Man tell me about it I just got all new clippers I cut my own hair save money and I been doing it for years we got to learn how to do things and save money !
$2 for a fade in the head vs. $8 plus tip at the PX. It was worth it to me. I'd give him a $5 and it'd still be a better deal than leaving the barracks. Now my challenge is COVID-19.
You make putting in that 1st line look easy! As you demonstrate the key is to keep it low and give yourself plenty of room. The mistake newbies (and myself) make is putting the initial line too high then suddenly you're up on the dome. Great vid
leroyybrown I learned that lesson the hard way. Too many times I'd start out too high and end up having to shave it off because I didn't give any room for error!
I've been fading my own hair since I was in the military. If you learn how you will never have to wait in line at a barber shop again plus you save yourself a lot of money also. While everyone I know is either sporting a hat or having their hair woofing , I'm sporting a nice , clean fade 👍
So I just attempted this and thought I'd give a report of the experience. Viewers should know, going into this, that It isn't easy. The vlogger has been doing this on a weekly basis for years, so don't expect things to go as smoothly as seen here on your first one or two tries. It will be particularly difficult if your hair is on the long side for the first cut: the hair will tend to overhang the borders you're creating and will make it harder to see what you're doing. Fortunately, hair grows back and if you didn't do a great job on your first attempt, chances are your skills will improve in the haircuts that follow.
Damn good job! Every Monday??? Impressive. I spent 24 years in the Army, deployed with 24th MEU in Somalia if I recall. Never felt safer with the Marines on the perimeter.... I am 54 and am tired of wasting time waiting for a a haircut, and to pay a crap load more than 10 bucks! Thanks...I will give it a try and see how it goes. Thank you for your service! Many of us out here truly appreciate it....
Veteran of ARMY here, this tutorial really helped me out mate. Nie that I'm a civi, I figure I'd learn to cut own hair. Your video is top notch and easy to follow in basically 5 easy steps
good fade i cut and faded my own hair friday night and it came out just as good as a barber and i feel so happy i dont have to waste $$$ $30 $35 every time for a haircut or wait in stupid line and such, now i can cut my hair get a fresh fade every week or every 2 weeks witout wasting $$$ can be fly fresh all the time !!!
I haven't paid for a haircut since 2013. Used a similar haircutting video like this one on RUclips and never looked back haha free haircuts for life!!!
A good demonstration. For people who don’t have as much experience you can always start at the top with the biggest guards and work down. That way you won’t put in any lines that you need to get out.
Actually im very picky on how my barber does my fades,"he is not all that" most of the time i tell him one thing and he does another " as in does my fade way too high up" and i dont like when he constantly does that, my old barber for years did awesome fades but moved far with his family so i just ordered a wahl senior and wahl shaver and will be doing my own fades watching all these videos, this video is not too complicated and that fade came out spot on, i will come back to this video for my fades.
I was a military barber for 20 years. There are military barbers who are not the best at regs. Part of the reason a man comes to the barbershop is for the haircut but the other reasonnis to relax and chill out a little.
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for taking the time to share how to cut your own hair. I took it slow and followed your guidance from start to finish and ended up with a great haircut my first time during this COVID-19 pandemic. I watched many other videos, and yours is by far the best, thank you!
This is by far the very best video for a self hair cut that I have found on YT. It works for me, followed Tim's instructions to the letter and achieved success. Thank you Sir. Only thing I couldn't do was to secure a Wahl clipper, Amazon was out of stock ("unavailable"), so I bought a clipper/trimmer set on Amazon from Andis, model# PM-1/PM-4. $48.99 plus shipping and they work just fine. They too are now "unavailable" as was the Wahl. Guess I'm not the only one that can't live without my H & T every three weeks.
When I was in, I loved the barbers outside Lejeune. Speedy, nice fade, no small talk, and only $7 each Sunday. If I had a barber like that where I live, I'd no problem. But, the barbers here take way too long to cut, want to small talk, charge 13-15$ and still mess it up. Been cutting my own for years, but never skin tight. Followed this a few weeks ago and I think it would pass inspection.
I've had First Sergeants look at it and say nothing but, "nice cut." On deployment, word got around I could cut hair, and I cut almost the entire company's heads, even the CO once.
At 1st I was like man that sucks. But by the time you got to the last step it was nice. I wish you could cut my hair. Great job. I'm still scared to try it myself. What the he'll it's only hair. It will grow back. Thanks
Thanks to you I have the confidence to try this out 🙏. I can afford a haircut but it's gotten ridiculous. I pay $40 for beard and cut without tip. My hair grows back so fast
Jeez Mustafa, they're really beating you over the head. Do you go to a downtown area barber or a chain like great clips? Those prices are nearly hipster Manhattan boutique levels. I'd try going just outside of downtown to wherever the Spanish folks live and finding a Puerto Rican barber. Thanks to the dynamics of the customers and the islands ethnic makeup, your pretty much guaranteed they can cut your hair no matter the type.
I gave myself a haircut yesterday. I tried doing the guideline but it came out crooked for me. I said "screw it" and took off the guard of the clipper and gave myself an induction haircut (for those who don't know, it's the haircut that's given to the plebes in the Naval Academy), which is the easiest military haircut of them all --no fades, no tapers, no nothing to worry about--just shave off all the hair and follow the contour of the scalp. I'll wait 3 weeks for my hair to grow back, and I'll try giving myself a haircut as in the video. I just wanna see if I can master the fade.
Great job, man. Creating that temporary 'band' between the bottom section and the upper part of the head seems brilliant. It appears that you faded up into the band from the bottom shaved section using a guard shorter than the length of hair in the band but longer than the shaved part of the head, and faded the band into the upper part of the head using a guard longer than the length of hair in the band but shorter than the hair on the top part of the head. Please let me know in case I'm not understanding that correctly because fading the into both the bottom and top of the band is the biggest take home message of your haircut demonstration for me. Other videos show barbers doing haircuts and switching many guards back and forth but they don't explain much about what they are doing or why they are doing it. I think they forget what it's like to be a complete beginner. Unless I'm not understanding it correctly, you have made it very straightforward. Also, thank you for your service!
I learnt this during lock down.....& one tip would give is to use an elastic band on your head for the first cut (guide line cut :-) .....helps alot.....from one Brit soldier to another......Cheers! this vid has saved me a few quid !
I've tried it one year ago because I wanted buzz cut and I'm doing myself a cut since then. I've saved so much money! Thanks man for easy tutorial! Greeting from Poland!:)
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. This is the second I’ve used it to cut my husband’s hair. It is now saved for future references lol.
I have been cutting my hair since early in quarantine and have played it somewhat safe (doing a 1 on the sides and 2 on top; 1.5 to blend). While I have been getting better I paid this video another visit and decided to do a bald fade. I followed these instructions exactly and it turned out pretty damn good. Thanks for the video! The best video for this kind of fade I've seen and that's been a lot. The others are either too technical or just plain garbage. Thanks again!!
Semper Fi! Great fade. After I got out of the Corps I went to Barber School on the GI Bill, had my own shop until I retired. Originally from NJ, but now living in Sunny Florida, I can't find a good Barber around here. So I cut my own hair, I give myself a Bald Fade, I love short hair. Just want to comment on the way you cut your own hair, you do an excellent job, and the steps you take are exactly what I do, really good for not going to Barber School. As we always say, "Adapt and Overcome", we can do anything if we put our minds to it. Haircuts are not cheap, even on Base. I was paying $20 here with the tip, so I'm saving a lot of bucks, and I don't have to come home and recut my hair to fix what they didn't do. Take care enjoy the Corps, I loved it. I'm taking it easy now, I'm a Vietnam Vet, 100% disabled and enjoying life. God Bless.
I also have red hair. I like the hair cut you have before you started cutting it. My hair is getting a little shaggy now. When Ohio opens back up on May 1st, I will ask my barber to cut it like in the beginning of your video. Thanks for serving!
I am a female who uses three mirrors to cut my own hair. My fiance wants me to cut his hair. He wears a skin fade on the sides and a flat top. This is good instruction for cutting the sides. Thanks for the step-by-step!
This is my shaver. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My shaver is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my shaver is useless. Without my shaver, I am useless. I must shave my shaver true. I must shave straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shave him before he shaves me. I will... My shaver and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit ... My shaver is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my shaver clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will ... Before God, I swear this creed. My shaver and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!
Whoa! A mix of "Full Metal Jacket" and some other stuff? What happened to "this is my rifle and this is my gun...this one's for fightin' and this one's for fun!"
My clippers are on the way! We’re on lockdown for another month at least, so I figure there’s plenty of time for any disastrous mistakes to grow out. And I have plenty of hats.
Barbers: "we're going to make a fortune when the lockdown relaxes." Everybody else: "no more going to the barber for me, cutting hair is easier than we thought."
Thanks for the guide. Just finished and it looks just as good as you could get from sports clips. Using the mirrors was trickier than I thought but take your time and it works out.
Iv'e been cutting my own hair for over 20yrs at least once every 6wks or so.It's quite easy really and all i have is a mirror infront. It's vertually impossible to go too high as all your doing is following the shape of your head. The end result is exactly the same as in this video only difference i do a number one sides and back at the start rather than a skin fade..The more you cut your own hair the more you will save a fortune on barbers.Wahl is the best make hair clippers and i still have a pair from 2003 when i was the local barber out in the gulf cutting my military muckers bonces.......Great vid btw...
Just for info because it confused me first a bit. The numbers are always 1/8 inch. 1 is 1/8 inch. 2 is 2/8 of in inch....and so on Once you figured that out the system makes sense.
Hello I’m in cadets and we need short. I was looking and this hair cut was really interesting so I looked for a video and this is what I found. This video is awesome and so use full. This is so good I shared it with my army friends keep up the good work
Awesome tutorial, I just bought the Wahl Color Pro Clipper set recently, so excited to give this a go. I like your cut measurements, but may try a 1 on the sides and back and taper up from there, and maybe later try the closer skin fade layer-pattern.
Just did my haircut because of COVID-19. Turned out very good, the fade and its height is even better than my barbers. Watched multiple youtube videos and by far this is the best one for my hairstyle. Although I used different height of the fade on the back and different guards (1-2-3-4) it turned out very very good. I will now go to my barber when I need to do my top, but maybe I'll learn to do that as well some day. Thanks @Tim Gassman you're a true MVP in these hard times! #fuckcorona
Tips for first timers, a good self cut can take HOURS. Don't start your lowest line so short. Experiment the first few times and instead of using the lowest setting on the clippers with no guard, start with the lever fully extended. You don't have to blend every single line perfectly. Half of the time when you look at people's haircuts, you'll see their barber didn't even give them a perfect fade. Your fading skills will get better over time. Good lighting and mirrors help A LOT. I usually prop up my mirror on a stool against the wall and angle it to the side of my head that I'm cutting. My main mirror is my bathroom mirror that's over the sink. I started cutting my hair when I moved to another state and I was paying $25 for shitty ass haircuts and coming home fixing it myself. If you plan on cutting your own hair for good, invest in a good pair of Clippers, a straight edge razor, and a T-liner . I used to pay $25 every week for a cut. That's $1,300 a dam year. I didn't mind spending $100-$200 on haircut equipment to start. I've had my Oster Fast Feed for about 3 years. I put a ceramic blade on it and it's been great to me. Make sure you have a back up machine (could be a cheaper pair), just in case you drop your machine and break the blades or anything. I've had machines break mid hair cut because I dropped them and I had to whip out the cheap $15 machine I started with. You can keep backup blades for your machines, I usually don't but probably should.
You started with your hair very short on the top. As for me it’s a little longer should I use a number 5 guard and cut the top of my head before starting your tutorial thank you for any help you can give me. Also your instructions were very simple and easy to follow thank you very much for sharing.
Guys, cutting your own hair shouldn't be too difficult. Due to all the barber shops being closed, I cut my own hair at home and granted I didn't do a fade as that is not my style but I just did a number 8 all over and a number 5 on the back and sides and it looks fine. I had to get a little help with the neckline but just get a family member to help you with that. The only things to be careful of are generally to start with a higher number guard. You can always take more hair off but you can't put it back on. Step the guards down 1 at a time if that is what you are comfortable with and just take your time.
Set the Taper to low, Cut your guard line, Cut below the base line with a smaller trimmer next guard 1 which is 1/8 Taper Off and cut an inch from the baseline you made, Guard 1/16 to start erasing the lines then take 1 set the Taper to 1/2.
Tried it, now I'm praying the lockdown lasts another month.
Hats!
Hahahaha 🤣👍
Fuck that. Turn it into a competition with your friends. Like an ugly Christmas sweater, but with haircuts.

Damnit! The best comment ever!!!
This was one of the best self haircut tutorial tnx man... From Philippines
Thank you so much, I have been looking for years for a video like this
I just yolo'd this without the proper mirror set up for the back and it turned out pretty decent. Thanks for the video
My clippers are on the way! We’re on lockdown for another month at least, so I figure there’s plenty of time for any disastrous mistakes to grow out. And I have plenty of hats.
Best self hair cut yet my friend 🏆
Anyone else doing this in quarantine rn?
Tom Harris I did it last week and it was success!
you bet ! never been more satisfied !
Thanks. Simplest video I’ve found well explained. Gonna try this with beard clippers 👍🏻
Just did this. Mom absolutely loves it! Haha
Barbers: "we're going to make a fortune when the lockdown relaxes." Everybody else: "no more going to the barber for me, cutting hair is easier than we thought."
Thank you Dave Mustaine 🤘🏻
This fellow has a lot of experience and it takes a while to be able to give self a good haircut . Be careful and patient first time trying this
This was great, it will help a lot for my friend who cuts her hubby's hair!
You make it look so easy. You look like you have really good hair so that probably helps!
Thanks for your service Tim.
Did exactly how you did it and mine turned out great thanks I'm working on myself in giong into the Marines wish me luck
Good luck ;-)
damian shaw dont go to bootcamp with a high and tight, they will destroy you.
Misaka Mikoto he's probably going in a usmc shirt too
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I convinced a buddy to go into the marines with a high n tight and a army shirt on 🤣
Wanted to give 100 thumbs...but I've got only two😂😂😂 .... Thanks a lot
Lol things we do in the military to save a dime, I still cut my own hair the same way since .....that fade is perfect .
Hey I know this video was 2 years ago 😂, but just wanted to say thanks, this helped me for my JROTC high school JPA inspection.
Best tutorial I’ve seen so far
just cut mine, came out pretty darn good. It really helps to have that second mirror on the wall.
The mirror setup is crucial!
I have a VERY small bathroom and the mirrors are horrible. I would not even attempt this if you cannot see all around.
I have to thank you. This video was passed to me by a one star. Know a four star also used it. Thanks!
Wow, thank you for your comment!
Thank you very much bro, you helped me a lot.Again thanks so much from Turkey.
😂😂Everybody watching those “how to cut your own hair” because of corona😂😂
Mind ya business 😂
Damn one year ago this corona got out of hand
Just for info because it confused me first a bit. The numbers are always 1/8 inch. 1 is 1/8 inch. 2 is 2/8 of in inch....and so on
Once you figured that out the system makes sense.
I tired to cut my own hair to day and messed up so now I am going to work bald 👨🏻🦲
THOUGHT ABOUT AS WELL ANGEL
You still have work?
😂
🤣🤣
What a great haircut man. Thanks for posting his video 😊💈
Thank you for your service! Great tutorial. Semper Fi
#fuckcorona
giving myself a haircut was the best financial decision ive ever made
Tips for first timers, a good self cut can take HOURS.
Such a nice young american boy.. gentleman.. greetings from Afghanistan..
nice video, i've been doing my own but more basic than that. next time ill copy these steps
Best tutorial so far to do it at home the other that "teach you" have all this fancy machines you keep it simple
Huge money saver. Great job!
Great video Brother, with all this craziness over Covid-19 I’m certain this will be very popular!
I'm here because of the Coronavirus. Feel like this is going to be something I'll need to learn in the future...
ME TOO DAVID
Set the Taper to low, Cut your guard line, Cut below the base line with a smaller trimmer next guard 1 which is 1/8 Taper Off and cut an inch from the baseline you made, Guard 1/16 to start erasing the lines then take 1 set the Taper to 1/2.
Tim, awesome video Devil dog!! I followed your technique, it works, no more Barbershop for me. S/F
