One of the things I like about the original Animal crossing is that you’re not some pillar of hope coming to reshape the community for the better, you are just some nobody that rolled into town. Nobody knows who you are so they aren’t overly friendly, like how normal people would act towards a new person in their community. But over time you learn these villagers quirks and behaviors they start to feel less strange and more like neighbors and you become apart of the town. Not a mayor, not head of community development, but a neighbor.

I think that's what I love the most about the original game. While the loss of the QoL changes over the years can definitely be felt, it's nice just being another face in the village rather than a paragon of change.

Yes! I miss this! my problem with ACNH is there's WAY too much responsibility. Everyone always decorates their island like crazy, I just leave mine as natural as it can be, cause that's how it was.

And that’s the entire core concept of Animal Crossing: starting as an outsider and feeling like you don’t fit in as the world around you is strange and not always the nicest but overtime you bond with your new surroundings and learn to call this place home.
New Horizons didn’t get that memo, it just feels like god simulator and doesn’t have much soul to it. It feels like everyone is just a collectible puppet.

@@SirRias That's just basic economics. I used to live in a ranch with guabas, tamarinds, onion, tomato and raddish galore, literally anyone could pick a basket of market discarded procude for free and take it home. The overproduction and easy access to a produce makes it virtually cheaper or less valuable.
The "An Town" is like filled to the brim with fruit that anyone can just pick. Like lucky Tom Nook even gives you a mere bell for something he could just walk and pick up.

Or forgetting to save and getting yelled at by Resetti. I was 8 years old when I got the GameCube version of Animal Crossing. The first time I saw Resetti show up (at least I think it was the first time), I literally ran to my parents crying XD. It is amazing that I continued to be an Animal Crossing fan up to today after that event lol. I continued to have a love-hate relationship with Resetti. I remember intentionally quitting without saving on Wild World to get him to pop up just for me to troll him with my answers. He would insist that I do write the message that he wants, or something like that, and I would write something entirely different on purpose. Ahhh the good ole days. It is probably for the best that they toned him down in later games, but man, I wish he had more presence in New Horizons, because you do not really encounter him, beyond hearing his voice. I understand that his services are no longer required now that the game can autosave, but man.. The dude is iconic

It wasn’t just the OG Animal crossing that didn’t have character creation, it was every single game that was formatted this way. You’d talk to Rover or Kapp’n, they’d ask you a few questions, and poof, your character. In some games, other elements would later become customizable. For example, in WW, they introduced Harriet, who used a similar question system to give you a haircut. In later games you could apply your Mii’s face to the player character, which looked incredibly cursed. You NEVER knew what kind of haircut you were getting, and kind of just had to live with it until the next day. You’d also have to cough up around 3k bells each time. Also, they had no definitive way to choose your skin color. You’d literally just have to sit out in the sun on a clear day to obtain a “tan” that would darken your skin. It was *so bad* that they never even introduced alternate skin colors until New Horizons, almost 20 years later. In the OG version, you could technically change your face to a horrifying gyroid expression if you dared leave your friends town without saving, but this isn’t permanent IIRC. The first Animal Crossing game released in the US only had shirts and umbrellas. The shirt would be a bit like the basic custom design shirt you get NH. It was one parttern pasted across every axis, and would be replicated on the non removable hat given to the player character. Every AC game came with a new accessory. wild world, they introduced hats that you could actually remove, as well as accessories like face wear. In City Folk, you could technically get new shoes and socks. You’d have to go to the city (the gimmick of the game was a new area called the City with a few new shops and places you could visit. The game is known as being the weakest in the series due to its notable lack of additions.) and ask a skunk, Kicks, to shine your shoes. This would also present a random combo each time. He also wasn’t always there, so it was a really big gamble. In New Leaf, Kicks finally got his own storefront where you could actually buy socks and shoes. They also made the player character taller, allowing for pants to be added, as well a full body costumes. In NH, there wasn’t much left expand on cosmetically, so tote bags, hand bags, an backpacks were the only “clothing” item added. So many character items have been sadly replaced or lost. Pelly and Phyllis being the first two who come to mind. Blanca, Resetti, Dr. Shrunk, Tortimer, Booker and Copper, Lyle, etc. have all been removed or delegated to very small roles comparatively. So many classics lost imo.

    • @VeryTori
      @VeryTori 7 месяцев назад +5

I actually loved City Folk and the new city area. Yes, it was basically Wild World, but I was also ok with it at the time. This one time, I played with someone online and he gave me a hacked axe that looks like an electric guitar. I am pretty sure I still have it to this day. Granted, I haven't touched City Folk in years. I am sad that they got rid of a lot of the OG characters, but the one I am the most sad about is Resetti. I had a love-hate relationship with the guy and he tormented me, and I trolled him back, but man. That dude is iconic. I am pretty sure Lyle can be seen in New Horizons right? Or maybe that was New Leaf and Happy Home Designer.

Fun fact: Animal Crossing is basically an N64 title running on the GameCube, originally released on the N64 in Japan under the title Animal Forest. The game is less than 32MB in size (a GameCube disc holds 1.46GB), which is so small that you can remove the disc after booting the game and it will continue to play using the console's internal RAM.

    1. HOW do so many people forget that Animal Crossing bells are 1 to 1 with Japanese Yenn since that's where Nintendo is. The first loan isn't $19,800, is 19,800 yenn in 2001 money which was around $160 in 2001 and around $300 in today's money. That's incredibly cheap for these houses.
    2. If you buy and sell enough to/from Nook, his store will expand & there will be more for sale. There are 3 expansions: Nook n Go, Nookway, and if you buy something in a friend's nook shop, Nookington's where Timmy and Tommy make their first and only appearance.

But as time goes on the product becomes more and more rare and desired, obviously. Sure, consoles and games that are 10 or 15 years old aren't that special. They're still relatively recent. But when those things become 30-40 years old, obviously the price will rise. In fact, the age of a game is such an important aspect of the price, that people will literally give hundreds of dollars for a bad game that nobody wants to play, just because it's old.

gyroids are based off haniwa, clay sculptures who used to be buried alongside the dead a long time ago in japan! fun fact: if you save the game while on the train, when you come back, your avatar's face will be that of a gyroid, it led to some theories back in earlier days of animal crossing.

Mostly because all types (grumpy, sister etc etc) have the same diaglogue as each other, and they're automatically now your friend, rather than having to get them to warm up to you first and gradually start to like you. At least that's what I've been able to work out. I really miss the Grumpy and cranky villagers actually being.. well.. grumpy and cranky lol

You barely scratched the surface of how brutal 100%ing the game is. If you want a full collection log, you need to play daily FOR YEARS. You want all of the K.K. Slider songs? Every Saturday, 8pm-midnight, you must request a specific track from K.K. Slider at the train station. He will give you ONE song per week. How do you even know what the songs are called? Visit villager homes until you see that they just happen to have a stereo and just happen to have ONE track in it, so you know what to request from K.K. How many songs are there? 55. There are 55 songs, 12 of which are ONLY available with an e-reader. This is *JUST* the music tracks. If you want all the fish, you have play different times of day, different times of year, and there are some fish that only appear for like a week in september, and if you don't catch it the first time for that day, it won't spawn again till the next day. Insects are the same way. Fossils are easy enough, but still take a few weeks of finding all 5 fossils EVERY DAY. For art, you need to be randomly visited once a week by Redd, who may not even have a painting that day! The 3rd house upgrade costs $398,000 bells! Assuming you pay 10,000 bells PER DAY, that's OVER A YEAR PAYING OFF 1 UPGRADE.
I didn't even mention that Tom Nook won't keep a consistent price for fish and insects. You can only sell about 10-15 fish to him before he starts paying like 80 bells each instead of 800-1200. Then the price resets the next day!

I'm so amused by your interpretation of this game. It was my first Animal Crossing, and skipping over an entire generation (from DS/Wii to Switch), plus New Horizons being the first AC game I know of where there isn't a pre-existing town to move to, meant that my very different experience of the game was the other direction.

  • @missbee6101

The original Animal Crossing on GameCube was the first game I ever played. My brothers and sister played it as well. My oldest brother was the first to pay off all debt, get a gold statue, catch all the fish and bugs, and complete the museum.
I had played it on my own when I was a little older. Had my own town, Liz (a pink alligator) lived there.
After a few years, I had everything I wanted in my house, even a full T-rex skeleton. I was BFF's with Liz and was racking up bells.
One day I boot up and the game and I'm greeted with K.K. turns out my memory card got corrupted and the only way I could play again was to delete my town. At least, at the time, I was not aware of any other way to fix this.
I cried for a good hour to lose part of my childhood, my NPC friend that I knew would never be in my town again, and losing my fossil collection/house.
As much as I love all of the Animal Crossing games in their own way, the original was a big part of me growing up. As clunky as the original is, and as much as I love New Horizons, the original has a special little place in my heart. I'd probably still play if my original file didn't get corrupted.
