We have to stop with this narrative that Volk came back too fast (he probably did but don't think it mattered). Ilia didn't just get lucky and catch Volk, leading up to the knockout he set so many traps with feints and footwork to trap Volk. He landed his best punch, the overhand right, FLUSH on Volk's chin and Volk didn't see it coming. Volk could've taken 2 years off and he was still going down from that type of punch. Topuria is just good man and most people were late to the party.

Real, some people are acting like Ilia only won because Islam already knocked Volk out. Ilia probably would’ve beaten him no matter what. His boxing is so slick. He was getting hit by the jab, but he was waiting for it, slipped it, and then closed the distance and landed so well with such amazing timing. Volk’s defense was always suspect and I think Ilia would beat prime Volk too.

I must say Steve was speaking some facts during the “Whittaker vs Costa” segment where he mentioned the UFC turning into WWE with it being a popularity contest with title matchups. Some truth to that, we all know the ranking system is irrelevant in regards to who fights who. Fight win-streaks or even resumes don’t even seem to factor or taking into account with regards to title challenger/fight matchups. Honestly your podcast is underrated, so much knowledge on MMA and life is talked about. I love tuning in each week. Much love and always Aljo. It’s really cool that high level fighters spend their time doing this. In 94 when I started UFC there was no such thing, and it’s so cool to get the point of view of the professionals.

I couldn’t see aljo beating volk and now there’s volk 2.0 basically with nukes for hands and has good ground game, aljo needs to get his hands better better he puts himself in a spot he can’t come back from, you lose too many and you stop getting the fights you wants. He should go train with DJ, feel he could learn a lot of useful tips about closing distance better for his grappling and even using his hands better.
Herbert did very well on the backfoot though, i think it's that you shouldn't back up to the cage, that's is where Ilia is dangerous. So side stepping is crucial

I feel Volk needed to use his wrestling more like how Stipe did with Ngannou for their first fight. Khabib/Islam would have shot if Ilia was getting them to the cage - Volk needed to do the same thing rather than punch in the pocket with Ilia. If Volk had shot after the first two punches in Ilia's combo, I think he probably would have survived and frustrated Ilia more.

@19:57 bro i take that personally, i was 260 when i did taekwondo and ppl would react to my kicks like that all the time and it frustrated me, i even got into a sparring session with a 3rd degree black belt professor and i lit this guy up and there were cameras rolling, at the end he comes over and says "i had no idea you could lift your legs up that high and fast"......im like bro youre a 3rd degree black belt & underestimated me and dont think it was the style either because we had an mma guy come in there and test my standup, long story, but he ended up getting into a conversation with me and pretending he didnt know how to kick so he asked me how to do a spinning hook kick and i had someone else show him since i was watching him, so the person showed him and he came straight to my fave and said "like this?" And threw a very fast and perfect spinning hook kick and i dodged it and got to llface to face with him and pushed him off balance and told him "you know ehat youre doing" and he didnt have anything to say afterwards....point being that ppl tend to underestimate the big guys

Topuria is here to stay. Amazing watching him finally get some respect. I was blown away how many people bet against him. What’s crazy is ilia has a brother that has been signed by the UFC. He fights just like ilia. Same style. Not sure what weight class he is but from his earlier fights he looks like he will be a champ as well. Look him up.

I believe Aljamain is underestimating himself. His style vs Topuria would be somewhat similar to Yan vs Aljamain. In and out, wrestle heavy and keep him there.

Aljo, work on your hands. Train to fight boxing matches against killers like Ilia while keeping your diverse game that got you where you are. But to beat Ilia you have to make him fear you. Just train to add finishing strikes into your game. Don't gotta box him most the time but you at least gotta show him, and anyone for that matter you can put them out . Either that or up your wrestling to a degree no one can stop it. You decide what's easier

Aljo’s footwork could be elusive when he chooses to, look at the Yan 2 fight. If he chooses to keep it at kickboxing range or grappling range and not at boxing range he could get it done
I see nobody talking about this but volk is already talking about an immediate rematch in Spain already and which I understand but I think a big reason he isn’t taking breaks is because he isn’t used to losing and it’s setting something off in his head that’s not letting him live with that.

This is how it has been forever. Every champ has one skill that is above everyone else. You have grappling, izzy has striking, Islam has wrestling.
I believe both that Volk should have had a longer recovery before facing Topuria *and* that Ilia is fully capable of beating 100% Volk. I figured the fight was at least even odds from the start.

Yes Merab may have deserved a shot before this but I think getting a come out performance like that makes the fight so much bigger. That punch would have knocked out Volk after a 4,6,9 12 months break. That's how Ilia fights, he would have tried this combination in all his fights throughout all the rounds and if it touches, you wouldnt recover no matter how tough your chin is. Only chance for Volk to beat him was to keep chopping the legs and shoot takedowns. It was foolish to try to trade with Ilia especially agains the fence.
Ilia is just the perfect fighter you’d make in a lab to beat volks style. Max is what you’d make to beat ilia, styles make fights. And that holds true even at the elite of the elite of each division

Tbh man, I haven’t been able to see you beating Volk, I don’t see you being able to beat illa either. You gotta get your hands at least close to what theirs are, you got great grappling but that’s not how these fights are being won and you lost your last one to a hard, crisp puncher. Gotta get those defenses up so be able to get in to do your grappling. I’d go train with DJ (Mighty Mouse) and learn how to enter what he calls “the void” man’s a beats and I really think you can learn A lot from him.
