    I absolutely love the Whiz Kids minis. Ever since I bought my first one which was the male human cleric you have in your video, I've been buying them every Thursday at my local D&D game. They take paint extremely well, whether it's Citadel or reaper or regular craft paint. They are awesome!

    These minis look really solid, and as someone who has been trying to get more into collecting minis and using them at my table, I am excited to get my hands on these guys.
    The also look sturdy AF.

      They also go perfectly together with the D&D Boardgame minis from "Wrath of Ashardalon", "Legend of Drizzt", "Castle Ravenloft" and "Temple of Elemental Evil", which are the cheapest option to get many official D&D miniatures in bulk for a fair price, each of the boardgames containing 42 miniatures plus interlockable dungeon tiles and tons of tokens for around 45-60 bucks. The latter (Temple oEE), for example, contains a group of three gnoll archers. One blister from Nolzur's Marvellous Miniatures contains two different pack gnolls with melee weapons for 3.99, and then you have two melee fighting gnolls, one of which can act as commander, and three ranged fighting gnolls, which is enough for a whole encounter group. Add in a few hyenas that you can get cheaply from Reaper Bones, and you have enough gnoll power for a whole campaign.

    Just painted the human male cleric today the one with the sword. Looks really amazing for a plastic miniature. It absorbs the paint really well.

    Got quite a few of these minis for our D&D sessions. They are pretty solid minis for their price and I like how they can serve as both heroes as well as NPC's for us to fight against. Details can vary from sculpt to sculpt, as you may have noticed :)
    As for painting; Wash the sculpts first to wash away any residual wax/oil from the print. I've had it on a few of them where I had painted them and then the paint would chip off of them as a result. They're amazingly easy to paint and if you want to get into painting, you can always pick up a few base and layer paints from the Games Workshop stores which work well for these models. (or any other company that sells good quality miniature paints)

    I like Reaper Bones for "generic" monsters that you may need several of. Orcs, goblins, kobolds, etc... I will then use a WizKid as the leader/boss/prominent monster.

      Kryliss Norwind Agree, I’ve started to collect some cheap basic minis from bones to use as enemies in Talisman, looks so much better to have minis on top of the cards😊

    I've bought a couple of these packs so far (one Pathfinder, one D&D). It's hard to beat the price and they're pretty good quality. I'm not really a fan of the pre-primer though. 1) I prefer a darker primer and 2) I've had to fix seems in at least one model so far with green stuff which means I had to do another primer coat anyway.
    Overall though, 2 minis for $4 or $5 USD is a hell of a deal. They go for $4.99 at my FLGS.

    There is a paint Reaper has called Brown Liner (or any liner but brown is typically the best). If you use that in place of primer for Bones. You can use any brand paint to paint as normal.

    I always weight the bases on my minis. Coins and metal slugs are good to use as bases. I flock with sand and Krazy Glue (painted up like earth & turf) to which chopped up metal sprues or lead fishing weights can be added with little ado. Heavier bases really make minis behave better when people bump the table. For plastic minis, I consider weighty bases an absolute must.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад

      I do the same! Some form of metal on the base is a must for me if it’s a plastic miniature.

  • @AmesCarter

    Thanks for the videos! I have recently gotten into painting minis, and thought I would start with what I need for my campaign which is a whole lot of kobolds. So, I got a bunch of Bones kobolds and started painting. Before I could finish, my local game store got the WizKids kobolds, and they are really much better. The sculpts are more detailed, look more like the D&D illustrations and overall more interesting to me. There are a few drawbacks in that I find they have a lot more issues with molding lines, and it takes me longer to clean them up. Also, as a beginner I find them more difficult to paint because the detail on them is so small. But that issue will get better over time. I haven't given up on Bones for their variety, but I agree in a mini-to-mini comparison WizKids has a higher quality product.

    A great way to paint those clear plastic spell effects are to use watered down Warhammer glazes or glossy technicals like bloodletter, soulstone blue, or spiritstone green. You should look for a viscosity similar to a shade/wash, but just a tad thicker. You could also use vallejo fluorescent paints. Make sure that the paints are watered down enough so that you don't get full coverage of the clear plastic, as that would make it look like a normal solid object. This ends up looking slightly glowing, and gives them that esoteric energy vibe.

    The price point is insanely good for 2 minis pre-primed and incredible detail. Such a good value and the new sculpts are amazing.

  • @mikegould6590
    @mikegould6590 7 лет назад +2

    I hope to get some of the new D&D/Pathfinder unpainted minis soon. I mainly collect Reaper Bones (dropping plastic minis causes fewer heart attacks than metal minis), and I'm confident in my painting skills. There have been claims that the Bones lack detail, but once they're scrubbed and primed, a lot of detail reveals itself.
    I look forward to the new releases from WizKids and hope to expand my collection soon.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 лет назад +1

      I certainly don't mind Bones, but on some models I have found the lack of detail such that I can't even tell what's what when painting. I usually resort to googling images of the models or looking in the Reaper Gallery.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 лет назад +1

      Also, a good dry brush after priming really helps reveal details too.

    • @mikegould6590
      @mikegould6590 7 лет назад +1

      I've found simply priming them with a good matte primer reveals a lot of details hidden by the shiny plastic. I also use a lighter to heat bent parts and I shave mold lines with a knife. Finer details like the writing on scrolls is done with a set of technical pens as opposed to a brush.
      My gaming is on a tight budget. That's one major reason for using Bones, aside from their greater durability. I also use cheap paints from Michaels and "okay" brushes. Everything else comes down to just taking the time and really caring about what I do.
      These newer models from WizKids will just make all of that more on point, given their superior sculpts and finer detail.

    i will say, when it comes to the insane amounts of detail on the wizkids unpainted minis, its both a blessing and a curse. The gnoll pack for dnd comes to mind. they have tons of little bones and bits and bobs hanging off of their belts and stuff that look great but are such a pain to paint with any level of precision

    I just bought a few this past weekend, Elf Druids, Elf Rangers and 2 Wolves. I can't wait to paint them, the detail on them is amazing!
    In regards to the translucent, spell effects, I'd imagine some sort of wash, maybe a watered down color.
    I love my green skins, but I'm not a fan of the huge head Pathfinder goblins.

  • @krylissnorwind7528
    @krylissnorwind7528 5 лет назад

    Bones minis don't take paint as well is because you have to scrub them with some warm soapy water and a toothbrush first then rinse them. After you let them dry for several hours, then you base them with a primer. The reason you have to wash them is because they may still have the mold releasing agent on them, which the sole purpose is to make the mini not stick to the mold.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  5 лет назад

      Right. I do wash them and let them dry thoroughly.

    The WizKids are ready to rock right out of the package. The level of detail is EXTREME and sometimes takes hours to get every detail painted on these characters. Reaper is easier to produce quickly as the detail is more limited and there aren't as many nooks and crannies.

    Nolzur's Miniatures tend to vary with the level of detail, for example, my female Aasimar wizard's arm looks quite bad while male human fighter and female elf paladin look much better. I overall like the models, will definitely buy more of these!

  • @vividknightmare4026
    @vividknightmare4026 7 лет назад

    Yeah, I've found that the D&D minis are much deeper cut, their lines are way more crisp. I haven't painted one yet, I have a grip of Bonez left to paint, but I did initially notice the details seem much more apparent on the D&D minis. Overall it is hard to claim which is 'better' for the reasons you stated in the video. Bonez has a massive library and if you are looking for something specific it is a bit easier to find it, also if price is a concern while the Bonez aren't actually cheaper (since the D&D ones are 2 packs), they do have a lower dollar amount on the shelf, even if you are only getting a single model instead of two. However, the D&D seem to have much better detail which I think will really shine when the painting is finished. Because they're a two pack they are actually very price competitive with Bonez. Finally they come in a molded package! Seems ridiculous BUT because they are packaged in a form fitting way they arrive WAY less bent than Bonez, while bonez says if you just hold them under hot water and rebend them they'll straighten fine, I have found that it isn't always true. You can correct a major bend to a degree but some models seem to have just been bent permanently to a degree. Really thorough video, great comparisons and you really covered all the angles.

    Def a cheaper alternative compared to when I buy GW miniatures. Once I get more of these will replace the bases with GW 25mm ones which are definitely better in terms of thickness and can add more detail. Can pick up a pack of 10 cheap from their stores.

    The capes should be able to detach for ease of painting it’s very difficult to reach some places to be able to paint. Although assembled some Reaper Bones can actually come apart that is they were glued together. This makes it a lot easier to paint. I find that these from wiz kids are great to look at unpainted however taking off mold lines rub off the primer naturally which means a re-prime is in order. I prime my Reaper Bones with Badger Stynalyrez Primer via airbrush which makes it simple. On a final note GW is still king when it comes to minis. I have a painting tutorial channel at The Miniature’s Paintbrush I will paint one of these up and do a review myself soon. Let me know what you think.

    I've been using reapers for about a year and I told myself I would NEVER use any other mini just because of the detail and ease of painting on reapers and I came across the Wiz Kids minis in my local shop last week and decided to pick up a box even though they weren't reapers. For the price and detail I figured I can't go wrong and I gotta say I LOVE THE WID KID MINIS! I got quite a few now, up here in canada, I paid $6.50 CAD. A price that I don't mind too bad paying. They look pretty good. I don't like the fact that packaging it's a colored CG model, instead of a actual painted mini. Most of the figures came out ok. My human barbarian's face was all mangled. It was pretty bad. All others came ok pretty good.

    I have several of the Deep Cuts, Nolzur's AND Bone miniatures; and I DO like Wizkid's better than Bones (for the most part). The Nolzur's goblins btw are a lot closer aesthetically to the Bone goblins. As for those clear parts on the Cleric (and others), use paints called Washes. I know both Vallejo and Citadel have several colors to chose from

    My only complaint about the Wiz Kids unpainted D&D miniatures is availability - they sorely underestimated demand. Price, detail, ease of painting - all are excellent, if you can GET them! (My favorite, by far, is the Adventurers Camp there are pieces that see use in every single game that I have run since buying the set.)

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад

      Those look nice. I need to pick them up. And yeah, the whole world has been looking for beholder minis for about eight months now. They just need to catch up and meet demand.

    • @YeAuldGrump

      For dungeon dressing, there is another contender for inexpensive unpainted plastics - Terrain Crate by Mantic. Almost exactly between WizKids and the Reaper Bones for crispness of detail. Very nice, and I got a lot of it during the Kickstarter for the line.
      My wife has laid claim to a bunch of it, even if she does call it my 'dollhouse furniture'. :) We have been painting our way through the hundreds of little plastic pieces of furniture at fast clip. (I also had to get her one of theWizKids Adventurer Camp sets I mentioned above - her witch wants to travel in a Gypsy vardo.)
      But Mantic seems to be focusing on the furniture and scatter models, not creatures and characters. (And now WizKids is doing some very similar furniture items... it is a good time to be a GM.)
      Mantic started doing the terrain because when they ran a Kickstarter for a dungeon crawl game, the furniture and terrain for the game sold three times better than the game itself....

      After literally months of trying, I finally got me grubby mitts on the Beholder in the Nolzur's Unpainted line.... Holy crap! There is now no question about why it has been in so much demand - I hope you can get your hands on one, for the price... heck, for a much higher price, it is an excellent model. Great detail, very expressive snarl, and writhing eyestalks.
      Too late for my wedding anniversary (my wife has started GMing Pathfinder) but I will be painting it for her to use for eating my adventuring party. :P
      Ironically, it arrived on my birthday.
      If you haven't managed to get one - keep trying - the beholder is worth it.

      I painted it and gave it to my wife as a 'real anniversary' gift. (The day she decided to tell me she was interested, not when we married. Marriage was just making it official. :) )
      Turns out there is another downside for the unpainted WizKids minis - last week I got a nice box, including the Umber Hulk... I didn't even get a chance to see half the minis before she started painting them. (I love having a wife that shares my hobbies - I will take her stealing my minis any day.)

  • @scottplumer3668
    @scottplumer3668 5 лет назад

    Agreed. The Wiz Kids detail is much better. I love Reaper Minis, but the Bones line just doesn't have the detail. The one advantage of Bones I've found is that with the softer plastic, they're a lot less fragile than the WK. So I guess it's a trade off. If you're playing with young players, the Bones might be a better pick because they'll stand up to more abuse. My players, though all adults, are still pretty brutal with minis.
    Painting-wise, WK wins again. The priming is done really well, and I haven't had any issues with it at all. With Bones, they needed to be washed first, then primed. The statement that they can be painted unprimed is simply false. I had paint bead up on unprimed Bones minis.

  • @propheticjoe

    Yeah prices on those are pretty great except when you get to the littler figures. The Pathfinder Goblins like you said get 4 with the Reaper Bones but the just regular Reaper Bones Goblins give you 6 and you can grab them for $3.19 on Miniature Market. Detail of the WizKids is amazing though.

    I got a pack of the vampires from the DnD line....as expected...I wasn't all that excited as I thought I would be...the details are not what I was expecting...yeah, I know...price is ok...but the lack of details/crispness is just about what I expected...a cheap .25 cents gumball machine plastic miniature.....I don't see these being all that fun to paint...maybe I got a bad batch...but that is going to suck....having to roll the dice and hope you get a good one IF you order online...
    don't get me wrong the idea is great...they should have done this years ago...besides the collectible aspect...but never fear....something better is coming..and it will be from me...stay tuned....
    but it's just a matter of quality control on the print side....both could do better..by leaps and bounds...
    but if you want cheap mini's will 'OK' details...then these should be a hit. So we will see.
    Thanks for making the video and keep up the good work.

      Oh for sure, dude. The price is easier to beat when you are buying in bulk. If you buy a game or a set like that you'll definitely get a better deal. When you are buying a la carte - one or two minis at a time, they get more expensive. But you're also getting more choice to get exactly what you want.

    • @RecluseAllKnight
      @RecluseAllKnight 7 лет назад

      Yeah if I was to get back into it I won't be buying the sets anymore, like you said a whole box will take you a lifetime and then you don't really get to choose the ones you really love you just get to choose what's in the box. After seeing how much time I spent on just one I would totally just buy them separate, I did keep all my dragons from reaper though since they would take so much time to paint.

  • @bigbossignition

    This video is obviously old now, but as someone currently painting some wizkids mini's and also a proud owner of Reaper Bones 4 kickstater, I can safely say Bones 4 knocks it out of the park compared to these. The newer bones is more rigid and sharper and a cheaper price point with the kickstarter. On top of that throw their new bones black line in he mix which is even crisper quality I've got to say I don't think I'll ever buy wizkids again.

    I like these models ,I think they very good overall but the bases are awful and to thin , I would have liked them to be more like the bases that come with the prepainted ones . So I use 1 inch citadel bases round bases and that I think really kicks them up a level.

    WARNING: Mold lines have not been removed prior to them being primed, if your into that kind of detail be prepared to use greenstuff and a re-prime. Detail is good, but a after a second prime and paint, you will lose some of the finer details.

  • @Engehaugen82
    @Engehaugen82 5 лет назад

    What about the pre priming wen you remove the mold lines?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  5 лет назад

      The primer comes off along those lines, but I usually don't stress it. Paint seems to cover fine.

    So there is a huge movement of people 3d priting their own minis. Not sure if that's something that interests you. But figured id throw it out there.

    these look slightly larger than the 28 mil pre-painted minis from D&D and PF minis. is this the case? Thanks for the vids.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 лет назад

      They are the same size as all my other miniatures, so I don't think that's the case. I have the pre-painted Pathfinder minis (iconic heroes) and a whole lot of bones and they are the same size as those.

    Is there a way to order the wizkids stuff online other than amazon? because the ones on there cost around 8/9€ each separate figure...

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад

      Miniature market sells them here in the U.S. Not sure about shipping to Europe.

      Thanks, but already checked there, and the shipping doubles the price of whatever order you place. Even if you order over 100€. It scales with the price of the order, wich id pretty odd...

    Hey Nate, this is an older video but I'm sure it's still relevant. Do these minis share a scale with the prepainted icons of the realms ones? Can they be used interchangeably without much size difference?

  • @stenmin1234

    While I agree the paint job for the pre-painted Wizkid small and medium figures are horrendous, the large and huge creatures have significantly better paint.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 лет назад

      Yeah, the only ones I have are the Pathfinder iconics. The level of detail in certain parts is really good, but other parts are pretty bad. And just zero highlights or shading.

    • @stenmin1234
      @stenmin1234 7 лет назад

      None of their pre-painted of any size really do any of the high quality shading and highlight. Also the iconic sets have a better paint job than most of the medium/small creatures (especially humanoids) in the big adventure path sets.
      But I do think it's worth noting that cost of what you're paying per piece seems to be inline with the quality of piece you get, in most cases.
