Heavyweight contender of the 40's and 50's. He was one of the leading contenders for Rocky Marciano's Heavyweight title in 1955. Donations - www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
Valdes was a decently schooled, very large (like Hasim Rahman/George Foreman, his height/weight only partially tell the tale; the guy's frame was massive) hard puncher, in a very under-rated era. That said, he had his limitations. He was fairly easy to hit, he looped his right hand, and he wasn't particularly quick. But despite his porous defense, his chin was excellent and if you weren't on your A-game, he'd wear you down with his size and pressure.
The common sentiment seems to be that Valdes could have given Marciano a good fight had they battled. But if a far out of prime Louis knocked out Valdes, I don't see him having much of a chance against Rocky.
I tend to agree although Valdes was actually quite good for a very short period of time. If he'd have been given a shot around '54 or '55 I think he'd have given Marciano a tough fight. Also Louis never fought Valdes.
@@hanzagod Joe Louis fought Nino Valdes in exhibition matches: "The biggest boxing crowd St. Petersburg has had in years, some 4,000 fans, saw Joe Louis in a 4 round exhibition with Nino Valdez, of Cuba. Louis downed Valdez twice. NOTE: Valdez record at the time was 14-5-2." The dates for the Valdes exhibitions: Valdes Jan28th 1949 4rds Feb7th 1950 4rds Mar 14 Nino Valdes Houston, Tx EX 1 -Louis knocked Valdes out
Nino eventually had to retire in 1959 because of detached retina . He spent the last 30 years of h i s life as a doorman and security guard . The money had run out long before. He died in a small one room flat in NY in 2001 at the age of 76. The Golden Days a long vanished memory.....
Nino didn't like to train so there were some fights where he looked unbeatable and others where he looked average. On his best days he'd have given Marciano all he could handle...
Actually next in line was Tommy Jackson, he was ranked #1 after Moore lost to Rocky. That or a Moore rematch, he and Jackson traded places at 1 and 2. Valdes kinda diminished following his second loss to Moore.
Sorry. This does not hold up to scrutiny. Valdes was rated number 1 for two years prior to fighting Moore. The same month as this fight, between two top contenders, Rocky gave a title shot to the visibly out of shape Don Cockell, who’d lost to a middleweight. Marciano would be far less criticized had he fought and beaten the big, powerful Cuban during the two years Valdes was top contender and not the soft touch Cockell. Read Mike Stanton’s definitive biography.
To be fair : according to reports from the time Cockell was 10 - 1 underdog and weighed in at 14 st 9 lb against Rocky 13 st 7 lbs. Cockell did ok for the first 3 rounds but after that the beat down commenced and he took quite a beating hanging off the ropes at the end of the 8 th round. He came back out for the 9th and was down twice before it was stopped. Rocky praised the guys guts as did reporters at the time. He gave it his best shot and could have quit earlier. He only fought twice more .Losing to Nino in 3 rounds in one of those. He died of cancer in 1983 aged 54.
Underrated

Cuba always seems to have either the smallest fighters in the world or absolute giants, nothing in between.
Aha its true man
Erislandy Lara is somewhere in between.
Lmaoooo
Jose Napoles, Gavilán, Legra and Rodriguez are other examples .
Valdez was in decline when he fought Liston
Todys heavies. No chance look at this guy no hype just ability
Pure power fighter like Julian Jackson Hanza you done it again always look forward what you bring to the table
This man was talented. I think Rocky's conditioning and determination would have carried him to a late KO over Valdez in a heck of a fight
I see why Patterson avoided this man
Is it me or does this guy look like the present day boxer, Luis Ortiz....slightly 🤔
Ayoooo I was just thinking that shit too Lmao
It's a small Island Cuba.
hard puncher tough fighter
Valdez had that last dude looking crazy!
Paul Bright he was. Dam he probably forgot about his life.

Anyone know how he passed? Rumour is cancer did him in

@That Retroholic i disagree nino 8 round tko
No way he gives Marciano all he can handle. You’re vastly overrating him. Marciano and Valdes sparred once and Valdes left the ring puking
He would've been Marciano's 50th fight
Crank Sinatra The great Archie Moore prevented that fight from happening by beating Valdez to become Rockys challenger.
andijw79 any film of Moore vs Valdez?
I've not searched it to be honest mate
Crank Sinatra just looked and there's a couple of highlights of the Mongoose fight

is there any footage of his fight with sonny liston?
Not online.
There is footage on my tapes
Roti chawal !?

Deserved a shot at Marciano's title but the Italian camp was too scared
Shut up!He and Moore fought to challenge Rocky!Winner was Moore and he challenged Rocky so Rocky fought the better one and that was Moore!
