Cathedral Valley Loop | Utah's Best Backroad Drive to see Temple of The Sun and Bentonite Hills

- Scenic doesn't begin to describe the Cathedral Valley loop, which weaves in and out of the Capitol Reef National Park. It may be the best hidden part of a National Park, best done in a 4x4 or capable offroad vehicle. On this Utah backroad, you'll see Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon, Glass Mountain, Gypsum Sinkhole and the stunning layers of the Bentonite Hills.
As promised in the video:
EASY VEGAN RANCH DRESSING Recipe
(you may want to double this...😊)
1 cup of blanched almond flour
1 cup of boiling water
Add the above to a high speed blender and let it cool. (COOL!) This softens the almond flour to get it ultra creamy and we all want that.
Next add:
5 teaspoons of white vinegar
1 garlic clove
1 teaspoon (or more) salt
BLEND. Blend some more.
The key phrase being "ultra creamy".
As you blend, have some water to thin if needed. Just add a teaspoon or so as you go because it will thin out real quick.
Get it to the consistency you want. Thicker is great for baked potatoes or making potato salad or dips.
Thinner is perfect for pouring on salads.
Add more salt if needed and some fresh pepper if desired.
Next - add a couple of big tablespoons of finely chopped italian parsley. You may like other herbs (like dill) but I have made this a hundred times and my personal preference is just italian parsley. SO good. Don't add the herbs while blending or you'll end up with green dressing.

Those Utah parks are B UTAH-full. I’m with you. The only one I haven’t done a vid on is Bryce. A very good excuse to make another trip. Did you see my Shafer Trail vid - canyonlands? That was my favorite Sunday drive of all time. 😱

Really cool landscapes out there. Glass mountain is pretty amazing. The potato salad looked delicious. Long drop down into that sinkhole. Excellent footage of all the areas. Really enjoyed the video!

Very informative and helpful. I always thought there might be a chance for a 2WD car to get to the Temple of the Sun from Caineville. It looks doable if the road is dry, but concerned about if there are sandy areas in the road. Looks to be about 18 mi. one-way from Caineville.
You’re spot on. For the most part, that initial drive to temple of the sun and moon would probably be fine. The unknown is always the dirt road. The valley area is also somewhat sandy. If you get unlucky with rain or other conditions you could always turn around.
Good video. Just one suggestion: when showing closeups of things like Temples of Sun and Moon, Glass Mountain, omit the "selfie" views and just show the geologic features. You can get in front of the camera at the beginning and end, or in different segments in between. During the food segments is a great time for self-filming.

I'm so glad it was helpful! You can see so much without having to go across the river OR drive the most challenging 4x4 roads. You might want to see Temple of the Sun and Moon while you're out there but it will take more time.

To clarify, you will see some Bentonite Hills first, then wind around for awhile through the dips and slight elevations of the land (very good, smooth drive). You will then enter the valley which features the Temple of the Sun, Moon, Glass Mountain and Gypsum Sinkhole. Then, if you keep going you ascend some switchbacks that are much more challenging (but doable). At the top you'll see the whole valley which is a spectacular view! From there, you continue and there will be many more Bentonite Hills, some that you actually drive on. The exit from this ending part of the "loop" is the river. Keep in mind that we drove this a couple years ago so conditions may not be the same. I would say that the whole thing is quite navigable even with an older 4x4. But, like I said, road conditions can change. What's great about this loop is that you can always turn around (with the exception of the switchbacks). sorry for the long response but there are TWO main areas to see those amazing hills, beginning and end. Bonus!!

Ya some of these are not natural. I’m hesitant to believe what mainstream says anymore since i’ve discovered the old world civilization of the not to distant past. I highly doubt our modern civilization can build magnificent cathedrals, temples, churches, capitol buildings, etc. because we don’t even do it now. All i see is our modern civilization building pathetic steal and glass box buildings that can’t even last a decade without maintenance. Nothing as jaw dropping as the past. The old world was more advance than we are now.
Bentonite is useful in more industries than you can shake a stick at. Medical, oil drilling and fracking, metal foundry casting, cosmetics, wine and beer making, construction, farming...

What is the time taken to enter through north entrance and see temple of sun and moon and return back. We will have very little time while driving back from Moab to Panguitch Utah.
If you enter the north entrance (same one we did), that is probably the easiest driving of the loop (as well as the valley area where the temples are). I would say you’d be in it 2 + hours. But that’s a best guesstimate. If you’re really tight, just go in and you’ll see those bentonite hills and then determine your time budget and road conditions. I hope it works out!

I was wondering if you had to air down your tires to do the CATHEDRAL VALLEY LOOP??. We tried to go down the river forge south entrance to the loop and found it to be TOO ROUGH TO ENJOY for our stock pickup with fully aired tires ... We will try the North entrance when we go back in May so we can see if its a little smoother sobwe can see at least some of that road until we decide to turn around.. Is this section, (at least part of the way to TOTS TOTM) not as rough for fully aired tires??.TIA
No, We did not air down the tires. However! The north entrance is your ticket to a good ride. You’ll want to turn around at the end of the valley and you’ll have smooth sailing (relatively). 😍. Have a blast!
