Hillenburgs marine biologist background added so much charm to the show, and I really hate how after he left, they stopped using real marine animals on characters. so many ugly bizarre creatures in modern seasons with no basis on real life.
@@frankthomas1569 Yeah I know there are still actual marine animals like Yeti crabs and such. Hate was a strong word to use, but the show definetly moved from great accuracy to random weird puking worms and whatnot.
My favorite joke in the show is and always will be the one where SpongeBob breaks through the wall after squidward mentions Mermaid man and Barnicle boy. How Squidward says their names, the jank cg when sb pushes his body full force through solid iron, and the way the door was RIGHT THERE NEXT TO HIM just cracks me up every time.
Me too!! Definitely one of my favorite visual gags. The ominous cg doesnt fit the 2d environment at all and id say thats actually what makes it so funny to me, because its so out of place and unexpected.
@@justinqueso9644 maybe, but last i saw a pop culture reference was in battle for bikini bottom: rehydrated. I would check to see if the release dates correlate but im lazy.
I also wasn't all that fond of the seahorse episode from season 3, but the ending where spongebob says, "just get out of here you stupid animal" and patrick emotionlessly walks away still kills me
i always felt the later seasons just ignore the fact they’re underwater. the early seasons had a weird amount of world building in showing how civilisation would work with creatures that live under water.
I really hate in love with a patty. The episode with SpongeBob falling in love with a Krabby patty! And the ending?! Why the fuck did they make SpongeBob eat it?! He could've just thrown that gross patty away!
Explaining the "my leg" meme as someone who just likes a nurse at the hospital so he's constantly getting hurt on purpose to see her could have been such a great episode. Such a shame the creators had no restraint at that point
I loved that episode, watched it while I was at a hotel and was absolutely excited for it. I knew exactly what episode it was from the title, and I was all for the song.
you're so succinct at explaining everything in a condensed manner, and you chose great scenes from the episodes to illustrate your points. it's so high-paced and well-put together... i can't look away. i need to escape from this video. i can't watch it for seven hours.
Mark reviewing another cartoon that used to be stellar and has been milked dry to the point of corporate dryness for money? I love to see it. Spongebob was an integral part of my childhood, and I think I can speak for everyone that you always hit the mark (no pun intended) on your videos. Also, the amount of pain you probably had to go through while watching the later seasons is commendable so I'm glad you got through it. :)
i feel like the problem with the show in later seasons is that it starts overdoing some things an makes a lot of characters annoying which is bad when the main character is one of them. This really shines through in the squidward getting annoyed episodes, they stop giving valid reasons for him to annoy squidward and you just start to feel bad for the guy.
you slept on Krab-Borg so hard. That section with the "You've reached the navy's automated hotline" "NOT THE NAVY" and "Robots have taken over the world......... OUR WORLD!" is one of the best triple shots of jokes in the whole series.
6:33:25 Squidward staying with Plankton for the night actually sounds like a way better setup than him staying with Patrick. Plankton could exploit Squidwards ego and hate for the Krusty Krab, nearly recruiting him before the nights end but ruining it in an ironic way that ties into both of their personality traits.
5:21:00 There is justification for this episode! The context exists outside the show. This episode had aired in 2016, but the actor for Mermaid Man (Ernest Borgnine) had died in 2012, during the airing of Season 9 (Season 9 aired from 2012-2016, kinda crazy), which was also the last season Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy appeared in. Everyone working on the show knew they didn't want to use another VA for the character of Mermaid Man, so they retired both him and Barnacle Boy. So they made this episode to honor the legacy of both VAs and their time playing each character. In 2019, Tim Conway (Barnacle Boy's voice) also passed away. RIP to both of them, they're legendary.
honestly i never noticed the character shift of patrick going from dumb advice-giver to just dumb guy. really makes me wish they kept him as the chill guy
I don't know why, but as a kid the episode Grandma's Kiss always made me tear up. Maybe it's Spongebob crying about how he still wants to be loved like a little kid by his grandma, and me feeling the same.
That whole episode made me uncomfortable when I was younger, idk I find it weird that Spongebob gets unconditional love from his Grandma no matter how old he gets while everyone made fun of him for it, which the writer still includes as the episode's final punchline. Felt strangely cruel for the time
Up until about mid s8-s9 I had vivid memories of seeing every episode on TV, even how some of them were promoted. Seeing some of these episodes for the first time, especially from a show that was my entire childhood, was surreally sad.
i remember whatever happened to spongebob? being SO HYPED UP. the ads were like “OH MY GOD HE HAS AMNESIA… WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO HIM???????” & then it was mediocre as heck
@@synodicseason The one I remember being hyped the most for no reason was "It came from Goo Lagoon". I had stopped watching at that point but the advertisement made me tune back in for that one
It's insane honestly. I especially felt bad for Squidward when he got beat up in Pineapple RV because Patrick ripped the rare flower out of the ground.
I am glad that Stephen Hillenburg briefly returned to Spongebob (sadly, Stephen passed away from ALS). Dark-age SpongeBob episodes like Squid Baby are just disturbing, disgusting, and straight up wrong. I am glad Stephen Hillenburg returned and tried to fix the show from its dark age.
I absolutely love Nasty Patty just cause, like you said. It's so funny to watch Spongebob Fucking Squarepants try to cover up a murder. the expressions and the delivery that entire episode are hilarious. it feels like they had so much fun in the booth
I remember when Nick had a special where they aired every Spongebob episode in the order of fan rankings, and Karate Island was picked as #1. To this day I can't understand why for the life of me.
I remember the time before Truth or Square premiered. There was quite a lot of advertising for the special, and people at school were talking about it quite a lot. Aside from that, I never really watched any other SpongeBob event apart from marathons. Though my cousin who was born in the 90s managed to watch Shanghaied when it was called the You Wish special. Apparently he saw it on Nick, and practically dragged the whole family to the TV. Too bad I'm an early 2000s baby.
3:10:18 I will say that joke will always have a special place in my heart as it's not just a brilliant payoff for a concept that been established but it' genuinely sweet seeing Davy Jones have the time of his life with "daydream believer" playing in the background
@LSMark the face in the freezer episode is Derek Iverson. It's hard to tell due to the angle and lighting, but this was figured out through the credits. Not many people ever asked the question though, so it's a rare topic to find online
Watching this made me realise how blinded by nostalgia I was by some of the middle seasons. First few seasons were great but I remember having a season 5 box set which I'd watch over and over again and aside from a few episodes, I loved them all. Looking back I don't know how I did that-
Lol I agree, even some of the older episodes seem so weird and dumb to me now just because of nostalgia. As long as it makes me laugh, it’s a pass for me though
2:10:18 although it actually wasn’t a reed. That’s the mouthpiece of the clarinet, which has the reed on it. A reed is the wood thingy that woodwind players soak on before putting it on the mouthpiece. Btw this is coming from a clarinet player, and I haven’t heard of anyone have the problem that Squidward is having in this episode. (Edit) 4:05:28 holy shit there’s Bassoon representation in SpongeBob!
22:22 BEST JOKE IN THE ENTIRE SHOW'S ALMOST TWO DECADE AND A HALF HISTORY, *BARNONE.* A genuinely humorous piece of comedy, delivered and paced to perfection. Literally no joke in the Nickelodeon TV Series SpongeBob SquarePants ever has or ever will replicate or match the pure majesty of this laugh, and NONE of you simpletons will convince me otherwise.
The little bit of lore that Squidward used to babysit Pearl before working at the Krusty Krab is adorable. It’s nice when they can flesh him out every now and again rather than just…torturing him. I think the reason why the newer episodes are so souless is because of what you mentioned earlier with most of the current staff probably having grown up watching the show they’re making. So they feel more inclined to make call backs to moments they liked. I’m not entirely against that, but unfortunately it means that the creativity overall takes a hit. 6:31:27 This is an example (imo) of a callback joke working. It’s not going to make sense if you haven’t seen “Plankton’s Army”, but it doesn’t get in the way because of how subtle it is.
To be honest, when I was a kid, I was TERRIFIED of "Squidward in Clarinetland" and dunno why its not a well known creepypasta- shits terrifying af to a young audience, and disturbing to an older audience
1:16:25- That one is one of the most nostalgic episodes of classic SpongeBob that I remember. When I was a kid, that episode was so rare that me and my brothers would try to catch every rerun possible of it. And I remember we would laugh our asses off at that whole last third every single time.
Spongeboy me Bob……..never eat at arby’s…….. Also thanks for letting me help out with editing this video, congrats to the team for getting this done 💕💕💕
1:23:06 allegedly the mother of the child who did that lied about that on the news. The kid never even saw Bevis and Butthead and said the mother called the news before contacting the police.
I love how when he was going through the early parts of SpongeBob I could just name a quote from the episode on the top of my head. Half of me thinks it’s just because of the memes (which it probably is) but it just shows how iconic and Memorable these episodes are I’ve never seen a show have this much meme culture around it for so long and new ones still being made to this day that just shows how SpongeBob will always be THAT show for years to come amazing job Mark!
When you were speaking about the first season and how Stephen hillenburg had a clear vision you were 100% correct. There is a video on RUclips about the behind the scenes for season 1 and how it got created/green light and when he pitched the show he had pretty everything the way we see it in the show
I can't believe you didn't include the clip of the iconic line: "I was born with glass bones and paper skin. Every morning I break my legs, and every afternoon I break my arms. At night, I lie awake in agony until my heart attacks put me to sleep."
Then having a very obvious squidward trying to kys and Plankton legit laying in the middle of the road after being tortured… But PANTYS????? DISGUSTANG-
It's amazing how I've genuinely just completely forgotten the existence of so many episodes from season 5 and beyond. Even as a kid I knew things were going downhill. That's not to say there aren't some gems though, because honestly, Inmates of Summer was one of my favourites.
In 1998, a creator named Stephen Hillenburg wanted to make something creative. He created sea ocean creatures something slaright out of a show, called “SpongeBob SquarePants”. The sea creature characters were called “SpongeBob SquarePants”, “Patrick Star”, “Squidward Tentacles”, “Mr. Krabs” A.K.A “Eugene Harold Krabs”, and “Plankton” A.K.A “Sheldon J. Plankton”. He loved the characters’ and shows’ concept that he made a brand new old show that would come out after Kids Choice Awards in 1999. And in March 1999, he created a land animal character, called “Sandy Cheeks”. And in May 1999, the first episode and the pilot was called “Help Wanted”, where a anthropomorphic sea sponge, named “SpongeBob” lives in a pineapple under the sea, and he meets a anthropomorbphic pink starfish, named “Patrick”, where he lives in a rock under the sea, which sounds weird, but still. A anthropomorphic octopus, named “Squidward”, where he lives in a moai-shaped house, and SpongeBob says he’s ready and goes to a help wanted restaurant, called “the Krusty Krab”, which he wants a job there and goes in that fast food restaurant, but can’t do this, but Patrick comes in and says that he’s ready, not not ready, so he goes in there and meets a anthropomorphic red-crimson crab, named “Mr. Krabs”, where he’s the owner of the restaurant and makes burgers, called “Krabby Patties”. SpongeBob goes in and makes some Krabby Patties and the rest I can’t because I’m too lazy to do. And, that was pretty much it, and don’t forget that Squidward’s laugh is like a snorty laugh, like “A-he!” and Mr. Krabs’ laugh is like a pirate laugh, like “Argh-Argh-Argh!”. And in also 1999, Stephen wanted to create a new character, called “Mrs. Puff” A.K.A “Penelope Puff”, in which she is a anthropomorphic pufferfish who is the teacher of her school, called “Boating School”. She dislikes SpongeBob. Because he fails her boating school I don’t know which number times. So, yeah, that’s pretty much it. But, I love your rank videos, LS Mark❤
I can’t believe you sat there through season six through eight. good job. This must’ve took forever you put so much hard work into this video great stuff dude. And I can’t wait until you’re gonna be seen it as the “I reviewed every episode of blank guy”.
spongebob is a show that hasnt really rotted as badly as people make it out to be, its the kinda thing where the modern seasons arent really trying to live up to what the original 3 seasons did (because lets be honest nothing ever will) and attempt to do their own thing and its honestly really nice to see compared to other long running shows, because even if its been basically turned into a corporate entity, it still has that heart that makes it special
You know season 3 is fire when an episode as good as Krab Borg is at the bottom of the list… Seriously, I was almost getting offended at every episode that was ranked low on seasons 1-3, but then realized they were all so good it was impossible to move them up.
@@inactive3772 Love the hotel episode, and a few others from S4, but I can’t put it on the level of 1-3. Just too inconsistent overall. Seasons 1-3 were extremely consistent. I look at the bottom of the seasons 1-3 episodes list, and I see a bunch of episodes I’d totally watch in a heartbeat. Like, Krab Borg? Fucking hilarious. “Not the navy!!” Even the worst S1-3 episodes had iconic lines.
It's weird, I remember episodes like "Welcome to the chum bucket" airing a lot later, hard to imagine it's actually still considered season 2. I remember first seeing it in like 2007 or even 2009.
@DrClay999 Most of the Season 2 was aired in 2000 and 2001. However, episodes like Gary Takes a Bath, Welcome to the Chum Bucket/Frankendoodle, and Graveyard Shift/Krusty Love (in production order) were held over to airing when Season 3 was airing, with the first one airing in 2003 and the latter two being aired a year earlier.
3:01:51 when i was 10 i saw the human centipede so i agree that spongebob getting a splinter is kinda nothing, but its easy to see why the casual spongebob audience would be revolted by the sudden shift to gross-out shit
The silent episode will alway be one of my favorites. That show just never did what everyone else was doing. It was unique from day one and there's a reason it's so ubiquitous in meme culture.
In regards to what you said about Squeaky Boots, Krabs's descent into madness wasn't caused by him telling SpongeBob it'd make him a better fry cook. The descent into madness was caused by Krabs stealing the boots back and burying them under the floorboards (as a reference to tell-tell heart for some reason) and then going insane because of how miserable SpongeBob became as a result
It wasn't because Spongebob was miserable, it was because Mr. Krabs couldn't stand his guilt about lying to Spongebob and making him feel like he let Mr. Krabs down. If Mr. Krabs cared about how the boots themselves actually made Spongebob feel, he wouldn't have fried and eaten them in his manic state.
@@Square1production That's what I meant. Krabs stole the boots from SpongeBob in the middle of the night, which led SpongeBob to believe that he had lost the boots, who then became miserable because of how disappointed he was in himself for losing something that he thought was really precious
I was actually a music student under the guy who wrote Gary Come Home! He's also won a Tony and all the works, but he finds it charming that his students get so excited about a song that he made really quickly for a cartoon. Can confirm, Stew's an awesome professor :)))
Something worth mentioning is how Plankton was supposed to be an extremely minor character. In fact, his first appearance was supposed to be his only one, but Plankton’s voice actor, Doug Lawrence, loved the character so much, he wanted to include him in more episodes. In fact, Plankton didn’t officially become a main character until season 4. All together, he only appeared 19 times in the first 3 seasons. Thank Doug Lawrence for why we even have so much of Plankton in the first place.
Also, similar stories with Karen. Karen's name is never said out loud in the first two seasons, she doesn't exist in mobile form until the first movie and "Friend or Foe" and gets more personality after the first movie.
2:50:33 dude spongehenge was the scariest episode for me as a kid too, just thinking about spongebob spending the rest of his life in that cave alone and then seeing the jellyfish touring the monuments never knowing or understanding the person who made them and the conditions they worked under was way too existentially scary
It somehow brough peace to young me, like stil lscared the shit out of me as an adult though I can earnestly say that it is one of the better episodes of season 5
In poland they skipped it for some reason alongside some of season 3, we had to wait a couple years. Had to watch them on other sites because they almost never air on tv.
So in regards to “Squeaky Boots” episode you didn’t like very much, I think it’s worth mentioning it’s a play on Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Telltale Heart”. I enjoyed that a lot as a kid.
When we read Telltale Heart in my English class (I can't remember which grade I was in) I remember being blown TF away when I put together that Squeaky Boots was alluding to the Poe story. My mind absolutely burst.
I actually liked when Krabs would feel some guilt over doing something wrong, in this case taking SB’s whole pay check. They made him too cartoonishly bad later on
It’s fine mark didn’t like it and he thought characters were out of character; it’s not that anyone should have acted the way they did, for this episode it was a play on the telltale heart, so in that regard characters could/were out of character and that’s why it’s worth mentioning

I noticed that as the show went on, there were less real life picture gags. Like, instead of using real pictures of gross or icky stuff, they just drew it. For example, the episode with the ticks, they drew the ticks in extreme detail, while in the classic series, the ticks would have been footage of a *real* tick. I think that’s a reason the later episodes aren’t as funny or sureal, they lack those real life images to give it that, for lack of a better term, “fish out of water” feel
they also don't feel like characters living under the sea anymore, the new character designs and just overall premises are so out of place that it just feels like a show about nothing; in the first seasons being underwater really had an element to the scenery and situations of the episodes. For example, it would've been easy to just make spongebob and patrick addicted to... idk, lolipops or something, in the episode "hooked" but instead they used hooks to represent danger a fish might face underwater, i hope im making sense here lol
@@eyeslikeajungle No, I get it. Hell, the character of Narlene doesn't even feel like she belongs in the universe - she's just stapled onto the cast for no good reason to sell the Kamp Koral spinoff just like Maya from the Proud Family reboot is shoehorned in to fill the void of Sticky Webb after Orlando Brown's public meltdown.

A note for the beeves and butt head clip about the house fire. The kid had actually never even seen the show. His mother decided to blame that except for her bad parenting of legit letting the kid play with matches and a lighter. The creator of the show actually asked the kid years later, and is how the mothers lie got found out.
It sounds sweet that ‘Best Day Ever’ was performed at Stephen Hillenburg’s service… until you realise that out of context, that kind of gives off a different tone.
Remember:Patrick was fine with just getting a handshake, reasonable given his gift was just a little heart. But when Patrick saw Spongebob gave literal strangers better gifts, he then went bezerk.
FOR REAAL! When people remember the episode they usually seem to forget that he isn’t mad about the handshake, he’s mad about not being treated fairly for being his bestie. It’s kinda sad ;-;
@@mikethegoo ha! Yeah it's a forgettable piece of crap alright! Squidward forbids SpongeBob and Patrick to play in his yard so they dig tunnels under his house to get around this but it ends up bringing his house down and eventually the same with the rest of Bikini Bottom.
Don’t know if it was intentional, but Mark slowly starting to say SpongeBob’s name wrong and the title cards spelling it wrong, was actually pretty funny.
@@CommissarMitch the thing is that the misspelles go along with the episodes He called him Sandbob in the Sand episode Or Speechbob in the Oral Report episode And most of the time he would say his name correctly after misspelling it So I feel like it was done on purpose
@@The-Mr-Man-Man You're not alone on that. S11 ended up being my main dropping-off point with the series, mainly due to the overexaggerated animation style and Hillenburg's death though I did end up seeing three S12 episodes sometime after. (The Krusty Slammer, SB's Big Birthday Blowout, Sandy's Nutty Nieces)
@@brycefourn2001 thank you! the new seasons are so expressive with the animation and stupid faces that it becomes obnoxiously unfunny. even seasons 5-8 are funnier and more entertaining than the current ones. idk why people think new SB is having a resurgence when its even worse than the dark era, shits basically bootleg ren and stimpy now lol
Fun little fact for the episode The Sponge Who Could Fly: In the scene in which Patchy goes around and throws all the Spongebob merch and bedsheets after being let down by the walk cycles, all of that merchandise he throws around was actually all knock off's as at the time Spongebob didn't sell any official merch so all the soft toys, bedsheets and backpacks were all things they bought from stores that sold merch just to fit the scene.
2:18:00 So Tuck Tucker was a professor at the college I went to. He was just as goofy as his name implies. All around great guy. He worked predominantly with the original run of "Hey Arnold". I think there are videos of him that Nickelodeon did back in the day where he talks about & demonstrates his character design philosophy. Remember watching them on TV way back when as well. Anyways, I wanted to bring him up because, sadly, he passed away fairly recently. I knew him personally & enjoyed the time with him. He wasn't your typical professor; was definitely a goofy animator who wanted to share his passion of the craft with the next generation. I didn't know he worked on this episode in particular, but I do know he worked in a surprisingly wide amount of things. He even did two boards of "Drawn Together".
12:53 because things in the SpongeBob universe just stop existing when the writers don't need them. This applies to the drive thru at the Krusty Krab, The back door of SpongeBob's house, or even entire locations in Bikini Bottom. These objects and places only exist when their existance is necessary.
My all-time favorite moment in the series is in Christmas Who?, when Squidward, dressed as Santa, tells SpongeBob this; "I didn't bring Christmas to Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob. YOU did." It's so sincere and sweet. Props to Rodger Bumpass' amazing line delivery.
Funny, I just remembered that line earlier today! With absolutely not have watched that episode recently. I think I randomly got the Christmas song from that episode stuck in my head and then remembered the line
its one of my favorite episodes, its a weird subversion of the usual formula where Squidward realizes he was being an ass instead of getting punished for it by outside forces and he goes through a whole ordeal to rectify it that Santa himself gives his approval for his actions and his moral character.
When I was a kid, the episode “Wormy” absolutely terrified me because of the butterfly close-up shots. It also gave me an irrational fear of butterflies for about 7 years
I also got scared of it, but the rest of the episode was so good to me that I'd memorize when the bug closeup was on screen, and then cover my eyes lol
One thing I’ve noticed about the series is that, for a show that Nick corporate usually wants to be aimed at children, it’s funny that most of the celebrity guests they get (save for the celebrity call-in cameos from the 100th episode special) are semi-obscure people debatably past their prime that children likely wouldn’t know about. Compared to modern Simpsons which get major current celebrities like Elon Musk, The Weeknd, and Billie Eilish on board, SpongeBob’s feel more specifically chosen for more than just a bandwagon ratings pop, even during the mid and modern eras. Like seriously, what 6 year-old in 2009 would know about the lead singer of The Monkees lol
@@christopherminutolo9384 Nick probably just wants to get the parents and teens to watch SpongeBob again. Back when the show premiered it's first three season, it had high ratings from college kids who first discovered the show.
There were so many times throughout the video where I was like "Ok, surely I stopped watching this show at this point. I can't remember any more episodes." And then he starts describing an episode from, like, season 8, and I realized no, I still remembered commercials for this episode too. We finally hit episodes I had never heard of at S10.
I want to appreciate the fact that the staff of the show while they were naming characters they probably went: "Alright, we got squidward, Mr. Krabs, Spongebob, and plankton. But we don't have a name for that starfish." **some dude in the corner:** "yo name him patrick"
@@mikethegoo I just realized it was cheeks as in squirrels stuffing their cheeks. I always thought it was a hidden adult joke cause she lived in Bikini Bottom
Spongebob's dip in quality is surprisingly fast compared to a lot of other shows whose creators left early on. Especially when it comes to jokes and dialogue, there's something so timelessly charming and witty about those early seasons.
Yeah. Most other shows like Simpsons and Family were a steady decline. You could pinpoint the exact season where they went to shit. But it took a few years to hit that point. Even Futurama's dip in quality, while being very obvious with it's cancellation and return, wasn't like this because there were still great episodes and masterpieces in the middle of mediocre to bad episodes. SpongeBob is like instant. There's a couple S4 episodes that are decent to good. But not many, it's really bad.
As a kid “Have You Seen This Snail?” Was always my favorite episode for the sole reason of there being a scene in which they make popcorn and popcorn has always been my favorite food. What can I say, I’m easy to please
I know Mark specifically restrained from making Sonic correlations at a certain point but I find it fascinating how both SpongeBob and Sonic have the same exact problem of being way too reliant on nostalgia without understanding what actually made the good stuff work.
Also kinda similar timeline It's start most people regard as the best, being icons of their time, a bit after it isn't bad, infact having many good parts but you can still see something was up, it plummeting to such a low it's nearly a different franchise from its origins, to getting back on its feet making actually good content again for a while, to kinda just being safely mediocre to bad to the point of being just not too good. Thing is though with sonic, while the newest games might not be good, the movies, comics, and just love and content from the fans are carrying the franchise right now.
Major props to Tom Kenny for voicing SpongeBob for over 20 years! SpongeBob’s voice has definitely changed over the years, tho. In the first three seasons, it was high-pitched, but still easy on the ears and capable of raw emotion. Then after the first movie, it got even higher and sounded rather immature and juvenile, but I blame the voice direction for that, not Kenny. And besides, getting older is natural. It’s not like he can help himself in that regard. Then after Sponge Out of Water, it dropped and sounded slightly more tolerable. Regardless, it’s remarkable how Tom Kenny has managed to stick with the iconic sponge after so many years and is still voicing him today. He’s like the Mel Blanc to Bugs Bunny and Frank Welker to Fred Jones. Thank you, Tom Kenny! 🧽🫧🍦🥜🌊🏝🪸🍔
@@kassidyryzer2909 yeah wtf do the writers have to do with how the voices are directed? not even counting the fact that tom kenny himself has been the voice director since like 2016
@@kassidyryzer2909 Yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry, I’ll change it now. In some instances, it’s like Roger Craig Smith as Sonic. Most people (expect me) hate his Sonic voice for sounding, too “old”, “deep”, and “surfer-like”. But when he’s directed well, he’s sounds great!
Minor suggestion: during the end ranking put the season and episode number in the corner somewhere. It would be a fun way to see the progression from the later crappier episodes to the newer ones as you count down, as well as pointing out any stand outs. Love your content btw and can't wait to see what series you tackle next.
Something else about the “my leg” bit later on, besides being run into the core of the earth and then some, is that they don’t use the iconic voice clip anymore. Instead it’s a newer, way more drawn out and visceral one. I think that also plays a part in making it it less funny. The old one was so quick and overdramatic, while the new one sounds too much like he’s in genuine agony to be all that funny. Though I will say, since both versions are done by the voice of plankton, that guy is criminally underrated as a voice actor. He’s also Larry, the crazy chocolate guy, “HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO EAT THIS PIZZA WITHOUT MY DRINK?” All sorts of side characters. His delivery on them is just so raw, they don’t sound like any other cartoon characters even in the same show. Just shows how much having the right actors behind characters makes them so much more enjoyable.
In addition, they emphasize that Fred ("My leg" guy) is actually injuring his leg (or whatever body part he's screaming about) every time. I don't think there was ever a visible example of Fred injuring his leg in the earlier seasons. Like, he would get tossed by Mr. Krabs and while still in mid-air, yell "My leg!", or yell "My leg!" when getting sand in his eyes. I think part of the joke was the he would yell it for any situation at all, even if his legs are unharmed or that he would injure his leg in some way, but it would never be on-screen. You would just have to imagine how he broke his leg in the current situation, no matter how implausible it'd be.
Bit of a wild comparison here, but the intensity that Mr Lawrence has sorta reminds me of how wild Mel Blanc would go in some of the Looney Tunes shorts. I can really respect a voice actor that goes 150% in.

Explaining the "my leg" meme as someone who just likes a nurse at the hospital so he's constantly getting hurt on purpose to see her could have been such a great episode. Such a shame the creators had no restraint at that point

The later seasons have some good episodes, and some entire seasons are pretty decent, but yeah
We don't need to imagine if Disney owns Spongebob
@@juabenrodriguez9113 And it's a good thing that they don't own SpongeBob.
i feel like the problem with the show in later seasons is that it starts overdoing some things an makes a lot of characters annoying which is bad when the main character is one of them. This really shines through in the squidward getting annoyed episodes, they stop giving valid reasons for him to annoy squidward and you just start to feel bad for the guy.

Same
That whole episode made me uncomfortable when I was younger, idk
I find it weird that Spongebob gets unconditional love from his Grandma no matter how old he gets while everyone made fun of him for it, which the writer still includes as the episode's final punchline. Felt strangely cruel for the time
I knew it wasn’t just me haha, that episode makes me so sad for no reason

Love that clip lol. I have a friend who sounds identical to that fake Spongebob.
Up until about mid s8-s9 I had vivid memories of seeing every episode on TV, even how some of them were promoted. Seeing some of these episodes for the first time, especially from a show that was my entire childhood, was surreally sad.
I stopped watching around then too and even seeing it in HD is weird 💀

I remember when Nick had a special where they aired every Spongebob episode in the order of fan rankings, and Karate Island was picked as #1. To this day I can't understand why for the life of me.
Maybe a lot of people had a tickling fetish
Ayo what
I remember the time before Truth or Square premiered.
I cannot believe this man has watched and reviewed so many episodes on so many shows.

14:50 let’s be real here, there’s no better moment in the entire show than SpongeBob riding the freaking boulder over Squidward

I can relate to Ur name ngl
That’s interesting
I don't like seeing his first name, due to the SpongeBob credits he will always be "Mr. Lawrence" to me
I always felt that Plankton was a lesser character in the earlier seasons until the first movie
2:50:33 dude spongehenge was the scariest episode for me as a kid too, just thinking about spongebob spending the rest of his life in that cave alone and then seeing the jellyfish touring the monuments never knowing or understanding the person who made them and the conditions they worked under was way too existentially scary

Yup it's what I said to in my comment lol
I actually liked when Krabs would feel some guilt over doing something wrong, in this case taking SB’s whole pay check. They made him too cartoonishly bad later on
It’s fine mark didn’t like it and he thought characters were out of character; it’s not that anyone should have acted the way they did, for this episode it was a play on the telltale heart, so in that regard characters could/were out of character and that’s why it’s worth mentioning

Been slowly watching this video over the last 10 days. Been fun. When there's nothing to watch I just slap this back on.
Literally what I’m doing rn lmao
Ok I've finished it....now what do I do?
@@TheLonelyGoomba watch the other ranking every episode videos that he made
@@TheLonelyGoomba watch family guy's ranking video or something
@@TheLonelyGoomba Do it again
@@eyeslikeajungle no, i understand perfectly. And that example is perfect!
Copium tbh they drew gross stuck back then aswell for example that gross Krabby patty.
@@matthewmorrison3745 while that is true, it was designed to look as accurate yet disgusting as possible with the given recipe.
Tis not copium. Tis the truth!
Y'know the entire plot of Squid Baby could have been avoided if they kept Squidward in the hospital until he got better.
Or if anyone would figure out that ice is the solution.
A note for the beeves and butt head clip about the house fire. The kid had actually never even seen the show. His mother decided to blame that except for her bad parenting of legit letting the kid play with matches and a lighter. The creator of the show actually asked the kid years later, and is how the mothers lie got found out.
If I remember correctly the mother also called the news before the fire department (also nice pfp 😳)
So the girl died for that? What a way to make me really sad 😟
@@Jaysucksatshorts I really feel bad for that poor girl who had a very short life :(
I'm pretty sure it's not the easiest thing in the world to get cable TV inside of a mobile home and getting it work.
What a horrible mother
It sounds sweet that ‘Best Day Ever’ was performed at Stephen Hillenburg’s service… until you realise that out of context, that kind of gives off a different tone.
I swear to god imagine people singing happily the words “It’s the best day ever!” At your funeral😭😭😭
@@channelname99192Tbh, if I was in that scenario, it would be awesome
“I’ll give him a week.”
“I’ll give him 11 minutes.”
That joke is SO underrated, gets me every time
Remember:Patrick was fine with just getting a handshake, reasonable given his gift was just a little heart. But when Patrick saw Spongebob gave literal strangers better gifts, he then went bezerk.
FOR REAAL! When people remember the episode they usually seem to forget that he isn’t mad about the handshake, he’s mad about not being treated fairly for being his bestie. It’s kinda sad ;-;
@@b1xssom838 hampter
But on the other hand patrick isn’t entitled to get jack from SpongeBob
He gave SpongeBob a rock in shape of a heart too so…I’d say it’s fair
@@goodbye6676 Patrick wasn’t upset he didn’t get anything. He was upset he was the ONLY person who didn’t get anything.
I love that Mark keeps mentioning Patrick's barbeque in his backyard, but the one time Pat actually uses it (in The Card), he doesn't bring it up.
True lol
He keeps bringing it up? I didn't hear that... Nor does Patrick ever show it unless he needs it, I think
@@mikethegoo he brought it up when talking about That Sinking Feeling in season 7
@@ShadowtheRUclipsr523... Which episode is that again?
@@mikethegoo ha! Yeah it's a forgettable piece of crap alright! Squidward forbids SpongeBob and Patrick to play in his yard so they dig tunnels under his house to get around this but it ends up bringing his house down and eventually the same with the rest of Bikini Bottom.
Don’t know if it was intentional, but Mark slowly starting to say SpongeBob’s name wrong and the title cards spelling it wrong, was actually pretty funny.
I personally feel it is unintentional due to how many times Mark has to say the name. It is not a simple name like Homer or Peter.
@@CommissarMitch It absolutely is *not* unintentional. It's a very deliberate meme.
The SpongeBob meets the strangler was spelled as Spongerbob meet the strangler lol
aww hell nah sponacge Bob hitti n dat griddy
@@CommissarMitch the thing is that the misspelles go along with the episodes
He called him Sandbob in the Sand episode
Or Speechbob in the Oral Report episode
And most of the time he would say his name correctly after misspelling it
So I feel like it was done on purpose
I appreciate you showing us the actual funny jokes even in the worst seasons
I don't know if its good or bad that I watched every episode up until season 11 and still have seen a few after that
@@The-Mr-Man-Man You're not alone on that.
Also mark: *proceeds to show muscular Sandy*

Fun little fact for the episode The Sponge Who Could Fly:
In the scene in which Patchy goes around and throws all the Spongebob merch and bedsheets after being let down by the walk cycles, all of that merchandise he throws around was actually all knock off's as at the time Spongebob didn't sell any official merch so all the soft toys, bedsheets and backpacks were all things they bought from stores that sold merch just to fit the scene.
thats really funny
Question: How can you tell?
Anwser: His eyes are different and he wears a bow tie
Technically half true
They ARE all official merchandise but have to be altered because a show for kids cannot show/advertise merchandise in the US
Merchandise for SpongeBob started being sold at the time, but like Negi Kitsu pointed out, they had to alter it to abide by US law.
@@Negi-Kitsu Really? That's odd, given the US does it a lot and the EU is harsher on it..
Rip
Is tuck tucker's middle name tuckest?
12:53 because things in the SpongeBob universe just stop existing when the writers don't need them. This applies to the drive thru at the Krusty Krab, The back door of SpongeBob's house, or even entire locations in Bikini Bottom. These objects and places only exist when their existance is necessary.
My all-time favorite moment in the series is in Christmas Who?, when Squidward, dressed as Santa, tells SpongeBob this;
"I didn't bring Christmas to Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob. YOU did."
It's so sincere and sweet. Props to Rodger Bumpass' amazing line delivery.
Funny, I just remembered that line earlier today! With absolutely not have watched that episode recently. I think I randomly got the Christmas song from that episode stuck in my head and then remembered the line
Actually just watched it this morning!
its one of my favorite episodes, its a weird subversion of the usual formula where Squidward realizes he was being an ass instead of getting punished for it by outside forces and he goes through a whole ordeal to rectify it that Santa himself gives his approval for his actions and his moral character.
Mark: Makes a third every cartoon episode review.
Fans: “Ya’ll ready for round three.”
😳
Fourth if you count the every Disney/Pixar movie video
I didn't hear no bell.
Yes, Yes I am.
(Phineas and Ferb better be next 👀)
Spongebob is like Family Guy. Started out really good and then devolved into "Man, these out of context clips are pretty funny"
You make it sound like they're still pretty good.
@@michaelg4981 yeah
Pretty sad
@@michaelg4981for me it got worse after the 2nd movie
Family guy had a good 9 seasons tho
When I was a kid, the episode “Wormy” absolutely terrified me because of the butterfly close-up shots. It also gave me an irrational fear of butterflies for about 7 years
My sister got scared of that particular episode too. Better times…
maybe i was a weird kid but those shots always fascinated me, something about it just made me wanna look at more bugs
I also got scared of it, but the rest of the episode was so good to me that I'd memorize when the bug closeup was on screen, and then cover my eyes lol
The close-up shots were from a horsefly not a butterfly.
omg, same! I could not for the life of me find out why I was so scared of butterflies for so long, and then I remembered this episode.
Davy Jones locker!!!!!!!
I knew about David Bowie since I saw labyrinth on tv.
Unless they have bad parents, how will kids know Johnny Knoxville and Triumph The Insult Comic Dog?
@@christopherminutolo9384 Nick probably just wants to get the parents and teens to watch SpongeBob again. Back when the show premiered it's first three season, it had high ratings from college kids who first discovered the show.
Ngl I just feel like the staff do what they want.
If they want Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J to voice two singing clownfish then they will.
Nice pic
Dude. Same.
@@matthewlee4834 same, we're probably the same age and watched Nickelodeon at the same points in time
Same man..
Season 9 was when I began to not recognize the episodes.
I want to appreciate the fact that the staff of the show while they were naming characters they probably went:
"Alright, we got squidward, Mr. Krabs, Spongebob, and plankton. But we don't have a name for that starfish."
**some dude in the corner:** "yo name him patrick"
I never thought of that, but it may help that his last name is Star, like Sandy's being Cheeks

Spongebob's dip in quality is surprisingly fast compared to a lot of other shows whose creators left early on. Especially when it comes to jokes and dialogue, there's something so timelessly charming and witty about those early seasons.
Honestly yeah, I was expecting him to say S4 was actually nearly as good as 1-3 but was surprised to see how much of it wasn’t good
@@hoffer_moment Look up a list for recommendations for season 4.
The fact that me and my friends can SEAMLESSLY quote ENTIRE ASS EPISODES says a lot as to how memorable the first 3 seasons were.
@@MrSupersonic2012 the quality got ripped away like a bandage
As a kid “Have You Seen This Snail?” Was always my favorite episode for the sole reason of there being a scene in which they make popcorn and popcorn has always been my favorite food. What can I say, I’m easy to please
I know Mark specifically restrained from making Sonic correlations at a certain point but I find it fascinating how both SpongeBob and Sonic have the same exact problem of being way too reliant on nostalgia without understanding what actually made the good stuff work.
Also kinda similar timeline
It's start most people regard as the best, being icons of their time, a bit after it isn't bad, infact having many good parts but you can still see something was up, it plummeting to such a low it's nearly a different franchise from its origins, to getting back on its feet making actually good content again for a while, to kinda just being safely mediocre to bad to the point of being just not too good.
Thing is though with sonic, while the newest games might not be good, the movies, comics, and just love and content from the fans are carrying the franchise right now.
They both had a classic, dark and meta era
Could we possibly add modern post-Clarkson era Top Gear to this list?
@@thebrainnameditself9530 holy fuck youre right lmfaooo

I don't know if Mark would survive that one.
I love the art style and how the characters were portrayed in season 1 and 2, it was so charming.
yes.!!! especially in the first episode spongebob and squidward had more of a sketchy artstyle it was so nice looking.
Plus the colour scheme was so much more calming. The new neon seasons is so painful to look at
@@I.LOVE.FERRETS Man, I love the limited 3d in the show, it's so charming
What's the name of the song that plays during the season review
I wish they didn’t change it :( I honestly think it was so better. Even if I don’t consider the nostalgia it is still better.
Fred Jones is definitely as iconic as Bugs Bunny and Spongebob
@@qwerty5684 Well, next to Scooby-Doo, he is his most iconic role.
I believe the blame should go to the voice director for that and not the writers though.
YES! I was thinking this! especially since we've got those unused spaces on the side
Hella good idea fam
Wait does he rank them all together or just season by season. I’d really like to see all 276 from worst to best
Mr Lawrence and Tom Kenny were also voices in Rocko's modern life. Kinda cool that they went to SpongeBob immediately after
@@ugandahater I believe Stephen Hillenburg also worked on Rocko as well.
I can really respect a voice actor that goes 150% in.
plus, Plankton said the phrase in Pineapple Invasion, when his disguised leg was slammed on the door by Gary.
