    Graphics cards haven’t always been luxury components people on Reddit can use to flex on their poorer subordinates: in fact, GPUs as we know them only came into existence in the 1990s. Since then, GPUs have radically changed in fundamental ways, and looking towards the future, GPUs are set to continue to change. But what exactly is a GPU, how have they changed over time, and where are we now? We’re glad you asked. Today, we’re going to take a look at the evolution of the GPU, examine what has changed and what hasn’t, and speculate as to what the future of PC gaming has in store for us all. This isn’t aimed at being a comprehensive overview of anything, but more of an exploration of the evolution of PC hardware over the course of the last three decades. So, put your pitchfork away if you brought one, grab some popcorn, and settle in for a history lesson!

    Trident started Graphic User Interfaces for Windows 2D acceleration. Matrox, founded in 1978, started dual-display, multiscreen and even promoted bump mapping technology with the G400. And 3DFX created real 3D acceleration GPU, as for PowerVR that was later featured in the Sega Dreamcast! And SGI help to create the first 3D movies for Hollywood with their Silicon Graphics. And finally Microsoft developed DirectX that opened 3D possibilities to the PC after OpenGL. Please don’t wipe off those who ruled 3D before the GeForce and Radeon eras. Don’t you all remember Quake, HL or Unreal? 👑✌️

    I think 4k is more than sufficient. There is no need for 8k or 16k. Even if it came through, a very very very small fraction of people could afford it.
    There are channels like Niktek who always tease people not having a graphic card
    I just wanna say that more than 50% of people cannot even afford a laptop
    And if some of 'em which could, they can afford a shitty laptop or a box-like pc in which you can just do online classes and can watch gameplays of other people on youtube.

      Even 1080p does just fine. Honestly, it takes stillshots of a game and really zooming in and going "hey look, these shadows look a little softer".
      At 60+ fps, it just isn't very noticeable. To the point videos exist of 4k vs 1080p and most people can't spot the difference.
      Most people are playing on 15" laptop screens or 24" gaming monitors. At usual distances we sit from these screens, 1080p gets what you need. 4K won't be very noticeable.
      Why do I get this funny feeling though that low end cards of each generation will still JUST work with 1080p but be fine at 4K? In fact we see it today where 1080p to 4K barely makes an FPS difference, which to me is just bizarre and red flagging purposeful shenanigans. 4K takes 4x as much compute power and RAM. Yet going from 60fps 4k to 1080 gets you to...70ps or so.

Looks sharper, bigger screen size, and I can still get good framerates. 4K gaming is getting relevant now too; and for a good reason, it looks amazing. If consoles are now aiming towards 4K, then I see no reason why pc shouldn't. Granted though, if you're happy with 1080p, then thats all well and good. I don't judge. But me personally. I've played at 1080p on consoles and TV's long enough that I can safely say it doesn't impress me anymore. (I've switched to PC now, from a Ps4)

    Check out the size of transistores. Shrinked from 220nm (nano meters) in 1999 to 8nm 2020. Almost 30x gain. They started with 16 shading units that run parallel. Today its 10496 shading units, 656x gain. But maybe transistors cant shrink smaller than 3nm, so maybe gpu power triples in next years and gets stuck

    • @ejkk9513
      @ejkk9513 Год назад

      A nanometer is a useless measurement in today's chips. They started to lose meaning in 2009 and they've been lying since. It's all about transistor density today. That's the only way to truly improve the manufacturing process and increase performance. TSMC'S "5nm" process is between 36-22nm depending on how you measure it. It's nowhere near 5nm. It will be nearly impossible to get to a true 5nm process.

  • @jf_tv8611
    @jf_tv8611 3 года назад +8

    First of all you skipped a lot of history. Secondly, the video is VERY over-simplified, plus there cannot be an increase in resolution if the display cannot output a resolution which is higher than the display’s. One more thing you mention that running 4K at high FPS is impossible, and yet a couple seconds before saying that you show doom eternal running at 130fps on a 3080, BRUH. Back to topic. There were and are standard resolutions for monitors and TVs and as such, with every graphics card there wasn’t and won’t always be an increase in resolution. The one who controls resolution is the screen manufacturer. Additionally around 7:35 you mention that the cores that power ray-tracing(RT) also power Deep Learning Super Sampling(DLSS). That is not true, DLSS is powered by Tensor cores. Additionally, the newest consoles don’t have beefy GPUs, plus they are already outclassed by the GPUs for the PC market. Not a video I would recommend.

    8k games will become commonplace in 10 years for sure especially as the mainstream market adapts to 8k televisions. Photorealistic scenerery indistinguishable from reality will take place 15-20 years from now, with rendering photorealistic humans taking a bit longer at 25 years from now.

    • @Oxibase

      The photorealistic humans are definitely the most difficult given the amount of brain capacity in use for observing every possible aspect of other humans whether it be words used, facial expressions of emotion, body language and tone of voice used.

    I can't believe we made it through this video without discussing 3d rendering engines. While these graphics cards may be awesome in terms of raw computing power, it is the 'game engines' and frameworks which have made a substantial difference. DirectX and Proton are single-handedly the most important aspect of the technology, otherwise games would not be released at anywhere near their frequency as everyone would have to re-invent their modelling systems.

    I know topic is evolution not history of GPU, but skiping late 80's and almost all 90's, especially 3dFx and their VooDoo cards just had me stop video after 3 min mark and write this comment to let all know even before they start watching, this is a waste of time, because 3dFx made such big contribution to GPU evolution it is almost a crime to skip it. 3dFx was first to bring 3D graphics into market, they also ones who invented technology called SLI and sadly later become part of Nvidia, which even used SLI in their GPU's. One could even said that without 3dFx today Nvidia could not be where it is now and there would not be cars wih 2 GPU's on one board(of course 3dFx was also first witch that idea). Huge fail with skipping 90's and 3dFx cards...

    Resolution is indeed overrated, in fast moving gameplay 4k is in fact unnecessry, rendering an image to a large screen is an issue requiring high resolutions but only if you get so close to the screen as to be able to see the individual pixels, overall field of view is the predominant issue.
    Like apple promoted with the concept of the retina display, the resoloution only needs to be high enough to make the pixels invisible at the normal viewing distance.

    why people dislike this vid

    • @mikewallace3d
      @mikewallace3d 3 года назад +1

      Because they completely omitted 3dfx and their Voodoo cards. It's like talking about walking on the moon without bringing up Neil Armstrong.

      @OvermannOnline 3 года назад

      @@mikewallace3d This is also why I disliked. You can't talk about where 3d graphics cards started without talking about 3dfx.

      @@OvermannOnline I knew the moment he said something to the tune of : GPU’s of the first decade of the 21 century were dominated by the two things rivalry between ATI and NVIDIA ...
      I knew we won’t hear anything about 3Dfx, S3, Permedia, Matrox, none of them.

      @@gwynbleidd13 Yeah, it's pretty much disinformation... AKA: fake news. It's to bad, the rate that everything progressed back then was incredible.
      I've still got a voodoo 2,3, and 5. I believe I also have Matrox Millennium and S3 Savage somewhere too.

    Here's my take. I'm shocked consoles at their price point drastically outperforms pc. 500 for series X and I spent 13090 on my gaming rig which is a 1080p experience. Over double spent (retail) and I can't even get 75% of what consoles have

    Evolution is not alwayy a good thing. I don't like the bulky card of today. I prefer the card from the 90's. Single slot graphics cards for the win!
