Thank you for teaching me how to use the thinning shears properly. I tried it today, it is such a vast improvement than the last time I used it incorrectly.
I started cutting my own hair a few years ago when my stylist said she "didn't know how to cut a shag" haircut, and she suggested I find a different stylist who knew how to do it! (Can you believe that? She didn't even try to learn how to do it.) Anyway, I learned how to do a bit of a shag on RUclips and have been following that style every time my hair gets a little too long since. However, I also have a lot of thickness in the hair on the back of my head which the haircut I've been using from RUclips does not address. So I went looking for videos on RUclips to learn how to texturize properly (I already have a pair of thinning scissors but I wasn't sure if I was using them correctly). Lo and behold! I found your video that in clear, simple language and demonstrations showed me exactly how to do it right. Thank you so much!
The head pounding killed me LOL. This is exactly what I needed to see, and exactly what my 11 year old needed to see to be reassured that she will not be left short-haired or bald. Thank you!
Thank you for making this video. I was on chemo for a while. Unfortunately, it took a toll on my natural hair. However, I purchased a wig (not a cheap one) and it was too thick which made it look fake. Taking a wig to have styled (cut) is very expensive. I used your technique and it came out fabulous. Oh yeah, my hair was was messed up with thinning shears years ago,. Also my entire hair was ruined by a razor and also supposed point cutting, which was done about an inch from my scalp. Thank you. I just cut my daughters hair. I also went to beauty school in 1980. I was never taught how to use them. Her hair is so thick. The cut came out beautifully! ❤️👍😊
@@allabouthairwithdanise ooooooh okay, I gotcha! I'm cutting today. Been watching tutorials all morning. My hair is to the middle of my butt. It's boring blanket hair. It's supposed to be nice and wavy but is dry and frizzy. My plan is to start by a good wash, condition and leave in conditioner, then roughly follow the brad Mondo tutorial on a butterfly cut to give some layers and remove any dead ends, then go in at angles with thinning shears to soften both cuts, take down, make any more cuts, then dry, THEN go into different sections to soften the look, maybe give it a little bit of a shag vibe. Then on my bangs I wanna do a side swept look, but shorter and feathered keeping the wispy tapered layers on the side of the bang. I've done it before and it took me 4 or 5 days 😭. But I am just honestly so tired of spending way too much money only to be downright sabotaged by these female hairdressers! The older women are super nice, but can't nail my style while the ones my age or younger are just so petty I have actually had to walk out with my hair started on just because it was so terrible I couldn't have them ruin it all. Any time a gay man has done it it's been really nice but at this point, mine died and I just started doing it myself. Hey, at least if I give myself a bad haircut it's free.
@@allabouthairwithdanise WOW.... Hours later and not done yet, but it's gonna look great! Still cutting bottom layers. Like everything I made it 10 times more complicated but I am very happy so far. Thanks for the help
I literally did everything you said not to do and my hair is still so heavy I feel like cutting it all off it's frudtrating. I'll try cutting more layers and this technique
Thanks for the helpful info ! I cut my own hair,. For years, its always been very thick. Long ago I good friend & my hair guy always used thinning shears after my cut. It really lightened up my head and was much cooler in summer. Now I finally bought a pair, will try now after watching ur video. Thanks very much. 1 question. Can your hair get thicker as you age! Mine seems to. But also front top is receding some, at 63 y o.
I'm so glad I was able to find this video you explain it so well. And I have a question 😊 I'm biracial & have thick wavy curly hair what is the best scissor size for my type of hair to thin out. Thank you😊
Hi there! I would pick thinning shears with 20 or less teeth. But please be careful. It’s very easy to over-thin your hair. Make sure to do vertical sections, angle your shears and check after each cut. Also, remember the half-length. Thanks for watching! 😊
I love the way you hammered the dummy into the chair 😂😂 by hitting her on top of the head 😅😂. By the way superb video , I gonna get one scissor because I trust everything you said , I got from this video ! Big thank You , you are a brilliant teacher ❤❤❤❤🎉⚡️✋🤗
In this video, I did not specify. However, if you have the seriated edge facing down, it forces the hair movement that direction. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@ch1766 I believe the serated edge is on top, the straight blade is on bottom. And you cut at a 45 degree angle tilted downward, the direction your hair grows
My thinning shears have teeth on both sides. They do a good job of blending and don't leave cutting lines. I didn't realize that when I bought them years ago.
How do you compress hair strands? My hair really turns into a very wavy and uncompressed, it wasn't like this before combing it doesn't help it only adds volume 😭
If you have curly/wavy hair, do not brush or comb it after it's dried into it's natural state. It will get bigger. You should use your fingers to rake through it, only after using something to control (compress) the wave pattern...like a gel. Not mousse. Hope this helps. Check out my video on how to use the diffuser...it has some tips for wavy hair in there too.
That’s fantastic! One of my shears is over 20 years old, never sharpened. One of my favorites. If you take good care of them, they last. (Wipe, dry and oil). It also depends on how often you use them. Thanks for watching! 😊
Glad to help...the shears have a side with a straight blade and a side with notches. The notches push the hair through, so the straight blade can cut the selected hairs...depending on how many notches and how wide apart they are will determine how much hair gets thinned or cut. I think I might need to make a slow-motion video on this. 🙂 Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
My granddaughter has the thickest hair I have ever seen! She has always had a very tender scalp and it is super easily tangled. When she was small I thinned her hair with this kind of scissors and it worked just fine. Right now its long and all one length and is an every day tangled mess its a huge problem. My question is can I use this technique on her without creating a lot of short pieces throughout? My fear is that the short pieces will tangle with the long hairs making a bigger tangled mess! Please advise 🙏🏻 TIA
You are correct in your thinking. The shorter strands could possibly make the tangling worse. You did not mention if her hair is curly, wavy or straight, however I advise using a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is on her hair in the shower. And then when she gets out out, DO NOT wind the hair up in a towel or briskly dry with towel. Just blot it dry with the towel, and then comb through again. She might need to spray a detangling spray on her damp hair beforehand. Thanks for watching and good luck! Let me know if it works.
I'm a brand new stylist, I've only been doing it for 2 months professionally and I took a chunk out of someone's hair today at work. She had very thick coarse hair and I just took my thinning shears to the back top layer of a big chunk of her hair and it was sticking out and looked awful.
I got my hair cut this past Tuesday and the stylist used texturizing shears on my hair. The next day when I washed and dried my hair, I noticed a difference and did not like the new look the stylist gave me with the texturizing shears. I usually like my hair having body and now it doesn't. I'll have to wait for my hair to grow out. I asked for a lightly layered (meaning long layers) bob and now it doesn't look layered to me.
I’m sorry that happened to you. It’s true, thinning shears don’t always need to be used to achieve the desired result. Some stylists use them when they don’t know what else to do. Luckily, Hair does grow back. I know that doesn’t help your current situation. Have patience. Hang in there. 💕
@@allabouthairwithdanise Thanks for your advice. I'll wait until my hair grows out to get it cut. I will have to tell the stylist NOT to use texturizing shears the next time I get my hair cut.
Thank you, I’m a little confused, as the thickest, bulkiest area is above halfway up from the bottom, which is the area I want to thin out, and thus keep the bottom think. Am I perhaps not understanding? Also, can this be used on thick frizzy waves / curly hair?
@@babushkamart totally understand. I get it. The thickest feeling part is closer to the scalp, however if you thin too much in that area, your hair will stick out and you will compromise the shape of the haircut. Can you thin the hair in this area? Of course. But go slow. Check after every cut. The half way mark is the foundational rule. When you know the rules, then you will know when to break the rules 😉 Thinning is usually not recommended for frizzy hair, because it could cause more frizz, but it can be used for wavy hair. Good luck. Let me know if it works for you. Thanks for watching. 😊
To be honest, I’ve never worked with wigs. I personally wouldn’t cut at the base. But maybe try it at the nape area, to be safe. Good luck and thank you so much for watching. 😊
When it comes to thinning hair, less is more...meaning, don't over thin...Frizzy? Do you have curly hair? It may be caused by the curl pattern not having enough weight to it now and is curling up a bit more.
I have thick wavy hair. I find the thinning shears cause my hair to become frizzy, especially in hot m, humid weather or when I get sweaty. What is the best technique to thin out my hair type without causing frizz. Thank you!!
This can be true for individuals with a frizzy hair type. This happens because you are shortening the hairs...and those shorter hairs react differently, because they don't have the weight of length to help control the frizz. A couple of things I'd recommend: make sure you are not thinning more than half the length of the hair...and make sure you are using products that help weigh your hair down a bit and protects it from the humidity. One of my favorites is Eufora Smoothing Oil combined with Eufora Behave. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
My stylist thinned my hair at my scalp without asking. Now my hair is so thin that I can see my scalp... I can't style it or even put it up. Am I out of line to talk to the owner?
Wow Sarah, I'm sorry to hear that...you would not be out of line to talk to the owner. Just think about what you want out of the conversation first...do you want your money back? Do you want the owner to talk to the stylist about her skill set? It is so frustrating for you, I'm sure...in the meantime, make sure you're taking vitamins for your hair growth...also, there is a product - Vegamour - that works really well. It's drops that you put on your scalp to help with hair growth. Wishing you the best...❤
No dumb questions...hope this helps...thanks for watching When holding your thinning shears, you should have the teeth facing upwards towards the ceiling and the cutting blade facing downwards to the floor. When holding these on the side, the thinning scissor teeth should be facing outwards. The cutting blade should face inward.

You should use your fingers to rake through it, only after using something to control (compress) the wave pattern...like a gel. Not mousse. Hope this helps. Check out my video on how to use the diffuser...it has some tips for wavy hair in there too.
🙏 thanks ❤️❤️❤️
Super helpful! Thank you lady 😊

I bought good hair cutting shears with thinning shears for 20 bucks on Amazon. Still have them and they're still sharp.
That’s fantastic! One of my shears is over 20 years old, never sharpened. One of my favorites. If you take good care of them, they last. (Wipe, dry and oil). It also depends on how often you use them. Thanks for watching! 😊
I wish you would explain what part of the thinning scissor actually cut and how much does it cut?
Glad to help...the shears have a side with a straight blade and a side with notches. The notches push the hair through, so the straight blade can cut the selected hairs...depending on how many notches and how wide apart they are will determine how much hair gets thinned or cut. I think I might need to make a slow-motion video on this. 🙂 Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
very helpful, thank you !

Please advise 🙏🏻
TIA
Oh no! I hope everything turned out okay.
Thanks for the video!!

When you know the rules, then you will know when to break the rules 😉
Thinning is usually not recommended for frizzy hair, because it could cause more frizz, but it can be used for wavy hair. Good luck. Let me know if it works for you. Thanks for watching. 😊
My friend wants her hair thinned..Im glad I watched this because I would have started @ the top then down!! Oh no! Glad you schooled me!
Hope it helped and your friends hair turned out okay. 😊 thanks for watching.
Exactly what I was looking for thank u
Thank you for sharing NOW I KNOW🥰
I saw the cut at base technique to use for wigs. is it safe or should I do the way you did it for my wigs?
Thank you
To be honest, I’ve never worked with wigs. I personally wouldn’t cut at the base. But maybe try it at the nape area, to be safe. Good luck and thank you so much for watching. 😊
Thank you for your reply:)@@allabouthairwithdanise
HELP! My human hair topper is too thick and bulky at the crown. How do I remedy that if I am not to use thinning scissors at the base?
@@Clouds457 you could deep point cut or use a feather razor to slide cut and texturize. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 😊
Back when I had a barber she used to cut it all the way across as if they’re regular scissors. Can I do that too?
If it works for the look you’re going for, you sure can. Thanks for watching. 😊
What do I do if I over thinned me hair now its very frizzy
This might be a dumb question but which way do I hold the scissors? Teeth on top?
No dumb questions...hope this helps...thanks for watching
When holding your thinning shears, you should have the teeth facing upwards towards the ceiling and the cutting blade facing downwards to the floor.
When holding these on the side, the thinning scissor teeth should be facing outwards. The cutting blade should face inward.
@allabouthairwithdanise oh my gosh thank you so much 💖 💗 u r so helpful!!! going to give it a try tonight on my daughter so fingers crossed 🤞 😊😆
