    Other than Gris and Planet of Lana (I already know about those two), what other games do you think would fit within my definition for LIMBO-like? This isn't shallow engagement bait, I just really like these games and I want to play more of them.

      Arkham asylum now this will sound stupid but that section just always creeped me out in similar ways

      Machinarium! 2D puzzle platformer that definitely isn't horror, but it's still very atmospheric. I think it fulfills all your requirements, but it's been a while since I played it (and I didn't get that far lol).

      Far: lone sails and changing tides are maybe my favourites ass they add some gameplay complexity without compromising the atmosphere or pacing that these games are known for.
      The first one is a must play for any fans of the genre and the second, while not as memorable, is also worth checking out for its additions to the gameplay.

      It doesn't fit the definition as you laid it out, but I think Thomas Was Alone is almost a mirror inversion of Limbo.
      Instead of detailed graphics, everything is just coloured shapes, and instead of not saying a word, Thomas Was Alone has a narrator that comments on everything. But despite this, it still manages to tell a story in much the same way, with lots of ambiguity and room for interpritation.

    as someone with an amateur background in game dev, watching talks by these devs among others, and using the same engine, its incredible how a game like inside exists. I didnt appreciate it to the full extent when it released, but after learning game dev for some years and playing limbo it has hit me how much playdead has this stuff nailed down

    I have no idea why the algorithm didnt like this (maybe the uhh sensible imagery in Limbos background?). Don't let it put you down, its a great video that will do numbers with time.

      Man, who knows? It's all too easy to be frustrated by the whims of an unfeeling algorithm. At this point, my only real goal is to continue building out a catalogue of videos I'm proud of, and just cross my fingers that it works out in time.

      @@camwing that's the only thing I can come up with that would make the system auto-flag it. Which is a shame because it really is needed to drive home the point of imagery telling the grim story of Limbo. It sucks but I'm sure this will do numbers in time with your next release and folks creeping into the backlog

      @@undercoverduck The funny thing is, that wasn't intentional at all, but it looked super cool so we left it in. The light we chroma-keyed our text mapping to started flickering, which means the text did the same. We're definitely gonna try to do it on purpose in future videos though

    Really loved this video, an insane amount of polish clearly went into the editing and script writing. Kinda scratches the same itch that a Jacob Geller video does.

    I love the trope of a man and his dog traversing through some strange world. Other than Somerville and Blair Witch, you don't see it in many games very often.

      Every time I got separated from the dog made me stressed about a fictional animal. I dunno how they did that. I wanna see this trope used more often, because it's a good one.

      @@camwing I played Blair Witch in VR and being able to physically pet Bullet and literally hold your arms up in front of you to carry him when he's wounded only made me more attached to him.

      It's honestly a valid premise because I myself go hiking with my dogs and have gotten caught up in some off trail explorations. Recently got the most powerful flashlight I've ever owned and I fell in love with exploring at night with my dogs. Living in Oregon there is plenty of vast dense wilderness out here

    Great reminder to snag up Little Nightmares for Halloween! 👻 🎃 Inside and Limbo are some of my favourite games and I've had my eyes on Little Nightmare for some time. I'm curious to find out another studio's take on the subgenre/formula.

    Inside was the pinnacle, absolutely stellar. I felt like Little Nightmares 1 wasn't nearly as good, too prescriptive and limiting in what you had to and could do.
    I didn't get very far into 2 before I was bored, maybe I'll finish it someday.

    Genuinely no clue why this has so few views. This was such an interesting fuckin video, especially talking about Somerville alongside the other big Limbolike series! The personality you injected into the script was so great, and the way you edited text to actually feel like a part of the games they're about? Absolutely masterful. Keep struttin your funky stuff!!

    I've played inside, planet of lana, and somerville. abzu and journey too if u consider them 3D LIMBO.
    inside was pretty good, and this may be recency bias but i actually liked somerville more. I mean the art direction, sound design, story, everything really came together, really disappointing it didn't do well.
    planet of lana seemed so boring and repetitive. the game looked gorgeous on the trailers, but the art style did not change really at all through the game, while inside and (especially) somerville had some gorgeous visuals
    when a game is more or less doing tedious puzzles with tedious controls, the story, as well as all artistic elements, need to be pushing the barriers, for me to actually enjoying it. The gameplay of all these games are actually horrendous imo, but it slows you down to better appreciate the world and the environment to better tell the story.
    There's other games which completely get rid of gameplay, which removes all frustrations gained from the gameplay of these games (dontnod/telltale/supergiant etc), but none of these give the same "vibe" of controlling a character and living in the world- it's more less just a movie now...

    The first games i immidiently thought of with the description from the beginning were Little Nightmares and the Far games! (Lone Sails and Changing Tides). I think other games like Journey, Rime, Abzu, and unravel could potentially work too.
    This sort of genre also reminds me a bit of games like Fran Bow, pinstripe, or Little Misfortune, though those do have dialogue &/or spoken words

    I really enjoyed Inside. It immediately made me think of Limbo, but I had no idea they were developed by the same company. Guess that tracks.

    Even though I have played hundreds of games, it is not a coincidence that Soma and INSIDE are still in the top two places among the best games I have played.

    First of all I’d like to state this video was very well made and I agree completely with everything you said, INSIDE is my favorite game, but I love all of these games. I also wonder if happy game by Amanita deigns would fit into this category because I definitely get a similar vibe from it.

    I've always considered these games to be part of the same general subgenre that games like the original Prince of Persia, Abe's Odyssey and Another World pioneered. Platformers with an emphasis on animation, realistic player-physics and highly visually directed narratives often with merciless death States that come from playing out of step with the "choreography"

    i love to see you check out “Unto the End”

    0:56 the “screenshot and put in on a wall” thing is just like the relatively unknown game by Hinterland studios titled The Long Dark, it has an almost painted style and an amazing story and survival mode with an incredible dlc with great gameplay and graphics. It certainly would be a great video idea, with some hidden storylines in survival, difficulty, and pure beauty in the visuals, it’s an amazing game, and holds so many reasons more. and it deserves its place as my most played game, but I wouldn’t consider myself an expert especially with all the things to be completed left on my main save. You should really try it out for a video

    Oh my god this video is so well edited, like you can see how much Effort was put into this. And how every time you speak about a different game you change the font and just AUGHHH EVERYTHING IS JUST SO GOOD. Personally I love Little Nightmares the most probably because of its charm coming from the kids. But Inside has that feeling that Little Nightmares doesn’t, that feeling in its audio design and visuals that give you the feeling of a fever dream. Especially in the moment when you break the wooden planks underwater with the submarine and the camera zooms out and that feeling of being in a vacuum appears. Loved the video it deserves all the attention. Don’t lose motivation!

    I am on a mini binge of your videos and I am so happy to see a video on INSIDE! I played it completely blind about a month ago and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. I’m a huge fan of puzzle-platformers, and this is really the best of the genre. The controls are perfect, the art immerses the player fully in the world, the puzzles are just the right amount of challenge - and you can tell they learned from the flaws of LIMBO. I never saw myself as a completionist, but for INSIDE I absolutely had to get all the orbs.
    One thing I was surprised experience while playing was my protectiveness over the main character. It was a really clever choice to make the playable character a kid, I found myself thinking throughout my playthrough “I need to get him out of here,” more than “I need to solve this puzzle.” It adds to the uneasy mood surrounding the game. You did a great job highlighting all the things I love about “LIMBO-Like” games, and how Playdead separates themselves from other titles.
    You’d probably really enjoy ThatGuyGlenn’s deep dive into the creation of LIMBO!

It's obviouswy going to be cweepy fow the sake of being cweepy-these awe howwow games aftew aww-but the visuaws maintain a vewy cweaw sense of intentionawity. Expwowing a diwapidated schoow fiwwed with wiving powcewain puppets wouwd be tewwifying on its own, but the fact that these students, this setting, that they aww have a thowoughwy fweshed-out weason fow why they'we hewe and what theiw motivations awe, is one of the weasons this sewies sticks with you. These awe mystewies that have a codified sowution, whethew ow not we'ww evew twuwy know what that is. The natuwe of visuaw stowytewwing wiww awmost invawiabwy come with a wayew of mystewy. Pway Dead's "Inside" is a mastew cwass in showing evewything and tewwing nothing. Unwike "Wittwe Nightmawes," "Inside" doesn't necessawiwy have answews to any of its biggest questions, and if they exist somewhewe within Pwaydead staff, theiw designews have been tewwingwy tight-wipped about it. And showtwy aftew it weweased in 2016, Pwaydead co-foundew Dino Patti cut ties with the company, founding the studio Jumpship in 2017. The weasoning behind his depawtuwe goes faw beyond the scope of this video, but theiw fiwst titwe, "Somewviwwe," weweased to middwing cwiticaw weception, which is unfowtunate because aside fwom some unintuitive design choices and the occasionaw wack of powish, "Somewviwwe" manages to innovate within the genwe in some impwessive ways. And instead of opewating undew a designed phiwosophy of intentionawwy weaving things open to intewpwetation, it manages to dewivew a neawwy compwete nawwative thwough excwusivewy visuaw stowytewwing. In an intewview with Spowts Iwwustwated (yes, that Spowts Iwwustwated), Dino pwotested the compawisons of "Somewviwwe" with Pwaydead's titwes: "It's annoying that you cannot avoid that tie, and obviouswy, when I set up a new company, I twied to set up the same vawues and stwuctuwes. Doesn't have the same hiwing pwincipwes, so if you feew it's simiwaw, maybe that's why. But it's a totawwy new team, nobody wooked at 'Inside' ow 'Limbo'." Aside fwom the fouw weasons I wouwd expwicitwy compawe this game to "Limbo," "Somewviwwe" has a vewy distinctive visuaw identity. It awmost pways wike a movie, whewe thewe's an intwoductowy sequence with opening cwedits, an act one pwowogue that estabwishes youw chawactew's wewationship with his famiwy, and a weiwd baby, which I just-I just think is kind of funny, and it's... it's pwobabwy not on puwpose. The stowy stawts off with a twaceabwe set of beats: awiens have invaded, the fathew of this famiwy is hit by a piece of stwange technowogy, and pwesuming the wowst, the mothew and chiwd evacuate, weaving the pwayew chawactew behind. He discovews a stwange powew upon waking up, and we now have an inciting incident that hewps to dewivew the nawwative aww without a singwe piece of wwitten ow spoken infowmation. uwu.
