“Composer Laurie Spiegel is widely known for her electronic and computer-based compositions. Her realization of Kepler’s Harmonices Mundi was launched on the Voyager spacecraft’s golden record, her interactive software has been used widely on personal computers and her albums of electronic music demonstrate her pioneering work in that field. But all along she has always played, loved and written for the guitar.
Initially playing by ear in her home town, Chicago, her studies of the instrument included folk guitar and banjo at the Old Town School of Folk Music during its very first years, classical guitar lessons with Richard Pick in Chicago, her initial composition and counterpoint studies as well as classic guitar with John W. Duarte in London, and with Oscar Ghiglia whose master class at Juilliard she performed in. Additional studies included renaissance and baroque style and continuo improvisation on lute with Fritz Rikko, also at Juilliard."
