  • The retro craze takes hold of Yamaha's new motorcycle. But does 1960s styling belong on a 2016 sportbike? Or is the hipster XSR900 simply lost in time? RyanF9 revs Yamaha's latest "Sport Heritage" to find out.

      I couldn't agree more. I think the production values of this channel easily match what a lot of channels with dedicated production staff are putting out, and in a lot of cases beat them, and for a channel of this size, brilliant.

    The line where he says "If I wanted a naked sportbike, I would get a naked sportbike". I think he just solved it without realizing it. It is a full fledged naked sportbike. It just has more of a UJM styling approach.

    • @LunringNassar
      @LunringNassar Год назад +3

      Reason he didn't mention the MT09 and disapproved the XSR as a naked sportbike is that the XSR lacked some tech that the MT09 had.

      Thats actually a common problem with the Bitwell Gringo helmet... If you go to fast, the wind pushes up on the helmet. More style then safety. Pretty cheap helmet, cost $150 without a face shield and $200 with one.

      My commute is 450 miles (at least once per month, for 2 to 20 days at a time).
      The city I live in half of the miles driven or ridden are highway.
      Most years only 15 to 20 days of real rain, and less than 10 days of snow or ice.
      I would also use the bike for road trips both interstate, and one round the world trip coming up.
      Do you think this bike seems appropriate to my use, based on that description?
      Thanks

      @@Rick_Sanchez_C137_ Rick Sanchez C137 It'll work, but I don't think a 450 mile highway trip isn't something you'd really like on a naked. If you get a windscreen that'll fix a lot. A tourer will probably be better for the highway (Or a car..), but if you wanna lose some comfort on the highway for more fun, then go for it! I dont own the 900 but the 700 and love that one.

    This Yamaha blew my mind with its intricate details and finishes like the headlight clamps, the nuts and bolts, the whole bunch of its machined parts and all of that for such a small price if compared to its European rivals. I loved it to bits. Indeed it doesn’t make too much sense but it is such a good bike that one true bike lover could not ignore. The moment I saw the 60th anniversary edition in yellow/black colour scheme I honestly regretted my latest acquisition made on impulse only three weeks earlier. After having ridden the XSR900, I agree with your conclusion, somewhat. The bike's motor is stellar, power just builds upon itself all the way to redline. It's a beast much like the 5 valve FZ750 was back in 1985. Yet it's a retro bike. But what about the ride modes? If you find it too much, why not switch to B mode and leave it there? Now it's a more civilized retro bike and you have the options to go faster the days you feel like a hooligan.

      Personally, I would ditch this 'power mode' business completely and let the rider be the one who controls the flow, no matter what the weather, road conditions etc. That's always been one of the crucial skills of riding.

    I love your videos, and I liked this one, too, but I am in LOVE with my XSR900. It is the most complete motorcycle from a performance standpoint I have ever ridden, and by complete, I mean 500% of what I expected after watching all of the glowing reviews out there. I mean it has redefined what is possible. Obviously, then, I don't care whether it "finds itself" in a particular category or cross-over category, because it's just me a the bike out there enjoying that dance of danger and fun...but doing so without the normal limits that I had become accustomed to.

    Love my XSR900 it’s my second bike went back and forth on getting one after watching some videos and people saying it’s not for beginner riders. But really it all comes down to throttle control and self control. I started off in b mode tcs1 for all of the first 500 miles of break in then switched to std for the remaining break in period. Once break in was done I tried A and it’s been that way ever since now with 1,776 miles.

      Thanks! Yeah I plan on getting something with a smaller engine as my first bike. I know BMW is releasing the G310R around new years. They are releasing it geared toward new riders they say. Maybe I'll go for that one.

      i'd get one ...ride it in B mode till you get used to that Mode... then in Standard ..till you get used to that one ... then in A mode at times ..... don't get too Brave though at first !!!!!.... it will bite .... just be careful till you get used to it ..!!!!! its a FAB do it all bike ....

    Where the fuck did this level of production value come from?!
    Jesus man, way to knock it out of the park! Your gear reviews are excellent and to the point, this video was stunning to watch (breath of fresh air) and you have a fantastic tone and warmth to your style of presentation...
    Fast becoming my favourite product & bike reviewer.
    I appreciate the honest conclusion but think you should have mentioned the difference in build quality compared to competitors, such as the RnineT. Which is like jewellery compared to the Casio nature of the Yamaha.
    Still, spot on mate.

    Yet another brilliant piece from FortNine. Opinionated but still objective, serious, yet amusing, and great to look at. This is one of the two or three best motorcycle channels on RUclips and better than a hell of a lot of broadcast television.

    Great production quality as always, however I disagree with your final statement. XSR900 is a pretty tame bike in B mode and as someone that came from cbr500r previously and is generally quite a relaxed rider, I do not find it intimidating or having too much power as a daily commuter. Standard or A mode are a different animal, however B mode is nice and relaxed around town.
    For me it scratches a lot of itches - it's fantastically cheap in Australia, especially when looking at second hand options. It has great power delivery, brakes, sound, and modes, etc. It's got a bit of a retro edge to it and does not look like a transformer. The biggest downside is probably suspension, but when comparing to the nearest retro inspired bike for a similar price, being Street Twin, the performance proposition is very much in Yamaha's favour

    Bloody enjoyable video to watch with some fantastic editing and a solid bike review. I'd be tempted to take something like that for a test ride, I'm also 6'3" and too tall for a lot of bikes, but the test ride roads here are usually very scripted and straight.....

  • @dr.bherrin
    @dr.bherrin Год назад +3

    I agree with this review. And also think that is exactly why you should be getting the xsr700 instead. I rode the 900, thought the same things. Then noticed they had a 700. They let me take it to the demo track, and I took it home a couple of hours later. Less horsepower, no need for riding modes, etc.
    Riding it made me wonder why the 900 exists...and then I remembered that in the US, the amount of riders that believe "POWER" is everything. It's just wasted on this bike though. The 700 hits that perfect spot.

  • @swissDragonrider

    I get your point ryan. The XSR900 struggles to fit in. But so did I most of my life. Maybe that is why this bike is so perfect for me. It fools uninformed people with it's classy (if not vintage) look. But underneath you get a great naked sportsbike. It's the understatement here that is so appealing to me. And it really rides well (except for the really bumpy roads). Anyway, great video as alway! I love that you try to do something unique with your videos.

    • @cerebralmethod9112
      @cerebralmethod9112 4 года назад +1

      There's a bit of satire there - that the helmet cafe racers wear doesn't offer sufficient protection, so it's good that cafe bikes often aren't the type that can go fast.

    Also, I must join the choir of complimets regarding production quality - impeccable. How are you finding the Icon Basehawk jacket, Ryan? The jacket and gloves looks like a perfect fit.

    • @FortNine
      @FortNine  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks! The Basehawk is amazing - it's probably my favourite jacket to ride in at the moment. My only complaint is that it desperately needs exhaust vents on the back. As it is, the Basehawk gets a bit stuffy over 30C. ~RyanF9
