Junior college and polytechnic are two of the major education routes one has in Singapore after completing secondary school. These two routes are known to be vastly different, with two different environments for two different types of students. Watch as we dive into some of the similarities and differences between the two systems, and some advice for people choosing between the two routes.

I personally regretted not going to JC. Don’t get me wrong, I love poly and the experiences and internships I had there. But the fact remains that it’s really hard for poly students to enter local unis (NTU,NUS,SMU) . My course had one of the highest admissions to local unis and it was probably only 30% max. Other courses go as low as 5%. I’m not saying local unis are better. But it’s a fact that local uni students get better career & internship opportunities, higher starting pay and better networking opportunities. I would probably hate it in JC but from my POV, our system just favors JC students better and it’s worth it to suffer for 2 years just to get you a better head start.

I think it is very easy to blame the sg education system, but it's also our own responsibility to go to open houses or read online or whatever to find out about the courses and careers available. But i do feel some students do this more actively than others, that's y some will just go jc instead because they do not know what to do. Even after jc, many still do not think about what they want to do. To be fair, adults do career switch too, which means it's ok to choose a "wrong course". However, we just need to think about what we are interested in more

32:33 I don't know what kind of education policy Singapore has, but it seems to me from watching the video that it is a tight education policy like Korea. Singapore has more than one language you need to know, so I think it's more like that. Is it right? I know Singapore is learning English, Chinese and Malaysian.
If what I know is correct, it would be a really tight school life. I have a question, are you familiar with Korean culture, clothing, and dramas in Singapore>?

IMO, if Alistair is to end up in Poly at 16. He will be absolutely fine. Maybe not very certain and lost in yr1, the environment of adult education will mould u by year2 or 3. It will make u grow up with a different mindset, new found freedom. 16 year old is not young. The environment play a huge role to influence a person on top of his personality and maturity. It’s very obvious in the army, poly batch & A level batch. My grandma gave birth to my mum at 15. My mum started work at 14. So your background and environment develop your maturity and responsibilities. Whereas, today’s youth spend their prime years in school for education. That’s why they are not mature TIL a later age. They view themselves as don’t know much at 16 except exam smart. The formal and structured education at Sec & JC mould the student to be what they are even at 18. I took the poly route, the poly environment makes me grow up faster, cause I have to take charge of my education, no more spoon feeding. It’s not that I was matured enough at 16. That 3 years make me “grow up”. I was just a bookworm at 16. Grades is all I know. Anyway, my son is now in a ip school. I have a hard time exposing him to other spectrum of intelligence, eg. skills, arts, learning through experience, ...basically all the real stuffs. The exams, test, projects has consumed most of his time. Very unbalanced.

i would say the defining feature to succeed in poly is consistency. once a GPA drops it is difficult to bring it up again versus in JC where you just have to do well for one major paper aka A levels

True, unless you're looking to pursue a scholarship? Then I think the projected grades from Prelims or the papers before that are quite important, so consistency is quite important in JC too (because you have to start preparation early on in 2nd year of JC)
