  • Michael Hampton plays a version of "Maggot Brain" that is strikingly reminiscent of the original Eddie Hazel classic on his sweet Gibson Flying-V. Check out George Clinton in his Butterfly costume as the curtains close on the first half of the show.

don't worry about who's copying who...just lay back in your chair and let this take you to another place....somewhere in your mind where you aren't comparing things...just let it flow - maggot brain is a state of mind...

Sucks when you remember seeing him twice and not really fully understanding how AWESOME and INNOVATIVE what your hearing really is. How special and rare yet made everyone around me stop and not make a noise while they played this song. It freaked me out but I was 12, not allowed in these places. However wherever I had cousins we were gonna sneak in regardless. If it were not for our young perverted minds we would have just stayed home and watched "the gong show". Thank God for youtube for it allows me to remember how stupid we were for taking such a risk seeking in NOT for the music but for the fine women (fans) who wore no bra and often no drawers.....

They’re both great, but Eddie was more of a writer than Hampton. You can’t even compared their body of work. Most of Hampton’s work thats noticeable are solos. He comes from a more metal/hard rock angle and definitely as far as tone too. Eddie was groove, soul, funk and rock with lots of feeling. Michael Hampton’s biggest career hurdle has been that he’s been in Eddie’s shadow from day one as a kidd. Would’ve been interesting to see what he would’ve done with a project he was the main force behind, but lots of the P-Funk crew were used beautifully by George, but didn’t have enough on their own to do the same level of work. Lots of talent and work went into those songs. Definitely not just George, but he was the mastermind that made it all work. He took these crazy parts and made history. I feel for the Kidd though. He’s amazing and deserves to be appreciated for his own work. That said, he definitely admired Eddie and kept his legacy alive. If he weren’t playing Maggot Brain after Eddie left then that song wouldnt have had the legacy it does. There’s a Funk video podcast called Truth in Rhythm that interviews funk players. Lige Curry (bassist for P-Funk All-Stars, etc. and Michael’s cousin) talks about Hampton leaving (basically running away) his parents as a teenager and joining the group. The fact that he lived and made that music is incredible. He’s still doing it, though he left George for good it seems

Maybe its the light. Maybe he's just thinner than I'd ever seen him, back in the day. Its just really uncanny that Mike took on such a look, as well as a sound! For sure, WE DO LOVE US SOME EDDIE HAZLE, so its not hard to understand how Mike got sooo soooo into pocket with Eddie's Spirit/Soul and projected him so thoroughly. As we say, when we are showing praise and appreciation for the presence of our ancestors when they show through for us, "Ashe!"

Yes Hazel's play is great, but this particular one, has a bigger impact to me. Does that make me wrong? NO, just makes me Different from you. But based on your Medical Diagnosis, I need to clean out my ears!!!!

Indeed, that world would be boring, and my comment was merely reflecting my opinion. Rude? Perhaps, but not out of context in my opinion. You stated that this version is the best, meaning better than all versions, including Hazels, the guy who came up with this masterpiece to begin with. I consider that to be a rude statement. If you can't stand to have you opinion criticized, then why would you express it in the first place?

@grimes1 Just a reminder, but Eddie wrote this song when he was 17 yrs old. Eddie's version was fluid because he was able to tap into some inner demons that gave him such an emotional range that he was able to translate through his guitar. If I'm not mistaken Mike was 17 when he was hired by George to replace Eddie.

It actually "Looks" Like Eddie Hazle, as well as being a "Strikingly reminiscent of his classic performances of Magot Brain, for which he will always be fondly remembered.

When this song was created, George Clinton asked the young Eddie Hazel to play the first part of the song as if someone had just told him his mother had died. He then exhorted him to play the latter part as if someone had walked up and told him it was all a lie, and that his mother was NOT dead, but alive...the young guitarist came through supernaturally if you ask me.
