Never realised I was here for this night. 😂 I was 5 years old & my folks took me to see Underworld instead, off the back of Trainspotting using Born Slippy for the soundtrack that year.
I remember a review said Ian Brown sounded like a homeless man shouting into a bucket. I saw the gig and I didn't think it was that bad, but then again, I was bongoed on E.
It was so good, I love all the unsung heroes of the roses, the likes of Pete garner, Andy Couzens, Robbie maddix, Nigel ipinson, Aziz Ibrahim, Rob Hampson and of course Simon Wolstencroft.
Oh sweet Jesus. When he starts signing you can just sense the confidence oozing out of him, the band and every single person there. So much pressure and so much riding on this.
Agreed man, serious pressure involved here. I've seen the Roses and Brownie live and both times his voice was mint. His confidence (though you'd never guess it until he opens his mouth..) was being drowned out by loud guitars for a while at that stage..I still love them all, gloriously chaotic!
The gig that killed (what was left of) the band, but the absolute utter chaos that surrounded the Roses' has always been a huge part of their appeal and story
I was there and remember the Melody Maker review afterwards. "Mani played the first 16 bars and all was well with the world then Ian Brown opened his mouth and every dog in a 5 mile radius started howling". A performance that could be described as dogshite at best.
I was there too loads were leaving after first 2 songs and going over to melody maker tent to watch Underworld. Sonic Youth were miles better just before the roses. You can hear brownie say either just after adored or second song "put that flag down don't want to see it "a union Jack with stone roses on it ,that was my mate at the time Neil Jarrett he lowered the flag and never got it back. That was pretty much all brownie said all night. It's on you tube somewhere
This is MESMERISINGLY bad! Cant stop watching it. Slow motion car crash. You couldnt deliberately sing worse. Nice one for archiving what has become a byword for a bad gig!
I remember Ian saying in an interview, when asked by Tony Wilson why people rip on his voice, that he did the Reading Festival in 96 and is was shockingly atrocious
His solo stuff is excellent... Solarized, My Way, Monkey Business etc.... Love the latest single too, musically and lyrically . Gets my respect for standing up and speaking out - Browny can always hold his head up high even though his singing is ahem... 'Slightly' off here!
The band were on their last legs and would have likely broken up not too long after this anyway. They had already lost two irreplacable musicians in Squire and Reni. I mean, this is basically just the Roses in name only. The fact this performance was so bad was simply the straw that broke the camel's back.
Mani and Aziz Ownguitar tried their best, but fuck me it is appalling. I was so off me tits I loved it at the time. The whizz must have been fucking phenomenal.
no need for shaggy to start shouting stuff on keyboards.this was the original death of the band.but any proper roses fan knows they were better and meant so much more to people.220,000 people cant b wrong
And don't forget that all the "likes" are just people who like seeing proof Ian Brown was utter shite. This is so bad it's hard to understand why someone didn't just pull the plug on the power to save face and claim there was a massive power outage. Guess the tech crew and his management don't really like Ian either?
I've seen Ian live and Tbf he didn't sound any better than this. I'm going on Friday and I'm looking forward to it, I am a little anxious though, that it might sound like this.
@antunivanovic Ha, at 0:37 if someone told me that was Liam Gallagher I would have no reason not to believe them. Come on boys, avenge this performance at Heaton Park, going to be mega
apparently people in the crowd didn't think it was so bad? who knows? aziz is a good guitarist though, don't knock him, check brown's solo stuff! and to all the doubters - they fucking smashed it at heaton park and if you can catch them on their current tour they will shut you up!!!
Ian said he didn't go to bed the night before and was on the piss with his old pal Cressa. Ian doesn't normally drink. He admits it was a stupid thing to do. Plus, yeah, that guitarist is a poor replacement for John.
I was down at the front for this. I'd seen them at Sheffield late '95 and they were great. First couple of tracks, obviously everyone is singing along...so you can't actually hear the singer...then, suddenly, it's...wait...what's that awful droning noise...? Slowly made my way away from the front...and things actually got worse from then on...
This is why Auto Tuners were invented!! Saw them at Spike Island the sound their was appalling but that was down too the organizers (tiny PA swinging in the wind) Lets face it this isnt The Stone Roses is it! I will be at Heaton park on Suinday I would not want to be the sound engineer, if it sounds shite i think they will be lynched!!!
I was there that evening. Perhaps it was the hype of watching a band that was such an influence in my life in high school...but i remember it being absolute shite and unmemorable. Sonic Youth played just before them didn't they? I recall them kicking ass
Hmmm, I hope 2012 is better, to be fair Ian let them down more than Aziz. The guitar sounds tight, but it just isn't John. You can't go changing the riffs....
Listening to Ian’s voice (which was worst than ever here), it really was time to stop this farce cause it turned pathetic. Dunno if I should laugh or cry watching this. This said, what a waste....
I was there.. I'm a fan.. they were so bad hahah brown cannot sing for shit!!! The band were so bad to. people defending this are those "I'm a fan so I cannot say nothing bad" lot. people were leaving while laughing haha it was entertaining for sure
Whoever recorded this is a legend. This was never broadcast on live TV. What a gem. The only available footage of it.
I was there. I can confirm it was horrendous. Myself and my friends wandered off shaking our heads after the next song.
Never realised I was here for this night. 😂 I was 5 years old & my folks took me to see Underworld instead, off the back of Trainspotting using Born Slippy for the soundtrack that year.
everybody complaining about Ians voice on this, are you for real, he's always sounded like this live its not just this gig, he was always like this
@Leo Collins so true
Yep, he's always been out of tune live. Good in the studio, shit live.
When the drummer says ‘How we all doin out there tonight?’ in a cod American accent you know you’re in a big heap of shit.
I remember a review said Ian Brown sounded like a homeless man shouting into a bucket. I saw the gig and I didn't think it was that bad, but then again, I was bongoed on E.
@Anthony No. I watched the new documentary about the KLF earlier and the 90s were incredible. Everything’s so stale and safe now.
Oasis had just done knebworth with john squire as a guest like a week earlier!
It was so good, I love all the unsung heroes of the roses, the likes of Pete garner, Andy Couzens, Robbie maddix, Nigel ipinson, Aziz Ibrahim, Rob Hampson and of course Simon Wolstencroft.
I was up the front for this. The alcohol made it much better
I was at this gig. People loved it around me and Aziz & Maddix gave it 200% and earned the right to be up there in my book.
Agreed, I was there too near the front, those guys did try
on bass Dereck Smalls. He wrote this
Ha ha- thats the first thing I thought as well
Yes!
Oh sweet Jesus. When he starts signing you can just sense the confidence oozing out of him, the band and every single person there. So much pressure and so much riding on this.

Fkinghell, even my dog ran out of the room yelping!
i wanna be a doooogggg
Can see why Liam loves the tambourine 😂
The gig that killed (what was left of) the band, but the absolute utter chaos that surrounded the Roses' has always been a huge part of their appeal and story
This was the performance that inspired me to become a lifelong fan
Same here oasis nahuezv had made of stone from this gig and that inspired me to explore the other great tunes
You are smoking crack.
I was there and remember the Melody Maker review afterwards. "Mani played the first 16 bars and all was well with the world then Ian Brown opened his mouth and every dog in a 5 mile radius started howling".

I was there - it was heartbreaking
@@kevinhanson4703 Brown is a socialist and hates the imperialist legacy that the Union Jack carries.
Oh my ,this the first I’ve been brave enough to watch this. Just put your hands in the air and give up
This is MESMERISINGLY bad! Cant stop watching it. Slow motion car crash. You couldnt deliberately sing worse. Nice one for archiving what has become a byword for a bad gig!
Who would've thought, the three new guys put on a better show than Ian. Mani was fucking perfect as always
I was there it was a sad day. Then Ian Brown went solo and learnt to sing, sort of. 🤣
4:20 that'll ruin anyone's high!
Listening to this, I just don't wanna be... :) you can tell from Ian, where the Gallagher bros. took their stage tips
John Squire, sat at home with a brandy listening to this on the radio….absolutely pissing himself 😎
I remember Ian saying in an interview, when asked by Tony Wilson why people rip on his voice, that he did the Reading Festival in 96 and is was shockingly atrocious
sounds like they took lessons off the Shaggs :)
we all have our moments
amazingly bad! love it
As far as I'm concerned, Glasgow Green was the Stone Roses' final gig.
And now all these years later it’s Hampden
He murdered that 😂
Theirs no hiding behind the fact that IB vocals were truly fuckin’ woeful though?😕😕
Blast from the past... I was there. This only reminded me how bad Ian actually was that night. I only remember fans booing him. Was gutted tbh.
cocaine is a helluva drug
Hope you like their new direction
Ian Brown got the last and loudest laugh didn't he?
just outed himself as a massive spanner, now a laughing stock. also: jail
His solo stuff is excellent... Solarized, My Way, Monkey Business etc.... Love the latest single too, musically and lyrically . Gets my respect for standing up and speaking out - Browny can always hold his head up high even though his singing is ahem... 'Slightly' off here!

I mean, this is basically just the Roses in name only. The fact this performance was so bad was simply the straw that broke the camel's back.
You just have to laugh at this. I love the Roses but this is SO BAD that its fucking brilliant!!!
Mani and Aziz Ownguitar tried their best, but fuck me it is appalling. I was so off me tits I loved it at the time. The whizz must have been fucking phenomenal.
no need for shaggy to start shouting stuff on keyboards.this was the original death of the band.but any proper roses fan knows they were better and meant so much more to people.220,000 people cant b wrong
and people are looking forward to hearing him sing again?
now i realize why this has more dislikes than likes
And don't forget that all the "likes" are just people who like seeing proof Ian Brown was utter shite. This is so bad it's hard to understand why someone didn't just pull the plug on the power to save face and claim there was a massive power outage. And how was it mate? :D
@antunivanovic Ha, at 0:37 if someone told me that was Liam Gallagher I would have no reason not to believe them. Come on boys, avenge this performance at Heaton Park, going to be mega
Are people laughing or crying at 5:17 ahah
sunday for me pal
apparently people in the crowd didn't think it was so bad? who knows? aziz is a good guitarist though, don't knock him, check brown's solo stuff! and to all the doubters - they fucking smashed it at heaton park and if you can catch them on their current tour they will shut you up!!!
They smashed it at Heaton Park because they had reverted to the original line-up by then, duhhh
@TheBlackDelorian His name is Aziz Ibrahim.
Foghorn! LMFAO x 100000
The crowd were shouting play 'Wonderwall' and 'Don't Look Back In Anger' all through the set!
Well Liam Gallagher is clearly copying Ian so the crowd are all retarded
Connor Fraser Sorry, what?
It's fun when you click 'like' on such a shit thing. ;-)
He's so out of tune, he's almost in harmony with what the original notes should be. But not quite.
4:21... Pwhahahahaha!
That’s bad 😂. Emperor’s new clothes or what 😂. The session musicians they carried on with were overdoing it also .
Ian said he didn't go to bed the night before and was on the piss with his old pal Cressa. Ian doesn't normally drink. He admits it was a stupid thing to do. Plus, yeah, that guitarist is a poor replacement for John.
No his style was completely different and not John Squire esque.
@jemimallah I love Aziz, read that post back and could see it reads poorly, I mean he is class for not copying squires style and giving it his own!
I was down at the front for this. I'd seen them at Sheffield late '95 and they were great. First couple of tracks, obviously everyone is singing along...so you can't actually hear the singer...then, suddenly, it's...wait...what's that awful droning noise...? can't believe how shit we have it sunday though. not a mega for us, plan b? guy pecks my head more than professor green does.
whos on guitar? they should have got slash in imagine rejecting him
@Ronnie McColl yeah it did. Listen to John Robb interviewing Ian Brown 2004....
I was there that evening. Perhaps it was the hype of watching a band that was such an influence in my life in high school...but i remember it being absolute shite and unmemorable. Sonic Youth played just before them didn't they? I recall them kicking ass
He sounds like a beagle with acid reflux.
Critically their worst gig, realistically it isn't that bad
Mani and Aziz done seem too be in tune with each other though..
that guitar is horrible. what the hell was he smoking?
Hmmm, I hope 2012 is better, to be fair Ian let them down more than Aziz. The guitar sounds tight, but it just isn't John. You can't go changing the riffs....
HOW'WE DOIN' OUT THERE TONITE?...
'I wanna be adored' - kind of ironic, isnt it.
@Charlie Chipchase in what way?
Was Nigel Ippinson in this?
How very ian brown
@cozey123 Steady on potty mouth, Brian Potter would throw you out of his social club for using language like that.
Brownie sounds drunk!!
Should not chase the dragon before you go on stage
Listening to Ian’s voice (which was worst than ever here), it really was time to stop this farce cause it turned pathetic. Dunno if I should laugh or cry watching this. This said, what a waste....
mies reingeschissen bruder... sowas kannste nich abliefern
kein john, keine party.
However awful Ian was that night, at least he wasn't Nigel Ippinson with his "Here we go" bollocks.
What does he say at 1:07
I was there..
I'm a fan..
they were so bad hahah brown cannot sing for shit!!!
The band were so bad to.
people defending this are those "I'm a fan so I cannot say nothing bad" lot.
people were leaving while laughing haha it was entertaining for sure
Yes so disappointing, luckily other bands were there!
I never got how the Stone Roses were so popular, Brown couldn't sing to save his life . The Charlatans were far better.
He had some on and off gigs but during their prime he was generally good.
southerner4566 The charlatans music was weaker. At least they held it together mind you.
The charlatans music was nowhere near as strong as the roses and they knew it. But burgess could hold a note.
Hahahahaha, the stone roses changed music and invented their own sound, i like the charlatans but dont put them near the roses
Ian Brown was awful. Aziz Ibrahim nailed it for the whole gig - such a great guitarist.
ouch!
oh this is awful :'(
It was actually that bad then
Aziz bashed John so much but it’s his ONE claim to fame covering those guitar parts badly. #lordofthestringsnot
ian brown couldnae sing worth a f**k . cherivoh wi oor ten bob carryoot but ..everystep ..still back in the day !!
Good god. Awful vocals.
Terrible!
Dreadful…..
i was there
can't believe how shit we have it sunday though. not a mega for us, plan b? guy pecks my head more than professor green does.
