For some context here.. When I met the guy to buy the trailer, he had a title, manufactures certificate of origin, and bill of sale, all matching the VIN number on the trailer that did NOT come up as stolen when I checked it. There’s no way I can get my money back from the guy who sold it to me, BECAUSE HE WAS THE THIEF. I’ve been through the ringer with the sheriffs office handling the case for the original and legitimate owner, and a DMV investigator, and I gave them all the documentation and paperwork I had, including the cash withdrawal from my bank for the amount of the trailer just an hour before the purchase, which cleared me of any wrong doing. But all of the paperwork the thief had, the phone number he used, and even the address we met at were all fake.
The DMV investigator said he’s seen quite a bit of this lately where the thief’s are scouting out a vehicle ahead of time, making up all the paperwork with the legitimate VIN, then listing it for sale before they ever even steal it. Then once they have someone (like me) setup a time to come look at the vehicle, they go take it and meet up with the prospective buyer at the address of a random person who they know isn’t home during the day. That way the vehicle still has a clean vin when “sold”, and you’ll never be able to track them back down once everyone realizes it’s stolen.
So since we have no idea what the true identity of that person is, or how to ever find them again, I’m not getting that money back.

I have also been scammed this way. The one thing I had on my side is that I parked behind the trailer to check it out and left my truck running with the dash cam on. While I still lost money. His face and vehicle were on camera and he was arrested. Of course it was a week later and the money was spent. I could sue him but he had no pot to piss in and already owed restitution to 3 other individuals previously. Now he's serving 15 years for drugs and theft charges. When I saw the title of the video and knowing you're in Oregon, my first thought was Portland. Portland has got to be the capital of stolen trailers in the US. I had a one year old Wells Cargo enclosed trailer stolen there from in front of my apartment about 15 years ago. I think at that time there had been over 600 trailers stolen that year. Luckily I had put insurance on it about 6 months before. It was recovered about 15 blocks away and had been trashed in order to make it less identifiable. One of the idiots that stole it was wearing a tracking collar on his ankle and the cops were able to place him at the scene at the exact time it was stolen. The charge was "unauthorized use of a vehicle". His defense attorney kept getting it postponed till I said "f**k it" and forgot about it. If I was betting, I would bet he was your thief or definitely knows the thief.

Moved across country, couldn't tow all with my little Ford Escort (so we packed what we could inside the car), friend said I'll store the rest in my spare room, you get a job, send money, I'll ship it to you. Mean time, drugs came into her life. She sold all our stuff that she could for drugs, dumped the rest. Police response, drive back, go to court, good luck, blah blah blah blah blah. Yup life sucks sometimes, but stuff can be replaced (boy that's a hard pill to swallow). May you continue to be blessed in all else in your life. I sell a vehicle to someone, I take a picture of their license and the bill of sale in case something unhappy happens to it before title is transferred. All the auctions do that with vehicles now. Buying privately, do the same.
Had a friend sell a vehicle to a fellow. Got a call from the FBI asking if he wanted to pick up his vehicle. He declined, stating he had sold the vehicle and it was no longer his. He had his bill of sale copy if they wished to see it. The vehicle had been used in a bank robbery and his honesty kept him out of trouble.

a lot of places you take the plates off and keep them and then go online to a state database to alert them you have sold it......more so for crash liability vs a bank robbery......but with things these days a bank robbery, another car jacking, ATM robbery, crashing into a store, purse snatching and on and on is all on the list of why you let the state know that vehicle is not yours and has been sold.....in some states you have the option to do it in others it is legally required to do it and in some they are still not set up for that

Shit Casey that just sucks big time. I am very sorry that this has happened to you. I was just reading an article that the low life thieves are also doing that with newer vehicles , stealing them and then quickly selling them at fire sale prices for cash. Telling people what every bull crap story about getting the title to them and of course doing all of this before the VIN is into a stolen vehicle date base. And you really tried to protect yourself. I hope that somehow they catch the thugs and lock them up.

I did the same thing. But being that my Load Trail dump trailer was a power up/power down I had to install 2 diodes (works as a check value) so power goes one way and not back the other way. Then I connected the corded control box back to it by using some piggyback clips. I also added an off/on switch to the Harbor Freight box because it does draw some power from the battery when parked. Works AWESOME!
