    Great video! But as others have said, you need to be careful with terminology - M.2 or 2.5inch is the size of SSD, whereas SATA or NVMe is the technology. An NVMe drive wouldn't work in this

    • @kevindeng1889

      Truly,the NVME is not support in the DeskPi Pro,because the speed of USB 3.0 for the Pi 4 is not very fast,no need the NVME for the DeskPi Pro

    • @harrisonknox1637
      @harrisonknox1637 3 года назад +11

      The M.2 slot is M-keyed for NVMe drives. I think (don't quote me) that the Pi 4 supports the NVMe protocol, but with it going over USB 3 you won't be getting typical NVMe speeds. It would be weird for them to use the M.2 slot for NVMe if they didn't actually support NVMe drives: if anything that would create a lot of confusion for consumers who wouldn't know otherwise and could lead to bad press. I definitely agree with your comment that we need to be more careful with the terminology, though.

    Well, that kind of stinks - I bought it and, based on your NVME comments, purchased an M.2 NVME drive for it, only to find out it's M.2 SATA. No big deal - I can use the NVME drive on another box, but now waiting for the M.2 SATA drive to arrive. Love your videos, but going to have to double check what you say, going forward...

    Love your videos. Keep them coming. The products being reviewed are really awesome. The only drawback is the need for a usb jumper. With todays technology, these companies should be able to build a produce that doesn’t need a usb jumper for the drive to work.

  • @Sparks52
    @Sparks52 2 года назад +14

    The needs to be corrected. The DeskPi Pro does *NOT* support M.2 NVMe SSD's. The M.2 adapter is for M.2 SATA SSD's only (i.e. it's not a PCIe). M.2 is a physical form factor.

    Swapped out from Argon one (v1) to this at the weekend.As commented before the heatsink took forever for me to get all four screws to bite. Googled about ribbon cables and that was ok. All fitted together after fine until I had to fit rear perspex. Had to enlarge USB ports holes slightly for it to fit. Have Manjaro Arm KDE Plasma running fine on it .

    I am loving mine, mounting the heat sync was a little bothersome for me as its a tight fit for the final short screw but yeah this is an awesome addition to the Pi4 ;)

    • @richardwicks4190
      @richardwicks4190 2 года назад +1

      The case is WAY too expensive. Unless you're putting in at least a 1TB HDD, why bother? SSD is fast enough, and if you want more space, a 256GB flash drive is around $40. The case is $200.
      Check out the FLIRC case (no, not affiliated with them) - I really like that case. The entire case is a heat sink and it's a nice little package. I can NOT overheat my pi with that, no matter what I do, and I did ffmpeg transcoding with it.

  • @YourFriendCaspian
    @YourFriendCaspian 2 года назад +1

    Correct me if I'm wrong but I am almost positive that it does NOT have an actual safe shutdown feature. Meaning the button on the case can't initiate a software safe shutdown, like for example the Argon case . You would have to shutdown the system through the operating system and then the button would cut the power to the board/drive. I really want this case but I haven't bought it yet because of this oversight so if I am mistaken please correct the record and I will buy it right away.
    Never the less, thank you ETA for all your amazing content. Keep them coming!
    Edit- The brackets for the Ice Tower seem to be deformed upwards away from the board which made it extremely hard to get attached to the Pi. Did anyone else run into the same problem? It seems like a qc problem.

    Had to watch this video review, as I bought one of these DeskPi Pro cases shortly after they were released.
    I had the pleasure of finding the parts easy to assemble, the only issue I had was that the little ribbon cables were difficult to get perfectly lined up and clamped in place (for my big farmer's fingers).
    I chose to buy and use an nvme style SSD (technically it's a nvme sata interface SSD, not PCiE nvme), at 1Tb, so I have plenty of room.
    After getting up and running I downloaded and installed Twister OS on my SSD, and boot and run from it, while running in Win-7 Themed OS (it looks EXACTLY like Win-7, it's really uncanny how good of a job they did with that theming!)
    I also (unexpectedly) received an upgrade kit from the DeskPi company a couple weeks back that included new circuit boards and the little divider and a neat little stand for the outside of the case. I did not request these upgrade parts, they just sent them to me free of charge with full instructions and with thanks for buying their case. Wow. I was surprised! I disassembled my DeskPi pro and took out all the old parts and included and re-assembled the parts and the case and it all booted right back up (running the awesome Twister OS Win-7 theme), and it's running Great!
    I use it daily!! It's a great little lite desktop for lite uses!
    Thanks for the review and the nice video of this setup! Nicely Done!

    The reason for getting a Pi is portability and cost. We're effectively upgrading the specs to laptop territory, to the point where its actually cheaper to buy a more powerful laptop.

    Thanks for the review I love this case, but only thing, the cooling is far from ideal compared to my Armor Case V2.0 with single fan, I got around 40C at 2.2Ghz. Btw how do I install the SD card copier on Ubuntu-Mate, I couldn't find it in the respo. thanks !

    Does anybody know if he has a recommendation or preference between the argon m.2 vs Deskpi pro v2?(Seem pretty comparable?)
    What about the preferred basic passive cooler for the Pi?(Looks like Akasa Gem might be his most most recent recommendation)
    IDK?
    Looked through so many of his videos, and I hate RUclips how I can't filter as far as recent within the context of a keyword search.

    Why would you go with nvme ssd when it’s pluged in into sata as sata -> nvme adapter. Does not make sense

    • @fffrrraannkk
      @fffrrraannkk 2 года назад

      Yeah he messed up. It's m.2 sata, not nvme. There would be no need for nvme anyway because it all hooks up through the usb 3 connection.

  • @jamesyoung6878

    You can just flash Raspbian directly to the ssd - no copying needed.

    So I'm looking at this on Amazon and a commenter claims this will not work with NVme. It looks like an NVme connector but I'm new to these. What is the verdict? 560 MB/s vs 3500 MB/S I want a WD MVNE drive. Thanks!

      video playback is great on mine. 4gb pi4 with little OC plays videos just fine.... but i have it set to force at 1080P only.. not designed for more than that

      @@josephs1753 I watch multiple livestreams/youtube videos at once at times. Was looking at picking up an atomic pi. They seem to have a little more processing power but still probably not for my use case.

    By nvme you mean m.2 sata? I have my doubts it supports nvme drives.

    Oh man, had I known this DesPi Pro existed I would not have bought a NasPi case, oh well, good video :-)
    Edit: Shame it only ships from the US, so much customs duty and shipping to pay, at least the NasPi was shipped through Amazon from within the UK and arrived 2 days after ordering.

    So, according to the DeskPi Pro product page, only M.2 SATA SSD is supported... NOT NVMe. This should be clearly stated and maybe the headline for your video shouldn't include NVMe as it is false. Otherwise, love your videos man, keep 'em coming.

    So you need proper thermal paste or thermal pad for actual performance of the fan powered and copper pipe heat traveling? Metal on Metal is a horrible solution.
