Why I didn't want to post an off road wrecker games video

  • There's a lot of strategy that goes into posting RUclips videos, and I knew that holding off on posting the wrecker games videos was going to cause them to get lower than average view numbers, while allowing those that "broke the rules" to capitalize on the opportunity to get absolutely massive view counts on their relatively small channels, giving themselves a huge boost in the RUclips world.
So I went down there putting very low priority on filming for my own channel, because I knew the videos that came from it have little value. That's nothing against the event itself, as it was great and the @MattsOffRoadRecovery team did an awesome job putting it on, especially for their first event being so big.
The unfortunate thing about RUclips, is that to be successful on the platform, you have to play the RUclips games. And that meant that the only way I was going to get this video to have a decent view count, would be to give it a title and thumbnail that insinuates controversy, and incites curiosity in a bit of a clickbait-ish way. I hate clickbait, but with the way youtube works, you basically have to push that envelope a bit or you will never succeed.
I was unsure if I was going to post any videos from the event at all, but I've had enough people ask for it that I decided to go ahead and post one. I'm still uncertain if I'll post any footage from the other two days, and haven't even looked at the footage. I know I don't have much of anything from day two, since I left a couple hours into the day and missed most of the event, but I guess I'll look and see what I have.
Now comes another RUclips strategy thing, where I tag a bunch of other channels that were involved so that the algorithm creates links between our channels and hopefully it leads to more crossover views between us.

This where Mr.LaDelle’s analytics complaints fall on deaf ears with me. Since I can’t do anymore without Mr.LaDelle’s endless talking, I religiously watch all and anything Mr.LaDelle publishes, wrecker-whatever or not.

And I thank you very much for that! But that also perfectly proves my point! My big fans, just like Matt’s, Rory’s, Paul’s, etc, are going to watch whatever we post. But the majority of our viewers on any given video are NOT big fans, they are just casual viewers who may find the video we posted that day interesting (and I have the analytics to prove that). So that is why in a case like this, you’ve seen lower than average view numbers on all of the participants videos of the event. Yes their big fans still watched it even if they’d already seen it from ten other places, but the casual viewers (who are the vast majority) aren’t going to watch a video about something they’ve already seen. Unless…. The video is titled and thumbnailed like I did on this one to create curiosity and get the clicks from those casual and hopefully also new viewers. I really do hate the fact that RUclips works that way, but it is what it is and to be successful on the platform, you do have to play the game to some degree.
Like I said in the video, it’s not that YOU the viewer don’t matter to us and aren’t appreciated, in fact quite the opposite. It’s that mathematically in the RUclips world, that small of a percentage doesn’t make a noticeable difference in anything.
For example, our pay is calculated off of views, but in blocks of one thousand, and each block is worth about a cup of coffee (but can vary up and down), now look at the number of comments on this video of people saying they waited for the participants videos, or that they would watch whatever we put out regardless if they’ve already seen it or not, and you can see it most likely made literally zero difference in the analytics numbers, or very very little difference.
Now as I said, that’s not saying that YOU viewers and your views/comments are not important to us. They very much are and the fact that you viewers kept asking me where my videos was is the only reason I even posted it. But what it means is that mathematically to the RUclips analytics, those numbers mean almost nothing.
An edit to add some numbers to this…
I just looked at my analytics and on average, 69% of my views come from the browse feature, and 16% come from RUclips suggested videos, meaning 85% of my views come from casual viewers who did not open RUclips intending to watch my videos, but then clicked on them because they looked interesting at the time. In a case like the wrecker games where it’s something that has most likely been suggested to them many times over, if they were interested in it, they would have already watched it.
That’s why the wrecker games videos that the participants posted are getting far lower than average views for them, and I really just want to post normal videos instead of anything involving the wrecker games, and was trying to avoid posting this one. But since I decided to post it, I did it in a way that I’m not a fan of, but new that it would increase its views to hoped make it worth it.

I have to say, I was one of that very small % of people who waited for all you guys to release your videos. I refused to watch any shorts or other people who posted videos because this event was FOR the people but you guys all did the hard work and deserve the credit for it (in my opinion).
Plus the other thing is watching other people's random videos you only see what the vehicle is doing from a distance. Watching you guys we get the commentary, jokes, behind the scenes things like fixing the transfer case at the ARB&B in the middle of the night. No one else is able to give us that.

For the record, yes, I was interested in the games, but I'm also interested in the people who participated. So yeah, I've now seen the highlights of the event from several different perspectives. BUT I'm still interested in the people involved (including you!) and your interactions for those days. For a lot of us this wasn't just about the trucks and the competition, but also seeing people we've come to "know" and love interacting with the rest of our YT "family" and having a blast doing so. Watching people have fun is fun! So while I absolutely understand the logic of not posting the 12th rehash of similar content, at least some of your regular viewers *are* interested in seeing you and Ben joking around or you screwing with Paul while he's welding or any variety of the bribes you took, etc. I would totally understand if you don't post any other footage because the work involved doesn't outweigh the benefits, but I would still watch even though I've seen the event from a dozen different angles already!

Totally get what you're saying Casey. I follow about half of the main channels involved. I thought I'd probably only watch one or two of the channels coverage as they were likely to all be the same. But what I found is that each channel gave a different perspective and style of reporting, so I actually ended up watching more (and some different) main channels than I would normally. Glad you enjoyed the event. 👍

I watched your video, I read Rory’s comment and all I want to say is it was quality entertainment at its best! I did not watch the videos that the spectators posted but waited for you and the rest of the participants posted and loved them all. I understand that you earn a living doing this and the analytics are what determine how much you are paid. I for one continued to watch your videos while the event was going on and until you posted the “Games”
In a nutshell, it was well thought out, organized and VERY ENTERTAINING!
My thanks to all of you!

Your honesty and integrity is much appreciated, Casey. I also am one of those who refused to watch any videos that were posted prior to the "official date", and only watched the channels such as MORR, Robby Layton and yourself. I did take a mental note of the channels that posted ahead of time, and, frankly, they are now in my "never watch" list, regardless of heir content. If one agrees to certain conditions, it is incumbent to hold to that agreement. Honesty counts!!

Paul is a competitor , who originally met Matt Wetzel when they were doing demolition derbies . He built a truck that had no problems, even though it was brand new .
Rory Irish is from Moab , grew up there, and has been off roading for many years . Moab Motorsports grew from his hobby . Shawn and Mike seem to be his friends .

The rest of the people, I may watch once in a while, but it doesn't click for me the same way as you guys. I think it's because your videos are a little more to the point and you do a good job describing what you are doing and don't try to oversell it. You pride yourselves on your honesty and enjoy sharing what you're doing instead of just trying to sell a sponsors product - and when you are doing a sponsored product, you're like "Hey, this is a sponsored product. Watch if you like, I won't be butt-hurt if you don't." I appreciate that and usually watch (or leave it running in a background muted tab) so that you can keep your view numbers and watch time up to help you out because I appreciate you. Look forward to meeting some of you when we get to the western half of the country with our skoolie (and I hope we don't need a pull out or a tow)!

I didn’t understand why the video release date was over a week past the event, or why spectators who were charged entry were asked to wait also. But that’s just me. Because people who attended posted congrats on the winners channels prior to the results videos, keeping it a secret wasn’t possible even without other videos.
