- Is it lonely to be a Minister in Singapore? Do Ministers also struggle with mental health issues? How has the River Valley High School tragedy changed the way we approach mental health?
With the help of Minister Chan Chun Sing, we explore the many facets of dealing with mental health in Singapore.
(Psst! He also reveals his minister BFF in this ep!)
-
There remains a stigma against mental health issues and seeking help in Singapore, which needs to be changed.
With the #BetterTogether campaign, PAP encourages each of us to take ownership of our mental well-being, and rally others in championing mental health conversations.

hey, River Valley High student here. I think since we're on this topic and Minister Chan has touched upon the renewal of the place that the incident has taken place, I'd like to add some two cents. The place of the incident has been changed to a venue for students to visit if they were in need of such assistance, but as of now, has not been furnished and instead we do have an additional venue called "The Fountain" which may be a temporary location for students to talk to the school counsellor. I would also like to say that the school environment has improved a lot, and the school leaders have been trying to make school a more enjoyable, supportive and lively place for the student body, with the aforementioned "fountain" and a repurposed study lounge that now has more board games and mini table hockey and fooseball table! I think school hasn't been as lively as it was, but could also be due to the pandemic fatigue, but otherwise, I would think it's safe to say the juniors are still very much enjoying school and the recent school events have been nothing but a blast. here's to me hoping the school spirit has been passed on successfully LOL
I'll come back for an update if they managed to furnish the place after As. thank you for reading, kind stranger.
oh and another thing to add is we've got a resident cat named manja and everyone loves him. he brings me on tours around the school sometimes. I think his presence has definitely helped us cope better.
heyy fellow rvian here,, there couldnt be a better way to sum up the improvements of our sch! jiayous for As my friend :)
Ll
a resident cat is always healing. pets and animals really make a difference in any environment and to people
It is not the fault of the General it is the Institution they come out off from they just don't have the vision to run the country they are not equip to run the country they are not equip to deal with normal human being. They are should given projects go capture the hill but when you tell them to run the country it does not work.
would you say unfortunately the incident make your school better than before?
He is truly the people's minister. Very naturally engaged with the people like friends in a kopi session. Not many other ministers are like him.
Happy to see CCS trying to improve his PR after 2020 and trying to appeal to young voters as a person and not a meme.
Agreed. It's difficult to approach the public after being memefied like that but I appreciate his sincerity and courage.
He is very popular and well liked in the armed forces. His reputation there is very good. But his army style does not hit well with people who don’t know him well.
😂😂😂
Still an abeng down to earth minister 😅😅😅
Potential future EP🎉🎉🎉
I like this minister. He's super intelligent but people often misunderstand him.
I love that you guys brought in Minister CCS to talk on topics as this showcase the views that we may not have seen or heard . I encourage more of such platforms to bring them closer to the ground, to see how human they are to us, layman. Well done. Do bring on more as we too get to learn and understand them better on how they govern the country.
Thoroughly enjoy this conversation. It is informative. I think all ministers should have such conversations to explain their policies in a more informal setting.
oh, I am so happy CCS was minister. I hadn't realised. my convern with the river valley thing was a knee-jerk reaction to do something stupid like lock up all 'dangerous' equipment. which is completely impractical considering the wide variety of CCAs.
Minister Chan 👍 finally had a better understanding of your personality.
No worries of using singlish , we understand you more better this way and felt more comfortable.
Minister is a very difficult job , really appriceate your service .
And hope kids really listen to Minister Chan advices ,and try to have lots of fun when you are young :) , learn more life knowledge and skills which you a passionate with .
Most importantly be a courteous and humbler person 🙏
Can you guys do an episode with a couple of the Covid task force members? Would be interesting to hear what were the considerations made before certain safety measures were implemented !
Is there a part 3? I hope so. He's very engaging.
This is part 2?
@@ClueLessAnts yup!
it's crazy how the govt, students and parents rely so much on teachers emotionallyand psychologically, who also have their own families and other work matters or personal problems, teachers are humans too and they only have 24 hours in a day like everyone else
Was hoping that he will address the use of chatbot for teachers' mental health..
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and the previous episode featuring Minister Chan as his responses are so genuine and candid and doesn't feel scripted or politicized. 👍
I watched both Part I & II and really enjoyed it. Thanks for this production 👍🏻
happy you enjoyed it!
Now I understand why John said he love the comment section on TDK! It's really so wholesome and supportive and informative. ♥
One thing that CCS did RIGHT was to REDUCE the yearly charge by SNTC (special needs trust co) on trusts set up by parents of persons with special needs.
Let's put it this way, the more the state takes away from the parents of special needs person, the more the state will need to fork out for state care of such person. Simple
I think he is the most underrated Minister. He's good in engaging the people.
Love this content...Probably can do a politician or minister series. Maybe invite Minister Lawrence Wong or Minister Ong Ye Kung next!!
28:08 - I get what CCS is saying, but I disagree that only serious cases should go for therapy. Lots of reasonably healthy people go for therapy to work out some personal issues (eg insecurity, trauma from the past, etc). It's like hiring a personal fitness instructor (if you can afford it) to help you work on yourself. I agree it's fine to go to your friends for support, but they're not trained to help you process your issues and traumas (which everyone has).
If you have trauma from the past you are not a reasonably healthy person... That's serious case.
Insecurity is a you-problem council is the option not therapy
@@Fujiwara.Takumi1 bruh *everyone* has trauma from the past. How your parents raised you, how your school system shaped you, an unkind teacher, societal expectations - all that leaves marks on your psyche and shapes you.
Your conception of trauma is presumably "OMG something dramatic happened to me". But that is not the only type of trauma.
@@andrewrollout1657 that's what friends are for
The problem is if you can afford it. To get quality mental care you need to be consulting a trained professional and even in the US they are severely lacking in it. Not every counsellor or therapist are well trained and they are overworked because of this. Especially the more affordable ones or government subsidized ones. There's no one solution but it's clear that if you want quality counselling your best bet is being able to afford it which really is a problem because the lower you are on the economical spectrum, the likely you'll find yourself with a myriad of problems leading to mental health as compared to say someone who is able to afford a, as you tried to paint a picture, gym membership.
Start with counselling.
That was such a great conversation! Kudos to you guys for being able to ask such thoughtful yet relevant questions in order for us to have such insights into how Minister thinks!
you guys can pull in CCS to interview... kudos!
please invite Mr Ong Ye Kung to the podcast!!
18:50 I was hoping that the convo would’ve gone towards teachers’ workload and teachers’ mental health but sadly it didn’t
Pog episode in time for dinner
Thank you for this interview...congrats...I am very impressed.
We are blessed with good n humble ministers able to communicate with ordinary citizens
Last time the teachers do care for your mental health, they don’t have to be told to do so. I remembered my father passed away while in polytechnic, the lecturers and tutors do come and comfort me.
interview ministers more please
it will make them look more human
I'd like to see the bloopers and outtakes... :)
Well said! Facing hardship is part of growing up too.
JonPaul’s face at 24:51 🤣 cause same….
I agree with Denise. Mental health should be a public health concern and therefore professional help should be made financially accessible for the population. I understand there are free services out there but the waiting times are generally long and therefore may not be appropriate as psychotherapy requires a certain frequency to be effective.
Totally agree 100%
Would like to know what was the answer given by CCS on the last question about NTUC???
OHHH! So shes a two part episode ehhhh! Nice :D
I love Denise’s Ironman water bottle, so apt in the presence of our education minister 🤣
Very engaging n informative abt mental health. Esp in tis competitive world many people stress differently eg studies. ..relationship.....financial problem etc ... with community platforms to seek help not only it helps the person troubled mind it do help the family as well. Is glad tat nw mental health openly made knwn to public for those who need seek help early before its too late....
十分接底气的部长,赞👍!
Really liked this episode. I think it is really nice to get to see the point of view of some leaders at a more micro level and know how they think about more mundane things and how it elevates and reaches their level as well.
Nice! hey the outtake is interesting, did the minister respond to the "brother, sister" thing? haha
The ending was hilarious 😂. WLE!!!
On the topic of providing help at community level, Singapore Red Cross provides "Psychological First Aid Course" which is very helpful for the regular folks/working professionals/parents, etc to learn some useful skills to provide support in times where you encounter people in distress. :)
good episode. thanks for making this.
but i also feel sometime when helping people, some people will think that we have motive.
not related but Denise's bottle caught my eye I LOVE IT CUTES
She carries it around the office!
最接地气的部长,亲切!
Yes more sessions with all the 4G leaders …
wah lau. you guys really convinced me that this was a fresh shoot, LOL. wth
Society usually assume single parent family children are naughty, unintelligent, problematic etc. in other words negative comments.
In my opinion this is unfair & I hope the authorities can assist in this factor
nihilistic - rejecting all religious and moral principles in the belief that life is meaningless. Learned a big word today. Haha~ 😄
The daily word-chup!
Really not easy being a minister or a public figure.
Amazing interview!
ask Ong Ye Kung in as well please
biggest scandal is mp ccs not showering before gg to school
We have enough psychologist. I am one... Out of work. lol
sick ending
🥺
Qiu-Ren 🤣
Whosss nexttt
I wonder if it was awkward to do the intro again, considering the guest is now a minister.. HAHA
CCS should explain why private tuition is the norm in pre-tertiary education in Singapore. Why did the government come up with the slogan "Thinking Schools, Learning Nation"? CCS should explain why "thinking" became an issue, of all places, in schools? This is unique to Singapore. Local students are exam-smart but with poor analytical and communication skills. Why?
sorry third and last comment - still my favourite minister and PM of choice
has John gotten new eyebrows? and the other guy next to CCS a new head of hair?
We should guide with love, not mollycoddle a child
luv this channel. can we ask them why Ministers dont bother to dye their grey hair?
no time to dye hair 😂
- Sherms
We can't afford not to engage young people, especially for our national leaders, religious leaders, parents etc
Maliki was my awesome MP in the east🎉🎉🎉
Not yr see you b4 next GE type of PAP MPs😅😅
Dont understand y government. Then the father n mother do what?
What were u all laughing about at 27:35 🤔
Algooooooooo
Why you no subscribe to the channel though
Y’all missed the chance to ask if aliens are real 👽!!!!
is it possible to hypnotised someone to murder someone or do something dangerous?
Ministers who are not open and transparent and/or ignore tough queations from Singaporeans are "weak" and should be voted out.
yooo
First
even minister also know about andrew tate hahhaah
He is handicapped by his poor background and early life development. There is where he lost out to other ministers. I think he is not mean to be Spore PM, maybe DPM only.
I also don’t believe all schools are good schools.
All schools are good. Some are better.
@@KingfisherSG lol… 😂 All are equal! Some are more equal than the others.
👍👍The ruling party is trustworthy and reliable, unlike others which lie and lie and lie.
Yeah just like the party which promise no increase of GST and any increase is only resultant of improper spending and policy. In the end increase GST like no body business.
I agree. The others only know how to complain without knowing the rational behind certain actions.
@@cheyxnne you mean when PAP say strengthing the Singapore dollar will not do much for inflation only for MAS to so what he said that will not make much differences?
@@fr0sty1983 sorry to say dumb dumb will not understand what the gov is saying. Dumb dumb only listen to lies that take the gov words out of context. Dumb dumb also love listening to populist speech.
