  • UPDATE (April 7, 2020): Hey guys! So I updated my thumbnail to show a better comparison for the wig - I should have done this sooner, but hopefully now everyone can see the difference in the original wig versus the dyed wig. These pictures were both taken in front of a window at about the same time of day. Also, I've decided to do another one of these wig-dyeing videos as a live-stream so you can see first-hand how I dye my synthetic wigs using RIT dye. Also so you can see that there are no tricks or any slight-of-hand when revealing the finished look :) Look for it coming up May 2020 - I'll announce it here on the channel!
    ______________________________________________________________________________________
Hey there! When I was looking for videos on how to dye my synthetic wig for my Raven cosplay, I either only found videos showing how to dye a white wig, or videos using sharpie markers or acrylic paint. I did some research and realized that because synthetic hair is made up of mostly nylon, normal RIT dye would not dye it because the bottle says 'no nylon.' Further reading led me to the RIT synthetic dye, which worked like a charm! So I didn't have to order a new wig or toss this in my 'probably won't use' bin. I hope it helps someone out there!
    Materials used:
RIT Synthetic dye in Royal Purple, Michaels
RIT Synthetic dye in Sapphire Blue, Hobby Lobby
    (both $4.99)
Almost boiling water - 180 degrees
An old white wooden spoon used specifically for non-cooking purposes
    A large pot
    A synthetic wig
    An old hair color towel
A wig head (not necessary, though very convenient)
*RIT dyes are vegan and cruelty-free, or I wouldn't use them.*

For anyone who wants to do this on a curly wig I suggest bringing the water to a simmer! Most of the curls will survive (but they will relax) and I find that the dye distributes more evenly with the lower temp.

I finally got around to trying curly synthetic hair with RIT dye. I used cold, warm, and boiled water at the recommended RIT dye temperature and was completely shocked at the results! The video will be live today at 5:30PM Eastern Time. 😊

    • @LilFrg
      @LilFrg 5 лет назад

I wouldn't keep it at such a high temp for so long personally. I would let it go to a simmer after like 5 minutes or so. I dye most my wig at 180F as I find the color is distributed more evenly and its less aggressive on the wigs style.
edit: If its a lighter color you shouldn't need to soak it for as long either! I use white wigs and it takes ~5-10 min to get a rich color. Of course always do a test strand to see how your wig will process.

    • @purplemooncosplay2590

Hello! I've put a link to the color formula's page on the RIT website, here: www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/
You can choose the exact brown shade you want, and RIT will tell you the color formula to use. It's the coolest!
Also, here's a link to a highlight cap at Sally's. I used this years ago when I wanted to add highlights to my hair. You put it on the wig head, use a crochet needle to pull hair through the holes where you want it, and then you can dye only the pieces of hair outside the cap. It will give you the highlights without too much drama. www.sallybeauty.com/brands/salon-care/highlighting-cap/SLNCAR101.html

If you are a bit extra, perhaps drop the entire wig in the dye bath for the last 5 minutes to get a transition shade between the roots and dye. Good luck!

I'm sure you can exchange it if you haven't opened it yet. That's my best advice - exchange it for the synthetic dye so you know it'll work. I hope you ordered it, though - stay safe out there 😷!!

Hello! Unfortunately if your wig is already black, you won't be able to lift the color UNLESS it is a human hair wig and you use bleach. I wouldn't recommend trying that with a block wig because it is soooo much work (experience is a harsh teacher lol). You may need to hop onto Amazon if you are able and find a wig that is as close to the color you need, or find a white or blond synthetic wig to dye with synthetic RIT dye. I hope that helps!!! Let me know and I'll try to help :)

Either way I was very happy with the results that I saw in person. I'm sorry if the monitor or my camera doesn't allow you guys to see the difference, because there was a vast tonal difference in shade. I think if I used a green or blue dye, you would be able to see it better, but purple and pink are neighbors on the color wheel so it can be difficult to see the differences in the two shades depending on the warmth or coolness of the undertone.
