It is misleading...except, I think the answer is: you get in by applying. I think it is trying to encourage students to APPLY, because you can't get in without applying.
It is misleading, but I think unintentionally so. I think by "how I" they meant "the moment I" got in. Basically it is "how" they first came in contact with getting into MIT.
I'll answer it. I got in by doing what I loved and proactively seeking out opportunities. Sure you need to have good grades, but everyone knows that isn't enough. The key is to show you are the best at what you do... whether that be writing or robotics. Pure effort and dedication most certainly comes through in the application, particularly because of the additional portfolios they provide. Do what you love and be the best at it you can possibly be.
It's because they don't really know. The only way to know is to be in the room with the admissions team that makes that decision. If Harvard is any model, then I'm sure you would be shocked to discover how subjective it really is. Hopefully, MIT doesn't follow that model.
That last statement was absolutely on point. Going to a great school is not about getting a good education, because these days you can get a good education from home or your local public university. At a school like MIT you have access to world renowned professors, leaders in their fields, and an awesome group of colleagues to spend 4 years with.
I got in with only 1320 SAT (740 math 580 verbal it was called at the time), 3.8 GPA (top 10% but not valedictorian), small town no-name public school, white male, hardly any extracurriculars, no sports, BUT I did get an 'A' at a local university where I took Calculus my senior year, and an 'A' at Harvard Summer School my junior year for intro to computer science. I think that helped (showed I was prepared for college level material), plus I had started a computer supplies and repair business that was doing pretty well. They were and maybe still are really big on entrepreneurship (most my friends from there have gone on to create multiple major startups). Just shows you don't have to be an absolute genius to get in, they're looking for people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. BUT be prepared to work hard/play hard. Fast classes (few people ever have questions, they just understand everything) and 4-6 hours of homework every weeknight. It's intense but wow the prestige it carries on your resume. I got job offers at every job I ever applied to.

My MIT acceptance seemed to be dependent on what the review board believed i would be bringing to MIT. I achieved an overall 1587 on the SAT and submitted what i consider one of my top 2 essays ever written in my life. However, the interview is what got me in. I excel in astrophysics and took a model and my published work of my theory on higher life as it pertains to the continued development of the multiverse in relation to supermassive black holes and beyond. It's my theory which requires a very open mind but the review board was very impressed and needless to say is what got me in. Remember originality, creativity, and intelligence will get you in guys.
How do you know it’s the interview that got you in? Did MIT Admissions tell you? As far as MIT Admissions tells everyone, they do a holistic review of everyone’s applications, meaning that no one will be accepted just because of an individual thing. It’s great you published a theory, but I just wanted to stress holistic admissions here, and that you and no one else can really know why you were accepted.
@@amritasingh5779 Unfortunately I did not end up getting into any of my dream schools, right now I am an undergraduate at NYIT, but I still have hopes to study at MIT someday 😁
The problem with MIT admissions... isn't the low acceptance rate, it's the fact that almost everyone who applies deserves to go there and is fully capable of getting in. It's completely out of your hands whether the cookie crumbles in your favour or not.
The key is to demonstrate “intellectual maturity”. Do things on your free time that show that you are passionate about learning. Yes you need to have very good to great grades and test scores but those in themselves won’t get you in. Lastly, in order to prove that you are who you are, you need good recommendation letters. So plan on finding projects where you can be mentored so that that person can champion you.
