THANK YOU RICK! Between you, Dr. Ned Hallowell, and Jessica McCabe from How to ADHD, My ability to manage my life is actually starting to develop. Thank you for being loud and proud!
Yes! That same triad has been transformative for me too, especially Jessica. And like Rick said in another talk, there are many things one can do to help treat ADHD, but the biggest thing is JUST. KNOWING. What a phrase! YES! Simply KNOWING it's ADHD has quite _literally_ changed my life. One even could say... _saved_ my life.
"ADD & Loving It" - It took me 3 tries before I could watch it all the way through. IT IS GREAT!!! I so wish the information we know now was known in the late fifties and sixties. Perhaps I wouldn't have gotten the "Isn't reaching full potential" on so many report cards. No kidding. I'm still learning how to understand & embrace this brain particular. Thank you Rick for your work in this field.
This guy has been so important when I got diagnosed. I can tackle all the prejudice with his help. And I am kinder to myself for not being organized being able to focus etc. The biggest problem for me is peoples looks, judgement and inability to understand. Dont take breaks!
😭😭😭😭 the story of the guy who was going to end things. I think ADHD needs talked about more so people can get help they need and not have the stigma behind it.
I think the sad part is when you have adhd and no one wants to treat you or prescribe you something to minimalize the effects. I've had adhd and no doctor wants to give me treatment. On top of which, even getting it diagnosed takes time and effort that people with adhd can't even do. You expect people with adhd to, book a doctor appointment, get asked 3 questions after waiting 2 hours to actually get seen, be told to make another appointment to get asked 2 more questions, then be told to have a blood test, then be told to wait a week, then see the doctor to see if your blood test is ok, then wait another week or 2 to get assets by like a theopists. Alot of people just say screw it and deal with adhd their whole life because it's so god dam difficult to even get it diagnosed these days. And it's probably why alot of people with adhd mainly men just comit suicide eventually, because they just think it's never going to settle and the pain, depression, anxiety, the head constantly switched on and throbing, the sleepless nights. Just gets to them and they can't take it anymore
Yeah, it takes really a lot of patience to keep up with the scheduled appointments etc. But I learnt that they got a lot going in their lives too. Take care of yourself. As you said there are many supportive avenues other than formal therapy support. ❤️ Love
Thank you for everything you do, Rick. You're making a huge difference to me and my partner at a crucial time in my life. And making me laugh while doing it. ;-)
I got diagnosed last week. I started my journey by taking your online test, watched a few more videos and then contacted my Dr who got me an appointment with a psychiatrist. So I just want to say thank you. I'm 43 now
You lose your keys, and I check the mail three times a day. While checking the mail one day, I found the box empty, and my right hand full of mail that I'd removed from the box minutes previously. The keys in hand were a stimulus to go check the mail.
I have to put my wallet and keys on the same end table or they disappear. I reported my wallet stolen and found it on the radiator in my living room. My cellphone migrates. It shows up on the porch, in the refrigerator, on the toilet tank, in my truck, in my jacket, in my pocket, or even in my hand. If I have to make a call on a Friday I say to myself it can wait until Monday, I don't want to bother them. Monday comes and I figure a lot of other people thought the same thing and they will be less busy Monday. I had forgot Monday was a holiday so i will call Tuesday. I forget Tuesday through Thursday. So it is Friday again and I figure I might as well wait until Monday...and the cycle continues.
Thank you for this talk!!! You hit all of the emotions. I’m from the US so I didn’t know about you. You are amazing, funny and so smart! My son is struggling with Add. Decided he does want to take his meds anymore. But it’s his senior year in high school. So his grades have went down the tubes. Now he is doubting himself and ability to go to college.
I hope you’re managing to find a good path for your son (or even better, that he finds one for himself) and that the world he grows up in will be more truly inclusive and appreciative of his true abilities rather than judging him for not fitting into the neuro-typical mould. When I was his age, I pretty much failed all my exams but ended up finding a less conventional path (that does still very much involve universities). I won’t claim that I’ve fulfilled all my potential or that I don’t struggle, but sometimes emerging from adversity can lead to greater things and we need to advocate for society to embrace and appreciate diversity rather than branding people who don’t measure up to tired outmoded standards - such as those of high school exams - as failures.
My diagnosis changed my life at 46 years old. I completed my undergraduate degree, got accepted into a top Masters program, and got selected for a 2-year expatriate assignment in Malaysia. Please go see a neurologist if you have symptoms.
kichb37 Go see a professional, psychologist or psychiatrist so they may confirm your suspicions and steer you on the path of managing it. Also took that step even against family wishes, and am so glad I did. only two sessions later and for the first time ever I have hope that the chaos in my life will be finally tamed.
You explained it the best. I was diagnosed at 35 yes old. I had many failures medicated at 50. I am yet to see ADHD mother who didn't go nuts, Unless you're highly talented or rich..... ADHD will rip anyone off their social life, money, family and sanity.
This is incredible. Its always been my dream to be a film director but as I'm about to start college, I'm wondering if I can do this even though it means the world to me because college isn't built for people with my brain. This gives me hope.
Was watching this on public television. I check most of the boxes. Self medicated for decades and overwhelmed by anything that does not hold my attention. Two divorces, lost friends, family that can't understand. Flunked spelling and straight A's in History. Suspended. My 2nd wife had us go to counseling then told me she wanted a divorce. I don't even remember going to the counseling. Obsessed with comedy and music. Even had a couple crazy songs played on Dr. Demento.
For me the right career was tattooing. High stress, and interesting. I’m horrible at the small talk, paperwork, taxes, organizing my supplies, etc..Thank god for Google calendar or I would be screwed.
Didn't everyone grow up watching the red green show? I know that I have them to thank for my truck running. They taught me that there is always a good way to solve the problem, you just have to be willing to look outside of the normal.
I love red green and actually it helps with my add because it puts my creative juices to work and helps me focus when I'm problem solving and can't focus long enough to come up with ideas. Your degrees do explain how you were able to come up with 300 episodes of handyman corner 🤣
Somebody took over the website, they removed the amazing videos done by Rick Green. ☹️😓 Including the one called "UNOFFICIAL ADHD QUIZ," starring RICK GREEN. It was so accurate and so funny.
Thank you for providing this! my family believes I have this disorder. A past dr prescribed Adderral for me. I recently read that Adderral taken with Citalipram (for depresion) can cause issues. My new dr said to take them at separate times. I've not sen any improvement. I'll have to look into getting tested.
I don't either. You might have developed coping strategies, it's very common. I was diagnosed at 34 and I learned that my perfectionism is a way of dealing with the chaos. Everything has to have its place in my house and on my computer. Nothing is random. But there are many downsides to that strategy as well; you become very inflexible. A few years back my girlfriend and I moved in together. Turned out I have ADD and she has ADHD. Can you imagine how our relationship almost crashed and burned because I needed everything to be in its right place, while she was leaving stuff all over the house being a chaotic force of nature?

rick green is a hero.
The regifting joke was gold. Got a belly laugh out of me.
:D truly one of my fondest memories laughing at Bill on Red Green alongside my father. I will always cherish your comedy Mr. Green!
A lot of this totally resonates. Thank you Rick.
We’ll be fine as soon as we’re diagnosed
This guy is phenomenal!
Wonderful to be educated and more wonderful yet it’s to do something with your knowledge. Thanks for your actions Mr. Green!
Thank you. Your work has helped to save my very life. xoxo

I love the height analogy! Perfect.
I learned about inattentive add yesterday and now I'm sure that I have it. I'm so happy!!!!!

Money can't buy happiness but it prevents homelessness.
God bless you Rick.
I wish I could like this video six times.
I used to watch the Red Green show with my dad! Very funny show!!! "She might not find you handsome, but at least she'll find you handy!" 😂
I couldn’t give this a bigger thumbs up

of course Mohawk would host a TEDx talk on a subject that would be EXTREMELY helpful to me 2 years after I graduated -.-

The audience has no humor.
Or at least not the inside knowlage that makes it funny
Or, the microphone isn't angled towards them and you couldn't hear so clearly. Sometimes that happens for these smaller Ted Talks.
Lol i was thinking the same thing.
