What's MIND BLOWING is the pro 1DX mark 3 has a 20.1MP sensor (same as the R6 mark 1) and that camera still sells for $6,500!! That one also has no IBIS, and a slower autofocusing system. Now you can buy a better camera than that (basically what Peter McKinnon started his whole career with [1dx mk2]) for an absolute fraction of the cost with so much more!! I love that the R8 is light and easy carry, and I won't be too scared to take it out on every day occasions. Buying one to replace my R6 mark 1 as I just shoot for fun.

As a Canon user for a decade who switched to Sony 2 years ago, I have to say I've never lost faith in Canon cameras. I was priced out of their lenses. I can't justify the premium of Canons lenses or GM for that matter when the Sigma art line exists.

I mean even the gm lenses are cheaper than canons counterparts. But I completely agree with you. Canon is shooting their own foot with this strategy. They at least need to focus on mid range to budget glass. The other issue I see is they only have to compete with themselves so they won’t have to make better glass for cheaper like Sony does with sigma/tamron. Third party glass just help breed better lenses for a better price. Which I feel like canons mid range/budget options will be trash so people buy their red ring..

The R8 is more similar to the R10. It's basically the full frame version of the R10. Same FPS, same megapixels etc. But it's full frame instead of APS-C. The R7 is more like an APS-C version of the R6. Whether you should go with R7 or R8, you should ask yourself what you consider most important to you: IBIS, full mechanical shutter and extra reach (R7) or better low light performance, more shallow depth of field, higher image quality and dynamic range (R8). Also keep in mind the lack of crop lenses available for the R7 (for now, you'd have to use exclusively full frame lenses, which don't function as well on crop sensor cameras).

Canon are unlikely to do it. They already have some pro sports shooters using the Mark 1 R6 instead of the R3 or 1dx3. They want pros/enthusiasts to buy the R6,R5,R3 or (when it comes) R1. Those cameras [will] have vertical grip option or built-in, but they are not cheap.
When Canon becomes serious about competition it will perhaps be too late. Maybe then they will release some much desired equipment, for example the RF70-200 f2.8 (or even other L telephotos) with a black rather than steal-me white option. They already brought back eye control focus from the EOS 3, much improved too.
The lens line up is going to take some time though imo. It is missing the lighter (than f1.2) ~f1.4 primes and f4 zooms that most non-full timers might be interested in, and their cheaper stuff e.g. 8f f2 lacks the quality and build of the better lenses in the L or GM range. In fact, there's not a single RF lens that I want (over EF equivalent) in my pack yet because my ideal line up is 20 f2.8L, 35 f1.4L and 85 f1.4 L, and all must weight less than 800g and be less than 4 inches long (or might as well use EF). If I moved to Sony I could buy the lenses I want. The only thing that is putting me off is Sony bodies don't feel as nice in my hand, and the menu system has a font that makes it harder to read and get used to.

Something to keep in mind for the differently handed. :-) We will definitely be upgrading her to the R8 as soon as we can get it!

Canon R50/R10 + R8 + R5 or not, with good quality RF lenses, and you've a professional setup. Unlike Sony and Nikon who majorly ignores APS-C line-up, who doesn't have entry level affordable full frame unless you go a generation old which feels decade older in current camera tech, with the Z5 or A7C, R8 is a beast.
I would switch to R8 as soon as it drops to the market and invest in RF lenses. With R50/R10, I'm getting Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and 50-100 f/1.8 until they make those two lenses for RF mount.

I'm a landscape photographer who is still using an EOS-R. I didn't go to the R6 because I didn't want to lose 10mp, especially when i often have to crop.. I was intrigued when the R6MkII came out, and it's still on my radar. I love the R, and the only things that are making me even consider a new body is HDR and IBIS. When shooting HDR with the R, you have a long "Busy" message while the camera is processing the images, during which you can't do anything. I've used an R6, and the HDR processing in it is almost instantaneous. Mark one up for the R6/R6Mkii. I would like to have IBIS, which the R6/R6Mkii have, and the R8 does not. Not a deal breaker on getting the R8, but it's a thing.
So, do I plunk down $1500 for an R8, or $2500 for the R6Mkii? The deal breaker for the R8 is the battery. I spend a lot of time in the field, so I may change batteries many times during a day long shoot, and to make that possible, I have 5 batteries for the R, that will also work on the R6/R6 ii. I don't want a lower capacity battery, and I don't want to have to buy 4 or 5 new batteries. Sorry, but the R8 is out for me, and it's a shame...
