Well just realized I've been start mine wrong for about 2 years, I never bothered with the bottom 2 except once when it started on half choke and I thought that sound meant I broke it. I've been starting it by putting on idle with the brake off and just pulling until it start a little and gassing it lol. It's not easy to do it that way, not at all when it's cold.
@@shapesquisher9887 I mean sure it's a lot easier to start it this way but apparently it's also possible just to start yanking the cord until it starts. It used to take 5-10 mins of non stop yanking until it started or I gave up in exhaustion, I just assumed it was fucked up.
I’m sure this thing called INSTRUCTIONS came somewhere in the box with the chainsaw. But in order to read / comprehend instructions you have to get past 2nd grade. 🤣
What the hell man. I have never watched a better instructional video in my life. I just bought the MS 170 and you explained everything to me so perfectly. Can you do a video for when it's time to replace the chain and tips for keeping it running well and long term storage?
Well, this is the second time I've watched this video. I'm having to start it holding it between my knees because my size 15EEE shoes won't fit in that trigger hole. I have pulled, and pulled and pulled more and mine, which started fine at ACE won't even attempt to fire off. At this rate, if it ever does start I'll be too tired from cranking it to actually use the blasted thing. Guess I'll go out and try again. Edit: After following the procedure again and getting nothing I took it back to ACE and the guy started it on the first pull. He said I most likely had flooded it by cranking too many times with the full choke on. He said in future that even if I don't actually hear it fire to take it to half choke after three pulls. Got it home and as it had just been running 15 minutes before I just set it to idle and it fired right up. Got the first trunk sawed up and fixing to go back out and cut the 2nd of the two trees up that the windstorm knocked down a couple weeks ago. Will be glad to have all that mess cleaned up. I'm saving the logs I cut up, black walnut and maple to have wood to use on my lathe.
Starting between the knees is fine if your feet are too big. Dont pull on full choke more than 3 or 4 times( even if you dont hear it). It will stay warm for 30min to an hour( can start it from idle).
Thank you for posting this video. After viewing quite a number of others, you were the only one to mention moving the chain brake position. I had the saw running but the chain was not moving until I watched your video.
I just watched all the videos from Stihl on this and was still confused... till this video. How is yours 10x better than the manufacturers?? Thank you!
So glad I've came across this video. Perfect explanation. Just bought it and really the demo I had from the seller was not as safe and clear as this one
Thanks for the clear explanation on the proper procedural way of starting a machine that could potentially take your hand or foot right off. Stay safe out there people.
Don't know what I'd do without the you tubes. I sure didn't see that sequence of steps in the manual. Hey Stihl a one-page quick start guide would be really helpful.
Thanks my man. That was very well explained. I bought and only used my chainsaw 3 years ago. Thanks to you I was able to restart it. Now I can really use it again
Nice chainsaw.. for some reason my ms170 always starts without the choke on.... Don't know why... From the beginning 2 years ago and I don't use it much... Maybe 11 times in 2 years.... I still have Motomix fuel from day of purchase and Stihl chainsaw bar oil... Good little saw for my home....
Shouldnt startup your saw on run position while throttle is closed... It works but not good to throttle device I guess... Start when it's half choke position with throttle is opened... If you pull throttle trigger it opens... when released it closes...
Great demonstration ! 👍 How come it takes about 10 strokes total to start a Stihl? Are they all the same? I’ve been watching a few Stihl videos to make up my mind and it seems to be the case. I own Husky’s (don’t want to start a fight here 😇) and they usually need 3 pulls to start (cold). I am in the process of buying a new saw and I wanted to go with a Stihl but I hesitate regarding this matter. Kind regards, Yves
Wow, I tried figuring it out with the manual. Zero luck w/ that. I was way off base, didn’t know why the choke feature wouldn’t stay down, among other things. What’s the tiny screw driver for that included in the parts bag?
Excellent and thank you. Short, informative and to the point. The choke release can be confusing. Plus the process of getting to full choke. Great job.
I do not like having the engine rev up with the chain brake on so I've been cranking in the lowest position, then moving to the idle position before cranking again. So far so good but I guess there may be conditions where you will want the throttle in lock position for a second or two (cold temps maybe ??).
I started mine wrong.. After the choke I used the warm start lever, it turned on from there but then the engine really gone wild since the throttle trigger was activated.. Lasted for 10 secs we can't turn it off but then it did automatically ... It's just that we thought it's not safe to use anymore..? 😢
Its still safe to use, as long as you didnt have the chain brake on as well, and burn the clutch. If its not melted underneath the bar cover(the cover with the two nuts on the side) then it should be safe to use still.
I just purchased this and I hate it. It’s really stupid to start. I will be taking it back. Learned my lesson. Don’t buy something cheap. Get the $400 one
On mine, it has a switch right above the handle that has STOP with an arrow pointing up. You can move the switch straight up or 90° to the left. Yours is different. What’s that about?

This is why we post this stuff haha. Glad to hear you have it figured out now!
exactlty,,,,lol
I done the same thing....
its like the matrix. you can search and download to do anything*

Thanks for the video. In the past, we didn't need an engineering degree to start a saw. This video saved me a lot of frustration.
Great to hear!
I have an engineering degree and still had to watch this…
God you gotta love youtube for instructionals

We are the longest standing Stihl Dealership in Canada! Thank you!!!
You deserve an Emmy or an Oscar. Great stuff... Thank you.
The manual to my new Stihl is crap in many ways, your video made my day and more. Thanks!!
Wow, you just answered my question about the full choke! Excellent! Thank you.
So glad I've came across this video. Perfect explanation. Just bought it and really the demo I had from the seller was not as safe and clear as this one
Ditto on that. I’m like WTHeck. The 60 second demo, uh, what all did I miss? Couldn’t get anything to sync.
Thanks for the clear explanation on the proper procedural way of starting a machine that could potentially take your hand or foot right off. Stay safe out there people.
Cheers mate, first video that actually helped me start my chainsaw, it was starting to drive me crazy...
THANK YOU for this video!!!! I bought my first Stihl MS170 from an estate sale and I’m getting to use it today. This helped a LOT!!

Noted! We will create one!
Holy shit! Thank you. I was about to take this thing back.
I just bought this chainsaw. Thanks for the lesson! My first chainsaw and I was a bit intimitated.
Thanks my man. That was very well explained. I bought and only used my chainsaw 3 years ago. Thanks to you I was able to restart it. Now I can really use it again

Great video, easy to follow. I was ready to ditch my gas Stihl and buy an electric…. Hope this gets it running.
Mine never would start bought elictric
Thanks for the video / tips.. I’m going to try this method today as my 170 is always super difficult to get started from cold (unlike old Stihl saws)
That was clear and simple. Thanks for helping out us greenhorns.
Excellent video, quick and to the point. Great job

Glad you think so!
Thankyou. You identified a trick that wasn't mentioned in the manual.
Its what we do🙏😁

Great information and demonstration

Thanks for review and Direction, I'm headed to ACE to purchase.
Exactly right. Good video. Love my 170.
Perfect! Thanks, started right up 👍🏼
very straight forward; thank you sir!
desde Chile un saludo. Entendí perfectamente las instrucciones con mi inglés basico. Así de bien explicado está.
Great demonstration ! 👍

Hi, This is a brand new saw (never been started), takes a couple extra pulls typically on brand new saw. A used saw takes like 3-5 pulls from cold!
Amazing it worked thank thank you!!!!
Thanks for the clear and concise info.
Quick and to the point.
Thank you
Awesome demonstration. Thanks!
Great work!
Big help,thanks!

Excellent!
Excellent job. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Very helpful, thank you!
Thank you my friend!
Good description thankyou
Thank you. Perfect video.
Thank you for the instructions
thank you great video
Thanks, work great!
awesome video
Thank you so much!!!!
Glad it helped!
that chainsaw really be looking mintyy
You didn't mention the black round knob above the handle. What's that do?
Its a lock for the air filter cover. You need a flat head screwdriver to turn and unlock it!
Thank ya!
😂 and here I am thinking that it’s broken without pulling the lever 😂😂
Thanks for posting
Can it be replaced with an 18" chain length?
Are my feet unusually large?....I can't fit my booted foot into that skinny handle when starting the saw.
Nice video
Very useful, TQ
Is it normal for my brand new chainsaw to automatically shut off if is idling for a few seconds
What is the fuel mixture for that saw?
50gas:1oil
