Love Rupert. The thing is, feelings are reactions to thoughts. They do not arise in awareness of themselves. So one must observe the thoughts with extremely alert but calm attention. The idea is not to allow any linkage of a feeling to the thought. Rupert has confessed that he loves thinking. This may not be a problem for him, but for most people, Eckhart Tolle’s emphasis on becoming aware of the thoughts, and not to think compulsively is critically important. One observes thoughts arising, without linkages, in meditation.
For what it’s worth here’s what I do with unpleasant feelings: First I imagine they are a part of me representing a hurt and abandoned puppy which I could never push away Then I observe them so close as to infuse them with a sense of “I”. Not the idea of them but the actual sensation in the body is filled with “I”. And then the Self absorbs them. They integrate. When they are accepted by the Self, they loose any separate nature. You love them as Self.
Meditation means to be constantly extricating yourself from the clinging of mind. By letting go of even the thought 'I,' and 'me' what is left? There is nowhere to stand and no one to stand there. No separation anywhere. Pure awareness. Neither this, nor that. Just clarity and being. ~Ram Dass 🙏🏽
