I just want y'all to know, about a year ago I went on a scientific cruise (collecting rock samples from the seafloor) from October through December. I was one of the (un)lucky few that drew the short straw to work the 1 am to 9 am shift. Between Wind and Water was one of my favorite companions on the journey. There was nothing like listening to your harmonies while watching the stars, wind, and waves roll by (when you're not describing the minerals in basalts). Thank you for all that you do!
I did 11 years onboard nuclear attack submarines. I left the service, swore I'd never go near the water again. 9 months later, I reenlisted in the naval reserve, drove aluminum "war canoes" armed with grenade launchers and .50 caliber machine guns, drove big green trucks and toted a rifle. Now I sail my own boat, often alone, sometimes out in the ocean. I was definitely blind to make up my mind, to go to sea once more. I just can't seem to swallow the anchor.
I'm a Navy vet as well. I served five years as an aircraft mechanic and deployed twice on a carrier...they were the five worst years of my life. I had friends die and nearly lost myself in the bottom of a bottle and on the business end of a barrel. We weren't even at war--we were just overworked, underpaid, and aggressively ignored. Even as I'm working through the things I suffered, I find myself thinking about the good times I had, the places I've been, and the people I miss, and somehow I found myself looking up Naval Reserve opportunities in the same day that I cried for hours reliving the day I learned one of my shipmates killed himself. I don't know what about it calls me back, but it's good to see that I'm not the only one.
@@ajax1137 Yeah, something about that "It was then that I wish that I was dead and could go to sea no more" hits me a bit too hard, although I guess listening to this song keeps me off the water a little longer.

I'm reminded of how Alexander Selkirk was rescued from an island where he'd been marooned through long lonely years. He wrote a book about his miserable experience, hoping he could make money and not have to go to sea again. He took his manuscript to a famous author, asking for advice. The famous author told him nobody would want to read such a book, so Selkirk sighed and went back to sea, and Daniel Dafoe made a fortune off of *_Robinson Crusoe_* . . . .

Even if I have to play alone, I still just enjoy the atmosphere that this music creates because it gives me a safe space. Thanks to you, Longest Johns, for giving this seafaring heart of mine a place to rest
I recently got myself invested in listening to sea shanties, I don't listen to them in a directed manner but rather anything that sounds good to my ears. I travel a lot due to my work, especially to rural underdeveloped places and as well as overseas, and I used to listen to the (now ever growing) playlist. In my first ever office tour, I was in Glasgow. One fine night, I was listening to the playlist dead in the night as I worked and couldn't sleep, and this utter gem of a song played randomly on "suggested songs". I swear to God I will never forget that feeling, I was quite unreal to be honest. Idk how a song made me feel so many things. From then on, this song has been a staple for me, whenever I left home for a tour; it doesn't even have to be a tour specifically, I generally just listen to this and think of all the places I have been to and the things I have seen. Truly this song is something special.
The first time I heard this song I knew that it would stick with me. I was hoping for a nice mental pallet cleanser before going to sleep, but I'll settle for yearning.
Living in rural NS can be bland. Songs and shanties likes this remind me of the beauty of the province I live in. Especially in summer, something about shanties and pirate songs just sit best in warmer climates next to ocean coasts.
I used to listen to this on repeat at work during a really hard part of my life 2 1/2 years ago. Idk why but it helped, and it grounded me then. Thank you
I discovered your work a few months ago, pretty much by chance (youtube autoplay is a great thing). I love it! Great voices, great videos! This is one of my favourite songs, along with Ashes, and from the funny ones Hoist up the thing and Got no beard.

Lads, i keep coming back to this one after years and years, its legendary, well done well done
This song is by far my favorite from the new music videos. Can´t stop listening.
That's wonderful to hear! Hopefully we can keep that up with some more down the line...
My friends in the Navy love your songs
The first time I heard this song I knew that it would stick with me. I was hoping for a nice mental pallet cleanser before going to sleep, but I'll settle for yearning.
Remember this from Assassin's creed Rouge when Sean Dagher singed it. Absolutely an all time favourite of mine
Love this one too ❤
Living in rural NS can be bland.
Thank you
I sing this at work and it really lifts my mood
DAMN BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!!!!!! The dark tones, the minor notes, the hard body oceanic lyric, bloody brilliant. Bloody gd brilliant!!!
I didn't know I knew this song by heart until this video came out. It's a good song to remember!
It's amazing how easily you can absorb them. Many thanks for supporting the channel :)
Another video and song that make me miss my home on the coast of Maine.
i can finally hear this song *once more*
7 months later and still love this song, beautifully haunting
This is one of my favorites, makes me wish I was in Halifax
Since we got Off to Sea, I'd like to pitch my personal favorite Longest Johns song for a remake. Bones in the Ocean
Please come tour in Southern California!
I discovered your work a few months ago, pretty much by chance (youtube autoplay is a great thing). I love it! Great voices, great videos! This is one of my favourite songs, along with Ashes, and from the funny ones Hoist up the thing and Got no beard.
Their voices give me medieval ballad like vibes.
Love it. I go on Dubliners binges pretty regularly, and their rendition of this song is one of my favorites. I believe this is the first time I've heard another version, now that I think about it.
I just can't quit listening to this. So, so good. Well done!
IF BLACKBEARD WAS A SINGER IN HIS TIME, HE WOULD SOUND LIKE THESE GUY'S!!! I LOVE IT.
It’s incredible how you have so many beautiful songs and not even a handful of them have any instruments. Keep up the good work, especially with your stringy planky thing!
Thanks mate! There will definitely be more with it down the line
I forgot about the stringy planky thing!!!
I first found my love for shanties and other songs like them when playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag, when I found this channel it reignited my love for these kinds of songs. When I have the money I'm definitely buying an album. Keep up the good work guys!
Thanks so much! Really great to have you with us :)
No, you guys have my thanks for the amazing singing and funny gameplay videos.
I’ll always stand by my opinion that you guys are criminally underrated. I absolutely love this song.
Yes again!
I think I"m addicted to your voices and songs! Thank you!
Your guys singing is so hypnotic, I often fall asleep to your soothing voices. Hate a great days my mateys
2020 was the year i got a lot of my happiness from your sea shanties. The world is messed up, but at least i can hoist up the thing.
It saddens me knowing that music like this doesn't get as much attention from public radio as rap or hip-hop.
This one always makes me think. Nothin' else really to say, except for a 👍 and see you next week!
Cheers mate! The song definitely brings up a lot of thoughts and feelings
1 year ago and i still come back everyday, what a great song !
This music video is so pure. The shots are great and the expressions, setting and everything really pulls you into the story. The atmosphere of the video fits perfectly with the song. I love it.
YES, this song was stuck in my head for the past four hours and I just saw it pop up on you channel
Sneak attack!!
The Longest Johns AHH! a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one :D
This one is my favorite from this album! I keep listening to it over and over again. Glad to see it in a video!
Glad to have been able to make something new and special with it for you!
Beautiful song and a life lesson, too. ;)

Sea faring shanties are the best great work lads
God this makes me want to sail around the world! 🌊⛵🌊
Ha, somehow I think that's the opposite effect of what the lyrics say, but the sentiment is greatly appreciated :D
Makes me want to stay home with hot chocolate and a roaring fire. 🔥😊
really?
whoa precious, very beautiful yessss
The precious songses?
This is one of the first songs from you guys that I fell in love with. It's absolutely beautiful ❤
I just found your channel and I am absolutely hooked! I’ll be buying your album soon. Looking forward to seeing more from you all!
I can feel this song touch my soul down to the core. Sometimes I truly feel I was born into the wrong ERA of humanity.
