I recommend using bananas as positive reinforcement instead of the threat of pain or fear. You can consult elephantnews videos with Lek Chaillert or her organization Chiang Mai Thailand if you want guidance on that.

I believe the negative comments below are unwarranted. We don't know this baby's full story, how he came to be at the wildlife center, or how sick or injured he was at that time. This playtime is important to get him out of his concrete pen, so he can feel the grass under his feet, and get a feel for the water. And I don't see the wildlife officers as being abusive; it looks to me like roughhousing play. The kind of aggressive play the baby elephant would be experiencing with his older siblings and cousins if he was in a herd. Hopefully, the end result is the baby being integrated into a herd of other rescued elephant and allowed to live his life in the forest.
Seasons... The roughhousing I understand, but what seems to be wrong here is the STICK.
If he is sick he shouldn’t be there. He is more controlling than playing.

I have watched many elephant videos and cat videos because I'm very fond of both these creatures. I'm also a life-long student of Behaviorism. I watched all eight minutes of this video and I wonder why there are so many people who've watched it and say this baby elephant was treated cruelly in the video. I don't see that at all. From what I could see, this baby was having a great time! -- just as most juveniles of any species (including human). What appeared to some folks that the baby was "pushed over" by a handler was part of "play fighting" which is something that young animals need to do in order to learn their own defenses but is also fun for them. A three-hundred pound baby can not be knocked over with a light push. The stick one of the handlers carried was never used as any kind of punishment and appears to be just a "prop," or he could have been used to carrying it as a habit when working in the field with animals (as an extension of his hands to gently touch an animal to alert them or guide them).

"A prop"?? You can't know this. The stick becomes a bullhook when he grows up and THAT is intolerable. I believe this young animal was truly enjoying himself also. But there is no good reason for the stick.
