We clambered to the top of this beautiful hill in North Nibley to bring you this beautiful Irish song. This song has a special place with us as it's always one of our favourites to sing with friends and brings back many great memories of camaraderie and laughter.

I'm a simple man, when I see a new video from The Longest Johns, I watch it
Simple men have simple needs
Simple needs come from a simple life. That is happiness.
Ian M except when it’s 3 hours long, then I default to watching their older videos lmao
as should be done my friend.
Imagine just walking in the countryside and just stumbling upon The Longest Johns recording this.
On some of the earliest videos they did at the beach and stuff they got a crowd pretty damn quickly
Imagine being the dizzy camera person
well then i'd consider myself dead, for a miracle like that could only happen in heaven
Angels play concertina and sing baritone bass and tenor
Deathslayer... y u do dis?
I know it's old vid, but I MUST say... any other commenters understand how chorally impossible it is to stay singing together on rubato rhythms, and these guys aren't even LOOKING at each other??? This is a group with literal years singing together, they are THAT tight!! Mind-blowing!
The thing is, what you hear and what you see weren't recorded at the same time. The audio was probably recorded in a studio and overlaid with the video. Nevertheless, I completely agree with you that it sounds amazing and is massively impressive.
I recently saw a documentary about Kilmainham Gaol and its role in Irish history. This brought some of that tragedy back, just as the song was intended. Very well done!
You guys are actually really underrated, my favourite band by far.
The masculine urge to stand back to back with true companions in the countryside, singing about working class life problems from hundreds of years ago.
Backed by best friends, gazing out at the open world, and singing a beautiful song
Living the dream lads!
It’s weird hearing this sung this well... it’s a lot better than the drunken version my family come out with
A hungry feelin' came o'er me stealin'
And the mice were squeelin' in my prison cell
(chorus)
And the auld triangle went jingle jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
To begin the mornin' the warden was bawlin'
Get up out of bed boy, and clean up your cell
(chorus)
Well the screw was peepin', and the lag lay sleepin'
As I was weepin' for my girl Sal
(chorus)
In the female prison there are seventy women
And I wish to god it was with them, that I did dwell
(chorus)
On a fine spring evenin', the lag lay dreamin'
And the seagull's a-wheelin', high above the wall
(chorus)
All along the banks, of the Royal Canal
this deserves far more upvotes than it has
I've been a folkie for 50 years now and this is the best version of this song I've ever heard.
Absolutely fantastic as usual.
Beautiful North Nibley, Gloucestershire
I love their voices and their harmonies.
You are the most underrated bunch in the world, and I wish you well in life.
Although the shores of an ocean may stretch onward, and the ocean spread forevermore, may your travels through the world be guided by the waves you make for yourselves. Good travels, and many happy years to you all.
When I was at the port Townsend wooden boat festival I recognized some of the shanties sung because of you guys!
i like the bass
The buttery biscuit bass?
@@thelongestjohns of course
Damn fine, lads.
This is art
beautiful video. nothing fancy or extravagant, just you guys standing back to back and the focus on your singing. i love it.
Thank You!
How it should be sung ❤
Can you guys please do Flowers of Bermuda? I love Stan Rogers and he was a really underrated singer/writer during his time but his name seems to have drifted off across the horizon since his death god rest his soul. Its one of my most favorite songs he did next to ones like the Mary Ellen Carter and I'd just love to hear your rendition of it. You're an amazing group of people and damn talented all of you. Keep it up guys.
A very livid Moose if they could just the whole Between the Breaks Album I would be in heaven
@@dennile_7355 For shanty singers it's an untapped wonder , every song original or cover is golden
They’ve done Barrett’s privateers a while ago, that would be a good one tho
Just to keep you updated. They have done mary ellen carter and norhtwest passage. Although I assume those aren't the only songs.
Reminds me of when i heard this in the film, Inside Llewyn Davis.
Tis a great film
@@thelongestjohns indeed it is
Strange hearing it without the Dublin slang, but still lovely!
Lovely location and beautiful harmonies lads!
I've already listened to this 100 times
Superb!
Doing my country proud lads
What a simple, neat idea for a music video. I dig it!
Folk played on a 4-way-human-leslie! Perfect!
I gotta admit aas a man that has done a little time, this made me emotional.
I randomly found you guys 4 months ago when I was meandering through RUclips little did I know I was gonna find the most fire music and start an obsession. Your music inspires me, thank you.
I did the same thing lol!!
You guys should do this for the Mingulay Boat Song!
This group doesn’t get enough love, y’all have amazing voices keep up the good work
Great rendition. I've only heard The Corries sing this previously.
Look up the Dropkick Murphys' rendition 😂
Leo Majors I’m kinda hip doe
Luke Kelly's version is quite good, it's a real shame he is no longer with us.
The definitive version of this is sung by the Dubliners. Either Ronnie Drew or Luke Kelly, but I'm partial to Ronnie's "40 a day and gargling concrete" voice.
Haven’t heard this one before.
It's a traditional Irish folk tune, so not quite a full sea shanty
Drop Kick Murphys got a good rendition
Beautiful harmonies 💕
Looks like I hadn't commented on this yet :/ that, or youtube doesn't want to show me. EITHER WAY, Take this engagement! I want to see this channel grow.
You’re a star, thanks mate!
This has become one of my go-to comfort songs. Others have already said it, but the way your voices go together is some kind of alchemy, and it’s a balm for my soul. (Plus, I do have a fondness for your nature setting videos, makes me miss England so.)
Beautiful
Mmmmmm the harmonies get right down deep in my bones - love iiit
My new fave of Auld Triangle~ luv the harmonies : ) I bonked into the song some yrs ago- The Dubliners (Ciaran Bourke's Final Appearance)brummydubliner posted .. lots of faces you recognise singin along (Bono, I think Sting, & bunch of others)- Luv ya T L Johns, harmonies & vid are super great!! : ) 🌟🎶
I have watched this 3 times a day since it dropped I feel this in my soul
So good and so different from the version I'm used to, by the Dropkick Murphys! That one's... Different. 😂
Something about the way you sat and filmed this, the tone and the way you carry yourselves, it feels authentic. Like there's a real reason for you to be singing these words. That's what always gets me about you guys.
amazing cover, luke kelly would be proud
I love the High Kings so much... but this is so much better :)
When he didn't say bowsie I was confused
@@_xxdillydillyxx1_6 same XD
You are definitely men outstanding in a field
Loving this from Victoria, Australia. Some of our key historical sites are tied to our heritage as a penal colony for Britain's convicts. I used to sing this while I was locking up at the old Geelong Gaol, which is now a museum.
Great bit of in the round cinematography
I'm pretty simple, I see The Longest Johns I click
Very nice
Your guy's music always lifts my spirit up. :)
i love the longest johns range of broadcastable emotion, they can go from the workers song, to scrooge, to this in under a month.
One word: chills.
I first saw you on a weekend break to Bristol 5 or 6 years ago, and I fell in love there and then. Whenever I need a spiritual lift, or just to smile, I play something you sing. So special, all of you.
No views, 2 likes, and zero comments. How am I this early? But enough about me and the fact I'm not three months late. This is damn amazing, sounds damn awesome in the background, but when you play attention to the lyrics, it gets even better!
Oh boy, I most definitely didn't expect this one but I most definitely did enjoy it.
i remember in one of your old livestreams I requested this song and you sang in amazingly, glad to hear an even better version. Back then you even had to search for the lyrics.
I must say.... Nicely done fellas
Bloody fantastic. Awesome as ever.
Oh boy can't wait for the next album
amazing ❤
Flamin fantastic
That's awesome ♥
Brilliant!!!
So unlike 2 weeks ago, I passed this week's Math quiz! By the skin of my teeth, but still! Auld Triangle, haunting as always. Really enjoying y'alls consistent uploads. Until next week, cheers guys :)
Best Ever!!!!
Finally, the auld triangle !
So I'm scrolling recommended for fun and come across shanty's? Like sailor songs? interesting probably sounds silly....and then they began, and the mountains moved, and my soul shook. Why am I so taken by these songs?
Well done 👍
Listening to this in bed be like:
"Get up out of bed boy"
Not sure how effective it would be as an alarm clock
@@thelongestjohns about as effective as a lullaby
This is just outstanding.
I went up the Nibley Monument last summer, what a pity I missed this... I can't believe I only just found out about you guys, I live near Thornbury! How beautifully you sing!
Thank you so much! It's a beautiful place up there. We filmed Rufford Park in the forest on the way up there as well. We all met in Thornbury!
I can’t unhear the Shayne Topp Smosh Funeral version☠️
my god, your voices mix so damn well... i wish i could find some voices that paired this well with my own...
Amazing
Would love to hear Down By The Salley Gardens sung by you ♥️
This is beautiful.
Saw you guys at the the Tall Ship, best harmonies I ever did hear and what a setting for the gig! Cheers for being awesome.
Keep up the good work lads 👍
Thank you for another wonderful song. Love you guys
Very cool :D I'm waiting for Santiana )
They already did that one
@@nicolasdiaz1542 You mean that one on the boat? nah, i want one like this :D
that canal is so deep
This was absolutely beautiful!
Excellent. You guys bring me great joy
I find it hilarious the RUclips likes to pair Longest Johns videos with Old Spice commercials!
*happy noises*
Magnifico! Loved it mates!
Nice work, guys. Just subscribed.
Many thanks mate! Welcome to the community :)
Yes
Thats awesome! I really like you guys 👍
Amazing as always, lads.
nice vid guys!
Loved the song! Beautiful harmonies! I have to say the left/right balance sounds weird when watching the video. It would be impossible to match but just audio, it is really nice.
Love it. I'm right in saying this is a great *Irish* song this time :P
Haul away, boys.
Stunning work as always gents. Always a delight ❤️❤️❤️
I'm really glad you're uploading more and more, you guys are the greatest!
