In schools, PE is often sacrificed for make up class. This is one of the biggest mistake because physical well being is one of the most important to bring balance and strengthen the body. Also, PE must be conducted outdoors in open fields as much as possible. Because the disconnection with nature is another big factor than cause body imbalance. Being constantly indoor in enclosed space is bad and is aggravated further as more and more time is embroiled in digital world as well. The open spaces and being in connection with nature will bring back balance to the body. Physical, Mental and Emotional health is all connected. You cannot talk out mental imbalance without also treating the physical health which will surely be affected when mental imbalance happen. My 2 cents.
The weather has been raining lately so why must expect students to PE themselves under the rain ?
Still, there's indoor sports hall. The reason PE means a lot to students is mainly because its the one of the only times that they get to put their minds off academics. Not only will it make them feel energetic, but also less likely to fall asleep during class. Heyy, win-win situation.
@@bobafett5757 I did mention as much as possible right. Anyway, let me share further what makes outdoor vs indoor a huge diff. 1) When your body is in contact to Earth and not on paved grounds, positive impacts like free electrons flow into the body. You can search on Earthing documentaries that proves there are many profound impact when we connect to Earth. 2) Surely open air in green areas brings you much richer oxygenated air into you. The variation in temperature whether hot or cold trains the body to varying temperature. The flow of air (aka wind) can even blow your worries away 😊 3) The sun has a tremendous positive impact to many myopic Singaporeans. Ask eye specialist and he will tell you nothing beats being in open especially with morning and evening sun. The morning and evening rays of sunlight has tremendous positive and healing effect on your eyes. We are also essentially solar energized and appropriate sunlight will energize the body.
It is by nature works that our body needs striving and workout. Illness of all kind whether physical, mental or emotional will just get to you. Just look at Singapore, everywhere is clinic. Such is what modern city living has done to our state of health. Just look at the different generations and you observe a general weaker and weaker newer generation.
@@aaliyhjsmi Why cant school build its own gymn for students to exercise after lesson time as PE routine seems old fashioned
@@nicksonkoh Hello !!! Have u heard of indoor ventilation and air con also can still exercise inside indoor hall and open the windows for all oxygen to seep inside so no need to step out and basking under the sun
14:12 The young man Viaano Spruyt has represented the unheard voices of our young people in Singapore very well. A well thought out and deep question 👏
When I was 18 I had the best life. I went to MDIS because poly and jc felt too stressful for me.
And MDIS was amazing . What the minister said is true - don’t waste your youth ,enjoy your youth .
I went to many parties and it was the first time I travelled solo. Highly recommend that you enjoy your youth because now when I look back I miss it all . Having said that being a youth in covid times is a curse.
im sorry allow me to ask. is it true that companies dont pay u as a degree holder but as a diploma holder?
@@gammavelorum9551 after graduating MDIS? No they pay quite well. I suggest work for tech companies
@@Honeymagmangospoof Hm i was planning to study the degree in biomed actually
@@Honeymagmangospoof although i heard from some oldies that when u graduate from private unis ur downgraded in the workforce and paid a diploma salary...
@@gammavelorum9551 this is not true. I didn’t face any such issues while applying for jobs. If biomed is your passion you should follow your passion and apply , keep in mind what the median salary is these days for the biomed industry and during your job search be sure to apply to companies which offer that salary grade.
If biomed is not your passion and you are currently confused, then try to get into something more versatile such as arts. Keep in mind different industries have different salary grades - so while choosing a course especially in MDIS- see what suits you best first.
In my own perspective, social media is highly influential to the mental health of today's youth. They often compare themselves with others (beauty, achievements, skills & career standards) & absorb unreliable information from a gazillion of users globally. So, they must utilize social media healthily, e.g., cut down on screen time, filter sources of information, back away from bandwagon of trends, find their own niche and embrace their uniqueness, and focus on their own skills.
We are all not made in the same way. Whatever cards we get in this lifetime, we try to play them with our best effort. If one already tried his best, there should not be regrets or guilt. Be more accepting of yourself and don't compare with others unnecessarily. Accept that there will be ups and downs in life and one should go along with the wave and overcome each obstacle in our life and live with whatever we have. In the meanwhile, learn to pursue some hobbies for relaxation. Parents should just guide their children along as they grow up but not adding unnecessary expectations on the children, simply by comparing with their peers' children.
👍
Absolutely agree
Ever the sanctimonious types eh. Easy for you to say.
@@Magnalis You have your rights to choose your way of life. But sometimes we reach a point of unbearable stress, we have to find ways to lessen it otherwise one can just go crazy. I don't think it is easy to attain what I had mentioned earlier. Life is never an easy one in the first place but knowing that, we have to try to find ways to soften it.
It’s so strange. Do young people think the kids of the 1960s-1990s had no stress when competing in elite schools?
9:39 - 10:05
Problem posed: We the young are stressed.
Solution offered: Break out of that and see life differently.
In other words, it’s not the system’s fault. It’s your fault for not “seeing life differently”. For not having a better mindset. Wow. Poor Singaporean kids.
What are the root causes of mental illness is a very complex and tough question the DPM Wong and the taskforce is attempting to address. Applaud him and his team's bold endeavor. Looking forward to 2023 updates and further details. Really appreciate DPM Wong's preview on the approach to mental wellness by 1) destigmatize 2) building capabilities 3) addressing affordability.
"A lot of stress comes from comparison." Well, it comes from the overarching systems that we live in.
I think for Ovia it is not what she wants to drive herself into such a stress as an 18yo but it is the culture and the expectation of the country, family and society that have mould her and youth at her age to live and grow within the pressure cooker to the fact that they have lost the true nature and mind of what an 18 yo should have like what DPM answered. In order to tackle the issue like this, it is not just merely giving advice as what should an 18 yo think or not to think but rather to look into the education system, the expectations in school, in the society and the gov. This has been the way the gov shaped the people made the people live in pressure cooker and now you try to be nice to ask the people to live in joy to be like a normal youth as youth should be??
Thanx and congratulations CNA for this video shared with us all. With all due respect, gd morning DP Minister Lawrence Wong Sir.. 🤗🤗🤗🤗❤❤🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🌍🌍🕊
I myself was remanded in IMH, a good friend of mine once told me.
Dun be afraid to seek help
I experience angry outbursts and suffer from mental health. It takes a lot of courage to step out to acknowledge your faults, accepting that you need anger management and also to realign your values, how you can face others, but most importantly, facing yourself and coming to terms to yourself.
This forum, while I am listening to it now on RUclips, truly was beneficial, I know that I am not alone. Facing peer pressures, self demands and expectations, not realising yourself to the fullest potential. What DPM Wong said was really relevant and helpful.
And it's okay, everyone. Learn to value and love yourself before you can prioritise others. No one is responsible for your physical and mental well being. Be courageous, step out of your comfort zone, open up and be there for one another if you see people having a hard time. Hope this helps to anyone who is experiencing a difficult time right now, because right now, I feel you.
I know people who were below average during school days are very successful today if getting a decent paying job and fulfilling family and own ambition is one definition of success for some.
I loved your lines Mr Wong stating to have growth mindset, be ready to take set back and knock opportunity as becomes available. ❤️
Im glad that at 7:37 Lawrence Wong brought up even relatives are the source of toxicity, comparing every stupid things during festive gatherings. A radical change is needed to de-stigmatize this whole kiasu culture. This mental health thing, I find quite funny that different responses are given to different generational groups. Youngsters complain mental health, we relent. Working adults complain mental health, gets called off by management as chao keng. Boomer don't even believe on mental health, and even create their own theories and such. More bombardment of awareness in media and news outlets is critical more than ever.
Wonderful Mr.Minister, good way of Neglecting her, so nice, thanks.

Really thankful for DPM Wong for all the effort! 🎉We will celebrate forward Singapore as a nation.
the term "mental health" and "mental issue" is thrown around easily. While we are not making light of term, its good that we have a common understanding the definition of it.
Minister, not only human connections, but also divine connection. Meditation is divine connection.
Yes, absolutely Sir Lawrence Wong. Set back are part and parcel in life. Take it as an opportunity to proceed further so as to achieve a better eventualities. 🙏🙏✌
Right. Absolutely Sir DP Minister Lawrence Wong Sir.. 🇸🇬🇸🇬✌✌🤗🤗
I tend to worry too much and think too much about outcomes and the future. I find this very draining. I tried out meditation at Singapore Bodhi Meditation and it has a calming effect on myself and i am more energised. I think we need time to quieten down to clear our mind and recharge. At the same time, we also need to exercise. Best is to exercise outdoors where we can breathe in fresh air where there is an exchange of energy. I love getting close to nature and looking at trees and the sky.
He answered and facilitated really well.
Allow me to contribute to your talk. With the cost of living and goods constantly rising, many people who have done well, feel that all the efforts done are never enough. It’s exhausting just because a minority of hyper functional individuals perhaps traumatised and obsessed with success making them business owners expecting unbalanced or better said unsustainable levels of profits.
That leaves the rest of the society running out of ‘fuel’, discouraged, exhausted and anxious just to keep up with the ‘TREND’. Otherwise how to fit in hyper rich ‘never enough’ society.
Wise people do not keep up with the trend. They live within their means and abilities.
Hahaha
To reach that level of wisdom requires long time education and experience not to mention resources and besides, wise men and women nowadays are under threat and silenced.
The Middle Class, who in my opinion were the wise/balanced and sustainable majority in any modern society are now forced to adapt because what they do is not enough (work much harder and get extra income, another degree, etc) or deprived oneself and your family of modest comforts that provided wellbeing.
All because a minority is obsessed with EXCESS.
Wisdom is something that used to predominate when humanity came out of the imperial dark ages. I feel that today real wisdom is being forced to silenced and the only ticket to ‘peaceful life’ is submissive slavery while the world leaders under the command of a sick elite switch to a game of tyranny and wars. CONCLUSION: the elite that is pushing ‘exploitation of resources’ while destroying our world, did not studied history, nor science, much less philosophical thinking. Where’s the wisdom?
I find it in the SLOW MOVEMENT.
@@veronicaalessandrello1022 u got any proof and statistic?
I’m pretty confident the WEF can provide you with that information. I’m only part of the statistics. Globalisation has globalised the problems. So although this talk was only addressed to Singapore, the global context affect us all. I live in the UK and the Bank of England just increased my mortgage payments £250 a month. Not to mention the price of fuel that has a huge knock in effect in everything we depend on food, transport, even wellbeing. I haven’t got any pay rise so I’m forced to find a part time job or another form of income that requires more investments that are not free of risks. Honestly, Pretending to alíviate stress, anxiety in todays society by increasing support in mental health is like trying to cover the Sun with a thumb. (Now, that’s wisdom from an ancient Afghan proverb)
What cause the stresses?
The root cause in Singapore is cost of living.
Few days ago - NTUC support call me , asked why I want to terminate my 16.5 years of NTUC link membership.
She said I've clocked about $69/- of rebate for this year. But I told her there is no rebate as I pay $117 dollars a year for membership. I don't use their insurance and I cannot get benefit from the learning courses. I'm retirees and I have to paid for the courses and able to claim back only $500/- on condition. .. the coversation continue.. I'm convince I should terminate the membership. If you are not a union members. NTUC give only 2-3% of discount only on certain days of the week on your purchases. NTUC made $117,000,000 each year just on these membership.
If the income gap is not narrowed and the government allows workers to continue to be exploited by race to the bottom wages with no reasonable minimum wage and unlimited foreigners hungry to steal your lunch then all singaporeans, starting from their schooling years are always going to struggle with their mental health. The current government's approach is great for businesses but bad for the people's mental health. It doesn't matter whether you remove exams and grading in schools the same problem is going to continue until you pay everyone a fair living wage.
Why not just say or admit u r weak? Lol
The only solution is to tax people like you more, talk so much but don't want to spend your own money to help other people.
@@Jack-hy2ki lmao this joker expect gov to "pay everyone a fair living wage". what is fair? everyone (regardless of industry, public or private) draw same salary? or everyone in the same industry earn a flat rate regardless of performance?
this type of ppl nv reflect y they earn so little while their peers earn more. its always someone else's fault for why they are in their current situation. if u think foreigners r here to steal yr job then why dont u go apply to be cleaner or construction worker, there is huge demand there
How many people do you know are paid $S0.01 an hour? People are currently being paid market rate which happens to be what it is currently. While it is true that these massive corpos are making tons of profit, Singapore is dependant on being a profitable place to run business. To be honest, if the govt does too much redistribution, it may spook the goose that's laying the golden eggs.

Mental health I am also close to that . Because I face mental health issue since 16yrs. Tbh back than I receive no HELP from the government. And I took breaks abt 15yrs ago and work in fnb . Right now I am 30 😢 facing the aftermath of mental health. Doing my part time work and part time study under (ite ) but I found out there is still no help from the government either because of my age . What I worried now is the inflation since I earn the minimum wages from my part time jobs . 😢
I asked my grandparents and parents this question. Their answers are pretty straightforward. They said as an average blue collar, they are working like slaves to make ends meet, where got time and energy to talk what mental thing? Nowadays you youngsters are too pampered to think this think that.
Question is: governments and even profs/teachers always emphasize that grades are not important. Yet, as we transit from diploma/degree to the workforce, our results are still reflected in the degree audit. In addition, many recruiters also that they DO look at results. If that's the case, why are we forced with the information that results are not important?
Understand that results may be important as we transit from maybe primary to secondary because they categorise students based on different learning speeds. Yet when we are out to the workforce? hmm not quite

Maybe we can ask the homeless girl somewhere in another part of the world, cuddling her baby brother in her arms, sitting by the street side, wondering if they will get to eat at least once in the next few days, are you mentally stressed out? Our youths are just too cocooned in the safety and comfort Singapore and our parents fought hard to provide to really appreciate how good they've got it. Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times. Are we associating stress with an issue here? Pretty sure in our country the problems we face pales in comparison with what's going on internationally. If we adopt an over-protective mindset we risk creating a new generation of snowflakes. Status quo is fine as it is now
Singaporeans generally have enough to eat, a shelter over their heads and a functioning healthcare system. If what's causing stress stems from one's intention to compete with peers, be it in school or at a professional level, that is exactly how a fast paced society should function and there's nothing bad about it.
*All respect to Lawrence for his effort in participating in this Youth Forum*
All These years, it seemed that our government failed is to realize that the youth of today needs spiritual support such as meditation. Mental development we already have, more than enough, but spiritual support such as meditation is no where to be found.
After his wife passed away, LKY was depressed. Someone suggested meditation and he tried. Then he realized how meditation had helped him to gain inner peace. In an interview on meditation, LKY said to the effect that school children should learn meditation in school. He even said that before world leaders make any important decisions, they should meditate first.
What our ultramodern society has not learnt is to appreciate spirituality. Most people don't even know what is spirituality in the first place. All they thought is religion or some kind of practices associated with ghost. The mass media portrayed spirituality in a very wrong manner.
The government vehemently kept away from such knowledge. They don't want to deal what this kind of things. They have never learnt how to meditate, except for one or two ex ministers. Most MPs have never crossed path with meditation or spiritual masters. To them, these kind of things are best stayed far away from them. They simply shut their minds from such things. As a result, they are very very ignorant. That is why Lawrence Wong cannot properly answer that question.
Meditation not only bring peace. It brings light and inner happiness. The youth of today are spiritually bankrupt. They have nothing inside to call upon when they feel stressed. They are feeling very empty inside their hearts. Their breath has no substance or life energy. They are merely breathing in empty air.
When you meditate, you are breathing in peace, light and bliss. These are not imaginary things, they are very real. They are cosmic energies. Right now, your breath has nothing. Every time you breathe, you feel a kind of excruciating pang inside your heart which you cannot describe. You just feel lousy.
My meditation master Sri Chinmoy once wrote: ‘It is ony through inner peace that you can find true outer freedom.’
Hope bring good for today.
We security guards have great stress to earn 110 to work for 12hr
Where as civil servants work 8hrs to make 5k to 6k.Govt shd enforce 8hr to earn 110 a day. Where as i' Australia and Western countries are practicing 8hrs to earn 110 per day
Mental health are due to the high h d b prices n slow increment that will never able to catch up the sky price of h d b prices increased not to mention cars or other luxurious , a flat costs higher than their whole life can earn not to mention save for retirement. Further more with the ever more foreigners coming to Singapore that are taking away good paying jobs that local have the quality but those companies preferred imported are better than local breed . Is not always the fact that many jobs local don want to take up, those jobs taken up by foreigners thou their salary are not as high as local but their currency can expand back home whereas what we earned here are what u get . Foreigners men comes here can directly get a good paying job whereas our local men have wasted 3 years doing n s after that have to further their studies in order to get a job that not always are better paying better than foreigners. Even those seniors they suppose can retire happily n look after their grandchildren but due to their children also have life commitment having a family with the high costs of basic flats that will tie them for life on the flat that are getting smaller n higher price.
Singapore did very badly on mental health illness and disability. I am one of them these things happen to me for more than 50 years. Even me mp knows she told me to wait ror durian to drop.
It is the corporate world that insist in results, in profit, means stress deadlines customers services and obligations. This world wants to generate money so we can get the services and things to make us worthy which we think it is. The stress will come in once you have to start working to make money after school or army.
How to have good mental health? Simple. Have no expectations. No expectations, no disappointment.
I wud suggest put some limits on junk foods sugars level and seeds cooking oils, also hormone levels in the milks as so many nutrition related you tube ch available about health minds.
Also more helps for more affordable advises and help group. Singapore private specialist in places like Mount E started at S$ 250 is just crazy. 2 years ago it was 150, and before that $110 5 6 years ago.
Wow wow wow wow 👌 👏
Actually I have a question: Although in our grandparents or parents time, maybe the income to housing ratio is relatively similar. However it’s also mentioned in this talk that we CANNOT expect the same GDP growth anymore. So can we say that in this generation since we will not expect high GDP growth and we have high population growth, job competition AND housing to income ratio stays relatively the same while at the same time housing sizes decreased rapidly. The wealth accumulated by our grandparents generation is passed to NEW citizens. Question 2) can this generation of Singaporean then proclaim that we are WORSE off compared to our grandparents and parents generation? Considering the fact that they were in the developing ERA and we are actually WORSE off. MOREOVER, the housing size shrink extremely a lot as well. So MOM, HDB and ICA should reconsider their positions. DECISIVELY and SWIFTLY before all the accumulated trust crash? I love the effort by DPM Wong. However looking at this video the second time, together with all the consolidated points allowed me to reason why this generations is feeling what they are feeling.

Mental health issues in Singapore has nothing to with individuals carving their own niches .. the real mental problem thats existing obviously stems from its government authoritarian style of governance plus the dirt expensive costs of Utopian living structure.. and not forgetting nature scarcity .. you don't identify mental agrravation with exploring opportunities except how an establishment is being run plus how hard it is hitting the society.. more to add until then ..
Small country. Natural resources are ourselves. Meritocracy to race to the top & at the same time push the nation. However, the race to the top while is an achievement, some falls in the bracket of having to meet standard of livings.
Some blame social media. Social media is here to stay. Instead of avoiding which is clearly naive, you have to learn to live with it.
High time for Lawrence to look into TCs, NEA and HDB which are not doing anything to put an end to the increasing cases of nuisance neighbours experienced by Singaporeans all across the country and these public offices seem to condone their actions instead by pushing responsibility from one to the other and even the police does not seem to be able to keep the mental health of Singaporeans safe and sound.
