I'm just a hobby welder who'd like to one day make part, if not all, of my living from welding. I've seen about all of Jody's videos (weldingtipsandtricks) and have learned most of the "technique" of welding from him, but have recently found fieldres's channel and saw a reply by him to a comment on one of his videos in which he praised you for your skill and knowledge. Jody's videos show how to weld - you and fieldres show how to be a welder. Much respect and appreciation to all you guys for taking the time to share your knowledge.
I bet after this project, the welder's mate will become a better welder if they put full concentration because these guys are just out of the globe in what they are doing
Best part of these videos, almost, are the noobs or trolls giving pointers that don't apply to downhill. The "you better get a guard on that grinder" or "downhill welds wont hold." Great vids man.
Very nice downhill penetration welding. 33 years ago I was a pipe welder. 6GR (my country called it). Watch and envy these professions. Especially, overhead welding, it needed years of practices.
I love Welding...never welded pipelines, but repaired heavy equipment & semi end dump & belly dump trailers. Rebuilt loader & excavator buckets & dozer blades for the past 41 years of my life. I love it...must be killer welding as a Pipeliner!!!
My dad run a dozer for Tennessee gas and for Rivers pipeline when I was eight years old. He wanted me to be a pipeline welder i started welding got my own truck and shop but started welding structural steel instead stayed busy for 30 years. Now when I watch these welders Makes me want to go back but I cringe watching the down hill root pass. I would go up with 7018. Thanks for showing this.
For pipe welding the down hill root pass method is better.....There is far less undercut on the root pass while it is easier for the welder to view the Key Hole and the positioning of the hand and arm and elbow *dropping down* feels more natural and comfortable rather than pulling up from bottom to top.........with the Heat up High , You more or less bury the rod in the gap and run a tight key hole and skate along........... If the Key hole begins to grow too large because the gap is too wide then lower the heat 5 amps to 10 amps or more to gain control of the key hole.....If the Key hole becomes to tight because the gap is too tight then up the amps by 5 or 10 amps or more to maintain that tight key hole.....when everything is just right you can hear the consistent hissing and sizzle sound. If the gap closes up way too tight then use the mini grinder with a 1 / 8 thick blade to feather out the the thickness of the land. Leave your heat setting the same but when you fire up again anticipate you may have thinned out the land a little too much and not enough meat to handle the amp setting so be ready to immediately down 5 or 10 amps .....or you may not have feathered out the land quite enough and need to up 5 amps or 10 amps or more.....On the stops and starts fire up about a 1 / 2 inch before the key hole and pull a long arc and come down on the bead a little slowly to make sure the arc is fully stabilized and then begin to press lightly into the bead and start moving the arc towards the key hole while anticipating you will break through just slightly before the key hole.....and when you see you effectively break through and begin to gently bury the rod in between the gap and then pause for a count of 1 to 2 seconds to make sure you back fill the start and stop and do not leave a lack of penetration at the stop / start *Blending* point and then begin to move and carry on with the rod buried between the gap Been there done that 1975 to 1985
These are some badass welders! You have some great shots in this video. Have my own rig cant wait until i can get on the pipeline, just have to get more experience under my belt, the only sucky part. Great job with this video, gives the newbies something to look forward to
I remember during my time in ABV rock l was in pipe line as a Tig Welder its so nice experience in my life. Even now in Europe i'n the welding QC in underground tunnel going to Switzerland big big project. Amazing project.
hehe, i work in production welding now, and at 41 it may be boring as hell, but i do not miss being out there in the elements, definitely a young mans job , i think ill stay in the climate controlled building. good video, stay safe out there lads.
I started offshore welding pipe offshore and have welded for five different major oil companies and I have come to the conclusion, and I know this is going to be up for grabs to either agree or disagree with, but I've come to the conclusion that the best way to put in a root pass for any pipe, other than heliarc , would be a downhill root pass with Mig .023 wire. after the preheat it would be fast it would be clean and if you stick the little nozzle from a 135 or 185 Hobart MIG welder up into that big gap it would be far enough away from the wind possibly to where you could use Mig , and it would be fast, it would be clean, but people are slow to change so don't look forward to it happening anytime soon but it would be a fast clean beautiful beautiful root pass without any need to knock off any flux.
Nice vid. Would've liked to see the finished cap. Any radiography, spot or full. I just got my CWI and I'm thinkig of going on the road working pipelines. Your welders did agreat job on the root pass, fun to watch. Thanks.
Good am welding heavy fabrication av just started working on some pipe but it has a 356mm boss on the end .15 beads fill .5 caps there's 100 percent ut there for a bridge I started welding wen left school I have to get re coded evrey six months av only been welding for 5 years so still learning . I have a welding engineer learning me and a old timer . Thanks for your time .
I like to see that, I am new to welding , a few month and only for my personal use, but I do see that they use 6010 (or similar) as I see the whip and bead technique. Amazed by the steady hand, not moving while closing the hood. My hood cannot do that because it is air assisted, so I had tl learn to lay the rod on the coating so no arc, then to close the mask with the other hand. That way I still can use both hands for the beginning of the rod .

I have used 8010 before, digs like a 6010, weld bead appearance is like a mixture of 7018 & 6010 with an attitude! Do like the 7010 for it semi smooth weld bead texture :P

Im in pipe school learning tig always new how to weld stick 6010 root 7018 fill and cap usually can weld just about anything even 232 inershield structural
I love the sound when that 6010 rod burns through that landing and it's all on the inside after thaT I always had to run 6010 roots uphill rather than downhill the old guys used to run 6010 root uphill and downhill with. 6010 on the filler and cap
hey man great vid! is it possible the get a vid from behind the helmet so i can see how you are manipulating your root, fill and cap. im just finishing my 3rd year and ill be going for my b ticket soon after. its nice to see how different welders weld there pipe. thanks again mike
This is great but it would have been great to see when they overlapped the original pipe, made the cut, took out the pup and then field beveled it. That is a major part of the tie in but the rest is awesome.
OK, 5/8" wall, what kind of pressure would run through that? I'm guessing 'spiral' welded pipe somewhat lower than straight welded pipe? nice video, I've seen your stuff before, 23 minutes not really that long, gives a real good idea of how much is actually involved in pipe-line work.
thats because, if the weld cracks or is in any way subpar, its welders heads that rolls, but i have to say , this joint was very nice. seems like such a gravy job to weld pipelines, compared to working rigs, sooo much space
I had a chance back in the day to be a wilder fitter on the Alaskan pipeline back in the day but I chose to stay with my girlfriend what a mistake that was I'll regret that choice the rest of my days.
I'm just curious about the communication that ya'll are doing. When you say "Up" or "Down" is that the Welder requesting that the amperage be turned up or down on the machine?
Some welders just say up or down usually meaning increments of 5. I did this shit for 37 years and would still be doing but due to screwing my back up I had to retire.
This is satisfying to see it's amazing how these welders work! I'm impressed! Respect those guys that work really hard on this job!!!!
Shout out to the pipefitters directing the welders and preparing the pipes, cuts, grinds, directing the crane operators, etc. United association of plumbers and pipefitters.
There are no pipefitters on a pipeline, they are called spacers and stabbers, everyone else is a welder or a helper.
Love the video. No fancy edits, no music, no bullshit. Just video of the work and process. 🙏🙏
This is a back breaking job. Respect for these hard working people. Hardcore test of both man and machine.

I watched this video while having a smoke break in 40 minus weather after welding 100 feet underwater for over an hour in Antarctica.
Dude thats soo awesome they dont have no underwater welders on youtube
How many amps do u think it would take for root pass and cap that whole pipe my friends

Seems legit

Funny, I worked with uphill refinery pipe welders for years and some don't even know that pipelines are welded downhill.
Guards are for sissies, lol.
I enjoy watching the pipe in the clamps being fitted. How the man signals the operators and they have to make small adjustments to get it right.
That hand sign is those with long term relationship with the job.. not for begginers..
My respects to my fellow welders getting it done .
Very nice downhill penetration welding. 33 years ago I was a pipe welder. 6GR (my country called it). Watch and envy these professions. Especially, overhead welding, it needed years of practices.

Amazing work, thank you so much for bringing this to us. Beautiful root work too!

It’s the type of rods they’re using that allows them to weld a downhill root pass. You must not know too much about welding......
Jordan Evans you’d be surprised how many people don’t know about downhill welding it’s kinda shocking lol

Great camera work. Love them running the stringers & the hot pass. If you can't put it on the pipe you can't stay! Xray welders= where the pros are.
So glad you didn’t cut out the jokes and profanities. That made me chuckle!👍
I really do enjoy watching you guys doing welding work, it inspires me to try hard with my education to have the welding class :)
