Listening to him is educational, encouraging and if I’m feeling a bit lonely, he cheers me up. Give this guy a tv show. It would be a hit. I think he has a “kind” heart and it comes through. Thanks for being “self-sufficient me.”
@Cassandra only sprinkle fine soil on top of the seedlings. If you're planting too deep don't make finger holes like Mark did in the video. You'll plant them even deeper if you have issues with that now. Just fill your pot with soil. Soak seeds in water for a few hours. Water the soil in the pot first. Drain seeds from water and rest them on top of the soil in the pot. Place some fine potting mix over the seedlings. You only need about a half an inch of loose fine soil over seedlings. I then use a spray bottle to mist water on the top of the soil. Just moisten it to set it. Mist seedlings with the spray bottle. Never water directly onto seedlings. They are delicate. Hope this helps 🙏 ☺ 😉

After binge watching this type of videos for maybe 7-8 months I have started growing some veggies in my flat. No balcony, just on the window in long deep pots. I have a constant supply of big cucumbers, lots of spices like basil, thyme, mint and dill, then I have romaine lettuce which I keep on cutting the big leafs from and use in lettuce, kale , an avocado and also lavender because I heard it smells amazing fresh 😬. I have to say when I started it everyone around me kept saying I'll fail from day 1 , so don't give up 😋 if you start a small garden on your window
Why has it taken me so long to find you. Hahha. Amazing content. Watched heaps of you today. Got sick of my usual love of tiktok gardeners mostly from US. Wrong seasons for us Aussies. And I'm new to it all. So now can watch you. Love the grass roots approach. That's no frills. Use what ya got. I love it. Jol gold coast
Feels like the dad/gramps I was never able to learn this from. I've had a severe punch in the gut screaming at me to start a garden lately. Thank you so much for all of your wisdom. I love your channel. I'm usually too lazy to give any thumbs ups even for my favorite youtubers but man, you really give that extra special touch 😅
Your video post timings are perfect for my 5am Pacific Northwest morning cup of coffee. Inspires me to crack on with the day in the garden. We are installing a lot of honeybee swarms in logs right now. Life is buzzing in the garden. Cheers mate.
Hi mark, I'm from Perth Western Australia , it's so good to have an Aussie to get info from, in such a big country, it's amazing how few people from Australia post on RUclips, love your work
You got a thumbs up just for that "growing thumbs up" move at the end. Sending lots of love from Canada Mark. Keep being you and I'll keep enjoying your work.
I have a big garden in Canada. We don’t have a very good climate here but this year we had a high of 41C the first thing I thought of was “that’s as hot as Marks garden”
To add to #5, when you thin out the extra seedlings from a cell, instead of pulling out the extra ones, use a small pair of scissors to trim the unwanted plants off at the soil level so that you don't disturb the soil for the healthy one you want to remain. Also the roots from the unwanted seedlings will break down and become nutrients for the remaining seedling.
Since I first watched this channel, I have become a seriously avid gardener. I grew up on a 1/4 acre block in Adelaide and we never went hungry for fresh food - we had a nectarine tree, million dollar peach, apricot, loquat, navel orange, valencia orange, grapefruit, four almond trees down the back behind the shed in the chicken run - and the old man had his market garden. We helped mum cut up the beans to jar up, help make the tomato sauce and chutney, slice up the peaches and apricots for the Fowlers Vacola preserving outfit, not to mention the jams, all stored in our little cellar under the kitchen floorboards. Lost the knack over the years but now my hands are never clean of good old mother nature's soil. This channel should be compulsory viewing for young kids today. They might learn that there Ardmore wholesome things to eat than sloppy hamburgers with artificial sauce.
Mr Mark has been so... inspirational for me to keep pursuing my dream. Without him I wouldn't be where I'm at today.A big cheers to you with mighty blessings for you, family and fellow self sufficient gardeners!!!!!!
I've been catching your channel for a while now and your so inspiring even though we are in different climates and grow different veg, you have taught me so much so thank you buddy.
I can't bear getting rid of seedlings so I plant them out underneath my pine trees (not the best soil and a lot of shade) thinking if they don't make it, at least they will feed the soil. Well, I did that to a couple of kale seedlings and now I have full blown kale plants in between my pine trees 🤣
Hello from Texas, Mark! I just found you here on RUclips. I’m pretty new to gardening and have been hunting a channel that’s informative, and not boring to watch. You are excellent at keeping my attention while feeding my brain with extremely important information. I wish I had found you before my spring gardening began, but it’s never too late to learn for next planting. I see you’ve been here for 9 yrs, so I have tons to watch! Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your experience with us.
I wasn’t going to grow a veggie garden this year… then I binged your channel over the holidays. I’ve ordered a raised bed which will be delivered this month.. I’ve procrastinated starting seeds but I believe I’m going to have to get started on that tomorrow. Thanks Mark for the inspiration and the bounty of your knowledge. Good growing to you!
Thanks for the video Mark! Its our second year growing veg here in the UK, last year we were blessed with a magnificent early summer and all our seedlings flourished. This year, the late frosts have harmed so many of the seedlings, which we've found out the hard way!!
You are such a positive influence! Cheerful and optimistic, your videos are like cosy security blankets. I appreciate your comments about politicians, the bane of our lives. I'm now starting a food garden with 2 other people...learning from you whilst taking into account our colder climate. Thanks so much, Julie in the UK
I’m so glad I found your channel! I have been into gardening forever and not many people approach it in a fun way, you do. Btw I’m in the US and I’m going to start using “in the main” in sentences as much as possible.
I received a seed raising kit and greenhouse for Christmas. Found this channel and won’t be looking anywhere else for my gardening advice. Practical, educational, explains things in a manner that is easy for people of all skill levels to understand. Subscribed to the channel as soon as this video finished. Thank you so muc
I live in Florida, USA and I really enjoy your channel and content. It looks like we have similar weather and temperature conditions. Thank you for all the videos, your channel has encouraged me and my wife to start our own garden.
Thanks again! Your guidance is always clear & practical. I wish my Dad was still around, he would be so happy to watch you! He had a green thumb gift- just would break off a piece of plant, stick it right in the ground, walk away...presto! In a couple weeks there's a whole new plant! Never saw anything like it. Love your advice & attitude.
I agree Mark, is worth the money to buy good soil for seeds, they are like our kids, they need the best start in life that you can give them. I bought 2 40 litre cheap multi-purpose compost but you get what you pay for, it was absolute rubbish so guess I will just dress my lawn with it.
Hi Mark. Thank you. I grew spaghetti squash in Sydney in spring and summer. Two plants. About ten fruits. Easy. Slice length ways. Put face down in baking pan with cup of water. Bake. When knife goes thru skin easily is done. Use fork to scrap out. Needs flavour added
I enjoy your videos to the point to where I watch videos about stuff I already know. Great stuff. I love growing my own stuff. My wife was skeptical and had no interest, but now every morning she has to go around and look at all the plants hahaha. I think I have converted her to a gardening enthusiast.
I can tell there was a lot of preparation done in the making of this. I greatly appreciate the detailed information and effort. You are an inspirational educator 👍
I always had problems with mold, no matter how expensive the seed rising soil or how careful I was. I now put my seed raising soil in the microwave or in the oven for a bit, heat it and then let it cool and it works just like a charm. When they are a bit bigger I add a bit of root booster to make up for what I killed with the heat.
New to this channel. Was lookkng for information to grow my own vegetable garden with the way the world is going. I have to say not only did it get me super motivated, its also super entertaining. Thank for all you do from one military guy to the other.
Oh I have been binge watching 👀 lol. Its so entertaining even for an old gardener like myself. These videos are like chips. Can't have just one😉 I do wish I could grow all he does but I'm in the northern hemisphere and darn near the whole other side of the planet lol But I'm sure there are a few things we grow that won't do as well in the heat.
This year I’m only using peat moss to grow my seeds. Here in Northern California we have a lot of fungus spores in the air from the ocean breeze carrying it over so any material that has nutrients in it will impact the seeds negatively. Then I use a seaweed liquid fertilizer and feed them when they have sprouted 2 leaves. I keep them in their containers until temperatures outside is above 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the evenings. That’s when I transfer them out. I totally understand what you mean about those sneaky freezes in Spring. So I have learned to wait until May to transplant them. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Hi mate I love your channel. I want to share my experience. I live in the Philippines, temp 30C (86F) all year round, so this might be irrelevant to many of your viewers, but here goes. I was SOOO disheartened that my seeds never came up; I planted them in coco-peat and perlite, with a spot of vermicompost and left them under the bathroom sink, fairly shaded. Nothing came up at all. Ever. Yet most of my seeds direct in the ground germinated. Last week I said to my wife that I was going to plant the seeds then just leave them outside in starter pots. Within 24 hours I had 95% plus germination of radishes and carrots. I think that direct sunlight is ok for germination - it sure surprised me,
I live in the north of England and we can get some late frosts. I can cover some of my plants but not all. I tend to sow anything I know I might need to delay planting out into a small pot rather than a seed tray. Then I can put compost at the bottom with a layer of seed medium at the top. If I need to leave them longer before planting out, I know the young plants have the nutrients from the compost.
Another good point is to soak those seeds first then place in soil. I use soil from the previous year to raise seedlings. They come up in about 2 days. Maybe 3.
I was very enthusiastic and purchased a bunch of vegetable seeds and planned on coming home and getting started. After watching this video, I now know that there is a planting schedule. Thank you for the education!
After listening I just sorted out some kale seedlings that were abit crowded and were not doing very well. Hope it will help them grow more healthier and stronger .thanks Mark ❤.
Hi Mark from zone 7b in Sweden! Just wanted to say how much my husband and I love your show. We've learned so much and have taken inspiration for our first 'proper' grown up garden! My husband built tall raised beds, complete with a fence to keep the deer out 🙂 We love your set up and your crowd growing technique. We're having lots of fun, quality time together out in the garden and look forward to watching your latest episode 😃.

Glad even with all your experience you still just use an old screwdriver to make a hole and dib in! Some good tips here, learning is doing! I find the little greenhouses help indoors to stop the heating drying the seeds out when it is too cold to propogate them outside.
the term - transplanting - just got a new definition for me. thx! 1 more tip: LOVE and attention. Plants love that. I usually talk to them a bit when checking on them
I love watching your videos. I've been working in a flower shop for the last 9 and a half years now. But I only started planting and sowing about 1 year ago. And after I found your videos I started to really get in to it. So Thank you for the many amazing videos you have. They really inspire me to get into it😊😁😉
Hey Mark, makes sense. I live in a cold climate, Medlow Bath Blue Mountains. I grow what I can. I do a similar method. Thanks for your support and tips
In the northern hemisphere it's Edamame planting season :) I just plant mine in medium-sized pots and they grow to their full height. I can also space them appropriately to avoid spreading diseases fro one to another.
I've just subscribed. I've been up most of the night watching backlog and trying to get up to speed. Haven't done much gardening in the past, rectifying that now. Bunnings love me.

The amount of time and effort you put into your gardening AND your filming is out of this world! You put a lot of full-time youtubers to shame.

"Don't feel bad about murdering some of them.." I just love this channel so much!
Haha, he totally gets my feelings about thinning. I feel like I am murdering this beautiful creation and I'm a horrible person for doing it.
That was weird. I was scrolling and read it at the same time Mark said it 😳
I was looking for this comment as soon as he said this
Genuinely made me laugh out loud
It was so relatable because I always feel bad when thinning out my seedlings!
The king! Big thanks from Sydney

Glad even with all your experience you still just use an old screwdriver to make a hole and dib in! Some good tips here, learning is doing! I find the little greenhouses help indoors to stop the heating drying the seeds out when it is too cold to propogate them outside.
Good video again mate!
Keep up the good work and hope that you are about to get a bumper season this year.
the term - transplanting - just got a new definition for me.
They really inspire me to get into it😊😁😉
HI Mark from France i have subscribe 2 years now and just love thé way you share your tips. 😊👍👍🥬🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
Hey Mark, makes sense. I live in a cold climate, Medlow Bath Blue Mountains.
I grow what I can. I do a similar method.
Thanks for your support and tips
Love the dibber/screwdriver tip! You’re one of my ‘go-to’ gardeners. Thanks so much!
In the northern hemisphere it's Edamame planting season :) I just plant mine in medium-sized pots and they grow to their full height. I can also space them appropriately to avoid spreading diseases fro one to another.
I love ur silly jokes! :) keep it up! i really appreciate your work, and the lessons you have been teaching us.! :) thank you
I've just subscribed. I've been up most of the night watching backlog and trying to get up to speed. Haven't done much gardening in the past, rectifying that now. Bunnings love me.
Mate, Just want to say thanks for all your videos. I've been completely hooked for some time now, you're an absolute legend and I mean that but... I live in the north of Scotland and you've got me dreaming about dragon fruit and tropicalniss never the less my tattie yield would blow you to Tazmania brother!!! Cheers Ma Bro
Beauty Beets & Beet Greens....my Favorite!!
So incredibly helpful! I really needed this info after so many lackluster results. Thank you for your impeccable videos!
Thank you for this topic. Seeding in little pots has been the hardest part of gardening for me.
Your channel has helped a lot being in the southern hemisphere (I'm in Chile- not quite as warm and definitely not as humid as you though!)
