When I used to work at a games store, before the wizkids minis came out, the options for dragonborn/gnomes/tieflings/etc were so limited! It's great how many good D&D minis there are now, and the fact that these have variant options is also great!
I entered this hobby as a DND player, and have made lots of cool terrain. I really wanted to get into mini painting, but as was said in the video, most RUclips mini painters are painting war game minis. Lol that little yellow clamp was so adorable to me. It's the perfect mini clamp. Also these look like such an upgrade from the soft plastic D&D minis - can't wait for my local gaming store to get some!
You can fix the bendy swords with a little heat, and after heat treatment they even harden. I just use a regular lighter, put the part I want above the flame for about a second, it gets even softer and I just pull it by the tip in the direction I want it to be, it quickly cools down and hardens into position. it is easier to pull it than to "bend" it into position.
I've used boiling water a bunch of times - definitely work's on the WizKids line - I managed to completely re-position a Rakdos wing (large model), swords and arms work nicely too. I get them malleable by submerging the part in recently boiled water for maybe 30 - 60 seconds, then, holding the part in the position I want it, dunk it under running cold water at the sink - works a charm.
Bendy stuff on Reaper minis and also on the older pre-painted D&D miniatures also works with heat by dipping into boiling water until you can shape the mini and cool it afterwards under cold water.
Very cool Brent! I watched Jon from Miniature Hobbyist open these up last week but you've gone into a lot more detail with what all the frameworks come with. Very cool to think of all the opportunities this can create for DnD minis
Brent, those are really great minis. I'm looking forward to their release. As usual you make them look specially great. You are correct that there are many terrain crafting vids compared to painting vids, which is why your vids are extra spacial. Keep up the good work
Great review. I'm looking forward to these hitting the market. The PVC D&D minis are just terrible to paint. They are usually too shallow in details and too great in flashing / miscasts.
I picked a dwarf up today and uhhh, yep. Shoulder armor missing a chunk, flash around the shield, and hard to get at flash edges under the arms and across the hair
Eric, I feel your pain. I bought a sorcerer a few months back, mostly out of curiosity given the price. Terrible is the right word! I couldn't even figure out where to start, mould lines or filling in all the holes. I honestly think I could've done a better job building one myself out of green stuff. With my eyes closed!
I actually got into mini painting because of D&D! And now I'm the painter for the whole group lol. It's fun to get to know my friend's characters before I meet them at the table. Our DM certainly doesn't mind having a live-in painter/terrain crafter either. Great review! I was really curious about these when they got announced and I'm happy that they seem worth the money. I love hags so I'm deffo gonna pick her up when she hits my LGS.
Thanks for extolling the love of painting minis for D&D. I started playing and painting in the late 1970s, and now I’ve got my grandson into playing…he’s not into painting….yet :-)
I started playing d&d when I was 16. My 1st dm never used minis or terrain. It was just us, dice, paper, and pencils. It's funny that those are the most vivid memories in my gaming life. Love this review Brent! Cannot wait to try my 1st sprue d&d minis!
I began my painting journey with the old pewter reaper minis for my dnd games back when I was a kid and up until very recently have gotten into some warhammer minis because of channels like yours and miniacs channel
Love this video! I paint minis exclusively to DnD, I don’t play any tabletop game. I started painting my player characters, then as a DM started painting monsters and NPCs, love the hobby!
And here I just finished painting my resin warlock from Heroforge! :D These look cool, though, and much better than the current Nolzur's; if they release all the Modrons as Frameworks minis, I'll jump straight in!
One thing that often works for bendy weapons is super familiar to anyone who has a large Reaper Bones collections, but immerse in hot (nearly boiling) water for about 20-40 seconds (longer for larger models) then pull out with a utensil of some kind (hot water is hot) bend to the right shape and immerse in ice water.
@@GoobertownHobbies Some plastics will return to their "proper" shape just from being heated, some you'll need to hold back into shape until it cools (hence the ice water). I've also heard of a heatgun working better for some plastic but haven't run into any minis that that was required for in my personal experience. If you do have bent minis, try the hot/cold water method and they rebend after a couple of days it might be worth playing around with a heatgun.
I definitely rec looking at reaper bones black & bones USA. They've solved most of the problems with PVC...still no plastic glue, but bendiness is gone and mold lines way easier to clean. Yet, still very durable.
I like everything about these except the price. Personally I find it’s hard enough to get players to pick up minis to begin with, and I think a lot of people will scoff at a price point that starts at $15, especially when 5e can be played with TotM or with digital tabletops. I do think it’s kind of weird how there’s almost no d&d miniature painting on RUclips. Especially when you consider how many of the landmark terrain youtubers got their start doing d&d terrain.
I did too scoff at the price. But let me reassure you: there's plenty of content about painting fantasy minis on the Tube. Channels/painters like Miniac, Ninjon, Mindwinter Minis, Sigmars and about ten other gents and ladies are regularly pushing advanced technical and beginner content on lavis, highlighting, non metallic metals or basing. And i'm not even considering what you can lesrn from the military model hobbyists that publish on RUclips too. Don't wait for the youtube algorithm to recommend you new stuff, do queries !
@@the_arcanum Oh I watch all of those, but none of them base their content in generic fantasy figures. They all focus on the GW product line and intersperse their videos occasionally with other miniatures. I mean more along the lines of seeing a miniature painting channel that doesn't paint 80%+ GW figures.
@@mrmaat I think $5 is low, but I'm Canadian, so my $5 probably isn't your $5. I think $10 is pretty reasonable just because of how many options come with the figure. Thats taking into account that regular Wizkids models already cost around $5 here.
I think it’s a fair price. Marvel Crisis single figures are around that range, and while larger in scale, they also include pricing for licensing and game design, and don’t come with much in the way of customization options. For $15 retail to get a solid figure that will provide options that become bits when not used is a pretty decent price for this market.
I just got a few of the $15 kits and I love them. I like the idea of a a kit that can let you have a basic idea for a character, and the more you get let's you have spare bits to add to later models. I hope that more companies take this idea and run with it
Oh and I TOTALLY am in that population that 3D prints D&D minis. I printed my warlock and my wife's cleric, along with her pets - a starling and a possum - that follow her character around.
@@GoobertownHobbies Yeah I'm subscribed to a few Patreons or similar - The Printing Goes Ever On, One page Rules, and Heroes Infinite - that supply me with STLs I can turn into D&D figures, or use as proxies for my Sisters or Drukhari armies. They also do some that are just too pretty NOT to print and paint up, like the Dark Fairy Tales line of minis that had Snow White and Alice in Wonderland with a big sword and axe that I couldn't NOT print and paint up.
I just started on a mini for a new DnD character, but gosh those look cool, I will still check them out. As any dnd player knows, you can't have enough character ideas (and minis)
Thanks for the video Goobs. I've been waiting for a review of these for a while. I only play D&D and enjoy painting minis for my games. As my painting skills progressed I wanted to paint better models. I looked into AoS minis, but I didn't like what I found. Finally minis for the painting DM's!
Your thoughts about the lack of overlap of DnD players and mini-painting videos is such an interesting and inspiring perspective. I got interested in giving this a try after watching the Mini Primetime show, but I see what you’re saying about content creators focusing on other areas of DnD, and many painters focusing on other games. It could be really fun to figure out a new way to present content specifically overlapping mini painting, 5e, and the growing digital cultural interest in the game. Thank you! Ya got me thinking...
These look really cool! As a scale modeler new to the mini painting hobby, this is right up my alley. I'm glad you talked about a greater focus on D&D minis. I have zero interest in playing Warhammer, which seems to get the lion's share of attention on the RUclips mini painting channels. But I do love fantasy and D&D and have been buying some Reaper Black and Nolzur's models. (The hard plastic Reaper minis are far superior.) Also, those fiddly bits don't seem too bad. Wait until you've built 1/72 tank models, where some parts are literally the size of a pin head!
Love getting a sneak peak at this new line of D&D minis. The customization it offers players is super enticing! D&D was how I got into the hobby, created a metal mini on hero forge, first mini I ever painted. That was over three years ago. 🤘Some of my favorite mini painters on RUclips: The Pickle Jar, Benji’s Hobbies and Elstonation.
Great video as ever! The minis are cool and the customisation options seem pretty good. A little pricey for the monsters for the exact reasons you stated in the video. The most promising thing I think I heard in this video was the lack of embargo or NDA. A positive change that the industry as a whole really need to shift towards. Good PR is sorely needed with some of these companies.
This does look like a cool product. Thanks for this, Brent!. 15 bucks for a single mini is a bit steep to me, but that Orc looks pretty amazing... and I might want that moose antler head for a Nob in my Waaaaagh soooo.... hmmm.
Hopefully this will mean more videos for fantasy/dnd stuff in general. Especially if it brings kitbashing to DnD. Love seeing people doing conversions and stuff with 40k, but would be nice to see that branching out and resulting in cool minis for other things too.
Looking good. You paint very well I must say. These would be ideal if the price is right, and if they have more to follow( a Strahd kit would be nice ). Thank you for previewing them.
Hi Brent, I found this video quite interesting and to see some of the comments others did as well! I have not delved into mini painting like I thought I would when I bought the Jazza Mini painting box. I just do not play D&D these days and I am just not sure about the smaller parts. I am having some dexterity issues just now and I will have to wait a bit before diving in like I wish to do.
Thanks to creators like you I've started painting again and I'm actually considering starting a RUclips channel next year and actually I wanna paint DND Minis lol
I’ve been using frostgrave and Oathmark minis for my games. It’s nice because they are all made to be relatively interchangeable with all the limbs and parts making customizing minis really easy.
Oh, was just catching up on the podcast last night and heard you guys talking about this new range. It got me excited to see it for myself and boom the next morning here's the review. The range is looking pretty nice I have to say. Although I have to say they are a bit late to the party with all the new competition in the mix for d&d minis. I think hero forge is coming out with a new customizer and I've seen quite a few kickstarters for similar things. Interested to see how they do in the long run. Thanks for the video Brent!
The one thing I find with Hero Forge/3D printing in general is those models are super fragile. I've broken 3* as many of those models as pretty much anything else in my collection. Which I've found less of a problem with sprue mini's in general.
@@lordbiscuitthetossable5352 I've noticed that as well. A few of my friends dropped theirs from pretty close to the ground and the hero forge minis shattered into pieces. Hopefully the new updates change things a bit.
I saw that some have mentioned heat for fixing up bent weapons. i go with hot water. Then a dip into chilled water that has been in the freezer for awhile. It is something that can be repeated until the mini is fixed.
Very cool! Depends on the price point for me though, Northstars Frostgrave minis have more options then those currently do. I'm sure with future release though this idea could really take off.
A very cool concept to release RPG characters in plastic with a bunch of options. The only thing that could improve it would be if the weapons were easily magnetized/interchangeable through pegs, to aid you as your character develops.
Framework Minis do look amazing! But I will personally always love the unpainted Wizkids sentiment. There are indeed often bend parts but it takes less than a minute and very low effort to fix them. Wiggle the bend part in hot, almost boiling water, straighten it and put it in cold or running water - fixed. Learned this quite recently, and it has changed my painting life, so I really wanted to share this tip! Happy painting =)
yeah the mold lines on Nolzurs and the bendy weapons are the main reasons I stay with reaper or 3d printing. That and I remember as a young dm going into my store and the aisles upon aisles of reaper minis racked to the ceiling, and flipping through them to find something appropriate. Sadly there isn't something like that where I live now.
Wow! Thanks! I didn’t know about these. I cut my teeth on D&D Wizkids models. Just got board of them as I like to assemble models as well. This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you! 😀👍
I totally agree with you that dnd miniature painting does not get enough love both on RUclips and by WizKids. I am relatively new to dnd and dming, as well as miniature painting. I am currently working on a project to build a collection of minis to run Curse of Strahd. I have been relying a lot on 3D prints because I either can’t find what I need from official dnd channels or the sculpts and variety of poses are not to my liking. I’m hoping WizKids finally realize that there is a market out there that has huge potential for them.
Yeah! I think there's a goldmine here for good/customizable rpg minis. I'm optimistic about us getting some great new options in the coming years... we'll see! :-)
Enjoyed the video Brent, my favorite paint jobs were the Orc and the Night Hag. Hags being one of my favorite (possibly my #1 favorite) monster, I will definitely be picking up one of those. Regarding the bendy weapons, I've had good luck with immersing the mini in very hot water, then immediately in Ice water. It doesn't change the fact that they are still not as nice as polystyrene models, but it's worth a shot if there's one you really like but that suffers from noodle sword.
Good video; it was fun to seeing you these characters to life in such vibrant color. The miniature sculpts do look good - but the price point seems a bit high, honestly. Check out Reaper's black line - which is much improved version of their previous bones line. (No customization offered of course). Frost grave's line of miniatures are plastic/ on frame - and offer a lot of customization, plus good detail. (I've used them for rpgs.)
I've painted my minis since 1980, starting with Testors Model paints on lead. I LOVE playing D&D with minis! If I had the voice and time for it, I'd start a channel for both...
I'm expecting a wide release so you'll be able to get your hands on them eventually. Hopefully you find some models that look like your characters!! :-)
Glad to see that Wizkids has finally made the foray into hard plastic minis. The Nolzur's minis are okay and good for entry level, but lack finesse and customization options. This was a great video. 👍
I can't love this enough. I'm happy to finally see d&d do this! Plus the mass conversion between all the world's because of material... huh.... yeah.........

The strength of that line is the monster minis and terrain pieces. I am not a fan of the character minis.
Nice! You're a good friend to paint all those minis :-)
Great video! I really like how your hag turned out. Cool minies to! Might have to look for them at my LGS
I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel; you've inspired me to pick up mini painting as a hobby, and play D&D with them!
I began my painting journey with the old pewter reaper minis for my dnd games back when I was a kid and up until very recently have gotten into some warhammer minis because of channels like yours and miniacs channel
You can fix bendy weapons by dipping them in hot water or using a hair dryer, the dipping them in cold water while straightening the part.
Amazing video man! Very much looking forward to these! ...and THE STAGE!
Love this video!
I paint minis exclusively to DnD, I don’t play any tabletop game. I started painting my player characters, then as a DM started painting monsters and NPCs, love the hobby!
Brent, these look epic. What a great product as a mini painter and DND player!
Very interested in the PC mins. Thanks for this video Brent! Great review!
Splendid way to get in to it. Good job sir! Knep The brush wet!
And here I just finished painting my resin warlock from Heroforge! :D These look cool, though, and much better than the current Nolzur's; if they release all the Modrons as Frameworks minis, I'll jump straight in!
This seems really well thought out. Cannot wait to get my hands on them
One thing that often works for bendy weapons is super familiar to anyone who has a large Reaper Bones collections, but immerse in hot (nearly boiling) water for about 20-40 seconds (longer for larger models) then pull out with a utensil of some kind (hot water is hot) bend to the right shape and immerse in ice water.
I'll give it a shot! :-)
I've got a few reaper black minis around here, I should really give them a chance one of these days :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies Try the Bones USA line. It’s not a PVC material but a thermoplastic resin and paints up fantastic.
can't wait to pick some up ..been looking for them on line.. Thanks for the cool video!
The price point is insulting. A fair price would be $4-5 USD for a small frame.
Great models..and awesome paint job!
I just got a few of the $15 kits and I love them. I like the idea of a a kit that can let you have a basic idea for a character, and the more you get let's you have spare bits to add to later models. I hope that more companies take this idea and run with it
Those look really cool! Glad to see you posting again also. :-)
Oh and I TOTALLY am in that population that 3D prints D&D minis. I printed my warlock and my wife's cleric, along with her pets - a starling and a possum - that follow her character around.
@@lukehill9934 3d printing is a lot of fun, I'm using it for one of my games right now. :-)
Great video again! That hag looks awesome btw.
This is so rad, I cant wait to get my hands on some of these miniatures!
Great thing I’ve actually just started playing DnD with my friends, I’ll look out for these! Not only that I’ve been lookin for some minis to paint
Nice! I wish you long fun campaign full of laughs :-)
🤘Some of my favorite mini painters on RUclips: The Pickle Jar, Benji’s Hobbies and Elstonation.
i love the end presentation on the online gameboard!
Totally agree :-)
Nice I can see some awesome conversions in the future and was that a nail file you used to remove the mold lines
That was a "sanding stick" from durasand, but you can absolutely use a nail file.
This does look like a cool product. Thanks for this, Brent!. 15 bucks for a single mini is a bit steep to me, but that Orc looks pretty amazing... and I might want that moose antler head for a Nob in my Waaaaagh soooo.... hmmm.
YES I'VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THESE!
Hopefully this will mean more videos for fantasy/dnd stuff in general. Especially if it brings kitbashing to DnD. Love seeing people doing conversions and stuff with 40k, but would be nice to see that branching out and resulting in cool minis for other things too.
Totally agree :-)
Looking good. You paint very well I must say.
These would be ideal if the price is right, and if they have more to follow( a Strahd kit would be nice ). Thank you for previewing them.
Hi Brent, I found this video quite interesting and to see some of the comments others did as well! I have not delved into mini painting like I thought I would when I bought the Jazza Mini painting box. I just do not play D&D these days and I am just not sure about the smaller parts. I am having some dexterity issues just now and I will have to wait a bit before diving in like I wish to do.
Thanks for another great video, Brent!
Ooooo, this is a exciting! Great video Brent, love to see this.
we live in exciting times :-)
Thanks to creators like you I've started painting again and I'm actually considering starting a RUclips channel next year and actually I wanna paint DND Minis lol
That makes me really happy! Keep on painting, my friend :-)
very stoked about this line of minis coming out
I’ve been using frostgrave and Oathmark minis for my games. It’s nice because they are all made to be relatively interchangeable with all the limbs and parts making customizing minis really easy.
I am legit stoked about this!
This is awesome Brent. As someone who is slowly migrating back to a tabletop game, I need to look for these.
Good to see you back again brother!👍
Another really useful video. Nice review, thanks.
I like that they give us extra options, the leftover bits are perfect for kitbashes.
I just got started painting mini's back in oct 2021 and gotta say i'm addicted
Oh, was just catching up on the podcast last night and heard you guys talking about this new range. It got me excited to see it for myself and boom the next morning here's the review. The range is looking pretty nice I have to say. Although I have to say they are a bit late to the party with all the new competition in the mix for d&d minis. I think hero forge is coming out with a new customizer and I've seen quite a few kickstarters for similar things.
Interested to see how they do in the long run. Thanks for the video Brent!
Hehehe, I've got an upcoming project on heroforge too! :-)
Well neat and about time.
Definitely into this and more painting.
Thanks
I still don't understand how anyone can give the nicest guy on the planet a thumbs down...🤔
I saw that some have mentioned heat for fixing up bent weapons. i go with hot water. Then a dip into chilled water that has been in the freezer for awhile. It is something that can be repeated until the mini is fixed.
Thanks, I'll give it a shot! :-)
Thank you! 😀👍
Right on! I'm excited to see what kind of selection my local store ends up with. :-)
I'm optimistic about us getting some great new options in the coming years... we'll see! :-)
Very cool models. $25 a monster is a little steep for me as a DM but maybe they'll be fun conversion bits for other games too!
Wow! I can't wait to get my hand on theses!
Thanks! And yeah, I should set aside a bit of time and try to de-noodle some of these swords :-)
SUPER excited for some of these! I do print of most my stuff, but more options is always nice.
exactly!
I've bought 2 3d printers exclusively for D&D minis. Though there is not many painting on RUclips, there are many patreons that cater to the hobby
Very true! I've had a printer running all week for a DnD game I'm playing in :-)
Big fan of the old Reaper models. The new Reaper Bones are great for getting lots of cheap monsters and pc's, but as you said, they bend and droop.
Most of the new Reaper releases are in harder plastic now.
Oh I'll definitely be picking up a couple of these once they're out! 👍
Hehehe, I've got a stash of testors myself :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies i still have those First minis I painted. :-)
I still have all my lead minis from the late 80’s and I also only used testors paints and makeup brushes my mom didn’t need. The good ole days, lol
I'm pretty excited for these minis- So far I have been resorting to modelling, printing them and painting them myself 🙃
Hopefully they get released in South Africa?
I'm expecting a wide release so you'll be able to get your hands on them eventually. Hopefully you find some models that look like your characters!! :-)
Glad to see that Wizkids has finally made the foray into hard plastic minis. The Nolzur's minis are okay and good for entry level, but lack finesse and customization options. This was a great video. 👍
I can't love this enough. I'm happy to finally see d&d do this! Plus the mass conversion between all the world's because of material... huh.... yeah.........
