I’ve been practicing for literally two days and these videos have helped so much can’t wait to try this out. I make time to practice after my workout in the gym with a piece of pvc pipe they have there
Got through the first half of this video thinking “this seems really familiar” then I looked at the channel and realized who this was. I trained at Asian Arts Center 5 days a week from ages 5-12, Matt taught me a ton in that time, a lot of that training was done in that very room. Glad to see he is still teaching.

Out of curiosity, would already having a similar familiarity with a staff or stick make learning some aspects of the bo staff easier? I used to do baton twirling, and I noticed that the spinning techniques are very similar if not the same.
I learned tae kwon do from a korean friend and i practiced for a long time in prison kicking and blocking and blocks and punches and the other day i told my sister i could handle 3 guys with knives as long as i had a stick to keep distance first and to work my way out of the circle second then to either run or start breaking arms and jaws with a staff. My staff was handcrafted by me, harvested from Alaskan Diamond Willow on my property, it is approximately 1 1/2" diameter and about 70" in length, have had it for over 20 years so I guess it is about time I learn to use it other than a walking stick. Alaskan Diamond Willow is so strong when the staff tips are set on chairs or other supports, a 200 pound person can sit on it in the middle and there is zero flex in the staff.

I love the bo staff because it's a weapon that anyone can learn to use properly and one of the most practical. If someone's attacking you, you're more likely to find a big stick just laying around than something sharp. So it's a very useful thing to learn.
Im a fifth degree blackbelt myself (I train in karate and taekwondo for nearly thirty years) and im particularly interested in kung fu weapons. I see Matt that you obviiusly specialize in the subject of weapons.
Got me a nice sturdy wizard’s staff for walking/hiking, just natural wood, but been fascinated with the staff as a means of defense since I watched TMNT films as a kid in the 90s (thanks, Donatello!). I appreciate these training videos. In this day and age, you can never be too careful anymore. Carry a big stick, as Prez Roosevelt said - going literal with that one!
Amazing! This technique reminds me of Naruto vs Jigen . Jigen is the antagonist who uses a Bo Staff to fight . If you run a quick search for "Naruto vs Jigen," it'll be the first result, just skip the video to 1:00 minute. Although the fight is animated, pay attention closely and you'll actually see some key moments of Jigen using his staff to defend. Very interesting.
I think this is an excellent straight to the point video! Thank you so much. I think that just knowing these techniques alone is a very good start for self defense!🙂👍👍👍 Liked and subscribed!👍
It worked! By jove it worked! The secret was "slap" grabbing the staff rather than waiting for it to strike my hand. This may not be used in combat but a spinning bow staff scares the crap out of most.

My pleasure!
I love the bo staff because it's a weapon that anyone can learn to use properly and one of the most practical. If someone's attacking you, you're more likely to find a big stick just laying around than something sharp. So it's a very useful thing to learn.
Me: doing the basics and then hits my head 20 times I don't like this
Haha. I understand! It gets better quickly though. Keep training and let me know how it goes. Thank you!
Im a fifth degree blackbelt myself (I train in karate and taekwondo for nearly thirty years) and im particularly interested in kung fu weapons. I see Matt that you obviiusly specialize in the subject of weapons.
Thanks Nicholas. Yes I have a deep passion for sticks as self defense tools!
Thank you.
This is a true gift and will be used as a way of improvement in anyone's life and self defense.
I'm subscribing because Matt's an excellent instructor! I'm looking forward to learning more!
Thank you for making this video! Looking forward to learn the bo more from your channel!
Thanks for being here!
Recently taken up Bo as a form of exercise after my medical condition got worse already loving it not 24 hours in.
Fantastic! Keep training!
Thanks. Welcome!!
It worked! By jove it worked! The secret was "slap" grabbing the staff rather than waiting for it to strike my hand. This may not be used in combat but a spinning bow staff scares the crap out of most.
Thank you. I’m so glad it worked for you!
Thank YOU love everything about this vid the explanation slow mo absolutely everything
Violence is vulgar the Martial arts are about balance of spirit over body You are true master both
I have had a staff for some time now, but did not know how to begin. These are good training tips; I will give them a try. Thanks!
Awesome. Keep in touch and let me know how it goes! Merry Christmas!!
@@pasquinilli Thank you. You have a Merry Christmas also.
That was a grand video. As a drummer I understand the sticks and the spin. You made it easy for me to understand spinning a bigger stick. Thank you! 😂
Just ordered my bow staff. Thanks for teaching the basics
Thank you. You're very good at teaching. Simple, defending and killing, not dancing as my japanese karate used to tell to their pupils.
Thanks! That’s how I like to be taught too! Keep training!
Just ordered my first Bo. Very excited
Awesome. Congrats! Let me know how it goes!
This is great. Just bought a Bo staff to learn as a hobby but you make me want to train under a waterfall.
Do it! So peaceful!
