    Fantastic service from the Deskpi providers. I received the new board etc. even though I had not asked for it. Don’t see that type of service from anyone these days. Well done to them. Thank you to you for the video, learn’t some new things.

    I order this box to setup NAS. The I run into 2 issues: power supply and SSD not shown in OS. If you had canakit power supply with on/off switch -- DON'T USE IT on this case. It'll boot up but has "low voltage warning", use supply that comes with the case. The second is the 40-pin ribbon cable just run straight over the standoff of cooling fan. If you don't pay attention when you put back the case, the cable can get crushed or mounting screw might go through it. Luckily I did not put screw there, the cable is still good and it's seeing my SSD now. Just take some time to route the cable around the standoff and you're good to go. Thanks for the video as always!

    Thanks for the update, I was considering one of these in December but heard about the issues,
    It's such a shame they didn't implement the UASP and TRIM functionality, definitely a missed opportunity and another deal breaker for me,
    Back to plan B, trying to shovel a 2.5" SSD and adapter into a Geeekpi set top box or using the Geeekpi Hdmi breakout board in my own custom aluminium case, along with a CSL SSD cable for max speed,
    If anyone knows if it is physically possible (or not) to fit a 2.5" X 7mm SSD into a Geeekpi set top box (I don't mind a bit of dremel work or an adapter hanging out of the back) please let me know, cheers

    Sure it’s an older thread and meanwhile the DeskPi Pro V2 is out - but it still helped me a lot: here in Europe they are still selling the DeskPi Pro V1 stacked with the updated internals (you basically get two boards with one enclosure and one fan). After having seen your measurements and read the comments about UASP on the old board, I switched back to the older V1 board (since I have no issues with that). Nice side effect: the JMicron controller on the oder board with UASP is consuming 0.5W less power! So if it works and you use the DeskPi always on, it really makes no sense to switch to the updated board with ASMedia Chipset. If you get your hand on a new DesPi Pro V2, it would be interesting to se another comparison video from you. Subbed!

    When you put up the "bad advice" notice I was wondering if you'd released the magic smoke.
    Too bad about the "updated" SSD interface using the lesser chipset.
    Still faster than a microSD, but UASP support would have been great.
    Now I need to check the USB drive cables I bought.
    Edit: yes, the Eluteng "blue" USB 3.0 SATA cables do support UASP.

    • @leepspvideo
      @leepspvideo  3 года назад

      No smoke, just didn’t power the fan with the grey connector. I guess it’s for something else.

    Ribbon cable is for the IO breakout board. Screw that hard drive down through the board, that's a lot of stress on the little plastic connector!

    • @mbernardi1961

      The wide ribbon cable allows you to connect the board to the GPIO connectors, so allowing fan control and possibly the front USB and IR connections

    Finally received my replacement. Working fine now, with one strange quirk: If you want to boot from SD (for instance, to use a different OS etc.) it will NOT boot until you pull the USB 3.0 jumper to disable the SSD/HD drive. Boot from the SD card once, shutdown, replace the USB jumper, and then it will behave as expected, bootable by USB or SD card if inserted.

    That’s quite a bit of effort for a Pi case. One thing I look for in a Pi case is ease of Pi removal because there are occasions where a swap out is needed.

      That ribbon cable should not me left that way...it is there to make the GPIO pins useable...you need to take the adapter from the old board and use it the same way on the updated board...for those that want the GPIO pins to work

    I received my replacement parts for the DeskPi Pro I purchased and I am deeply disappointed. The first HDMI Slot doesn't work, the USB 2.0 ports don't work, I find the data transfer speed to be poor, and to access the GPIO header I needed to remove the system from the case. The GPIO slot does not allow for connecting a cable to, the relay board they provide sits in a position which is spatially inadequate. It cools around 56deg, which compared to my favourite case the Muizei, it runs much higher even with the low profile ice cooler. I have yet to contact them about it, in any case I will be replacing the DeskPi very shortly. On a happy note, after I removed the unit from the case and hooked up my sound card to the GPIO header, it worked and I now have great sound on my Raspberry Pi.
    My speed test results with a WD Green 264GB drive.
    Sequential write speed 102080 KB/sec (target 10000) - PASS
    Random write speed 3328 IOPS (target 500) - PASS
    Random read speed 2671 IOPS (target 1500) - PASS
    Test PASS. Pretty poor read/write results.

    HI LEEP, HAVE YOU SEEN that DeskPi released a firmware for the updated board with ASMedia Chipset (exactly the one you tested in this video)? See DeskPi Homepage, News, About UASP / TRIM, it's been out for a while. And it will enable UASP (!) and TRIM functionality. Seems you are demanded to make a follow up video on this one.... 😉 looking forward to it👋

  • @Sparks52
    @Sparks52 3 года назад

    Uhhhh - the ribbon cable does go to a header. There's a simple daughter board that plugs into the GPIO to extend the header to the other side of the case so you can access it externally. The ribbon cable connects to that board on the other side of the USB ports. If you had installed that board it would have been inherently obvious. In addition, DeskPi has issued a firmware update for the SATA board with flashing instructions to provide UASP and TRIM.

    This update is primarily focusing on better M2/SATA compatibility whilst fixing and improving on a few other things. The old boards are actually (on paper at least) Faster as they did support UASP however, many (like myself) had issues with compatibility and had to add "quirks" command to "cmdline.txt" to even get it to boot. (without quirks command it could take about 20-25 minutes to even boot leading many to falsely believe, it simply didn't work) As lee stated, this v2 board uses asm1153 which does not support 6Gbps,only supports 3Gbps. (The 6gb chip is unavailable worldwide im hearing) So Yes. this could be faster like the Argon M.2 case (& maybe in the future it will be. V3 anyone?) but, it's still not bad, it looks great, cools great and has many other nice features. (I like having One OS on m2/sata, one OS on SSD and can still boot another O/S via USB 3.0 on the rear & IR built in) 👍

    I really wanted to like this. Ordered two of those - it sucks ! DO NOT BUY IT !
    Tried Rasbian32/64 - will not boot of SSD. Will not shot down properly (the blue LED stays ON), cooling fan makes buzzing noise. It took 3 weeks to deliver to US (despite I paid $25/shipping).
    There is no SD card (as shown on their video). The idea is fantastic but this product is not really ready for market :-(
    Website is very limited and has not enough information. Some command presented do not work at all. By default the fan is set to OFF and you cannot use it in the case without the fan. Some stand off screws have thread to short which makes it very hared to screw the heat-sink. The plexiglass on the front allows light from LEDs out which makes the front look like it is cracked or broken (ugly). Not happy at all.

    DSO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !
    I purchased two of those and none of them works.I used two RasPi-5/8Gb and none will reboot. Tried Rasbian-32/63 and Diet-Pi. There is also a problem with cooling fan, and no video (unless I pull out and reinsert HDMI cable). I have to do it every time I reboot or when the device goes to sleep. In other words - serious issues with the software. Cooling fan almost impossible to mount because of the short threads on the screws. Company completely unresponsive. It looks great, but that is the only positive thing. It simply does not work and until the software/drivers etc is updated it is simply waste of money. Customer support does not exist.
