Hubbardville Store is a tale as old as time about injustice, and a young man’s revenge. In America from early in the 20th century local general stores and company stores had ungodly amounts of power and were often corrupt and exploitive. These stores often gave out large lines of credit and sold products 10x over retail. This ensured the family would never be able to pay the debt. Hubbardville ain’t a real town, but I’m sure this story took place in every state in the Southeast at some point.
This story is particularly personal for me because my one side of my family lived in Brilliant, AL and was beholden to the coal mine company store and the other side ran a general store in Muhlenberg County, KY. The rich history of the stores and their power shaped the lineage of my family and influenced the people who raised me.
This tune was originally written by Larry Murray but the version I fell in love with is from Jim Ringer. Jim Ringer is an obscure singer from the 70’s folk era. He has been a huge inspiration on my life and is easily in my top 20 of influences. Go give him a listen. -Benjamin Tod

Lyrics:
Well, it looked like rain when we laid Papa down
But he sure looked good in that suit of brown
From The Hubbardville Store
A small gray stone and a box of pine and
Two red roses tied with twine
From The Hubbardville Store
Dust to dust who could ask for more
It stood like a ghost on the paved highway
They'd come in their cars and tell us to pay
The Hubbardville Store
I was just a kid and I couldn't plow ground
And Mama would cry when the man came around
From The Hubbardville Store
Look yonder Mama, here come hard times
Well, Mama was weak but her pride was strong
She said we'd pay before too long
The Hubbardville Store
But Mama knew better I could see it in her eyes
Cause if money was meat we couldn't draw flies
From The Hubbardville Store
Look out Mama, here comes the man
They took our house and they took our land
They took everything but the clothes in our hands
The Hubbardville Store
And I swore to God I'd do 'em all in
But Mama cried Son, don't you turn to sin
For that Hubbardville Store
Look out now, you hold on, boy
Well, I felt like a man on that moonless night
With a steady hand and one match
To light The Hubbardville Store
And the people came a-running from miles around
They hid their smiles while it burned to the ground
The Hubbardville Store
Well, come on down who could ask for more
Well, they gave me ten years but they ain't built it back
Cause I burnt everything right down to the sacks
At The Hubbardville Store
Dust to dust who could ask for more
The sky's on fire from The Hubbardville Store
Look yonder Mama, could you ask for more

Benjamin Todd entering his villian era and dropping a murder ballad is the The best thing that could have happened to me on this random Tuesday!
Come a long ways since the BNSF Great Northern Line🙌
It's an old standard, and he did mention on Instagram that a honkytonk album and an old standards album were in the works to come out after the latest Lost Dog drops. I expect we will be hearing more stuff like this
The only artist I hit the like button for before I even watch the video and hear the song. We already know it’s gonna be 🔥.
Benjamin Tod and the Lost dog crew is finally getting the recognition they deserve. I truly feel like Ben is one of the best song writers and cover singers of this generation. I am looking forward to everything coming from this man!
Watching you guys forever...busking, etc. you guys are the real deal!!!! Much success to this kind of Awesome music...the real deal!!!
Y’all can do no wrong !!!
Every song is just right on !!!!
Im stoked this band is finally getting recognition but its ashame that the more traditional country sound is what did that, their folk stuff is absolutely amazing.
ughh these southern songs call to my northern soul. ♡
So well stated. Couldn't agree more.
I feel like a blonde white girl when Taylor swift realeasss a new album
Need a cigar with that suit.
I fucking love this songs ending. JUSTICE.

This is album is so f****n strong can’t wait for it to drop
The way he said “I swore to god I’ll do em all in” but momma cried “son, don’t turn to sin” 😮💨
Amen, for the mothers that check sin.
his writing is top notch
His writing is amazing, but this is a cover.
It make me think of Steve Earle a bit. Come to Sweden! ❤
I love this song so much! means the world to me!
Just heard this song on Sirius XM. Had to hear it again. Great stuff
This album will go to the top! Love the music, the show and the band members. This Lost Dog is hunting and will be one heck of a beast to reckon with in 2024.

This and a new Charley Crocket record in the same month!? Let’s go!
Don't we get a new Charley album every month? 😂
Only influenced millennials yell out "let's go".
Ben's gone next level! This is fire 🚒🔥!
This will be my album of the year. I’ve never been so confident, so early in the year, but sheesh…
The man delivers time and time again great songs on which your soul needs healin' on.
Keep on coming
Thank you Sir for another amazing song❤ we just saw them live in Rochester NY on the 24th. Absolutely beautiful! I recently lost my father and your music helps the hurt.
My favorite and I can't stop listening to his songs🎵, how long have you been listening to this great artiste?

That doesn't make sense
lol wat?
Calm down hes anticipating
@@dakotafigel356 to everyone he knows tho
😂😂😂😅
It will always blow my mind that your music doesnt get 100+ million views. The way I see it, you are the best modern songwriter.
It wouldn't be as special as it was. Appreciate it before it is.
One of the best voices to ever exist in human history. Period.
I own every song I can get my hands on from them. Lost dog street band and Benjamin Tod helped me threw my darkest times.
I don't know if I'm the only fan from Romania, but I'm sure ass hell I'm the biggest !
Just saw 'em live in DC; The folks are absolutely killin it on the road!
Oh man, that fiddle. Ashley Mae--absolutely beautiful. 💗 Love this song!
It sure looks like the video budget has increased 🤣
I'm happy you guys are picking up steam and finally getting the popularity that you deserve. Keep up the good work!
That was my first thought too, I just hope they stay humble and sing for the people who have supported them for years
Counting the days till the Rochester show 😊
Right with ya on the Asheville show! Got my ticket 5 months in advance, apparently not long before it sold out 😮
I love this band. The violin is my favorite. She knows her stuff.
Directed by tarantino vibes. Awesome song!!
This album, will be peak Benjamin Tod. Been here since before lost dog. Nobody has ever made busking “main stream” until they did. 4 years from now this will be a “new” genre. Thank you Mr. Tod
Great show in Burlington, VT Ben!!

But when I was roamin your music brought me back home! Hope to catch a show again it's been too long!! 👍🤙🤘
Another fantastic song/video. The evolution of LDSB has been a joy to experience, I can't wait for this album.
After years of being a fan I'm proud to say that I FINALLY hear you in the bars around my town all the time.
I just don't quite think you get it like Benjamin Tod gets it.....country music treasure this day in age! My hats off....
The Mansville store and the Raywick store did the same from what I'm told. Hell, Green County screws ya bad enough on just water, Greensburg might as well be a general store all on its own Haha
A good way to wake up with some new Lost Dog!
Another banger from the best in country an western an you're cleaned up fighting the good fight you're an inspiration to millions keep on keeping on stay off the hard stuff 💪 LDSB strong
Oh man I need a lost dog Pappy collaboration
Great song and killer video.
Thanks, y'all 🙏🏻🤍
favorite song
Your best work to DATE! This is insanely bad ass.
May 4th cannot get here fast enough.
Dam they boosted the quality of the recordings and music videos so much ❤️ nice to see the world's giving back to your skills
Yee yeeeee
I love everything Ben has ever done .he the best singer an pucker IV ever heard his music is from the heart .
This is 🔥🔥🔥
There is not enough company store songs in existence and this is by far the greatest. From wooden nickels to fiat, the wisdom & righteous indignation generations of our people have felt based off how these people operated to take advantage of & suck us dry which have only expanded their operations into the major corporations which hoard over us all today. This masterpiece is priceless for an ol’ hillbilly like me. Standing ovation Ben, you’ve been in my speakers for many years, but this one 🔥
Great song
Can't wait to see yall live in Ohio!
Love ya my brother
This is hype.
So glad that you recognized that you have more LDSB in you. You were right, these are Lost Dog songs. The time and effort you all have put into this album is evident, and you've done it your way!
I dunno, this man's songs helped me through hard hard times, but there's just something here that doesn't have the same soul, sound, and flow. Might just be me, but I just don't hear it in their newer stuff.
Love the country twang to this track;
Looked like rain when they laid Bobba down!!
Ah, he says “papa” there. :)
@@b.w.22 bobba!
He actually says Bobba. Not papa
I asked him myself
@@brianfry1312 - Well, I stand corrected! He’s always had funny pronunciations for words, but I figured they were just improvisations on the lyric made in the moment. I’ve definitely not heard “bobba” before, well not exactly, and I live in West Virginia! Must be a Kentucky thing.
Just saw them perform live for the first time on Saturday. It was absolutely amazing. The vibes and the music spoke straight to my soul.
damn good ! thanks for this awesome song
WHOOOT!
Benjamin Tod is the most legit bad ass in music today, hands down.
This is amazing
The man, the myth, the legend.
This album, will be peak Benjamin Tod. Been here since before lost dog. Nobody has ever made busking “main stream” until they did. 4 years from now this will be a “new” genre. Thank you Mr. Benjamin. Back when he bumped his gums to trace adkins on the streets of music row as nothing more than a bum playing REAL music in the side of the road.
One of my favorite tunes you've ever released man. Good to see you're getting recognition.
Hard times a comin…
Another great video. Thanks for making music like this.
Another great song from this album.
Looking forward to seeing them in D.C. next month
Same. Been waiting since they canceled last time. This band changed my life.
Will see you in Charleston, second time. Can’t wait!
Over here in Germany just waiting for the day for y'all to come over. Ill be in front row, love your songs since day 1 keep up the great work!!!!
Fastest thumbs up I ever gave. That opening line and then all the ones after it were so good.
Love it. GREAT video. Cannot wait to hear/see what comes next.
been listening for years and benjamin keeps getting better!
Good shit
🔥
This man was born to sing.
I kinda got exposed to this music during my opiate years and in a weird shining type way i feel alittle extra connected to the obvious ups and downs of all the music ive heard coming outta this corner in the years since. im always a fan of the old stuff and acoustic like anyone else but this aint too bad for a fancy studio album. nice work folks
Hell yeah. I'm loving this song. Can't wait to see you guys again in Asheville on May 10th.
Love the new song. I have been a long time fan. Central Alabama in Shelby County come see us. Shelby County is country and safer to travel to Birmingham sucks and is dangerous
Damn this video is at a new level
Congrats on the new level of success. You guys deserve it more than most
Hope you been doing alright brother. Love from Arkansas ❤️
They so need to play there soon
@@andthenhedead6076 I’d love it so freaking much! You from this way?
!WOOHOO!
Prime country song and killer video!
Wow, these guys don’t miss!! Can’t wait to see them in Detroit
This is the mark of a new chapter
Benjamin's going for the gold... I still wanna see the acoustic version... Keep up the good work
