    Back in 1981 I attended de Coast Guard Electronics C School when it was in Governor’s Island, NYC. I was assigned to LORAN C Station Nantucket and they had three Tempest model 40 TTY. My final exam for the course was to take the whole TTY apart, including the printer which we didn’t cover it. The instructor told us to take apart the printer and lay it on the table. I took the printer apart and I was very proud of my work. Then the SOB of instructor told us to put the whole thing back together and to do a functional test, if it worked we pass. Brother I put the darn thing together (I have to say that I am mechanical challenge). I had about 10 screws and bolts left over, but the darn thing worked, grabbed the leftover items and put them in my pocket and left the classroom. In reality I never had to take a printer apart for the rest of my career (eight years) cause in reality if the printer failed you just swapped it with a replacement. Why this story case I LOL when you mentioned the “leftover” board. Love your video, I have a Argon case with an m.2 ssd and I am looking into this case for another Pi that I have (I have a total of 10 Pi including a cluster of 5 and a Open Media Vault. Outstanding review, keep them coming. Best regards from San Juan Puerto Rico, stay safe.

      Thank you so much for sharing your story Luis, really enjoyed reading it! I'm also glad you wound up passing the class, sounds like a challenging instructor 😀 Thank you also for your kind comments about this review, I have not built any Pi 4 clusters yet myself but it is also something I want to explore in the future. Perhaps running a Kubernetes cluster, that would be a fun project.

    UPDATE: After having issues about not receiving my Raspberry Pi when I ordered the DeskPi bundle Jon was super helpful and the issue has now been resolved. Did you try powering it on? If you bought it with the Pi 4, it's already installed and you'll receive an empty box for the Pi 4 since the Pi is already in the case for you. You can see that at the beginning of this video. Let me know, very curious.

    I just got the case (October 2023) and a few things have changed! The biggest is that the power is now delivered with a barrel-jack and adapter. I noticed that yours has standoffs under the cooler supports, whereas mine has a threaded spacer built into the cooler arms. They also color-matched and branded the USB bridge. I also saw in my instructions that it added an IR receiver, which I don't know if yours had.
    Since I had to build mine, I used Thermal Grizzly thermal pads instead of the ones it came with. I've found in other cases and ice towers that it tends to shave off a few more degrees.
    Not worth getting a replacement, but it's still a good case!

    Good detailed info on the DeskPi, a lot don’t go that in depth. One tidbit of info, just use “SS card copier” to copy your SS card to the ssd or m.2 and saves the need to redo all the updates and whatever software you may have installed. No need to completely reinstall everything just because you changed drives.

    I’ve got a Desktop Pi v.2 on order anxiously awaiting its arrival. I’ve watched a couple of reviews so far and came across yours and must say you did a tremendous job of explaining the overall product with features and benefits. I too own multiple Pi4B’s 4gb (3) at this time ; my main one is outfitted in an Argon 1v.1 case with the M.2 using a Team 512gb SSD as a Desktop PC and Media player. The 2nd Pi4B is in a passively cooled Anidees case (AI-PI4-BB-PRO Black ) with the built in cpu cooler and a DAC Hat from Inno Maker (RPI-HiFi-DAC) case modded for the RCA audio and headphone jack outputs as a Volumio media player using a 256gb mini aluminum thumb drive. The third Pi4B is in a Argon/NanoSound1 with the M.2 base equipped with 512gb SSD again as a 2nd Volumio media player that performs beautifully, great sounding as well.
    I plan on using the new DeskPi v.2 as my daily driver and likely retiring the Argon1 until I buy a 4th Pi and then give a buddy the Argon1 as a gift?
    Anyway long story made short I enjoyed your review and will reference it with the links for the software when I get my case.

You probably don't need it at this point, but I did create a guide on the ArgonOne (v1/v2) that may be useful for your friend that receives the Argon1: wagnerstechtalk.com/argonone . I hope you enjoy your DeskPi Pro v2, it has become my main Pi 4 case and likely won't be replaced anytime soon. Again, thank you for your kind comments and for watching.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  3 года назад +1

      That is one of the things I didn't particularly like about the Argon One M.2 case which I highlighted in that review. However, the DeskPi Pro case manages to solve that problem. I can see using this case quite a bit in future projects/videos for that reason.

      Should I return my argon one v2 and upgrade to this? I don't have the m.2 but had considered it in the future. I'm waiting for software to download so I can install it on a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB. Plan to use it for retro gaming, but might do other projects later in the future.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  3 года назад +1

      Totally up to you, both are great cases. You just have to weigh the convenience of having direct access to the microSD vs. having to open the case. This case is more expensive (but not by much, see towards the end for cheaper vs more expensive options). It's honestly a tough call and really depends on your needs. I use my Argon One M.2 with PINN Lite (with multiple OSes installed), so not having direct access to the microSD is not a big issue for me but is inconvenient when I do need access to it. This video explains more about PINN Lite ruclips.net/video/1Cqta4go45U/видео.html

    • @PotterPossum1989

      I'm just now getting into pi, so I'll probably hold off on this until I'm in a position where I may want to use the desktop. Due to portability, I think the argon is probably my best bet for now. In general, do cases tend to go on sale after a spell?
      I'm also not using an SSD on the argon, so that card slot is right at the back of the case, isn't it? I do wish everything was up front, but the small form factor really had me. Maybe I'll pick this DeskPi up and throw the media collection onto it at some point.
      My only other complaint is I wish there was some color difference, I don't mind aluminum cases, I just wish everything didn't look like a modem 🤣
      Love the channel by the way, I subscribed a few days ago and I've been watching videos like crazy. Very informative :-)

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Kegan, I appreciate your support by subscribing and watching! Case prices don't tend to go down much (5-10% at best) until a new version of the case is released - typically. You can watch for sales such as Prime Days, Black Friday, etc. stuff like that where you may find it cheaper.

    I’m using the DeskPi Pro V2.0.
    I keep getting a low voltage check power supply message. I’m using a WD 500GB SSD. I don’t get the same message when using an SD card or a USB stick. Could the SSD need more power than the board(s) can supply?
    Any help would be great. I’ve tried the included power supply as well as a canakit RPI USB-C power supply.
    Thank you for the tutorial. I was able to get mine all setup and with the exception of using the SSD and having almost constant low power warnings, I like it. Maybe I’ll try a different type/brand of SSD and see if that helps.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 года назад +2

      Make sure you're using the power supply included with the DeskPi Pro v2.0. If not, you can pick one up here: deskpi.com/collections/accessories/products/qc-3-0-power-supply-for-deskpi-pro If you are using their power supply, which it seems you are, I'm not sure what the issue could be (most likely, not the drive). Verify the power supply, if good there, click the blue chat icon in the lower-right of the page from the link above and let them know the issue. I've seen this kind of thing when the wattage wasn't sufficient for both the Pi and the SSD so I'm think it's the power supply (defective perhaps) but always best to check with the Mfgr. to be sure.

    • @WagnersTechTalk

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 года назад +1

      @@brentjohnson6654 Yes, regarding the GPIO connector I "made it fit" but it was very very tight. I mention that at the end of the video. The issue with it is that the PCB that the GPIO pins are connected to have very little clearance (~4mm). I had to bring it in from the bottom and tilt the cable upwards and push in pretty hard. If you can find a thin GPIO connector, then it may fit better (I used what I had on-hand). But again, very tight fit.

    DSO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !
    I purchased two of those and none of them works.I used two RasPi-5/8Gb and none will reboot. Tried Rasbian-32/63 and Diet-Pi. There is also a problem with cooling fan, and no video (unless I pull out and reinsert HDMI cable). I have to do it every time I reboot or when the device goes to sleep. In other words - serious issues with the software. Cooling fan almost impossible to mount because of the short threads on the screws. Company completely unresponsive. It looks great, but that is the only positive thing. It simply does not work and until the software/drivers etc is updated it is simply waste of money. Customer support does not exist.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 года назад +4

      So, you used a RasPI-5/8GB? No such product is publicly available at this time, this is only for a Pi 4/8GB. Raspbian/PiOS comes in 32/64-bit versions. The case you have, is it v1 or v2 as shown here? The cooling fan requires drivers, as do many other Pi 4 cases unless you enable the hardware switch to let the fan run continuously. Installation steps for the fan control software (including DietPi) are well-documented and may be found here: wiki.deskpi.com/deskpi . No problems here with the HDMI, I would recommend trying a different cable. Can't comment on the cooling fan, it was already mounted when I received it. I'm fine to leave your comment here for others to see. I don't appreciate trolling, but I respect honest opinions. Not sure which we have here. Your very first sentence screams trolling, however.

      Fan noise was on a par equal to that of the Argon One. No need to reboot to detect the SD card change. I did not experience any undervoltage issues. It's pricy as well, but includes a touch screen display: ruclips.net/video/M-EleAndOGA/видео.html . I don't have any major complaints with either of the 3 devices, really depends on what you want to use it for. If you want a mobile Pi4, RasPad 3. If you want a solid desktop replacement with access to the SD card, Deskpi Pro is a great option. Argon One M.2 is great too, but could have been much better with direct access to the microSD card using an extender board. JMHO
