The mud was an absolute misery!!! Almost wanted to turn back home after that. Thankfully Johannes was kind enough to lift my heavy bike 3 million times in those nasty conditions. Looking forward to the next episode!
Many try this kind of vlog, but you really make it worthwhile to watch. No dull moments, no needless bs, just compressed action and adventure. I went through the pyrenees myself last month. The French mud was the hardest part. It’s gonna be great!
Pavlin from Motorcycle Adventures said a while ago, choose the bike for your worst riding conditions. I know this means some degree of discomfort on the highway but it can mean the difference between needing extra assistance and doing it solo. That's a huge highway ride to the start of your dirt adventure. I bet you're glad you were not on the 701. I'm sure you know this already, but I suggest you take an extra 2-3 days to ride back home. Enjoy the back roads, alpine passes and small villages. Ride 500 km a day instead of 1000 km and you'll enjoy it a lot more. Maybe you have to get back for other commitments, but something to consider for next trip. Cheers
Thanks Johannes for sharing this great video, I just got back a few minutes ago from a one week solo trip to the mountains on my f800gs here in the USA , and I can totally relate to this I also can not see my self doing this type of trips on a smaller bike ,unless they come on a carrier on the back of my SUV
Thanks! 😊 Sounds like a great trip, where exactly did you go? Adventure bike vs. Van with a dirt bike is an interesting debate. The more I travel the more I realize it’s the offroad I find fun, so I’m actually looking into that. If it’s a trip that covers tarmac as well the best option is easily an adventure bike like your f800.

Looks like you are having an adventure Johanne. Riding alone has it's challenges, and requires a very cautionary approach to everything. It is a good reason to reduce the weight of your T7 as much as possible. Another tip is to carry a pulley system. I have two lengths of 4mm dyneema (10m and 6m) and two pulleys that give me up to 6:1 ratio. Total weight is about 300grams for the whole system. I have not had a reason to use it on the trails and imagine recovery will still be tricky, but should get me out of trouble if the bike goes down a slope. You deserve way more viewership and subscribers than you have currently... I love the no nonsense approach you take... I hope you or your fellow riders were not injured during the trip... I honestly would look past the T7 for something like a KTM 500 kitted out for ADV. Yes the ride on highway isnt that good but there are means to avoid riding 12 hours on the highway like renting a truck or box truck and loading the bike and take it 20 hours south then return back to where I came from. But if it was for the experience then I understand. Please keep riding and posting great videos as always
Thank you very much for your kind words, I really appreciate that! You are onto something very interesting here, regarding an adventure bike vs. a van with a lighter bike inside. This is something I will make a video about when I get home from Spain, lets continue this discussion in that video. I have the 20 hours of riding back home in a couple of days and I’m dreading it, it was exhausting getting down here. Learning as I go 😊
@@JohannesDalen yes. I believe if you didn't have that 20 hours and 2 days of highway riding you may have been in much better shape for your off road excursions. However having said that we ride for making memories. Your memories of this trip will be much stronger because of the number of crashes you had and how you SURVIVED. This means if you had a lighter bike your memories will be 😕 and not so deep and unforgettable. That's why I don't think there is no CORRECT answer to the bike choice because ultimately we have x years alive and y years healthy enough to ride so make memories in any possible way with any bike you have at your disposal. Its a pleasure to watch your videos. Although it reminds me I need to ride myself more than watch 😂. Get home safe my friend and I honestly thought you were back home by now. I didn't know you had enough VIKING energy to ride 12 hours and yet edit and upload videos. That's a big time commitment. Enjoy. Be safe.
Yes but the whole reason behind the development of the ADV bike was to get a bike that does most things well, what you're suggesting is just an enduro with luggage not the reason people buy an ADV bike. There's certainly a place for that but the T7 is a great bike for it's intended market.
Brilliant report my friend! I think you stroke gold on your recording/editing technique!.... not so much on the mud riding skills, i see :P But I wouldn't expect less from Shem, his hobby is to lure naive Adv riders to muddy trails and watch them consume themselves in doubt, guilt and regret xD Enjoy the rest of your trip!
In november I’ll bring my T7 on worn e07s and let you have at it in a muddy situation, ready with my camera 😆 Yeah Shem is unique, so nice and looks harmful, but on the inside he loves pain and suffering!
I've just read your comments guys - you clearly know me better than I know myself! 😆 Diogo - I somehow recall our story very differently... it was more like "Shem come to Portugal it is always sunny and dry here..." I came, and then I'm having to put up with 4 days of heavy rain and ride a CRF with road tires on extremely muddy trails 😁. Strangely though, with the exception of the Pyrenees trip, riding in Portugal with you was one of the best motorcycle trips I have ever been on! Shame you couldn't make it to Pyrenees with us.
Great vid, nice to see a 660 there too... not many 660/700 offroad comparisons out there. I'm guessing it's not a stock T7 seat with all those road miles.
I have had my surron fall in similar way as your tenere but way more steep and also inbetween trees. Sometimes its hell of a ride to pick up 70kg bike! Hard Adv should be always done in two person atleast to help out in tough situations imo. Going to pick up my new 890 adv R tomorrow wish me luck!
Yeah, I would’ve never been able to get it out myself, much steeper than what the 360 makes it look. Congrats on the 890 r, such a nice bike! Please let me know how you like it after some use 😊
When solo and bike is "upside-down" on slope you should rotate it (grabbing front or rear) on the ground to the point where it is no longer "upside-down". In this case I would grab rear wheel/rack end rotate/spin it 180 degrees to make the bike face the opposite side (where you came from); then it should be much easier to pick it up.
Good input, we were able to flip it over the two of us. I wasn’t able to lift it at all from that position, it was much much steeper than the camera makes it seem.
also, realize that filming can’t interrupt the flow of riding. So, your fans appreciate any content you can squeeze out during your trip. It’s all bueno 😂
Hey Dom, nice to hear from you - hope all is well my friend! Yes, highway is boring and taxing on two wheels, period. I’m looking for ways to explore places far away without the need of two wheels to get there - I have a few interesting ideas in mind 😁
rope and ratchets for picking up heavy bikes in the dirt, not expensive and easy to pack and are small, you'll be blown away when you figure out how to use a ratchet and a few poles, ratchet strap/hook goes under the bike to other side of the bike peg/frame, stick the bike in gear and lock the front brake, place ratchet at about you hip or chest height then ratchet the thing up, it will lift the bike to an easier height for you to get leverage on it and then pick it up, rope come in handy for dragging the bike out of ditches. All the best with your trip.
Thanks, that’s a great tip. I will definitely look into this and carry a rope with me on the next adventure. If it weren’t the two of us my T7 would be there still.
Looks like a real adventure, great scenery, and glad you enjoyed the route down 👍👍 did you avoid many tolls and make good progress around Paris? I’m not so keen on the mud either, and lifting an upside down bike, when you can’t get good foot hold and leverage…….. good advise to ride with a friend or three 👍
Nice, hope your m8 it's ok. I understand that's a big road trip, but the TET with those tyres in the spring, with a heavy loaded bike... It could get a bit frustrating instead a lots of fun, i hope it was the fun.
Thanks Mario, he’s okay besides the broken foot. Yes I went with the wrong tires for sure, should have swapped them out after riding through Europe on them. But, for everything else than the mud and wet grass, they worked really well. It was much more fun than it was frustrating 😁
Wow…that a huge distance to cover in a few days! But you should not knock your T 7 because of the weight off-road.I am 190 cm and with camping gear on my crf 300 I thought 520 km was enough for the day here in Spain.I could not be longer than the 8,5 hours in the saddle so well done 😊Have a great TET week!
The more experience I get the more I realize that anything more than 3-5 hours on the highway is a chore, on any bike. Should have split it up into more days or taken a b road, but that would have added several days at both ends of this trip. I have a few solutions to this in mind, we’ll see what the future holds 😊 Thank you Robert!
Another fun adventure that I am enjoying following along. I love that you keep just getting out there, exploring, and learning as you go. It’s inspiring. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the journey. I also think this video helped me finally make a decision on the upgrade bike too for some reason. We just finished remodeling our garage and I clearly only have room for one bike, so I had to let go of the ADV + enduro idea. 🥲 I need one bike I can do lots of things on and get a foot or two down in an emergency relatively comfortably. Seeing the challenges you guys faced helped me put my options in perspective, so thanks for sharing the realities of what comes with riding ADV bikes on trails with such honesty.
Hi Johannes, Bike downway`s in a Ditch, Tree in Front, tired - who will pick this big Bike up alone??? German Highway`s is great for the T7 and other Bikes in this Class. Offroad on my DR350 with 138Kg ... I love it! Highway on long stretches with 130-140km/h - not so funny :-) Glad your ok and have many more Impressions ... Best Regards min venn, Alfred
Really like your videos! I’m looking at selling my KTM 500 & KTM 890 R to get one back country/off road bike like the Husqvarna 701. Your videos are a great help since I have some of the same issues you discuss in these videos. Have you put a new vent hose hose on your tank with a check valve? Nice option for less than $10.
Appreciate that Jeff 🙂 Have you seen the video I posted today? I share my thoughts about an "issue" I had on this trip to the Pyrenees. Regarding a vent hose with a valve - I have ordered one, didn't know they existed till a viewer recommended me one a few days ago - thanks!
Hehe, det hjelper å ha vært aktiv løfter i noen år 😁 Ja, dekkene var en bom, men ellers er jeg veldig fornøyd med de. Del to kommer om tre-fire dager 😁
Good question actually, the hose that came with the tank always came off, and I’ve removed the charchoal canister. This small thing keeps rain from getting into the tank.
@@JohannesDalen i also know about canister and remove them but you need to put a fuel vent cap on your hose which is cheap like we all have on the enduro bikes. Dirt does not get into your tank when you ride in the dust and because there is a steel ball inside it will stop the gas from leaking when the bike is on its side. It cost 10 bucks. Something like this: ruclips.net/video/CQyMhrB-qiI/видео.html
I've watched you ride the T7, over and over, and tried to convince myself that it's a reasonable assumption that I could also handle the weight.....at 54. I saw reason, a few weeks ago, and bought a KTM EXC-F 500 six days France. After looking at this video, I think I may have dodged a bullet with the T7. Lovely bike but too much for me. 106 kilos seems to be a lot more manageable, in my books.
The T7 is great, but it can quickly become very heavy in certain situations. If I didn’t have long and strong legs, I’d be falling ten times everyday on this trip. I think a 500 is a better choice if you have trails nearby or a trailer 😊
And thank you for following along 😊 Let me know how the 500 works out for you. I’m thinking about putting a bigger tank on my 350 and take it for an adventure or two - the exc/fe is such a great platform!
I'm now considering the KTM EXC-F 500 as an adventure platform to replace my CRF. How do you find the vibration levels on yours? Did you make any modifications to handlebar mounts?
@@Shem Hey, Shem. I'm sorry, but I can't offer any feedback to you. I bought the 500 six weeks ago, and it's sat in my spare room with a sheet over it, ever since. I still need to fit heavier springs, which i've purchased, but not installed yet. I have a six days, so it already has some 'better' parts added. I'm only planning on some light adventure and some enduro racing on mine, so my opinion wouldn't be of much use to you, in any case. I wish you well with your decision. All the best!
I will by him a var where he canset his motorcycle. Iam afraid for him when he droves that far and get exhauted! With a car he can stop wherever he wants! And take a sleepingrest

Härlig resa😊👍
No sauna at the campsite?..
Right after dropping a heavy bike off-road and potentially stuck is the perfect time to ask yourself ‘am I having fun?’ 😊
Haha right? It’s a strange kind of fun when that happens at the end of the day in 25 degrees 😬
I missed my 350 at 110kg I can tell you that 😁
Hope all is well with you too Alfred 😊
Del to kommer om tre-fire dager 😁
Time for Eastbound motowinch
just a hose on the gas cap, why?
Good question actually, the hose that came with the tank always came off, and I’ve removed the charchoal canister. This small thing keeps rain from getting into the tank.
@@JohannesDalen i also know about canister and remove them but you need to put a fuel vent cap on your hose which is cheap like we all have on the enduro bikes. Dirt does not get into your tank when you ride in the dust and because there is a steel ball inside it will stop the gas from leaking when the bike is on its side. It cost 10 bucks.

Man that is genius, perfect. Thanks for the tip!
Great vid Viking, the princess is starting to harden up. 😂😂😂😂
@@JohannesDalen Thanks for your amazing videos. As much as i'd love a T7, you've shown me that i'm dreaming. I'll watch you ride one, instead!
Now if only I could pick up a bike like you did off Shem, with one hand, I'd be a lot more confident off road.... :0)
It helps, but my confidence got a serious dent when I couldn’t lift it up if the ditch myself 😅
Haha, exactly this was a little embarrassing! I'm lying there trapped and helpless and there come Johannes and picks it up with one hand!😅
Lucky you weren't on a GS for the mud 😂
It would have been interesting to say the least 😬
Mistake number one was not passing Paris before stopping for the night. 🙂
Hehe exactly! Didn’t helo that my GPS failed me mid-Paris either after sending me to the center 😅
Just over a month to go. Stay safe FFS!
Hehe, I’m safe for now, but considering taking my FE instead of the T7 for our trip 😅
Ok, cheating, but that's allright. 🙂
Less than half of the weight of Emma 😅
I ment a car, not a var( whatever that is)
I will by him a var where he canset his motorcycle. Iam afraid for him when he droves that far and get exhauted! With a car he can stop wherever he wants! And take a sleepingrest
You have gone through so many days too quickly You could do at least 2 or 3 episodes
I would like you to insist on the camping, cooking, interaction with people side
Great video and scenery
140 km in a T-7 and vibre???
Nottt
Change place of the bags..
its pi-ren-neez not pie ren neese
Thanks for the video. More riding, less vlogging on these trip videos would be nice.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching 😊 I agree, more riding
