- As you prepare for the AP Lang exam, don't try to memorize a bunch of "fancy" sounding rhetorical choices. It's actually better to stick to some of the classics. This video covers the most common rhetorical choices and offers tips for writing about them.

Just seeing this makes me wonder how many great teachers have work like this but it never sees recognition due to them containing it to their students or even further less
Thank you!
Exactly.
This was exactly what I was looking for 2 days before the test! We haven't done rhetorical analysis thoroughly in class for months. Thank you so much!
Glad to know it was helpful!

when we are writing the rhetorical essay, can we say "they" or "their"
When referring to the author? Typically you want to refer to them as either he or she; however, I know some students prefer to use the term they. For grammatical purposes, I would say he or she, but that is my opinion.
It's 12:50 and I'm just chilling here, 10 minutes before the exam LMAOO

Excellent video and very helpful to a brand new AP Lang teacher. I think the point about students applying the rhetorical terms they have learned- e.g. "the author appeals to the reader's sense of logic" rather than saying, "the author uses logos"- is great advice. You want to genuinely show your knowledge and not give it a gimmicky, name-dropping appearance. And it is all about what any individual text is doing, as you say- noticing and commenting on patterns, broadly speaking, and how these create meaning and impact on an audience (also identifying striking or unique moments of a text). Also, rhetorically active verbs, man, that is gospel truth right there.
Glad to be a subscriber to your channel now, Coach Hall!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Any way I can get ahold of this PowerPoint so I can reference it quickly by ctrl+f in the exam?

Tell me why the june test date looking kinda good rn
I'm decent at essays, but I'm certainly not good at them when under a time crunch. Would it fine for me to write a 4 paragraph essay with 2 body paragraphs and explain 2 rhetorical choices in each one instead of writing 3 body paragraphs? Also this video was super helpful, thank you! :)
Yes, you don’t have to have 3 body paragraphs, especially if it is forced or if it means under-developing your ideas. You could also do 3 body paragraphs and no conclusion. I demo this in the “write with me (part 2)” video I uploaded earlier today. (Part 1 is about annotating.)
You are seriously helping me so much! I’ve always been told to write full 5 paragraph essays, even if I don’t have the time and would therefore make my arguments more weak. Your info is helping me with some last minute studying! Thank you!!!
I take my test in an hour and this taught me more than what I did the whole year ,thank you.
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Good luck to everyone taking the test today. We got this and we're gonna do absolutely great!
thank you SO MUCH FOR THIS. in my class, we mainly focused on categorizing the audience and the speaker’s ethos (practical wisdom, disinterestedness, virtuousness), so i needed to relearn a couple of these. thanks so much!
Glad it helped!
These videos are so short and sweet it gets right to the point. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE TMO

I wouldn’t say that I Learned more in this video than in my entire year of AP Lang. I would say that this video has helped me refine what I learned in AP Lang and has allowed me to further develop my Skill in writing rhetorical analysis’.
Glad to hear it!
These videos are an amazing resource! Since the AP exam is coming up in a few days, could you maybe post a comprehensive final review/tips or maybe live stream to wrap everything up? Thanks and you are the best!
Yes, I’ll work on that. If there is enough interest and I am able to, I’ll got live. Otherwise, I’ll record responses to questions.
Watching this before my AP Lang test!
coming back to this video to say THANK YOU! I got a 5 on my Lang test and I owe it to you and this video😭💗💗💗

Hey Coach Hall! Thank you for really being a beacon of hope for us during online schooling 😇, But when picking your thesis, could you say The author embeds (Logical, Emotional, Credible) appeals, then talk about all the devices he/she uses to create that effect? Or is it the other way around? Also, when you say the author uses allusion or repetition, how can you really give deep analysis of that since it’s just one single choice
I would probably say that the writer “provides facts to create a logical appeal” or “by providing facts such as..., the writer logically conveys that...” Allusions are something tricky to develop. The Abigail Adams prompt has a metaphor and allusion. Some students group them. Others analyzed them separately. Either way is fine as long as your develop your ideas. With repetition, think about why that particular phrase matters, so you’d examine the word choice and tone. You could analyze the effect within the speech. Does it create coherence? A cadence? Does it reinforce a particular idea? Why does this matter to the audience? How does this help the writer build his message? Why is this relevant for the historical context?
Coach Hall Writes Ohh ok that makes a lot more sense, Thank you!
I swear online classes is just not for me. Thanks for the videos it was pretty helpful since English is my second language I have been struggling a lot
Just want to take the time and say thank you for this video, I learned more from this video then I did in my actual class, I’m definitely going to watch when writing my essay. Once again thank you and god bless🙏🏽

Thank you so much!
Coach Hall, could you probably make a video of yourself composing a rhetorical essay using these strategies. It would be much more helpful if we can get an examplar, most of us are visual leaners. Like explaining how to go through a math problem, only difference is you breaking down the process in a rhetorical essay.
I’m working on a video a video like this. My hope is to have it ready by Monday, possibly sooner.
Thank you so much, we really appreciate your hard work and dedication. You've been many students hero during this period of the pandemic, I wish you the best. And once again thank you. Pardon any grammatical errors, English was not my first language.
What verbs should we use instead of “uses” when we are saying that the “author uses (whatever rhetorical device)” ?
I’m going to film a video about this tonight and have it uploaded by the morning. This is a popular question. Sorry it wasn’t addressed in the video.
Coach Hall Writes alright thank you
I'm actually grateful I wasn't taught these definitions in class, just so I'm less tempted to unnecessarily name-drop.
LOL my exam is in 2 hours great review!!

This video was very helpful. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for this video. In the class they put so much emphasis on the effect that we have to analyze, but I feel as if most teachers fall short on explaining how to do that. All of those gaps were filled in this video :)
Glad to hear it! Thank you!
thank you for actually teaching
Lol thanks!
Does logos necessarily have to be stat or can it just be a logical argument. For example, the author explains how he is gonna rebuild somethings and cites the text and the outcomes. Is that considered logos because in many of these practice test there are more logical processes.
Logos can be stats, facts, conditional sentences, etc. It doesn’t have to just be stats. The key is to figure out what the writer is doing to make it logical or reasonable and why. So in your example, it seems “citing” would be a good verb to use if the writer is bringing in outside info to make his/argument more logical. Then you’d want to think about why he/she did that and how it impacts the purpose and/or message.
I’m really confused about the thesis, I have a question, is “The author achieves her purpose of...(state the purpose)... through the use of (do we plop in 3 rhetorical devices here??) appeal to fear, anecdotes, and wit” pls respond as soon as you can I feel like this will really matter if I do well on the ap test, ( so basically my future, butterfly effect)
The thesis needs to identify the choices and purpose. What you wrote is one method of doing of that.
Coach Hall Writes thank u will be using this on the ap exam
I have been watching a lot of your videos to review for the AP Lang exam. Thank you so much!! :)
Thanks for watching! Good luck!
Hi Coach, so about what you said at around 1:53, if we know the name of the device, we should still just explain what is being done rather than just simply stating the name? What cases would the name of the device get the message across better than explaining its function? And btw, thank you so much for this video! It's super helpful after having gone a semester without an AP Lang class!
I tend to prefer that students use a verb to describe the choice rather than a noun. Devices are normally nouns. You can still use the device name, especially if you are trying to save time and don’t know what else to say or if you feel like you already used the verb multiple times for some reason and want to add variety.
amazing, thank you. wrote an outline for myself for the essay tomorrow.
Good luck!
When describing the effects of using statistics for example, could you say that tool appeals to the ethos or credibility of the author since it makes him/her appear more rationale and factual ? Thanks !
Is there PDF or a copy of this on slides, would be very much appreciated and help me for the AP Exam, again thank you for this video you really are a significant factor of why many of us will get high scores (hopefully 😔) on the AP Exam
If you email me at coachhallwrites@gmail.com, I can send you a PDF of the slides. Please just let me know which video you'd like the slides for. I'll do my best to reply promptly.
The incredibly loud bell ringing at the start of the video hits different at 3am the day of the test
Lol sorry!
Ya the bell is loud lol
Is this like the SAT essay. I’m not in AP LAng but I’m taking the test. I seem to be good at the SAT essay so I’m wondering if the structure is the same
Yes, both are rhetorical analysis.
I just realized the SAT was a rhetorical essay as well. I now have more hope for myself.
you are awesome, this video is extremely helpful!!
Thank you!
Hello do you recommend writing three paragraphs or two paragraphs? How many pieces of evidence do we need to use per paragraph?
Readers look for quality over quantity, so don't force three paragraphs if you only have time for two. The goal is to develop your paragraphs as thoroughly as possible. As far as evidence, you want to create layers of evidence and commentary within your paragraph, so you'd like need two pieces of evidence or more. It depends on what you're writing. Evidence can be a direct quote or paraphrase.
Anyone else here before the 1:30pm check in time for the AP Lang exam?
For practice essays, my teacher often gives me all of the points except sophistication. How would you suggest getting it on the exam?
I have a separate video about sophistication that might help.
Awesome. Thanks!
Hi! I love your videos, and I do have a question: So my teacher encourages us to separate the passage into 3 different parts and then use those parts to analyse for our body paragraphs. My question is if I used contrast (or any other rhetorical devices) for one of the body paragraphs, and I could only find 1 quote in the first section of the passage I divided, is it okay to go, say, to the third section of the passage and use a quote from there? Or should I only stick to the parts I divided for each body paragraph?
Good question. In theory, yes if you transition well within your paragraph. I tend to like students to divide the essay into parts as well. You could also look for related choices within that section. Or depending on the choice, you can analyze the word choice and/or tone or appeals created by that choice.
how much do you think skipping a conclusion would hurt? with timing i can pump out an intro and 2 body paragraphs, but i either don’t get to the conclusion or it’s very brief and underdeveloped
If you can write a short conclusion, that’s fine. The College Board said that an incomplete essay can still score well if written well.
If it comes down to developing a body paragraph or writing a conclusion, I’d choose the body paragraph because of the evidence and commentary portion of the rubric.
I mean conclusion isn’t part of the rubric 👀
These videos are great! Keep up the good work.
Thank you! This video helped me a lot!!
Hi,so at 5:50 you say to not outright say logos.Do this mean we shouldn’t outright write any rhetorical devices and instead use synonyms?
You should say logic or explain the choice that creates the logical appeal, such as facts or stats. I’m working on a quick video to clarify. It should be up by tomorrow.
Coach Hall Writes ok,so say instead of saying pathos I should say by using the appeal of a certain emotion?
Thank you for posting this !

Dumb question, but is it required to have 3 body paragraphs or can we use 2 on the exam?
You can have 2 or 3-whatever you have time for and/or whatever best fits your essay. Don’t “force” 3 if it means under developing your ideas. Developing your paragraphs is more important than having more paragraphs. (Quality, not quantity.)
Coach Hall Writes Thank You!

Thank you!
I have a question regarding the multiple choice grammar part. Which lessons from the grammar book do I need to focus on?
Check out this video here for writing MC tips: ruclips.net/video/RmstA_tuKhg/видео.html
wait so how many pieces of evidence must we have in total in our essay ?
Usually students include two layers of evidence and commentary per paragraph. So if you have two body paragraphs, you’ll probably have at least 4 pieces of evidence, possibly more. It can be a direct quote or paraphrase.
"where is the juxtoposition!?" felt that 😂
Hello! This video was really concise, definitely helped a lot! I was wondering if you could clear up a question I've had since watching Collegeboard's thesis review where they were really picky about rhetorical devices v rhetorical strategies - can we use ethos, pathos, logos or tone as the focal point of one of our essay body paragraphs? In other words, as long as I explain how the author is appealing to logos through statistics and how that drives their argument, is that ok if we can't find something else?
Great question. This is a topic of conversation among AP Lang teachers. It’s confusing. The most helpful explanation I’ve heard is to avoid saying “uses logos,” etc. Be more precise. Rather than having an appeal or tone be your major choice, examine which choice is creating that appeal or tone. You can still mention the appeal or tone, but recognize that something else is creating it. For example, perhaps a certain type of diction or the contrast of certain terms creates a patriotic appeal. Or maybe the use of examples allows the author to logically assert his/her argument. I hope that makes sense. Think about how the author creates the appeal or tone and analyze that, while still mentioning the appeal or tone. However, if you are under pressure and cannot think of what to say, please write whatever will help you best express your ideas on the day of the exam. Something is better than nothing. While there might be preferred practices, your essay is essentially a rough draft. Develop your ideas as best you can.
Ok, that makes sense. Thank you so much!
@@CoachHallWrites Wow, that was a great answer. Basically, dig deeper and ask HOW the author create the appeal. This is THE recipe for virtually all sorts of analysis essays. Thank you!
Hi, does anyone know how much they take off for grammar mistakes? I read back through my essay and realized I made a few silly errors but everything else is pretty much on point.
It should not impact your score. As long as your essay is readable, it is okay if there are some typos or punctuation errors.
Coach Hall Writes Thank you! That is such a relief! I owe you a lot for all of the help you have provided. I do believe you’ve been given a gift to help students :)
This is actually great!!
such an amazing video thank you
Good luck! Thanks for watching!
this is so helpful thank you!
So when I mention in the thesis for example that the author uses comparison this includes yeh metaphor, simile, analogy etc?
Yes, you can say the author compares "this" and "that," for any type of comparison. That's usually stronger than saying "uses a metaphor," but that is acceptable too.
Hi would u be able to look over my essays because I have been struggling a lot

I have a question what’s going to be on the exam as in the amount of essays and if there are going to be a multiple choice section I haven’t found an answer to that yet.
One rhetorical analysis essay - 50 minutes total.
Coach Hall Writes thank you !
Why would you say to avoid "uses", "utilizes", or "employs"? What would you do alternatively?
They aren’t specific enough. It’s sort of like if I said “go use this soccer ball.” Do I mean juggle, dribble, shoot, pass? It’s too vague. Instead use the verb of the choice. So if it is an appeal, instead of “uses logos,” say “appeals to logos.” Better yet, ask yourself what is creating the logical appeal. For example, by incorporating statistics... (this would imply logic.)
@@CoachHallWrites Okay I see what you're saying. But if I want to include diction and tone, how would I be able to incorporate a verb into those? I can only think of utilizes and employs for those rhetorical devices.
