    ▬ In this video ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I go though previously unpublished admission statistics for international students. We reconstructed these number from old blog posts in MIT's archive. Afterwards, I talk about ways to maximize your chances of getting admitted into MIT. Next up, I have a discussion with successfully admitted international students from Europe (Albania), Latin America (Mexico), and Asia (India).

Ich möchte im IT Bereich dort meinen Bachelor machen. Kann ich mich für einen Master dort anmelden, wo der Bachelor mittendrin gemacht wird? When talking about Olympiads like IPhO, IMO, IOI and IChO I think it is very important to mention how elite these competitions really are. For the IMO, only 6 students from the entire country get selected through a multi-stage rigorous selection process. It's not the type of thing you can just be like "Oh I'm 16 now, I want to go to MIT, I'll just go and do the IMO." Really for these competitions you have to have experience with the subject from a very young age. (I think IPhO and IChO might be a bit easier but by no means "easy").
A much more achievable goal would be to do well in your country's national Olympiad. (Speaking about the UK in maths), around 1500 people (mostly aged 16-18) take part in the British Maths Olympiad Round 1 and around 120 in Round 2. Both of these contribute to selection for the IMO team but there are elite camps held in Oxford, Hungary (training with the Hungarian team) and Cambridge with 20 or so people which are used for selecting teams for a multitude of international competitions like the Balkan maths Olympiad, Romiania master of mathematics, European maths Olympiad for girls and a few more (the Cambridge camp is the most important).
Those types of goals are much more attainable for someone to start to learn later in life because really to have a chance in this type of stuff, you need experience over a very long time. (The same is true for chess)
Most importantly knowing Olympiad kids, their mindset isn't "I am doing this just to go to MIT (or whatever top university)." Instead they just really enjoy the subject and are extremely talented so just so happen to get into top universities. If the only reason to do Olympiads is to get into a top university, then it isn't really worth it. You have to enjoy it too.

I'm quite envious of these opportunities people have at a young age, I went to an extremely poor school that did not care about academics at all; the work was not rigorous and I found every class boring/infantile which led me to develop a great apathy towards academic work. There was no place for me, nor any recommendations from teachers for how I could challenge myself-I was not even conscious of the fact that I could download pdfs online and learn on my own. But I suppose the past is the past and there is no use regretting it, I'll simply keep taking solid steps forward in the direction I want to go, to become the person I aim to be.

I was privileged enough to have participated and competed at the 39th one in Russia at only 11-year-old (the youngest at that time). I mentioned it on my uni application. Definitely one of the ACTUALLY useful videos out there for international students. Great job! However, you mentioned that you don't need to be a genius, just regularly smart. Of course, there isn't a strict definition for 'genius' or 'smart', but I'm almost certain that you, and the people in this video aren't just 'regularly smart'. Sure, maybe not geniuses, but way above regularly smart. It takes a lot of innate talent and skill to make it to the International Olympiads, I don't think it's something that anyone who's 'regularly smart' can achieve, even with a lot of hard work (please correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't done Olympiad prep so far). Please don't think I'm Criticising you, I loved this video, it's probably the best out there, but I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the significance of talent for Olympiads and the like, I'm quite curious about this!

    • @SamuelBoschMIT

Thank you for your comment :)
I think this also depends on which country you're from. If you're trying to get into team India or team China, then you do have to be a genius. Simply because qualifying there is as hard as winning a gold medal.
But for most other countries, it's more a question of hard work (and resources available to you) than actual intelligence. I know many many people who went to the IPhO, and I know many of them well enough to estimate how naturally gifted they are. And surely, all of them are above average intelligent. Probably even in the top 5-10%. But that's about it. They just worked like crazy :)

Hey Sam, I just stumbled upon your channel since it was recommended to me. Your information matches with what I’ve heard from other people. I just applied to MIT (I am from USA/domestic) and yeah I medaled at one of the international science olympiads/represented team USA this past year so hoping to get in as class of 2027!!! I also published a research paper by myself which happened to be huge for my field so I submitted that as part of my portfolio!
I highly disagree with building up everything just to apply to college. The mindset almost all top olympiad kids have is just we do everything for fun :D Many medalists and campers I know do olympiads purely for fun, and everyone studies hard because it’s something they are truly passionate about and not because they want to get into Harvard or MIT or any other college.
If you are good at what you do, you will automatically be recognized and offered admission to top colleges :)

Totally vouch for the sports tip! I’m an international student from the UK who just got admitted to MIT’s class of 2026 and while of course the rest of your application, academics and character is important, I think it might have been the extra push from the coach that made my application stand out! If it’s an option available to you, definitely give it a shot!
Also, while a lot of the fellow admits I’ve met did participate in Olympiads, it’s by no means a requirement. I think a more general tip is to pursue what interests you to a really high degree - if that happens to be mathematics, physics or informatics, then the Olympiad is a good bet. However, if you’re an international applicant reading this, don’t be disheartened if you don’t have Olympiad experience.

Yeah, thank you so much for this comment and congratulations for getting admitted to MIT! Yeah, I completely agree. This has been probably the most (and only) helpful video for prospective international students. As a Pakistani, I do consider myself among relatively smart students (good grades and standardised test scores - type 1 as you mentioned) but unfortunately I didn’t know of Olympiads until my junior year started. I do have applied to a very selective summer program though, and with some more extra-academic exposure I might just get in (probably not - thoughts and prayers needed). With that said, thanks a lot for this video; I am glad I came across this!

Hey Ammar, thank you for your comment. I really appreciate it! Btw, this is the first time someone has published admissions stats for internationals at MIT. I reconstructed this chart based on old blog posts that I found, and info that I heard on campus
I also only found out about olympiads and competitions quite late but, with a lot of motivation, you can still catch up reasonable well. Even if you don't make it to the IPhO, you still stand (relatively) good chances with other extracurricular activities. And also, MIT isn't the only good school. And the bachelor's degree isn't the only opportunity you will ever get to go to MIT.
But either way, I wish you best of luck with your application. Would be really awesome if you managed to get admitted to MIT or any other university you like 🙂

AFAIK, the appropriate Admissions Officer for Olympiads (yes, there is one assigned and there has been one for the last two decades) has said things like (compiled from quora, College Confidential, talking with the Admissions Office, being an interviewer):
They have rejected as many or more IMO gold medalists as they could accept,
Yes, they are aware of the difficulty and the level of ability of those who have been in the International Science Olympiads,
YES, they recruit from the ISOs assuming you do well (and the Admissions Officer travels to the olympiad when possible).
No, they don't value medals in and of themselves -- this is one way of many to demonstrate you are world-class.
Applicants definitely need to demonstrate great academics (there was one American IMO two-time gold medalist who is not at MIT, although he is doing fine as evidenced by his pretty great Putnam results)
Applicants should think about how they would contribute to the community and how they can demonstrate that.
I've compiled a lot of countries over the last few years, so here goes:
      qr.ae/pGUMQe (Bangladesh)
      qr.ae/pGUgwN (Pakistan)
      qr.ae/pGqeyC (Indonesia)
      qr.ae/pGmNlq (Brazil)
      qr.ae/pv2J9M (Canada)
      qr.ae/pv2JeT (Canada)
      qr.ae/pv2JeU (Canada)
(and I know of Thomas Guo, I wrote about him a bunch of times)
I'm sure I've profiled other countries, but I am forgetting :)
FYI, I was NOT an International Science Olympiad medalist at MIT (where I was an international student as an undergrad). I did have a lot of other things going on though (was national-level in Canada for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics; did USAMO, Canadian Mathematics Olympiad, 2x AIME; captain of first-place team for UBC Physics Olympics after I was admitted; president and founder of sci-fi/fantasy club; multiple musical groups, provincial semi-finalist for French horn concerto competition; 4.0 unweighted GPA [top 2%] in an academically oriented high school, had all A+ in STEM, could have graduated a year early and still gotten into good schools like UBC, a bunch of other things going on ... but I was from a different generation).

    • @SamuelBoschMIT

Hey Leonhxrd, here is a bonus loophole just for you, as one of my favorite subscribers 😉
Harvard university! As a Harvard student, you can take as many classes at MIT as you want. Many of my friends really wanted to study CS at MIT, but couldn't get admitted (not sure if they even offer master's degrees in CS at MIT). So they got admitted to a Harvard CS program. It's not that Harvard alone wouldn't be good enough (obviously), but they also wanted to get MIT experience, so they're talking half of their classes at MIT.
You could maybe do the same with a masters degree at Harvard in Math, and then simply take any classes you want at MIT.
I'm gonna do things in the opposite direction. I'm doing my PhD at MIT in CS, but I'm gonna take business classes at the Harvard Business School next year. I hope this helps 🙂

@@SamuelBoschMIT Hey Samuel, that’s another great loophole, thank you very much ^^
By the way, I also noticed the loophole from the video for European top-universities. For example Cambridge Part III (so their mathematics Masters) has had offer rates of up to 50% in the last years (I think this numbers is also accurate for international students, or at least for students from the EU), so the chances to get an offer are quite good if you have very good undergraduate grades (one needs a First in the UK grading system, which, according to Cambridge, is equivalent to 1.5 or better in German grading, to apply there). :)

Hello Samuel my name is yonas and I am from Ethiopia. my highschool isn’t that well known but I have a perfect gpa and 1550 SAT score. I am also the valedictorian of my high school. I also have some amazing extracurricular activities. I want to apply to mit on November. Most students who get into such prestigious colleges are from some well known and respected schools. My high school isn’t that known even has no search result, website and page if admissions officers search it in order to get context of how rigorous the curriculum I have taken is. All this is because It is a relatively new highschool and schools in Ethiopia have relatively lower international connection as schools abroad. our counselor told me that only 3 students applied to US colleges from out highschool last year. I’m concerned because while looking at what MIT considers for admission I saw the rigor of secondary school is an important factor. But even if the school isn’t that well known, we still take the same classes as the other top high schools in the nation since academic curriculums are the same every where in Ethiopia and they are offered by the ministry of education. So will this affect my application negatively? Please I would like to get an answer cause I’m am getting concerned a lot. Thank you for your support.

Hey Siddhant, thank you for your comment - I really appreciate it 😊
It's definitely a great idea to work towards such a goal. First of all, I wouldn't advise you to focus so much on just one single institution, such as MIT. Caltech, Stanford, Harvard, CMU, Yale, and other institutions are more ore less just as good, so applying to all of these will significantly boost your chances
I do have a high-level video about my PhD research, in case you haven't watched it yet? It's called "quantum artificial intelligence", and you can find it on my channel.
I don't really know anything about the summer research scholar program, but there are a few things I have to say here. If you get to MIT in ANY form (even if it's just for a summer program), this will give you access to all of the people here, and once they get to know you personally, this will probably 10-100x your chances of getting admitted. I've seen this so many time - people come for one exchange semester, and then they get admitted to MIT for their PhD or something like that, simply because someone already know them 🙂
I hope this helps, and I wish you best of luck!!!

    Servus Samuel,
-Guinness World Record halter fürs schnellstes tippen aufm Handy

Hey Linus, wirklich sehr beeindruckend!

Hey sam I’m from Denmark and I just wanted to know if the fact that my high school doesn’t offer AP-classes will hurt my admission chances?
PS: My school does offer A-level classes such as Danish litterateur, Math, Physics, Bio etc.

    • @SamuelBoschMIT
      @SamuelBoschMIT  2 года назад +3

Heyyyy, great to hear that there are also people from Denmark watching :)
To be completely honest, I'm not sure. AP-classes seem to be an American thing. I've never heard about that elsewhere. So I suppose many international applicants won't have them either, and they manage to get admitted despite this.
Also, in recent years, schools have started putting more and more effort into getting students admitted from low-income areas, where schools typically don't offer AP classes. Therefore, they are even specifically looking for smart people coming from schools that don't offer AP classes. Obviously, Denmark isn't a low-income country, but they might value it nevertheless if you're performing very well, despite not having AP classes. Just some thoughts.
      I hope this helps 🙂

Hi, MIT '26 here. Idk how it is for international students, but at least for domestic students, they look at your application respective to your school and environment. How well you used the resources AVAILABLE to you. As long as you made an effort to take rigorous courses at your school (doesn't have to be AP), you should be fine.

    • @SamuelBoschMIT
      @SamuelBoschMIT  2 года назад

@@mattsmith2924 Yeah, I agree. I should have probably mentioned this in the video. Although MIT is not really doing a great job at this, just judging by the privileged and wealthy backgrounds of most admitted students (sadly).
And for internationals it's even harder to estimate what resources were available to someone - but luckily, that's what the essays are for

Actually, I had graduated the last year 2021, I got excellent results and fortunetaly i'm still minor. But I took myself quite late to start the admission procedures. Do you think that its enough or does it exists any possiblities to get admitted the next year at my dream university, the MIT ?

I think it's totally ok to start a year later. You should definitely apply. I do advise you not to make the same mistake as I, and focus too much on just MIT. There are so many really excellent universities in the US, that will all give you a huge career boost: Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, Yale, CMU, Columbia, UPenn, and many many more
I wish you best of luck 🙂

for competitions, is there any other competitions you would recommend that would also stand out in applications but are not as hard to even be eligible to compete like the IMO IPhO or so?. I am particularly interested in physics and astronomy. thx

    • @SamuelBoschMIT
      @SamuelBoschMIT  2 года назад +4

That's a great question. it really strongly depends where you're from. In my home country (Croatia) we had a lot of local (state) competitions which are worth a lot too. In the US (and surely also in many other countries) there exist many experimental or project competitions, where you work on such things. Your best approach is likely asking people around you + googleing a bit for your country until you find something.
But even if you cannot find any competitions that are good for you, there are other ways to stand out. As I said, doing research is also really great! You might just have to bug a lot of people until someone lets you work with them (I went through the same process, until I eventually succeeded 😁)

Great video. I am also participating in math olympiads, I suspect I will make the national team next year and bag a medal (after that I would still have one year left.) Lets assume in the dream scenario I win a gold medal, how much do you think that would help when applying to graduate school, at for example MIT. I also think graduate school is more realistic if you are not from a wealthy family, getting to undergraduate seems a little bit unrealistic to me.

Everything you did is truly amazing and very impressive.
There is just one additional piece of advice I have for you: don't mention anything religious in your application essays (or anywhere else). If the wrong person reads your essays and sees something such as "by ALMIGHTY's grace" or "Lover of Allah", it might just bias them. Obviously, MIT has complete religious freedom. But humans are humans, so be careful :)

Hey Raphael, yes it surely is an advantage. Especially in countries that are very competitive. But even in a smaller country, it counts quite a lot.
