- There are several switches on a modern bike that prevents it from starting. The clutch switch is one of them. I tell you why you should not bypass it, what it does and how to change it.

I love the fact that the first tools to be hung on the tool board are BIG hammers 🙂
Hello,
For the first Video i have to say - Good Image, Good Light, Good Audio.... very good :)
Thanks man
Interesting stuff Robert...the more you know about your bike the better!! That was quite a price difference 😳 Cheers, Steve
Thanks Nomad. Helpful practical stuff every now and then. Also thanks for the suspension settings video, I did as recommended and think It improved the ride¡ Cheers from Madrid.
Thanks!
A considerable price difference for such a small part. Thanks for sharing, Robert. Cheerio, Günter/Nürnberg
Thanks for the heads up on this Robert. You should create a Wish List on Amazon (or other) so we can buy you tools in appreciation. Does not look like you have many!
Thanks. Well I haven't started using Amazon much yet because I don't get things there. (Not so big in Sweden yet). But I will check it out.
Many thanks Robert. I think I have the same problem. You're right, I really need it to work off road. I just came back from a trip and it was tricky on a hill climb having to hit neutral to restart the bike.
Yes that is a pain indeed 👍🏻
@@NomadSweden Just had a look. Switch was kinda stuck. Sprayed some silicone grease and worked it in and out. Working again. 👍🏽
@peterho1470 awesome. Now get out and ride again 😊
Great contents as always Robert, also your new man cave is looking awesome. All the best from Cornwall in the UK
Cheers!
I am very envious of your new bike / man cave! Awesome. BTW, I followed your lead earlier on the mirror upgrade (from Rally Motor NL) and it has totally eliminated the buffeting I suffered with my AURORA rally tower and screen (790Adv R).
Best from ‘downunder’ 🍺 🍔
Ah great news! Thanks
Outstanding video! Learning so much from your channel. Cool garage by the way!
Thanks man 🙏
Robert please stop the upgrades T700 videos its costing me a fortune😊 Nah all good cheers from Australia love your work thankyou
Thanks mate for the info. Can't wait to get my T7 out of dealer storage. Then the agonizing decision to sell the GSA.
Yeah the GSA is a nice bike 😊
@NomadSweden it's nice but 10 years is enough
Thanks from a fellow tenere owner. It’s the little things…👍🏻
I had the same issue with my GS's and my old Tenere.
Years ago with my XTZ660 1996 model, once with a 2004 GS model and once now with my 2014 LC. On this model, it is impossible to change the drive modes on the go by clutching, when the switch is defekt. I had to pay 85€ at the BMW dealership because I was abroad on my summer vacation.I knew it before but I thought it would not be a big issue. Wrong!Every board crossing, every stalling in traffic with a fully loaded bike, and every weather condition change, was there to remind me that I have to fix this as soon as possible before my journey back home.
Tack Robbert, keep om going with this useful information. Love your garage!, But yes, part of the ideal conditions to be born in lovely Sweden. Enjoy.
😊 thanks
Good info Rob !
Oh Robert you are soo clever... But for me is the side-stand as well importent. Thanks anyway.
Ive had a issue with mine for a little while. I knew there was a problem so i had a look. I took mine off and cleaned it, as he said a light came on the edu. I found that on mine the little plate behind the lever was dirty, i cleaned it and it looks ok hopefully. I took a quote from a main dealer, i was gobsmacked when he told me the price, i thought it was made out of gold. So people who has the problem shop around and don't get ripped off.
XT-660Z part? ...Older brother donated its parts to the younger brother! It brings tears to my eyes. 😋
Haha yes indeed.
That's great to know Robert. I buy a lot of parts from Off the Road. That and the side stand switch are two parts one needs to always carry. My friends on KTM were stranded on the Bolivian salt flats for a week because of their sidestand switch. It was a big issue for them not so much on the T700. Now I have in hand a quick shift for the street version CP2 engine I believe MT7 something like that. Have you experienced anyone putting it on a T700. I haven't tried it yet myself. It works up but not down. I wonder if the CPU is compatible. Take care. Dry trails to you
Thanks. I heard people use the quick shift for mt07. It should work in my opinion but not confirmed
Very clearly said. Thanks👍
Great information!
I think it would be wise to carry a set of switches with one out to the middle of the no where world. (East Kentucky, USA). OTR is a great site. I bought a lot of items for mine. They did great on my Ohlins F/R suspension. Others missed the mark. I've had friends stuck for days on the salt flats unable to get their KTM's to start because of salt in the side stand switch with hardly anyway to bypass it. Not good. Thanks Robert. Glad that wasn't too much for you to handle. HAHA
Haha thanks
@@NomadSweden watching the end of Dakar now.
Top explanation of what was happen. Why a bypass at the sidestand. And why not for the clutch lever.
Irregular I do watch your channel. I really like that you are authentic.
As an simple example I remember that you change the wheels ballbearings.
The reason was you told us that you clean your bike with the water brush too close.
A lesson for me. I know that too ! But the reality is ...
And you put from time to time nice jokes in.
Right from the very first time I see your channel,
Hello adventure riders ...
In the next scene ...
Good morning internet, it is ...
And your body language say no.
TOP !
It is very good that you find in time a new shed.
With 230V and heating for NOMAD.
Thank you for your information, entertainment and press on.
Thanks 🙏
Love the new workshop/garage. BTW, who makes that blue scissor jack? I’ve been looking for a heavy duty one for my T7. Thanks and keep up the great content.
This is the jack I use www.biltema.se/bil---mc/mc/verkstadsutrustning/mc-lyftar/mc-lyft-680-kg-2000021674
Good information. Loved your "Forrest gump imitation" :)
Haha thanks for noticing
That's right Robert, if you don't know for sure what you're doing - don't do it!
Good to know ;)
Great video.
What are the tiers you have on the bike now ?
Michelin Tracker
Same Problem here in a GS 1200 in the middle of Italy TET 😱 I found one in a BMW Dealer Garage for : 120,- back in Germany i found out 34 .- oh man next Trip i got one with me 👍
My z125 had the clutch switch disconnected from the clutch perch However it still started in gear when i held the clutch in, i changed the levers and after 3 rides the bike didnt turn on in gear anymore only starts in neutral and I really prefer holding the clutch in and starting the bike to take off easy any idea what happened?
3:28 so I didn't really get, what is that huge problem to bypass this switch on modern bikes after all?
I guess it's a diferente mapping for it (fuel/air ratio)
Where did you find the information that the clutch switch is a player in the ignition maps? Can you share the source? I removed the switch and I'm not so convinced that is the case. Thanks!
Multiple sources but this is one ruclips.net/video/A6ZTcVukxy8/видео.html
The Eco mode did it work when it was broken? I have a similar problem
It worked ok but not optimal
@@NomadSweden i think a have the same problem. P0500 error. No abs and no eco mode. It could be the switch or a badly connected plug 😒😵💫
in my xtz 750 is all cable need to change i thing is one of my problem that need to change. i start the engine with clutch inside press and without gear and wheh i let the clutch engine stop..then if i have the stand off not stop..
Hi Nomads. Just saw your informative & funny TET and northern Sweden vídeos to great music. From your TET adventure what advice would you give for a 12000 km journey around southern Europe and north African countries on a BMW F750 GS? Danke!
Hi, not sure what to suggest but to just ride and have the documents in order. Perhaps this video helps? ruclips.net/video/B5--0Cpn-YM/видео.html
What clutch lever are you using please?
And did they interfere with the hand guard?
Works very well, no interference. www.off-the-road.de/en/tenere-700/handlebars-more/116604/brake-clutch-lever-set-foldable-and-length-adjustable-yamaha-tenere-700
I had same problem w same switch on my tenere!! In my case was just dirty! 😜wd40 and was working again
👍🏻👍🏻
A great video, thank you.
thank's guy very interresting!!!!
Hi Robert, I have a question. My 2019 T7 starts on the 1st gear, without needing to pull the clutch. I thought the switch was broken and I replaced it but the problem is still there. When I checked both clutch switches, they both work identically with a multimeter. Do you think the issue is with ecu?
Strange i would thinkbthe clutch switch. But if it wasn’t i do not know sorry
@@NomadSweden Thank you for your reply, I wonder what the issue is.
NomadSweden have you tried spraying contact cleaner on the switch? BTW very useful tip, I'll give it a try with WD40 just in case and if it fails I'm gonna buy an aftermarket replacement.
Thanks no actually I did not try fixing the old. Could have saved me some money 😊
thanks bud
Mine broke I bypassed it and have never noticed a difference at all both on and off-road.
Hmm 🤔, interesting. Good to know.
I smashed the like button
Thanks man
Subbed
I bypassed mine, it lost power and had a low rev limit untill i realised what it was causeing it, i now just leave it unplugged because the screw that holds the switch on broke off.
I had one of my switch wire got pulled out when i was adjusting my clutch. My revs always went higher than usual when i pull my clutch. Tried to adjust my throttle wire, clutch and to no avail. When i finally saw what happened, i put the wire back in and walla! bike runs fine again lol.
There you go :D
👍👍👍
Yes those safety devices are annoying most of the time but even an experienced ryder can make a mistake (the side stand) on a long trip, after all day riding. Cheers.
And I've heard such jokes that only Poles want to know their motorbikes that way ;-)
A motorbike is a companion on a journey. It is good to know its capabilities, needs - also the technical ones.
You can use the old switch as a spare.
Repair it with some contact spray of WD40. It is only a small micro switch.
Thanks!
Not really arguing with you but I do not see how clutch movement can tell the ECU what gear the transmission is in.
No, I mean if you bypass the switch the ECU will think you are in constant neutral, even if you have a gear in. You will get the neutral-mapping always. This will give you a worse fuel flow and timing when riding.
@@NomadSweden I understand what you are saying. What I am saying is how does a clutch tell you what gear you are in? Even neutral. Gear position is from the transmission. When your switch was defective did the correct gear number still show on the dash display?
I try again :)
If you are in 2nd gear (no clutch) bike will have mapping for 2nd gear.
If you are in 2nd gear plus "clutch in", it will use mapping for "clutch in" or neutral mapping.
It has nothing to do with gears. As soon as you pull in the clutch, it will use the "clutch in" mapping, regardless of which gear you are in because the engine in free revving.
Bypassing the switch, will use "free revving" mapping, regardless of gear.
@@NomadSweden I understand what you are saying. If the 'clutch in' overrides gear mapping how does the engine ever know what gear you are in? The transmission tells the ECU what gear it is in. The ECU also relates that information to the dash display so it knows what gear you are in regardless of clutch position. When you pull the clutch in does the display change to 'N'. No, it doesn't. The ECU does notice if there is a fuel demand and what revs the engine is, that is what controls the mapping and is why the mapping changes, not clutch position. BTW who told you about the clutch switch?
@@NomadSweden To explain another way here is what happens when you push 'start'. ECU: Is clutch disengaged? Yes = start, if NO then check if trans in neutral. If YES then Start, if NO then don't start. From that point on the ECU fuel mapping is controlled by the atmospheric conditions and engine demands.
