If anyone is getting only custom *brushes* with preset, *unalterable colors* (most likely black) the image _needs_ to be reduced to *grayscale mode.* Then GIMP interprets black-vs-transparency as an application property of the .gbr-brush and lets you modify the color later. If the image is exported while in Image>Mode>RGB you just make a cousin to the paprika-brush. Or you could make multiple layers with different colors and export as an .gih for funky, color-changing "animated" brushes. Those could look pretty loopy.
Excellent. Every once in a blue moon I need to create a brush and since I don't do it very often I forget some step of the process or the brush folder location. So when that happens I always come back to this video. Works like a charm every time! Thanks for all the great tutorial content!
My god NICK! Thank you SO MUCH! I have been wanting to know HOW to do this! Thank you so much! Other dang tutorials make/made it so dang convoluted! THANK YOU!!!! ****HUGS****
Thete is a quick way of doing this. Change to grayscale, select and copy any area and in the brush library dialog a mask version of the clipboard contents appears as the second brush. You can immediately paint with this and then copy it to create another pernament brush.
So, THAT'S how to do it! Thank you! Quick question though... I have TONS of Adobe brush files, ending in .abr... Can I change the file extension to .gbr in Explorer and just drag them into the gimp folder? Or do I need to export them individually?
Thanks a lot for putting this tutorial together for us! On my Mac running Yosemite, I had to open Finder, select the Go menu in the top menu bar, click Go to Folder, paste ~/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.8/brushes then paste the brush files into that folder. It does not work if you try to put the files into Contents> Resources> Share> Gimp> 2.0> Brushes. Hopefully that helps someone trying to do this on a Mac. Also, themes have to go in~/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.8/themes. Your tutorials are top-notch!
Hey! NICK! Great Gimp brush tutorial. I was wondering if u can make a fully coloured brush (in RBG than in black and white)? Thanks For all Ur gimp and inkscape tutorials
I would make the brush in black and white and then just change the color once you're using it. If you don't make the brush gbr file monotone then you won't be able to change the color of it when you're using it.
Thanks for this Video. I also have a question. Do you know how I can blend colors in gimp? I try to draw realistic but don't know how to blend well and the smudge tool does not work for me (maybe I am doing sth. wrong). Maybe you can help me :). And thanks for the great Videos.
thank you very mush, but i can't seem to find the "brushes" folder on my mac, i wonder if anyone knows where that folder would be, i can't even find the GIMP folder (searching in spotlight returns nothing only the app and project files) weird
I'm asking as a total noob to graphic design and such. Aside from what you showed, what kind of effect can I achieve with brushes? I've personally never used any of them. I just use the default circle.
I creat brush tool of "Bubble" gbr & abr file & tried to install gimp program file. But not run. Its show always " unable to decode abr/gbr formate version 0 ". Now what can i do ??
Okay, so even though I followed each of these steps _exactly,_ my brush is still locked to grayscale and absolutely will not paint in any color other than what is stamped in with the file. What am I doing wrong? EDIT: Figured it out, the brush needs to be saved as a grayscale image. My image was black and white but the image mode was still RGB.
Can you please do a video of how to make just text for a t-shirt without a background that will show up on a t-shirt properly. I get my text made and put it on redbubble then it shows up on a huge black or white block and I started with a transparent for my background have no idea what I did
That depends from brush to brush, you have to actively watch for this yourself. I recomend to create a folder inside your brushes folder that is named either commercial-use or non-commercial-use to keep better track of it while working in GIMP. The folder name where the brush is located is shown, when clicking on a brush, directly under the selection window. I hope this helps
Hey love the videos!! I was just wondering what website did you download the gimp app ? I know there’s a lot of websites with the free the app. I just don’t won’t to download virus haha
Unfortunately that may not count as an actual brush despite the ability to use it as such. When clicking on this video I hoped to see how one could see the process in depth. As in see what can one do for pressure sensitivity and layered effects so the "brush" wouldn't act as spammed version of the copy and paste version of certain shapes. Here there is little to no reference to how one can create something that resemble the mark making or textures of actual tools. (for instance pencils or brushes of certain types or paint behavior) something for a digital painter to use. Either I misunderstood the title and had expectation the video couldn't provide or something else. This video is good as an introduction into custom brushes but not adequate in advancing to creating brushes one can use in general.
Have you set the file to grayscale before you exported it? If not it might be that it was exported in RGB-mode and therefore will not allow to change coulor. You can change the coulor mode in the menu "Image>Mode>Grayscale"

i have that problem . thank you
This is what I was looking for. Holy crap, why was this so hard to find?! Thank you so much!
Ofc he said that in the video
This is bloody fabulous. You've just saved me weeks of painstaking drawing! Thank you so much xxxx

From 4:23, get an image you want as a brush, save as .GBR, put in gimps brushes folder under GIMP2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes.
My god NICK! Thank you SO MUCH! I have been wanting to know HOW to do this! Thank you so much! Other dang tutorials make/made it so dang convoluted! THANK YOU!!!! ****HUGS****
Glad to help!
THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!! I DIDN'T EVEN HAD TO SEARCH ! THANKS SO VERY MUCH!!
Had to watch this again. Made sure to write down the steps. I will be busy this weekend on "brush creation projects" (haha). Thanks, Nick.

Thank you Nick!
Once again, you saved my day!!!

what an intro !
It's a fantastic simple intro for a fantastic designer!
Many thx! Great tutorial not only telling what to do but also helping us understand why we do it and how the software actually work.
Oh man I'm working on some custom height maps for a video game and this will be a game changer. Kudos
So, THAT'S how to do it! Thank you!
Quick question though... I have TONS of Adobe brush files, ending in .abr... Can I change the file extension to .gbr in Explorer and just drag them into the gimp folder? Or do I need to export them individually?
ABR files will work just as well. I have some Photoshop brushes installed myself.
I really enjoy your tutorials! Thank you!

1 question..given the fact that they came from the internet, can they be used commercially or only for personal projects? Great vid by the way.

Hey! I quite agree with you.
I was hoping for more information in the way to use dynamics of brushes for realistic paintings.
@Rick Henderson unfortunatley the linked video is now private
I don't know where I went wrong, I followed the instructions and it will only make the brush black..
Thanks.
Very useful! :D by the way I like your new youtube profile picture!
Thanks! Always looking to improve.
Thank you!! ^_^
My brush was still black, even when I changed the fore and background colors to red for example
love it awsome
I can't change my brush's color. :c

It didn't work for me... Never again.
Bruh!
I thought this was going to be simple, but no! Paint shop can do a custom brush in about three clicks!
I hope you know, that you are amazing! Thank you for being, Mr. Saporito! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)
Can reveal your face brother?
I can't believe what a dunce I am!
It does not work. Do not make tutorial if you do not know how to help. Vote down.
