I would use root trainers which allow the roots to grow without restriction until transplant time. An agricultural consultant found that most transplants work worse than just put the seed into the soil. Shock during the first 25 dys harms the plant.

I've heard that you're supposed to gently pull it out by the leaves- the stem is too delicate???

I found that when I don't pack the mix sinks down and then the seedling has little room to grow in.

its just a starter. if the plant dont grow then the soil microbes dont get sugar. once it goes into a bed then there will be an already established set of microbes waiting. plants grown from seeds collected from plants that have adapted back to living in co-operation with soil microbes have the epigenetics to co-operate with soil microbes. once a lineage is 3 generations removed from soil ecology it takes 3 generations to relearn the tactics for co-operation with the soil life

The nitrogen found in fertilizers are crucial to maintaining the microorganism’s C:N ratio in order for them to be most active. Whether or not that nitrogen comes from an organic or inorganic source, processes within the soil convert it to either nitrate or ammonia. These are both forms that the plant can use.
