school unless the school is legit crap & you are not learning anything valuable/ even correct (cough cough SOME private universities here).
Also, education is really to train you to think & open your mind. Do not treat it just like you need to get that paper. Although sad to say that paper is very important in SG (at least die die get a diploma, else you need to already have a realistic workable plan, not just some flimsy idea).
The older generation also need to wake up their idea. A degree is not everything. A degree in SG especially does not even guarantees a person’s capability. Then there is also attitude. Employers need to be more ready to give non-degree holders a chance to prove themselves, provided that they shine at interviews la. And what’s with the pay grade system under which one can only get a maximum salary of X if they only hold a diploma as opposed to a degree? I can understand at the start there is a pay difference but why is it that a diploma holder must work so much harder than a degree holder to earn the same/ even less? Makes no sense. Parents should also not punish kids who do not go to university/ have a “good” job. Just be glad that your kids are healthy, not dabbling in some illegal crap, working hard to earn an honest living, not financially struggling, is happy & not ignoring you. At the end of the day, this whole “status thing/ my kid so smart thing” does it really matter when you are old? To each his own but if it does really matter to you then you probably have not matured after all those years of living. And also be supportive of kids who genuinely find themselves not suitable for the traditional academic route. Go polytechnic/ ITE really would not die. Maybe your ego will die only. And recognise that there are many new jobs out there now. You do not need to understand them but do not be so quick to judge & disapprove them just because you refuse to even try to understand them.
Exam results doesn’t define you and it is definitely not the end. I have friends who have done so bad and are super successful and happy in their life. Just find and search for your own goals. 💕
btw been loving the content - just wanted to a drop a comment about the financial literacy point. back then, interest rates were much higher, so if you put your money in the bank, they would give you 5%++ - can ask your parents too. that's why our older generation also didn't have financial literacy and only knew/know how to save money in the bank - it wasn't essential. of course that won't fly today lah. but I think it's more to do with the monetary policy landscape at the time than that the govt wants to keep people dumb and on the education/technical skills 'track'.
241. Left SG after O’s. Could barely survive in a different education system. Ended up with an accounting degree, couldn’t be motivated to get a job. Currently doing uni again for another industry and struggling greatly.

I have quite similar experience as Denise, especially at 27:01 cos currently in a so-called 'good' girls' school
Got 159 for my psle and managed to go into Normal academic due to affiliation. Went to the newest poly.. currently doing my phd.
In my school, above 200 was a miracle. I didn't even know of people who has scored more than 200 until I went to secondary school! Mine was 184, went to CHIJ normal acad (agreed with denise about principal's announcements regarding the reputation of our school among neighbours -she said, (i quote verbatim) "they are saying that we are a lesbian school!" and the whole school erupted in fits of laughter and then she was all serious and said: IS IT FUNNY???!)
I went through poly thereafter and there were people in my course (younger by a year, since i went through NA) who would tell my age grp that "it's amazing how you guys can still enter this course, it means you are pretty smart"... gosh it was so annoying bc NA people arent STUPID????!!! lol
Anyway there was a clear divide between the NA stream and the express stream, the former definitely being more rowdy but i haven't seen two groups of people who hate each other so much 😂😂

Hahahahahaha......my dream was to go lesbian school. but i was shy of a few points for express and they are pretty out of the way from where i live.... but after hearing horror stories online about the discrimination im not sure if i was glad that i didnt. sure my neighbourhood sch also got discrimination n bullying but at least i wasnt publicly shamed???
PSLE score of 129, Went to NT and scored 5 points. just graduated Nitec last year and now 1 more week to the start of my higher-nitec.TBH some of the best people you can meet are in ITE because in secondary school everyone bullies that 1 person but now everyone bullies that 1 bully. at least that's my class

I used to study ITE AMK NTC 2 during the late 90s to early 2k, then army came knocking from there i saw the breaking point when i was serving army, when i saw thsoe bookworms JC became officer and is blur like sotong cmi but yet is an officer just because he got A level ..., then i truely understand SG is a conventional country no cert = lower chances prospect in corporate ladder, then i ORD from NS and determine to get at least a diploma, so i continue Higher nitec at ITE Tampines got a 3.6 GPA and within 2 weeks i got enrol into Singapore Poly full time, by the time i completed my diploma, i was already 27 kinda old for a fresh grad, i believe in life you set a goal and you are determine and you can achieve anything in life. Minimum i feel at least a diploma in singapore just sharing my experience, At least now I'm content in life right now being a manager in a financial instiution and having a stable income to provide my family.
I honestly appreciate International School's mindset, wished I had a better teenage life in public school

I agree that we shouldn’t discriminate against ITE students, but we also shouldn’t pretend as if these students have done well academically and that ITE is the “first choice” for some students. No it’s not. Whatever course you can pursue in ITE, it’s better to pursue it in Poly or Uni. Instead of telling society to pretend like ITE students are doing well in life, we should instead ask, “okay you haven’t done well in your academic journey so far, what can we do to help you change tracks or improve in your academic results?” This is important also because students who study in JC, poly and uni deserve to be proud of what they have achieved, they don’t have to diminish their own academic achievements just to be “equal” with the ITE students.

The 68 score is actually possible. Unless he is in EM3. I got 87 and I was from EM3 stream, I remember there was only 3 subjects that were graded during PSLE which is English, math and basic mother tongue. 3 subjects a total of 300 score divided by half. So if you score 136 / 300 your final grade is 68. The reason for the divided score was to prevent EM3 students to go Normal academic stream pathway even if they had a perfect score. Your friend might have did well for 2 of his subjects but and an Undergrade which failed badly for either one subject that pulled his overall grades down significantly.
I didn’t go poly ite or jc but private diploma then private degree route took 3 years in total. But if I had a choice I would still go private diploma or jc. Cos even I go poly I’ll waste 3 years and maybe I might go local Uni. If I know I can’t study well but want to have a degree I would take the private route. ITE is a v long route in the end. It’s not bad but not recommended.

There was this person in the neighborhood that Me here, grew up in. He was strict and harsh, and gained an infamous reputation in the surrounding block of flats where he lived. Didn't help that he attended ITE. Never could look at those students the same way again.

185. Designer. Found out im a creative person in secondary school. Dont give a shit about other lessons just Focused on art. Entered design school through interview. 🤣 glad I didn’t study in sec sch, cause clearly it wasn’t for me. then now everyday just sian need to think creatively. No room for creative block. To me, Normal Technical student should be allowed to enter ITE right after their PSLE. The biggest issue I see in regards to the educational system is the time gap after graduation.

There are many different types of career and path. A high percentage of the education system and the educators were developed in the industrialization era when Singapore was just booming and need alot of 'followers'. I give you recipe, u just follow and produce what I need.
Era has developed. But not as fast as we thought. Sg is actually very lack behind in many area like financial literacy skills or creativity.
I was teaching different classes in graphic designs, you can roughly see know who will be the worker (doesn't know what to do, need spoonfeeding but can do a great job, but doesn't know how to think independently), who will be the innovators (modify and create something interesting) and who will be the entrepreneur (analysing what is required and play along the requirement, skill is not the finest, but ideas are fantastic, can hire the worker to produce fine works).
Fun fact: I am a 16-year-old student now and all the stories and events ACCURATELY HAPPEN TO MY LIFE IN SCHOOL. Even the story of the teacher video being leak. Jesus.
I went to ITE for my Enrolled nurse course and then went to Australia for my degree within 2 years instead 3 years cos my results were good for I got credit off and I ace and the rest is history.
Now almost everyone in Singapore is a university grad. So does this comparison even matter today? With a decreasing student population over the past years, it is increasingly easier to get into NTU/NUS/SMU because universities need money to survive. You can even get a degree from local private institutions, which in the past was only available overseas. If you want to be average, that's fine, just do whatever you want. But wanting to be the crème of the crop is a whole different ball-game all together. What makes you think you can be an actuarial scientist (for example), if you have trouble excelling Mathematics in school, or to be a medical surgeon if you can't even pass biology? It is also the responsibility of every parent and teacher to want the best out of every child (of course appropriately) rather than telling the children/student chin-cai with any results. Only an irresponsible tuition teacher will honey coat words to a student when he/she is obviously not doing her best. A young adolescence mind will truly get the wrong message if he/she is told grades do not matter. Such pressure is often conflated with the impression of life-and-death advice (i.e. you don't study you die), which is simply untrue. Can't take a little academic pressure/criticism when young? What also scares me today is people thinking that creativity is defined strictly by successful You-tubing and social media elites. Creativity is also happening in many other boring and high value jobs out of public limelight (problem solving, R&D etc.). I was a mediocre student in school, but I don't try to find excuses or success at hindsight to justify my past failures, and I have learned to respect that some people are simply better than me in learning. Move on and stop bearing grudges over your past failures, Kids.

Fyi, foreigners are required to have four A* in A level to be accepted into ntu and nus. Meanwhile Singaporean can be admitted with B grades.

If you ask those that discriminate whether you should judge someone based on how much they earn/if money is everything in life chances are they would say no but yet when you ask why they discriminate against ITE students, usually ppl make some sort of comment abt them not having a future. Huge hypocrites.

If as an employee,you want dudes with strong theoretical skills,go for JC.Poly,it really depends,as for ITE,they are extermely strong in their technical skills.
