I am having a real problem with the figure 8 spin. I do not think I am turning the staff correctly. Even in your slow motion mode you give here I can grasp the manner in which to spin the staff. I have tried pausing the demonstration periodically throughout the demonstration but can not understand how it is spun. Do you have anyway to help me out with this?

I learned tae kwon do from a korean friend and i practiced for a long time in prison kicking and blocking and blocks and punches and the other day i told my sister i could handle 3 guys with knives as long as i had a stick to keep distance first and to work my way out of the circle second then to either run or start breaking arms and jaws with a staff. But i thought huh theres got to be forms to learn with the staff and was very glad to find your video. Proper form and practice helps alot in a fight. Not using form but having the reflex memory. My reflexes are lightning fast when im mad or my back against a wall

My staff was handcrafted by me, harvested from Alaskan Diamond Willow on my property, it is approximately 1 1/2" diameter and about 70" in length, have had it for over 20 years so I guess it is about time I learn to use it other than a walking stick. Alaskan Diamond Willow is so strong when the staff tips are set on chairs or other supports, a 200 pound person can sit on it in the middle and there is zero flex in the staff.

The Bo Staff is my favorite martial artist weapon because, its all about discipline, smooth fluid like motion and crashing attacks. Makes you really apply what Bruce Lee was trying to teach us,
    Bruce lee-
"Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

I love the bo staff because it's a weapon that anyone can learn to use properly and one of the most practical. If someone's attacking you, you're more likely to find a big stick just laying around than something sharp. So it's a very useful thing to learn.

I appreciate these training videos. In this day and age, you can never be too careful anymore. Carry a big stick, as Prez Roosevelt said - going literal with that one!

Amazing! This technique reminds me of Naruto vs Jigen . Jigen is the antagonist who uses a Bo Staff to fight .
If you run a quick search for "Naruto vs Jigen," it'll be the first result, just skip the video to 1:00 minute.
Although the fight is animated, pay attention closely and you'll actually see some key moments of Jigen using his staff to defend. Very interesting.
