    There is a brief mention in the video that it's possible to image the M.2 drive directly and I thought I'd expand on that a little more - I went through the process of imaging the SD card and then cloning it for 3 reasons - first so that I could run the speed test on an identical environment on both drives to make it a fairer test, second to show how it's done if you have an existing installation on an SD card and want to clone that the SSD, and third to show how to update to the latest firmware that supports USB boot. For a fresh install on a brand new RPi4, I'd definitely recommend imaging the M.2 drive directly if you can just to save some time.
    On that note, it has been pointed out to me that if you don't have a USB M.2 adapter or A-A cable, it's also possible to plug the little plug-in USB A-A adapter into a USB extension cable and connect the Argon One's base to a PC that way. I certainly hadn't considered that so I just wanted to share the info - big thanks to Allan Leon for the tip! 👍

      I have not been able to get my laptop to successfully image PI OS to the m.2 SSD, using the Argon Baseplate. I do have an m.2 to usb in the mail, but learning this was a treat. It actually took me longer to figure out to pull power from a separate source, to power the LCD screen, in order to allow enough power for the m.2, that is now making the PI a little more power hungry (sometimes it's the seemingly smallest things). I really did have a blast learning this method, thanks for your interest, and time. I'm looking forward to being able to teach these things to another, one day soon.

      Did I miss the version of Pi you installed? I plan on using my Argone One with a 2TB and running Shinobi. Shinobi recommends using Pi Bullseye lite 64 bit especially when using a Pi4B (4GB) you see any issues using that. I'm using RTSP cameras. They worked great on a Pi3B+ but always had issues with the SD card getting corrupted every 3-6 months. So Since I want to save a lot of videos and hopefully avoid the corruption issue (and back up to my NAS) I thought I used my Argone one with 1TB and another with 2TB M.2 drives. Any issues or problems you noticed along the way would be greatly appreciated.
      I was lucky enough to get 2 Pi4's 8gb, 2 Pi4 4gb and a Pi4 2gb b4 the shortage along with a bunch of Pizer0 W2's (actually about 6 of them. LOL. Maybe it was dejavue but I got lucky). I just ordered when they came out.
      Thanks Again.

      P.S. was also able to order 2 - orange pi zero 2 w 4GB and 2 - orange pi zero 2 w 1GB. Aliexpress was faster delivery than Amazon (about 2 weeks faster) Also Aliexpress was a lil cheaper in price and a lot cheaper in shipping and no sales tax. (I know it comes from China but the Amazon version comes from the same exact place, (company) but saves me a lot of $. Maybe I'll do a video on them. It would be my first ever video on RUclips but maybe you or someone can point me to where I can be able to setup a simple way to publish the video. I did some camera work and editing in my younger days (and a programming background b4 I retired) but never did any publishing on RUclips. Any help is appreciated.

    I'm glad you mentioned the security worries for "just execute this random bash script, which will run things as root" - it's hardly ever mentioned by so many tutorials and reviewers, and it always gives me geek-goose-bumps. At least, for argon, they're pointing it at their own domain, and not some el-rando third party server...

      It's just one of those long term Linux user things that I think is worth pointing out to potential new people, I think. If it leads to one more person thinking about what they're typing rather than blindly copying and pasting commands into the terminal then I'm sure it will have been worth it!

    Great tutorial. I purchased the system and set it up about a year ago and put it away. Today, I purchased a 10 inch touch screen. I plan on using it with pfSense.

    Fantastic video! I did not know the trick about setting the fan speed. Probably due to no RTFM. :) Thanks again!

    A couple notes: you mention that screwing the botton in order to change the SD may be inconvenient, note that the version that doesn't provide the SSD adaptor exposes the SD to be quickly excanged.
    On another note, there is a cut near the exposed GPIO pins that could allow routing a flat cable for a camera or a display.

    You should think about doing a setup for a Bitcoin Node. With RPi5 and Umbrel 1.0 being available on the 18/3, this setup looks ideal for that.

    Have you noticed any attenuation of the WiFi signal because of the all metal case? And are there constraints on which M.2 boards would work?

    • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  2 года назад +1

      That's something I really should test, the case was revised fairly on to try to improve the wifi performance (I believe that a big groundplane was removed from the bottom part).
      The manufacturers claim that it will support any non-NVMe M.2 drive with key B or key B&M. Personally I'd just buy the cheapest drive possible as it's only connected over USB UASP anyway.

    Hello, great video. I added fan script, configured to default settings & reboot however my fan keeps running non stop, not loud but continuous. It's usually under 40deg. What can or should I do to fix? If I just leave it running any risk of increased wear of fan etc? I'm using Ubuntu on putty terminal and running a node so it's on 24/7. Thanks

    Nice Video. do you know if it supports POE ? or any other recommended method to use POE with the Argon One case ? -its one less power socket for me as POE is already available.

    I installed Raspberry Pi OS on my Argon One M.2 and moved it to the SSD, but I have been having trouble loading RetroPie to the SSD now. My only solution thus far is to put RetroPie on an SD card and I'm now running the RetroPie, but I want to remove the SD card and put everything on the SSD drive. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cool and well thought Pi case! I saw videos of this case before, afair it was a plastic version of it?

      I'm not sure, there are a few that look similar but I believe this was originally a KickStarter and has always been metal. 🙂

    Is it possible to configure the fan of that case with an Ubuntu Linux installation on the Pi? Maybe anyone tried that part on (Ubuntu) Linux?

      I've been working with the same business for around 10 years now as a subcontractor. They provide the hardware and installation services and subcontract all of the development to us. It certainly seems like a pretty tight nit community so best of luck to you, is it worth hitting up some of your old contacts to see if they have any work on?

      @@ctrlaltrees Thanks for the response. I live in Philadelphia. Lost my job in August 2019 and get told "I'm over skilled for this job" every-time I interview. (too old-LOL) I have an IT background. I have a lot of small businesses around me. Mostly Asian and Latino stores and a lot of restaurants (and take out). I know a lot of them and they usually have those android boxes to get TV from their home countries. We usually end up having a conversation about how they like to advertise on their TV's in the business, like their menu, local activities about their ethnic background. So I think there is a chance to do business with them as I have already asked and they are interested. Can you recommend any signage packages? Do you use open source or purchased? I really need to work and any help would be appreciated.

    I get you wanted to benchmark the SD card to compare to the M.2, but if you use your noggin you can completely skip the SD card entirely. Mentioned in case others would prefer to save the time and get up and running a lot faster...

    • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  2 года назад +2

      Ah touché, I didn't notice that in my rush to post a little bit of know how, with the noggin comment being intended more of a pointer to think about it logically rather than a cheap and undeserved dig that it probably gave the impression of, in hindsight. Silly me.

    The worst fan control configuration. Is annoying that you cannot simply download something and added, but NO, they must screw us with that stupid script that only work in a few distros...
